      don't worry about it! I know how you feel though i've made some really minor errors on my videos before that I always look back on and get really upset at myself becuase i'm such a perfectionist i want everything to come out so smoothly. but i like the video and i think it's important to know that fans will easily forgive you for your hiccups, as long as it isn't so crazy that it disrupts the flow of the video. it's all good. :)

      Yeah, as soon as he mentioned the employment-experience debacle, I was hit with the car conundrum like a NAM flashback; 16 yr old me being all too familiar. I was hoping to see 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘨𝘨 make the list. In my mind, it seems like the egg. Buuut I tend to think too literal. I think my ADD is the cause for some of my more nonsensical, illogical logic.

    7: "You go back in time and kill your ancestor" Congrats, you created a future where you don't exist, while your time line is untouched. That's called string theory

  • @LOAblue
    @LOAblue 7 років тому +166

    With the grandfather paradox: If you traveled back in time, and killed your grandfather- I think you'd create an alternate timeline in the moment your grandfather died. So the moment your grandfather dies, you'd create a timeline where you didn't exist- so you'd just disappear.

    • @EHyde-ir9gb
      @EHyde-ir9gb 7 років тому

      LOAblue I like to take a Slaughterhouse five look at time travel. Because every event is essentially mapped out, there can be no changing it. though there are many paradoxes to consider with that too.

      a simple answer is Multiverse theory

    • @KiryuSteel
      @KiryuSteel 7 років тому +4

      This is flawed, since your orginal timeline is convoluted, you would have never existed to even kill and start a new alternate universe, and disappearing doesn't hold much merit, too animated. Ya filthy hipster.

    • @baldrodinson3380
      @baldrodinson3380 7 років тому +3

      Or: You kill your grandfather, thereby creating a new timeline. Because you were created in Timeline A, you are allowed to exist in Timeline B. You could live the rest of your natural life in Timeline B, albeit with forged identification seeing as how one of your Timeline B parents never existed, but you could never return to Timeline A. If you were to go back in time to stop Timeline A You from shooting your grandfather by shooting yourself, you'd be creating another Timeline. Timeline C You would be destroyed, as Timeline C You was never created in Timeline B. And because you killed Timeline A You, "The Original", Timeline B is never created.
      To summarize my hypothesis:
      If you kill your grandfather in Timeline A, you create and enter Timeline B.
      You can never change the events that created Timeline B, or you will be destroyed.
      You can still live a normal (Forged) life in Timeline B.

    • @LOAblue
      @LOAblue 7 років тому +1

      I think the way it would work: You'd create two different timelines, one where you exist- and one where you don't. And I think it would create a sort of looping effect. So.... you travel back in time, kill you're grandfather. You create a timeline where you don't exist, therefore disappearing. But there's still the original timeline, where you were able to kill your grandfather- so the sequence of events loops and repeat themselves. Hope I'm explaining that right.

    On Futurama, Fry killed his Grandfather but ended up sleeping with his Grandmother, thus avoiding the paradox.

    • @hilachlan
      @hilachlan 5 років тому +4

      handidrummed thats one way around it, but in its simplest form, you would exist either way given you follow the law of conservation of matter, no matter can be created or destroyed, only changed ir rearranged, so its not like you could just disappear after you kill your grandfather

    • @hilachlan
      @hilachlan 5 років тому +1

      DefKillah 10k nothing would happen, you already exist and cant just disappear so literally nothing would happen,
      three outcomes would be you either live in the times of your grandfather, or you go back to the future and live normally there aswell, or the very unlikely possibility of when you try to time travel back to the future you just dissolve, which 99.9999999% just would not happen

If I were to say, "The sky is blue," it creates a Schrodinger's Cat kind of situation. If the chicken came before the egg then that means the chicken would of had to have been born live if that were the case clearly I'd say the egg came from a creature like a chicken but not exactly a chicken and through some turn of evolution it was a chicken as we know it rather than what it came from which though might have been similar to chicken it might have even looked like a chicken it wasn't the exact animal we know today. But I'm certainly no evolutionary expert but thats been my take on the subject.

    I think you need to make a distinction between paradoxes and contradictions. Contradictions do just that: they contradict one another. They cannot exist simultaneously. Paradoxes, on the other hand, simply *APPEAR* to be contradictions but upon closer examination can be found to be congruent. They may be difficult to comprehend but they are still able to exist at the same time or not be in contradiction of one another.

    as for the Omnipotence Paradox, the only way an All-Powerful being could achieve the results is that, the Being makes a stone too heavy to lift... then changes the rules of reality (or its own power) to lift it again.

    • @GreyBlackWolf
      @GreyBlackWolf 6 років тому +4

      Caleb Griffin The first principle of logic is "Is it true?" God doesnt have to alter the laws of logic to do so since the very first principle is based off our knowledge. Just because we dont know something, doesnt make it true. So he could pull it off and some would still probably say that he did it wrong and hes not omnipotent purely because it didnt follow OUR understanding.
      Alot like explaining something to a child, they dont get it, but that doesnt mean its not true.

    • @ALEXGIBSONCMG
      @ALEXGIBSONCMG 6 років тому +9

      Wrong, the solution is that God would create a dimension of pure solid rock, such that all space in that dimension is rock, and therefore it cannot be lifted due to the fact that there is no place to lift from or to lift it to, thus preserving the omnipotence of his physical ability to lift, while also creating an unliftable rock.

    • @GreyBlackWolf

      ALEX GIBSON Dang. You just made a catch 22 answer for a catch 22 paradox. Lol. Iv never thought of it that way.

    • @Sealedaway
      @Sealedaway 6 років тому +4

      ALEX GIBSON Then God is not omnipotent. The ability to do ANYTHING includes the ability to break the rules of the universe. Otherwise there is a limit to the power, which by definition shouldn't exist. If God can't move a rock through an entire universe of solid rock, then that is something he is unable to do and thus, he is not omnipotent. Just because it's a pointless action doesn't mean it can be ignored.
      Also, true omnipotence would include the ability to create a rock so heavy that no amount of rule-bending would EVER make it possible to move. Even breaking the rules of reality would only lead to a more complicated, drawn-out version of the same problem. There is no escaping the contradiction.

Which alludes to the fact that our timeline can be altered and a new one created which still integrates seamlessly with the main narrative...I think of it like a rope which has multiple threads which make the rope. On the timeline paradox, I have a theory that the timelines are separated, and what happens in one timeline does not affect what happens in the other timeline. So if you went back in time to kill your grandfather, you would still exist because your grandfather from your original timeline still exists, however you would indeed seize to exist only in the timeline that you killed your grandfather

    A simpler, more modern variation on #5: An old farmer has used the same hatchet on a nearly daily basis for 50 years. Perplexed by this, a neighbor stops by to converse with him. After awhile, he inquires about the very old hatchet. Asking the farmer why he doesn't buy a new one. Reasoning that after 50 years, the old hatchet must be ridiculously worn down and beyond impractical for the uses a hatchet is normally put through.
    The old farmer replies that it has been a very reliable hatchet and he sees no need to buy a brand new. Confused, the neighbor waits a few seconds while trying to come up with a reply. As he does so, the old farmer then adds. "Yup, very reliable. Still going strong after all these decades. I've only had to replace the head twice and the handle three times."
    Yeah, it's not the same hatchet. Just as the restored boat after all the old wood is gone, is no longer the same boat.

    About the ship:
    After replacing one part of it it stays the original. Even after you have replaced every part with a new one it still stays the original because the original concept, idea, and meaning of the ship are still tied to it. If you made the exact same ship with the old pieces, it would be a replica, just made by the original material. It would be a replica, because it would have been made with the intent to copy the original ship. If the original, at that time, just so happens to consist of none of the original material it was made in the first place is irrelevant. If the replica just so happens to be constructed by using the said original material is also irrelevant.

      Here is another frame, a person goes and buys two puzzles that are identical in every way save for the color, one puzzle is red, while the other is blue. The moment when one piece is taking from the red puzzle and replaced with a blue price, the first puzzle is no longer original, it is now the red puzzle with one blue price, so on and so forth till the entirety of the puzzle is back to two puzzles that are both all red and all blue. From a logical stand point one can tell when something is original or not. The idea that the ship exists in a spiritual form pertaining to it's own combination of parts I would argue is a human personification. A great example of a similar thought excersise is in Anatta, the chariot question that predates Theseus ship. Which asks the same question but with a chariot, but then applys that concept to humans. Do humans have a soul in the same since that the ship has a soul?(we are living vs the object) but once we die we are now a combination of parts. Or is living just a more complex combination of parts than a ship, that is constantly changing out parts to continue afloat? It's a fun topic to dive into and I could write a lot more on it.

    I'm a total sucker for paradox videos. Most are pretty simple if you give them a little though. Let's see if this one is any better...
    Catch22: As it's written in this video, there isn't a contradiction. The idea that trying to get out of combat is a sane thing to do doesn't mean that the person performing that action is not insane. Eating oatmeal for breakfast is healthy, but just eating oatmeal for breakfast doesn't mean that you're healthy. That oatmeal breakfast followed by two meals of two pounds of cracklins (pork skin fried in lard) doesn't make one healthy.
    Diamonds or water: I don't see any kind of paradox here at all. There's not even an oddity. Different things have different value because of your circumstances, as pointed out in the video. WTF?
    God's stone: If a god could make a stone he couldn't lift, then he wouldn't be omnipotent. If he couldn't make it, he wouldn't be omnipotent. No matter what happens, this omnipotent being would make itself non-omnipotent. A being that is both omnipotent and non-omnipotent is a contradiction. That's what this is really about. Does omnipotence include the ability to instantiate contradictions? If omnipotence really means the ability to do anything, then obviously, instantiating a contradiction is something that this omnipotent being can do. Basically, yes, god can make a stone so heavy he can't lift it, and then he can lift it. There are some other unfortunate ramifications of allowing omnipotence to include the ability to violate the law of non-contradiction, but that's for a different video.
    My father's father: If A-theory of time is correct (which it almost certainly is not), and causal loops are possible, then there is a causal loop that you're involved with. It's not a problem because you just keep repeating the loop. If A-theory is correct, and causal loops aren't possible, then there is no problem because such causal loops aren't possible by definition. If B-theory is correct (which it almost certainly is), then you were always there during your ancestor's life and because you were born, you failed to kill your ancestor. You can travel back in time, but can't change anything because your actions in that time lead to you existing. Basically, the you that traveled back in time, is part of the causal chain that lead to the younger you being born. Events that you consider future did impact what you consider the past.
    The Impossible Stairs: It's just a quirk of perspective. Such objects can't be made into physical objects without also using a perspective
    Ship of Theseus: An oldie, but a goodie. When you replace a component of an item, the component removed is no longer part of the item, but the new one is. Continuity is important when determining identity. The old components removed from the trash and used to build a ship produce a new ship from old used components, just like using recycled materials to build a house. It's a new house, even if it looks just like a different house and is made from old discarded parts of the other house.
    Liar, Liar: The kidnapping: The kidnappers won't return anybody. They are kidnappers holding someone for ransom. They have no morals and are evil. They won't hold to their word.
    Song of Storms: LOL Casual loop. Anyway, it's a standard causal loop. If you allow for their existence, then the song exists in that loop without the need for an origination point. If you don't allow for the existence of causal loops, then why are you suggesting something that can't exist?
    Schrodinger's Cat: Superposition is a phenomenon of quantum physics. It only makes sense in the quantum world. It doesn't apply to the macro world that the cat lives in. Also, the cat is always one or the other because the cat is an observer. There doesn't have to be someone else to observe the cat. The cat does it all by itself.
    Where Is Everybody???: The Fermi Paradox isn't a paradox. We don't know the odds of life capable and interested in communicating with other life. It may be the case that we are alone in the galaxy (and possibly universe) or it may be the case that there are lots of other life forms in the galaxy. What is most likely is that they won't be using light to communicate because of how incredibly slow such communication would be. Whatever form of communication they would be using wouldn't be detectable by us, so if they are trying to contact us, we're deaf to their calls.
    Did you actually read this far? If so, leave a reply! Also leave a reply to just talk about any of my responses that you may or may not disagree with.

    • @miff2011
      @miff2011 5 років тому +4

      Agreed, apart from the paradox of the stone and the grandfather paradox these examples don't contain the contradictions necessary to qualify as paradoxes.
      Since only 2 out of 10 qualify the biggest contradiction here is between the title of the video and the content.

    Time travel one is easy, since we exist in the many world's theory of the multi-verse. Meaning simply, that you don't travel to the past, you actually travel to a different reality where the flow of events hasn't reached the same point yet. So you aren't killing 'your' paternal grandfather, you are murdering a version of him that has never sired his son. Boom! Mind blown.

    • @damien8480

      Multiverse theory is nonsense, allow me to give you the equivalent of the grandfather paradox on this one;
      In one universe, they have the technology, will, desire and everything else they need to come to this very universe and end us all. Not only that, but they are the most powerful of all universes, and would have come back 5 minutes ago.
      We are still here, so that nonsense is simply that, just a way for scientists to get paid researching things of little to no value.

    Time Travel paradox depends on which time travel theory you apply. There's the fixed one timeline theory which basically is a loop of past and present, which in that case killing your grandfather is a paradox. Then there's the multiple timeline theory. If you kill your grandfather you would still exist but killing your grandfather creates an alternate timeline in which you were never born that diverges from the original timeline at the moment you kill your grandfather. So when you go back to your present, you would go the the altered timeline present in which you were never born and no one will who you are. To restore your present timeline you would have to travel to the past again and prevent your other time traveling self from killing your grandfather, thus restoring the original timeline.

      going back to stop the killing after it already happened would simply create another timeline... once one is create you cannot bring them back together. the murder has already happened in one timeline and not in another, now you would simply create a third timeline with a foiled murder attempt no doubt leading to major differences from there on out had the whole clusterfuck never gotten started in the first place, ya feel me?

      @@imnotpishedhic not necessarily, and none of this involves 'creating a universe just for you' its just an extension of the multiple timeline theory and what may happen if you mess with it. there are an infinite amount of timelines pursuing infinite possibilities, and so trying to alter a timeline (in this theory) would not be possible, it would simply create a new timeline exploring a new possibility. So this does not make ones self the only variable, but in this hypothetical scenario one person with knowledge of the future of one timeline could be a sole variable to that specific timeline. Again, this isnt trying to create your own world, especially since there would be no way of predicting what changes would truly come about to the timelines a result of your actions.

      I feel like the line wouldn't split... U would just poof but if u poof ur future never happened so u never didn't so you would poof back right before u pulled the trigger

    Trying to understand the multiuniverse theory might as well be a paradox because the more I try to look into it the more questions seem to pop up making my head hurt
