Small Updates with Big Impacts in R5C Firmware 1.0.7.1 - EOS R5C Tip 31

  • Canon recently released firmware 1.0.7.1 for the EOS R5C, and while there aren't any huge updates or major new features, almost all of the small updates add significantly usability improvements.
    We're talking about small things, like being able to reset/recenter the AF point with by pushing in on the joystick or pressing the set button. Or changing the size of the manual focus guide and Continuous AF frame thickness.
    None of those are huge changes, but for someone who switches between the R5 and R5C, or ends up in front of their camera as much as they do behind it, the changes are huge upgrades in usability.
    You can download the latest firmware from Canon USA's page at: www.usa.canon.com/support/p/e...

    Thank you very much for the good video!! Looking forward to test the AF Frame thickness. l would like to have the possibility to change color on it, as well. I guess it still can be difficult to see if the frame hit were you want. For example when you want eye focus to work hit the eyes on a person a bit fare away.

      WiFi is a problem one way or another. When it's not there, people complain; when it's not perfectly stable and super fast, people complain.
      I tested the WiFi on the R5 (both the R5 and R5C use the same chipsets), and it's not great. At best, I can get 50 Mbps from it on my network (Unify UAP7s, gig-e backhaul, my iPhone 15 pro can git 650/250 Mbps on the same network). While that's enough for remote control and a low res live view feed, it's not really enough to stream any kind of high quality video without having problems. Even streaming 8 Mbps, there's still the potential for dropped frames and that's not really acceptable on a pro level camera.

    Missing now are metadata to better stabilize the R5C espécialy for VR 180° recording.

    the joystick on the c70 was also a button, but it could a pain to operate if you weren't pressing directly down. Any angle in the press would not give the desired effect - something easy enough to do in run and gun or gimbal work.

      For some reason it totally slipped my mind that the C70, and actually I think all of the cinema cameras have a joystick on the back of the grip. For some reason, I had it in my head that only had a joystick on the screen. My bad.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  22 дні тому +2

      Unfortunately, we're both going to just have to wait for that. I don't get stuff from Canon, prerelease or otherwise. Plus I don't have the cash to just throw randomly at whatever camera gear suits my fancy (otherwise I'd have an R3, a C400 on order, and a Z9 and an A9-3 and some lenses for them). So I have to weigh my upgrades based on what I think makes most sense for me, and what I have the budget for.
      My bet right now is that I'll probably get an R5-2, but like everyone else, I'll be putting in an order and waiting for it to ship when it ships. If I had to guess, that means I won't have any hands on stuff until close to the end of the year.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  21 день тому

      First, at least on Canon USA's site, it's listed under Mac OS Ventura. If it auto detected Sonoma, just change the OS to Ventura and it should show up.
      That said, I don't know why Canon bothers to make a distinction for the firmwares. The only difference between the mac and windows versions is that the mac version is distributed as a dmg image and the windows version is a ZIP file (which Macs have been able to read and decompress for ages now). Everything that's in that file , so the firmware and some PDF instructions, are platform independent so it doesn't matter what OS or version you download.

    Hi Jason, after updating to the latest firmware on the Canon R5C, did it reset any of your user inputs or custom buttons? (I just wanted to ask because the last update reset all my inputs and custom buttons)

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  21 день тому

      Unfortunately, yes, it does. All of the cinema EOS updates reset all of your menu and custom picture file settings (though for some reason, the photo mode settings don't get reset).
      Canon, and I, always recommend backing up your menu and custom picture settings to an SD card before upgrading the R5C's (or any other Cinema EOS camera's) firmware. I had originally mentioned that in this video, but ended up cutting that and the how to do it out and into a separate video for time purposes.

    • @MrShadowsports
      @MrShadowsports 20 днів тому

      @@PointsInFocusHi Jason, Canon recommends against applying a back up made from a previous FW on to v1.0.7 1. This is specifically called out in the last paragraph of the firmware upgrade procedure. This is because of the new menu options and button mapping features added to this firmware update. You also cannot downgrade to a previous version of FW once 1.0.7.1 is applied. Your videos are always good BTW. I appreciate that you've stuck by the body for the last couple of years as I have.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  19 днів тому +1

      @MrShadowsports, the relevant section of the release notes reads:
      "- After the firmware update has been performed, the camera's menu settings will be reset. *It is recommended that, prior to starting update operations, users save their menu settings as settings data to an SD card, separate from the one that will be used to carry out the update.* This saved data can be loaded into the camera and the settings can be changed after the update has been completed. For further information on this, please refer to the section in the unit's Instruction Manual titled 'Saving and Loading Camera Settings.'"
      What you can't do is load a save made with 1.0.7.1 into a camera running an older version of the firmware.

    A decent little upgrade but honestly expecting more. Typical canon to wait forever and then sprinkle us with something when it could be so much more. I’m an R5c user and doubt any type of camera is in the works to replace this any time soon so I would hope canon will keep this camera alive for some years to come. I would LOVE fringin AF lock tracking or face AF ON 4K 120P like the C70. Heck I’d even compromise and say make it with ONLY EXTERNAL power and I’d be happy at the very lease. I have AF in 8k60 with external power why can’t I just have AF 4K120. Let me be able to drag around the screen my wave forms. I think af in general could still use some improvement. Lastly what would also be insane but doable is either 4k canon RAW LIGHT internal or full sensor, 4k pro res raw with external or internal, and an open gate recording option like Fuji and Panasonic.

    Why do you only want to put out videos once a week? Is it an algorithm thing?

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  22 дні тому +3

      I'd love to put out videos more frequently. The problem is time. I do this completely solo. I write, test, shoot, edit, etc. every video that I produce. In most cases, especially when there's testing involved (which is more often than not, even if I'm just talking about what a setting does), it just takes time to get things done. For most of my videos, I'm amazed if I can turn something around from concept to final product in less than 4 or 5 days.
      This also goes to your comment about the misspelled word in the title card. Since I don't have a team, I have to do all the QC checks, and sometimes stuff slips through. I wish I was better at that, but sometimes stuff slips through. DaVinci Resolve doesn't help there either, as it has no built in spell checker, and it doesn't use the OS provided spell checkers (at least on windows). And anybody who's done their own proof reading knows that it's very hard to spot errors when you know what you were supposed to have written.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  20 днів тому

      In at least the case of C.log2, it's not there the camera doesn't have enough dynamic range to warrant it. Moreover, using it on the R5C would produce lower quality files than either of the log formats that are there.

    • @pepsiq210200
      @pepsiq210200 20 днів тому

      @PointsInFocus from my own testing, i shot RAW and then render out two 10 bit files one with C log 2 and other with c log 3 (to make it more like simulation of what we would have if we shot it in C log 2 + 10 bit codec in camera) and then i use a lut on that files. And there's at least 1 stop in the shadows compared to c log 3.

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  19 днів тому

      😔 I've tried to write this 3 times now....
      I've done that test, I even redid it today after you mentioned just to see if I was remembering wrong. Once the two images are corrected for brightness and contrast (by adjusting the clog3 one), I get basically the same results. There are differences, but not that much.
      Granted this wasn't the most scientific or well controlled test, just shooting stuff in a dark corner of a dark room so I was working down at the bottom of the camera's range. But rendering the same raw file with the two different curves, bringing that into Resolve, and applying an CST to fix the log gamma curve doesn't seem like I should need a PhD in rocket surgery to do right. Then again, I'm open to the possibility that I'm doing something wrong. 🤷
