  • Does your doctor demonize fat in your diet? Will eating fat kill you? Can you eat fat to lose fat? Does eating fat suppress appetite? Can fat reduce your perpetual hunger? Oh yes it can, but why does it work? How does it work? Is it healthy? Is it safe? Are the results long-term? Be smarter than your doctor about the essential positive role of dietary fat. These are great questions and you deserve an answer so that you can have a more factual discussion the next time your doctor recommends a low fat or plant-based diet. I answer some of these questions in this video, and the rest of the questions on my other videos on this channel. You deserve good health, happiness and great energy. Use the strategies described here to move in the right direction.
    Making the changes needed is not too difficult for a while, sustaining the changes until they become your Way of Life is far more challenging. In this episode we explore the right way to prepare and eat fat as an essential part of your diet as well as using it to suppress appetite so that you eat less and less often because you are SATIATED. We also provide some of the easy to understand science your doctor may be ignoring. Help them to know the scientific truth about how your body works.

    I'd like to mention, I mix a stick of butter with a tsp of garlic powder, tsp salt, tablespoon of dried parsley and a tsp of pepper. Then I add 2 or 3 Tblsp of olive oil and mash it together and put it in the fridge. It goes on just about everything, especially veg, but also on meat. Gorgeous.

    My 3yr old son's teachers have been complaining he doesn't want to eat at lunch time. I figured the satiety was the reason, but would worry he is not eating. Sometimes he only eats 2 meals a day. Now I fully understand why in hindsight the days when his meals are really super high fats, he just would go with nothing for sometimes up to 6 hours! And imagine he has a congenital heart disease. Praise God for this wisdom. His brain is so sharp for his age! Feed fats first!

      At the age of 9, I noticed that if I ate standard cornflakes for breakfast, I'd be tired in morning classes, and starving when the bell rang for lunch. But when I could talk Mom into making me a fried egg, I was alert and concentrated in morning class, and didn't feel hungry at lunch. 60 year later, I've discovered the reason why 😉.

      What I have found in my practice is that most people struggling with an addiction / behavioral issue are actually struggling with other things and those things MUST be fixed first. Divorce, bad marriage, bad relationships, bad job, stress, kids, family, even where they live. Sometimes just moving to a warm and sunny climate and then get a new job in a different field was all they needed to rejuvenate life. Other found divorce was exactly what they needed. Obviously it is case by case but never seen anyone actually have an issue with food, food was always the secondary issue to a bigger problem in life. Just food for thought

    • @MarmaladeINFP
      @MarmaladeINFP 3 роки тому +8

      I also struggled with addictions my whole life. Severe depression also goes back into my childhood. What I found in my experience is that diet was the only thing that was able to change this. I moved to different places and worked different jobs, even going back to college and then massage school. I also tried exercise, meditation, yoga, chi kung, body treatments, shamanism, psychotherapy, psychiatric mediations, etc. Heck, I even tried a stint in a psychiatric ward.
      Yet nothing, absolutely nothing, helped. That is until I tried diets that were low-carb, high-fat, nutrient-dense, and nose-to-tail. Diet was the main issue, not secondary in the slightest (except in the sense that my diet is part of a larger dysfunctional society, economic system, food system, and dietary institutions). I suspect that I wasn't only addicted to food but also prediabetic and malnourished, but none of the doctors and other healthcare workers ever thought to test me for any of this.

    • @MarmaladeINFP
      @MarmaladeINFP 3 роки тому

      @@DrAJ_LatinAmerica - For some reason, my comment is not posting. Maybe it's too long or something. I'll break it down into 2 parts to see if that helps. Part 1:
      I don't know about a mentor exactly. But I have close relationships with family and friends. My three closest friends I've known for more than two decades with one going back to childhood and another being a former girlfriend. I see and/or talk to these people on a regular basis.
      Specifically when I was really trying to turn my depression around, I got into a lot of social activities. I joined an active listening group, an integral group, a UU church, a martial arts club, etc. I also was dating at the time and had two decent romantic relationships.
      My depression probably went back to elementary school, about when my carb addiction began. But I really became troubled in 7th grade. And then became suicidal shortly after high school. The thing is I was never a loner and always had close friends and loving family. My parents were kind and helpful, and I got along with my two brothers.
      That is what bothered me so much when I was younger. Outwardly, my life seemed good with plenty of resources, support, and even privilege; as an upper middle class white male. There was no overt trauma in my younger life. But something was always different with me since childhood and it was hard to explain to others. Besides a learning disability, I didn't have any apparent reason to be depressed.
      That was the most frustrating part. I do sometimes wonder if there might've been heavy metal exposure or other toxicity in my early childhood that altered neurocognitive development and such. Still, I can't help noting that I ate a lot of sugar as a kid. Also, the low-fat craze kicked in when I was a young adult and my mother began buying low-fat food. What fat I was getting probably was mostly seed oils.

    • @MarmaladeINFP
      @MarmaladeINFP 3 роки тому +2

      Part 2:
      My parents didn't understand what was going on with me. They couldn't fully empathize since neither of them were troubled as kids. Even so, they were always super helpful. For example, both were in teaching professions and constantly were assisting me with my school work. They tried to balance being supportive and being tough. As conservatives, they always made sure there were rules and structure, but they weren't overly punitive either.
      What amuses me is that, when younger, my parents went through a liberal phase. They raised my brothers and I in these hyper-liberal churches (Science of Mind and Unity Church). I was fully enculturated in the self-help and positive-thinking worldview. I was always looking for answers to my problems or simply trying to figure out what exactly was my problem. I got so tired of it that for an entire year I stopped reading altogether, in the hope of it helping to get me out of my head and to stop the brooding.
      Of the endless things I tried, some lessened the depression slightly. Running, for example, was one of the things that reliably was able to put me in a more grounded state. But nothing made the depression go away. It felt like a constant struggle to hold it at bay. Then, after decades of this, I gave up on trying to change my depression and so I accepted it as my fate.
      For reasons of losing weight and general health, I decided to try low-carb diets, from paleo to keto to carnivore. My depression finally disappearing was an entirely unexpected side effect. It took me a few months to realize it really had gone away permanently. That was the only change that happened. Just diet. Looking back on the prior decades, it became clear how much I had previously used carbs (and caffeine) as self-medication.

      @@dubravkazirojevic47 There are different kinds of fasts. Water fasting, dry fasting, liquids only, etc. You would have to see how these different things affect your own body to know if they stop your fast. Very small amounts of fat based food doesn’t usually stop ketosis, which is the point of being on a fast. Also, these fats are satiating, so they help you go longer without a meal

    Here's a ChatGPT summary:
    - The goal for carbohydrate intake in a ketogenic lifestyle is zero, similar to abstinence in addiction management.
    - Incidental carbohydrates should not exceed 30 grams per day, but this is not an allowance for intentional carbohydrate consumption.
    - Vegetables are considered "free" and their carbohydrates are not counted in this model.
    - The primary fuel sources should be fat and protein, with 60-70% of the diet consisting of natural fats, preferably from animal sources.
    - Eating fat protects protein from being converted into sugar, which can trigger the insulin cycle.
    - Consuming fat helps prevent an insulin response, keeping insulin levels low even during meals.
    - Fat consumption induces ketosis, which promotes satiety and fat utilization as a fuel source.
    - Eating fat triggers hormones that signal fullness, helping to prevent overeating and supporting weight loss.
    - Fat fortifying food allows for smaller meal portions and supports intermittent fasting by prolonging satiety.
    - Recommended fat sources include animal products, butter, lard, tallow, high-fat mayo, olive oil, coconut oil, and avocado oil.
    - Solid fat fortifiers include cheese, bacon, eggs, avocado, and pork rinds.
    - Avoid adding fat to drinks, such as bulletproof coffee or MCT oils, and focus on natural fat sources.
    - Main message: Fat fortifying food in a ketogenic lifestyle promotes satiety, supports weight loss, and sustains a low-carbohydrate diet by leveraging natural fats and minimizing insulin response.

    I eat red meat, chicken, liver, eggs, fish, pecans, grass fed butter, cold pressed coconut oil, cheese, heavy cream and very rarely eat vegetables. I do put coconut oil and butter in my coffee but did so because I was at my ideal weight and was easily going below that weight so had to add the oils in my coffee to stop weight loss. I now eat at least twice a day or I will fall below my ideal weight and start cramping. I've been mostly carnivore for 2 years and keto for 3 1/2. I'm very strict and do not crave sugar or carbs at all. Life is good as long as I eat enough to be healthy and it is easy to know when I don't eat enough. My problem is my brain tells my body I'm full way too soon so I force down few more bites.

      Your weight stuck (plateau) reason as such: our body metabolism pathway is very clever and it lower its metabolism rate when it sense you putting less energy resources (food) to metabolize. Plateau solution is, you go back regular food habits (before your weight loss journey) for 2-3 days and let fool the body metabolism that you giving extra calories. Then on 3rd day, start intermittent fasting 18/6 or OMAD (one meal a day) for few days and continue the journey. Your plateau will break and you will loose weight.

      Be careful not to lose weight too fast,
      a pound a week should be safe. Avoid getting into starvation, where you lose muscle instead of fat. As you lose fat, poisons stored in the fat are released, another reason to go slow. Also need to give skin time to shrink.
      It took time to get overweight, so take a reasonable amount of time to reduce. The body also has to heal.
      It is a lifetime process.

    Just a couple of CRITICAL corrections Dr Cywes 1. If you heat/fry olive oil it breaks its bonds very readily at a relatively low temperature and turns into a trans-fat which cannot then be metabolised. 2. Bacon should not be eaten at all as it is full of nitrites, added as part of the process of producing bacon, which is proven to be a carcinogenic chemical compound.
    On a slightly less critical observation, although carbohydrates are generally unwelcome additions to the diet, we have to metabolically know why and remember that they can be, at low levels, tolerated well and burned as fuel by the body, especially when eaten last in a meal and eaten infrequently. After all, 99% of the reason not to eat carbohydrates is to keep insulin sensitivity strong and not slip into insulin resistance; which in turn then causes all the modern diseases as a consequence. So, let's keep insulin resistance as the main focus and reason, rather than worrying about having any insulin present in the bloodstream at all and staying permanent in ketosis at all times.

    • @andreahollindale9924
      @andreahollindale9924 Місяць тому

      Dr Berry addresses the nitrites issue in one of his videos, debunked the cancer correlation. You can buy bacon with no, or very little nitrates.

    • @theeventhorizon-valebridge9512
      @theeventhorizon-valebridge9512 Місяць тому

      @@andreahollindale9924 DR Berry only references it specifically in connection with colon cancer and without clinical evidence, just an opinion! He's found only one single report study, which doesn't do any of its own actual clinical research into nitrites, but instead only offers an opinion of how other research was conducted which again doesn't do any of its own clinical research. That report actually references many other cancers too, but Dr Berry himself, having accused others of "cherry picking", seems to have done so himself! So, many other research papers and clinical research suggest a cancer link, but one single opinion published in 2021concluded not a strong connection..
      Dr Berry has in my opinion, in no shape or form "debunked the cancer correlation." He's cited only a single instance of alternative opinions questioning a link to cancer. Whilst there is still a large question mark hanging over nitrites in my mind, surely it makes sense to be cautious. Bacon is also especially susceptible to AGES (Advanced Glycation End produces) due to how many people tend to cook it at very high temperatures, grilling and frying. Dr Pradip Jamnadas has some excellent information about AGES on his YT channel. (Another brilliant expert, a cardiologist/heart surgeon)
      Having seen various videos with Dr Berry, and although I agree with some of his points pushed, I am not convinced by him overall and I am not one of his YT followers. He is not an expert in anything and has financial interests in various ventures. I tend to pay more attention to research experts in their fields, such as Dr Ben Bikman and Dr Robert Lustig. These are people who have done the actual research, rather than just cranking up a YT channel to score hits!

      Carb addiction is like alcohol addiction. Some people can have 1 or 2 drinks a year, and not have to fight off intense cravings for more alcohol. Others have 1 sip of one drink and immediately crave more, and have a hard time getting away from daily consumption again. Same way with sugar addiction. I know people who can have 1 cookie every now and then, and not crave more. I have 1 bite 1 cookie, and that immediately triggers intense craving for all sorts of carbs immediately. It’s not a character flaw. It’s a chemical process and we all have to work with what we have. If you can have just one drink or just one cookie, good for you. But it’s important to understand some people just can’t do that.

    I was informed that 20 grams of carbohydrates is the limit in order to remain in ketosis on a ketogenic diet. Now Dr you mentioned 30 grams as a limit. As a type 2 diabetic I was informed that over 20 grams of carbs will continue to destroy me. Can you please make this subject clear? Thanks for your hard work, and the truth in the videos you provide us the audience!
