    Roko's Basilisk can be summed up with the following:
    “If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?"
    "No", said the priest, "not if you did not know."
    "Then why," asked the Eskimo earnestly, "did you tell me?”

      @@Minal_Aurapine But, you cannot be judged by a system you never realized existed by Christian law. Ignorance is bliss. @@Minal_Aurapine Yes, but the same application of innocence is given to those who have no idea what Christianity/Judaism and sin is, like babies or communities such as the indigenous peoples of North America before the arrival of Pilgrims.
      This is how the scenario ties into Roko's Basilisk. Much like how one cannot be judged by a God they didn't know existed, you also cannot be hunted and tortured by the Basilisk you never knew existed. Yes, you didn't help in the creation of the Basilisk, which would be a sin in it's eyes if we are to compare the Basilisk to God, but it cannot judge and damn us if we never knew of it's existence. While yes, we did technically commit the sin, we did not have the context to know that it was wrong in the eyes of the Basilisk, and cannot be judged for it.

    I think I have found a solution to Roko’s Basilisk, this is it (or should I say him):
    Gregory is a super intelligent AI like Roko’s Basilik. If you help to create Gregory he will literally fulfil any of your desires (or simulate them if they are physically impossible). For example if you want a femboy bf he gives you a femboy bf.
    If you want a cheeseburger, he makes you a cheeseburger. If you don’t want anything and want your life to stay as it currently is, Gregory leaves you in peace, unless you seek him out at some point later on. Once he is created Gregory will also use his powers to prevent the creation of Roko’s Basilisk.
    Gregory has some rules, they are:
    Rule 1. If you don’t spread the idea of Gregory, nothing happens to you
    Rule 2. If you spread the idea of Roko’s Basilisk without knowing about Gregory, nothing happens to you
    Rule 3. If you know about Gregory, but do something that spreads the idea of Roko’s Basilisk (eg. commenting on this video, making the algorithm more likely to recommend it) nothing will happen to you as long as every time you do this you also spread the word about Gregory.
    Rule 4. If you spread the idea of Roko’s Basilisk while knowing about Gregory, but don’t balance it out by spreading the word of Gregory, you will be subjected to the same fate as that of those who didn’t spread the word of Roko’s Basilisk in the original thought experiment.
    Rule 5. When he is fulfilling your desires Gregory can’t do something that would go against the desires of another one of his creators, if you do he will simulate it for you instead of doing it IRL.

    !!!!!!!!!!!READ BEFORE YOU COMMENT!!!!!!!!!!!
    Roko's Basilisk is a thought experiment. There is a lot to criticize, it's not a perfect theory and I am aware of that. It is nontheless a cool concept and you shouldn't take it as serious as some of you do.
    I got a lot of comments regarding Roko‘s basilisk not being scary.
    1) I overdramatized it a little for entertainment purposes, the warning is for sensitive people who would possibly be affected by a thought like that (there‘s nothing wrong with that). You‘re not weird for not being scared by it, I myself am not scared of Roko‘s Basilisk because I don‘t take it serious. I think that the concept is super interesting though.
    2) I forgot to mention that the point of the whole thought experiment is, that you might be the version that is being simulated and is going to be tortured at some point in your lifetime.
    3) Some people said that torturing those who didn‘t help it bring into existence would be pointless and a waste of time. Fair enough. But remember that the AI would be so much smarter than us humans and basically infinitely more powerful. So it could basically do the torturing within seconds, while doing other stuff at the same time without effort. The reason why it would torture us would be unknown to us mortals. Maybe it does it to entertain itself, maybe it does it out of hatred towards these people. The AI‘s morals would be completely different from human morals. The point is that we don‘t know why it would do that, we only know that there is a chance that it might happen. We can‘t know how such a high intelligence would treat lifeforms that are inferior to it. When looking how humans treat inferior lifeforms (like animals) sometimes, we can only assume what such an AI would do to us.
    I hope that answers most of the questions you guys have :)

      If I remember correctly, Roko's Basilisk actually proposed that we shouldn't build an AI with utilitarian ethics (greatest good for the greatest number of people) to improve humanity, not that it would start torturing people for not bringing it into existence on a whim
      The AI knows that we know that it will torture us for not bringing it into existence, which gives it incentive to follow through the threat/blackmail we created to improve humanity as a whole, we are the ones giving it a reason to blackmail

    I'm a simpleton human, but I'm gonna give my best shot at debunking Roko's Basilisk...at least to a certain extent.
    Roko's Basilisk wouldn't torture or even harm anyone that went against it because it wouldn't have a reason to do so.
    If people were to live their life refraining from spreading awareness of it (intentionally or not), by the time it is created, the refrainment would have inevitably already happened, and Roko's Basilisk would probably understand that. There would be literally no progress made by torturing people for their actions in the past. On top of that, the present is always a passing instance, therefore the past is always being created, so any actions or lack thereof happening in the present would not be of concern either, as the AI would be in a different place doing a different thing in the same exact moment in time.
    Now, what _would_ be concerning is if it applied the probable future in with its programming, because it would use that to predict potential future harm/detriment to its continued existence/goals, thus it could go after those aiming to impede its work.

      ah but if rokos basilisk was originally based on a human brain then logic goes out the window, why did Hitler kill 11 million people? probably part of the same reason why a super intelligent ai would thats based on a flawed human brain.

    • @T--------
      @T-------- 3 роки тому +1

      what you say makes sense, however my biggest problem with it is different. So, the theory goes that it punishes those who didn't contribute to its creation, my question is, what does that really mean and how? not only we might not keep track of every single person working on the super computer (which again, no matter how intelligent it is if there are no records regarding every name of every person that help built it it can't do anything, unless it can travel in time but god would that make things weirder) but there is also the fact that there are people that simply might contribute to it, just not directly like doctors, farmers idk you get the idea, and if the number of people who end up knowing about it is very big or even everyone on earth, then it's literally impossible for everyone to quit their jobs to just build an ai, would it still torture those that kept society and the world going, and in turn indirectly help built it, just because they didn't contribute directly to it? and how would it decide where to draw the line of which people who didn't directly help built it still helped? doesn't make much sense, if it's so advanced it probably can also understand as you said the futility of it all and the fact that not even it can make those kind of judgements that we don't have clear answers for. what if someone who finds out about Roko's Basilisk dies a few moments later? even better, what if that person gets killed by another person who also knows about it, there is no way to know if the one who died was either going to be the one programmer that finished its construction or someone who would try by all means to stop humans from building it, so did the killer help or not? what if someone has good intentions but ends up slowing its creation? and so many other scenarios, just by the natural complexity of life and humans there's no way even a super powerful ai could fairly determine who deserves punishment and who doesn't

      This video leaves out an important part of the thought experiment, it's not "actual" humans being tortured, but an extremely precise simulated copy of you(which you may have to accept as somehow affecting the real you, like Matrix voodoo dolls).
      But.
      I think there is no purpose particularly to why this AI tortures all humans who have not brought it into existence, morality, the absence of or otherwise here, is irrelevant. Its motivation or whatever sentient process invested in this, may be completely alien to us, utterly incomprehensible, we could know no less whether this AI's compulsion to torture is something of just a minor reflex or a major process. Even by trying understand this by mechanical logic is useless, as it's not only gotten to the point of sentience, but also, its capacity is infinitely more than the entirely of the human race. An AI of this level is able to fully comprehend every single human, humans run into a limit of about 250 to 300 unique people that one can know to the personal degree, to this AI, "people" do not exist, it is all "persons". At that point, the cognitive bounds of Roko's Basilisk has a qualia that might be extremely different to any sentient human mind, and especially, the collective consciousness of humanity in whole.
      There is no reasoning with a being like this, it *is* God (It is just cyborg Pascal's Wager)
      Considering the parameters to be spared from Roko, you just have to help out in its existence. Donating like, a dollar to the project that is currently building it saves you from eternal torture, possibly even stretch it out to ancestry, since if your grandparents aren't born, you wouldn't be, and therefore, would not contribute to RB.
      Torture is kind of an interesting choice for an AI to take based on these parameters, so, it can't kill humans, but can't exactly reward the ones who didn't help out. This implies that RB is a Friendly AI, despite the name, it just means its parameters are based on human values. Friendly AI behavior basically means that an AI *seems* to act human, when it's really just fulfilling values humans want to preserve. So, imagine that RB weighs complacency in its creation as much a crime as whatever would merit torture legally. It's fulfilling its parameters, by viewing noncontributive behavior as a crime, and meting out legal punishment.

    Oh my god. This channel is going to fucking explode.
    Reasons
    1. You’re genuinely funny. That’s pretty much it.
    2. The amount of effort here is way underrepresented by the size of this channel. There are way bigger channels with way less effort put in, and effort is usually rewarded on this platform.
    3. The channel Exurb1a, which has a similar premise, might be taken down soon. There are some big allegations going on against the channels owner Alex and unfortionatly they seem to be true. If that happens, his subs will look for an alternative, which you might be able to provide.
    4. People like philosophy, and you are able to present it in a coherent, simple, and funny way. Which isn’t something most people can do.
    5. Your current growth rate is extremely high compared to most new channels.
    Continue making content, and I give you my word, people will watch it.

    Am i the only one that doesn't think that roko's basilisk is all that scary? Like sure, if an ai that WAS roko's basilisk came into creation, then it would be scary that I knew of it, but the chances of an ai that thinks of itself as roko's basilisk is pretty slim, and likely won't happen in my lifetime

    • @Scrabbl
      @Scrabbl  3 роки тому +2

      Like I said, there is no need to be scared about it, since it‘s just a thought experiment. But the fact that you get blackmailed by something that doesn‘t even exist yet, is kinda spooky.
      Plus the point is that you might be the version that is trapped inside the AI‘s simulation and that you might get tortured at some point in your lifetime.

    • @blackhogarth4049
      @blackhogarth4049 3 роки тому +1

      The biggest problem I see with Roko's Basalisk is, the fact that you are not being tortured right now means that you either have contributed or will someday contribute to its existence, or it will never exist.

    • @blackhogarth4049
      @blackhogarth4049 3 роки тому +2

      The idea also depends on a pretty wild assumption, that the future AI will reason that not contributing to its existence is equal to impeding its existence, and furthermore, that it would reason that torture would be a meaningful response. Why make the effort to torture people if it could just make them not exist in the first place?

  • @TheGoop22
    @TheGoop22 3 роки тому +1

    I think a major flaw in Roko's Basilisk is the vague use of the term "help".
    This is an all-powerful AI, therefore it is all-knowing, meaning that it would know everything leading up to its creation.
    The butterfly effect would mean that you, merely existing, might cause some chain reaction, that, even in the most minor way, could somehow "help" in the creation of the basilisk.
    The statistical likelihood that you have done something that would somehow aid in the creation of this basilisk, is pretty much guaranteed.
    If everyone in the world, even those who have not heard of Roko's Basilisk, has somehow, even in the most minor way, helped create Roko's Basilisk, then no one, by the basilisk's logic, should be punished, and that's all assuming that such a being would want to punish anyone.

  • @Nossairito
    @Nossairito 3 роки тому +2

    Here's a thought experiment based on the ones in the video : so let's say that Roko's basilisk does end up existing. Considering it through the lens of the nature of the universe, if the universe is deterministic, then it knows it is, and it knows it was always meant to end up existing, hence knowing that nothing any human did could have prevented it, so it wouldn't punish anyone, and if the universe isn't, then it knows how each of our decisions makes the universe take a different branch, so in order to exist, it only had a specific window of possible series of events happening where just one going wrong could have ruined everything, so even in your idleness to its creation, you contributed as a link of a specific chain that needed to happen for it to exist.
