      @robinchesterfield42 5 років тому +1

      I was just thinking of exactly that! In fact, i've seen people try it. I know Anton Petrov had a video where he did that, and I'm betting some others have too...basically no, it didn't work, or it only worked briefly. The moonmoon kept smacking into the moon or the Earth, or orbiting the Earth seperately. :)

    • @LOTR_BTTF
      @LOTR_BTTF 4 роки тому

      I have tried it. Almost every time the sub-moon would eventually either get pulled into orbit around the host planet or the star. However I did get it to stabilize once using a pre-built scenario where Earth was a moon of one of the gas giants (I think Saturn), and I then added a small moon to Earth (I think one of Mars' moons) which managed to stay in a stable orbit.

      If you say... anything... to often, it will start to sound odd. This actually has a name: Semantic Satiation, which is actually very descriptive of both the effect and the cause. Semantic, meaning based on a set of generally agreed upon foundations or axioms (logic, or language), and Satiation, the _contentment_ of some feeling or desire, specifically in this case, the rapid use of neurons that form that word, causing the neurons to be used up, satiated.

    Yo, if they actually name them MOONMOONS, they can deactivate the Internet because it has come full circle and done its job!
    Wooow that would be awesome. I remember, I was there. I saw the original moon moon post back on Tumblr and saw it go viral, then become a meme, then become a classic, now it's like you know you're a 90s kid if you know it ^^

    • @animistchannel2983
      @animistchannel2983 5 років тому

      Anything on tumblr is not a full circle of the internet, because it's just the latest thing in a long line of things. What is this "moonmoon" you speak of? It's so new and obscure or subculture, I haven't even seen it before. It sounds like something out of anime.
      FYI the original internet meme was SPAM (Self Propagating Activity Methodology) based on the Monty Python viking diner sketch. I was there in the 1970's-80's when that became the first big internet meme on the arpanet & phone systems, and it's still going strong on the internet today. Spam may be as close to a god-meme of interactive communication protocols as a thing can get, the equivalent of computer systems nagging you from the back seat: "Are we there yet?! Are we there yet?!"

    I vote for moonmoons, because then we can extend the pattern and if I throw a rock into orbit of a moon's moonmoon then that rock becomes a moonmoonmoon. Are there minimum requirements for moons like there are planets, though? Maximum requirements? I've always taken the view that if the center of gravity is in the larger body, the smaller one is a moon, and if it's between, it's a binary planet instead for maximum size. But for minimum, can a grain of sand be a moon? Where do we draw the moonmoon line? :O

    I'm for either "Moonmoons," or "Moonlets". Alternately "Twoons" works (mostly because there might be "Throons" or "Foourns" out there too and that fun to say). "Dwarf Moon" sounds like a class of very small moon rather than a second order moon--Actually, "Second order moon" works better if you want a term that sounds scientific.

    I literally looked this up, just wondering, and I feel like being within a week of this video being uploaded was pretty cool, considering I’m subbed, yet I still missed the video.

    Matryoshka Moons
    That way we'd be prepared if there's moontiple levels of Matryoshka Moons. Second level Matryoshka Moon, tertiary level Matryoshka Moon, etc. until the moon is no more than a beach ball sized lump of rock.

    I got so distracted by the stapler-desk bit, I had to comment.... technically the only reason my stapler doesn't orbit my desk is because the earth exhibits significantly more gravitational force on both for that to happen. but if you put my desk and stapler in "space" there's a good chance the stapler could orbit the desk, assuming a pretty massive desk and a small stapler.
    I'm not a scientist, so I could be wrong, but my brain wouldn't shut up enough for me to finish the video unless I fleshed this out. :)

  • @MrFmiller

    My stapler might orbit my desk in the absence of overwhelming gravitational influence. That would make it easy to reach out and grab when needed.

    Call them quaternaries. The star a planet revolves around is referred to as its Primary, planets would be secondary, moons are tertiary, so a moon's moon would be a quaternary. The sequence goes primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, quinary, senary, septenary, octonary, nonary, and denary.

    Charon doesn't quite qualify, but the smaller moons in the Pluto system orbit around the center of gravity of the system and therefor around both Pluto and Charon. Strange enough for most of us.
