- We all know that many planets have moons orbiting them, but is it possible for those moons have little moons of their own?

Goddammit Moon Moon, not again.
Lucy's Corsetry this guy knows!
If they name them anything but moonmoon I’ll be thoroughly disappointed!!
eyyyyy
I went down to the comments just hoping someone would say this and I was not disappointed.
@Lucy's Corsetry aay show some respect :(

Hey Ellie
Doesn’t Rhea have rings? A ring is effectively a whole stable system of moons, just really tiny ones.
Theoretically. Unconfirmed, however, as of yet.
Ηι βγε Well they aren’t big enough to be considered moons I guess
A moon is a different thing than a ring. While rings are made up of tons of scattered debris, moons are a faxed point of debris. Nil tho, rheas rings ARE cool alright.
I meant fixed point

I was just thinking of exactly that! In fact, i've seen people try it. I know Anton Petrov had a video where he did that, and I'm betting some others have too...basically no, it didn't work, or it only worked briefly. The moonmoon kept smacking into the moon or the Earth, or orbiting the Earth seperately. :)
I have tried it. Almost every time the sub-moon would eventually either get pulled into orbit around the host planet or the star. However I did get it to stabilize once using a pre-built scenario where Earth was a moon of one of the gas giants (I think Saturn), and I then added a small moon to Earth (I think one of Mars' moons) which managed to stay in a stable orbit.
How many moons could a moon moon moon if a moon moon could moon moons?

If you say 'moon' too often it'll start to sound odd
If you say 'odd' too often it will start to sound ... odd.
@@squireob
If you say... anything... to often, it will start to sound odd. This actually has a name: Semantic Satiation, which is actually very descriptive of both the effect and the cause. Semantic, meaning based on a set of generally agreed upon foundations or axioms (logic, or language), and Satiation, the _contentment_ of some feeling or desire, specifically in this case, the rapid use of neurons that form that word, causing the neurons to be used up, satiated.
Scishow Psych did a video on this phenomenon (as described by kindlin).

"You're waiting for a moon. A moon that will take you far away. You know where you hope this moon will take you, but you can't know for sure. Yet it doesn't matter... Because moon's moon will always be together."
I'm glad this is an episode. I started wondering if this was a thing and what the required conditions would be a few months back.

moon ²
The first moon is the root node, moon', leaving child moons to be just moon. But I like mOo.n.
Yo, if they actually name them MOONMOONS, they can deactivate the Internet because it has come full circle and done its job!
Wooow that would be awesome. I remember, I was there. I saw the original moon moon post back on Tumblr and saw it go viral, then become a meme, then become a classic, now it's like you know you're a 90s kid if you know it ^^
Anything on tumblr is not a full circle of the internet, because it's just the latest thing in a long line of things. What is this "moonmoon" you speak of? It's so new and obscure or subculture, I haven't even seen it before. It sounds like something out of anime.
FYI the original internet meme was SPAM (Self Propagating Activity Methodology) based on the Monty Python viking diner sketch. I was there in the 1970's-80's when that became the first big internet meme on the arpanet & phone systems, and it's still going strong on the internet today. Spam may be as close to a god-meme of interactive communication protocols as a thing can get, the equivalent of computer systems nagging you from the back seat: "Are we there yet?! Are we there yet?!"
Dwarf Moons, we got Dwarf Galaxies, Stars, Planets etc, why not Moons too? Since Dwarf Planet's moons are called moons this shouldn't be an issue!
I was scrolling down to see if anyone else was following this logic. I am not alone in the universe!
I have a dwarf moon but its currently not in orbit, i call it brick.
Moon moon appreciates this video.
That would be a Dwarf moon right ? Lol

Yes, li'l moonlets sounds perfect 😁

I'd call them Plutos. Because Pluto was a demoted planet, it makes sense to call the moon of a moon, a 'demoted' moon.
Dylan can I be fan
Are you gonna be my final would are you gonna be my fan or what
My first thought was moonlets, but then he said moonmoons and I was sold. I had even forgotten about the meme, it just sounded adorable.
I vote for moonmoons, because then we can extend the pattern and if I throw a rock into orbit of a moon's moonmoon then that rock becomes a moonmoonmoon. Are there minimum requirements for moons like there are planets, though? Maximum requirements? I've always taken the view that if the center of gravity is in the larger body, the smaller one is a moon, and if it's between, it's a binary planet instead for maximum size. But for minimum, can a grain of sand be a moon? Where do we draw the moonmoon line? :O
Yeah but once you have to say moonmoonmoonmoonmoonmoonmoonmoonmoon, it becomes a mouthful of hooey.

Well we’re technically the Sun’s moon
Moonception is an amusing term and I personally feel Sub-moon is the most likely candidate to be officially approved- and I'm a very serious person most of the time so it's likely to get my vote.
the should be called moonules
The MOOMINS! What a great show
Just put an asteroid into one of the Moon's Lagrange points and call it a day (I know it's not in orbit but it's not going to go anywhere, so it's close enough for me).
Actually it is in a co-synchronous orbit with the moon around earth, so it is in orbit, just not in orbit of the moon. Nice try though.
I'm for either "Moonmoons," or "Moonlets". Alternately "Twoons" works (mostly because there might be "Throons" or "Foourns" out there too and that fun to say). "Dwarf Moon" sounds like a class of very small moon rather than a second order moon--Actually, "Second order moon" works better if you want a term that sounds scientific.
How about “mini-moon”?
Greek, German, and Latin never fail when you need a new name for something, therefore I propose these three: Seleniskos, Mondlein, or Lunula... they all mean small moon in Greek, German, and Latin respectively.
Yes but I plan to build a country Kalberinaka and the official language will be Kalberia. Kalberia for “moon of a moon” is Akhtezhan “pronounced AKH(a hard gh)-thezh-on”, so maybe use that.
Moonception!
I literally looked this up, just wondering, and I feel like being within a week of this video being uploaded was pretty cool, considering I’m subbed, yet I still missed the video.
Is this marketing for elder scrolls 6?

Matryoshka Moons
That way we'd be prepared if there's moontiple levels of Matryoshka Moons. Second level Matryoshka Moon, tertiary level Matryoshka Moon, etc. until the moon is no more than a beach ball sized lump of rock.
Moony McMoonface?
I almost died laughing hearing you say "Lil moonlets"
I got so distracted by the stapler-desk bit, I had to comment.... technically the only reason my stapler doesn't orbit my desk is because the earth exhibits significantly more gravitational force on both for that to happen. but if you put my desk and stapler in "space" there's a good chance the stapler could orbit the desk, assuming a pretty massive desk and a small stapler.
I'm not a scientist, so I could be wrong, but my brain wouldn't shut up enough for me to finish the video unless I fleshed this out. :)
My stapler might orbit my desk in the absence of overwhelming gravitational influence. That would make it easy to reach out and grab when needed.

Call them quaternaries. The star a planet revolves around is referred to as its Primary, planets would be secondary, moons are tertiary, so a moon's moon would be a quaternary. The sequence goes primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, quinary, senary, septenary, octonary, nonary, and denary.

Moon moon. The meme must be preserved for all eternity.
Now someone needs to write a children's picture book on a moon's baby moon!
The podcast Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe (Jorge of PHD Comics) just did an episode about moons. They called moon moons moonlets or monies.
I guess that means some moons can have rings for a while at least. That would be a cool sight.
I've asked this for a WHILE
I don't see why it couldn't happen in special cases... But the odds are ASTRONOMICAL
"...while Michel collins, the moon's own moon, orbited above them, in lonely vigil"
I love how his eyes light up before he is going to make a joke or say something cute, so every time we just know what is coming
We all know what to do....We need to build a moon moon,
maybe a giant space station we could see from Earth
The next planet we colonize outside of our system should be called New Earth, its moon New Moon and New Moon's moon called Moon Moon.
We had this discussion on reddit a few months ago
Oh hey, it's the Moon and its pet Moon Moon. Wait, is there a speck on the lens or do I see a moon orbiting Moon Moon now... oh dear.
Moonlet. I like it. Thanks for this. :)
Li'l moon lets 🤣 I love you guys!!
I would think It'd have to orbit really close to the moon so it feels the moons gravity more than anything elses
An interesting question. Thanks for answering it.
But I bet I could get my stapler to orbit my desk if it just has the right amount of momentum!
Whoooooosh...Wham! Bam! Ouch!!
Er, maybe not! ;-)
Thank God this video was not too long, although if felt like it.
Let's call them Dwarf Moons so that Pluto can have some friends.
actually, "moonlet" fits pretty well.
I think moon's moon should be called "Clrikgnsvccf" rolls off the tongue perfectly.
Charon doesn't quite qualify, but the smaller moons in the Pluto system orbit around the center of gravity of the system and therefor around both Pluto and Charon. Strange enough for most of us.
I vote for a muumi, and yes because of a difference between our heritage, you would likely type that as a "Moomin"... it's a creature from a Tove Janssons story.
I'd say we just call em moooons adding a pair of "o" every time we go 1 layer deeper
