  • In this video I present a broad view on Team Fortress 2 aim and deathmatch theory wherein I reveal advanced tips regarding how to properly move in metagaming your opponents in order to secure outplays. The video contains my own view as to ideal decision making in fights and recommendations as to how to improve at Team Fortress 2. The advice I give is broadly applicable across all classes. In watching, you will gain a wider insight into high level decision making and will hopefully be able to apply the concepts discussed to your own play in order to improve at TF2. This video also serves a dual purpose of undermining the conventional understanding that Team Fortress 2, and first person shooters generally, are centred around aim based skill. Instead, I argue that accuracy in aiming is largely a product of movement.

      ​@@speedody2171 To give the knowledge of advanced deathmatch movement is a very boring thing to watch though it is the most helpful.
      You have to be bored understanding it so when it is taught and you get it you don't have to over think at all.
      I agree this entire video is a slog fest, but not only dose he tell you what to do he shows you how to do it and where it is practical.
      Other guides I see is mostly dumb crap like, shoot medic, get high ground, use obstacles, ect. there's honestly not much out there of value.

    now THIS is a guide. for so long I've been wanting to learn evasive movement as medic, particularly against scouts, and have only been receiving incredibly basic and unhelpful advice like "strafe in a figure 8" and "hide behind teammates".     2:15 is such a great observation I have yet to hear someone make. The rare times my aim is completely on point as scout I am unkillable, but I have to be able to flick shots mid air-strafe over someone's head. You could never do that while tracking constantly.

    Ive seen a lot of guides for tf2 and aim theory in my 8 years of tf2 experience. This is an extremely cut and dry but extensive guide. Good job. You dont ramble and you articulate in a way that i struggle with trying to teach people who are just getting into tf2 and arent use to the gameplay loop

    Only 5 mins into this, i find it worthwhile how you can describe such minute subconcious things players do, that are so hard to explain in proper words.
    And the examples, they really help visualize them.

      Amazing video man. Are you a English literature student in school? The video structure and methods you used when explaining things are so well done. But one thing I want to say is that bot maps help with accuracy. As a boxer I can definitely vouch that training on a heavy bag and shadow boxing without fighting an opponent helps a lot. When I started trying to do airshots in tf2 a few years ago I didn’t know how to do it already from having picked it up from playing the game. Because in a pub you get a chance to do an air shot one time every hour on average (however a few years ago pub players weren’t that skilled as today really). That map for soldier and demo where the stationary bots jump repeatedly helped me a ton.

    Long and complicated way of saying practice makes you better.
    That being said, the representation and language you used was highly enjoyable.
    My only real complaint is the quiet microphone. Even with capped volume your voice was still pretty quiet

      Tracking is an illusion. Even when you think you are tracking it is largely just your brain using prediction. Try tracking a scout who is running completely aimlessly and has no sense of direction. You'll miss more shots than you would had the scout been 'playing normally', by which I just mean running in a path or moving in a way which makes sense for their position/environment and the game. If you were truly just tracking then it wouldn't matter how the scout was moving because you would have the same skill being applied in each scenario.

      yea as a long time demo main who occasionally plays scout to change things up, when i initially tried aiming like that i would whiff so much by aiming temporally behind where the opponent was in reality, but as soon as i started aiming like i would my pipes (but without the travel time) i started hitting absolutely everything
      perhaps one could argue that it's because i have much greater experience in that aiming style, but seeing scout mains saying to use prediction both here and in a few other "how to aim as [hitscan class]" guides im pretty convinced it's just the best way to do so

      Against people with lower raw aim you may be able to get away playing like that but someone with higher raw aim, you will get track to death. That's why aim trainers exist and it's proven that your score in an aim trainers highly correlates with your aim. Esport pros from games where aim is an important factor like valorant or cs, all use aim trainers because how highly raw aim affects your aim. It's just that TF2 design promotes the illusion that you can dodge hitscan like a projectile which is not true. While good movement is important, can't really "dodge" hitscan, you just make yourself harder to aim at.

    This is incredibly underrated. I've gathered the idea that you didn't exactly have a lot to work with as far as resources, but what you do have absolutely holds up twice as well as well-equipped UA-camrs. In other words, I think you're a future Uncle Dane with how well you make your script and a future Lazy with how well you analyze footage.

    Y'know i never realised this, i thought that hitscan aim was based on flicks, tracking and muscle memory, I always reacted to the enemy more than predicting him. That's why at times I was better at soldier than at scout.

    Can we get a section or installment that discusses the mentality when to switch between the scattergun and pistol? The pistol can deal good damage from a distance yet has random spread while the scatterguns center bullet will always hit and can be pretty good mid range. The mentality of knowing when to switch is vital

    em I could play quake live hello (though the robots here or the terminators are a real lords in terms of skill)
    Guide is good plus I have an issue with aiming due to... well I mostly don't see my crosshair (its still here but my aim almost fully is tied to combination of observing and instincts/aim patterns against players I played with before. When you pay attention to the enemy player and surroundings it's pretty hard to line up your crosshair with their juicy center for that 90 damage meatshot)

    3:32-4:45 this assumes that the enemy going to try predicting your movemet
    If for example he would try tracking you like a bot (with good ping) this wouldnt work

      My broader point is that humans always try to predict movement. It is so engrained within you that you can't help but do it, and aiming to predict is always going to be more accurate than trying to track like a bot given that we are not a machine. That is why I said "you are not a bot". You have to accept your limitations and play to your best within the framework that humans operate in.

That is a misconception, he is taking into account where they are moving, but just adapting very quickly if they don't move where he initially predicted they are. It isn't possible to just delete your mental predictive ability. You are always going to be predicting to some degree, because that is just how human aiming works.

      @@scidja8567 Your explanation is inconceivable to me because it isn't possible to just completely ignore where a target is heading. Prediction is just such a fundamental part of how humans aim, and it is engrained within it. Even pure tracking in itself is a form of prediction because you are following a target and therefore have to predict where that target is heading in order to ensure your next bullet lines up. You can go watch Quad's videos and slow them down, and you'll see that he doesn't actually keep his crosshair exactly locked on at all times. He just keeping his crosshair very close to the target so he doesn't have to make huge adjustments when the opponent moves in a way he wasn't expecting, such that it gives off the illusion that he is locked onto the target at all times.

      The aim spectrum is applicable irrespective of what your opponent is doing because that is how people aim. Whether you like it or not, I am an advanced player. You are in the vast minority of viewer's opinion in thinking that the video is rambling, and I broadly disagree with the assertion given that for the explanatory parts of the video, I am making a relevant point in every sentence I speak.

      From the way I see it ur spectrum thing looks more like an "awareness" spectrum, also I feel ur rly underestimating how good ppl can rly aim, and ur guide isn't even a proper guide, I literally know a 12 (nvm it's only 6) minute video that's infinitely better

      @@speedody2171 My video is specifically catered to aim theory and utilising movement in DM to explore how to win fights; something which wasn't explored in the video you linked and is something which is sparingly discussed. The role of scout doesn't directly relate to the central themes of the video, and as a general principle the 'roles' of classes are more fluid than what you would perhaps give them credit for. Scout in particular, is generally a flexible class. There is no objective truth to what its role has to be because it can be utilised in a multitude of different ways. I think this is a scenario of different strokes for different folks. The vast majority of the viewers have found it interesting and engaging. It's your prerogative to not like the video of course, but fundamentally it is a fairly meaningless critique given that it is entirely my discretion as to what sort of video I want to produce and what topics are selected to discuss given that its my own video I made as free content. You don't lose anything as a consumer if you don't enjoy it and you retain the option of not watching if you don't want to. Moreover, it doesn't matter if 1 out of every thousand or so don't enjoy it and you as an un-approving viewer don't get to determine the brevity of the video. I'm adding value to an area not often covered by others, and for that reason the video is going to be distinct in format to how others have presented their videos. If my video is not something that interests you, or otherwise you just don't appreciate its contents, then its clearly not for you and you can just stop watching and move on. But, that doesn't mean the video has to cater to what you would have preferred to see.

      Well it assumes that you already have a firm grasp on the mechanics of the game, and tells you about certain things with this assumption in mind. I have a lot of time in this game so the info conveyed was pretty easy for me to follow. I think it explains very well how people aim and emphasizes the paramount importance of movement when dm-ing. I would recommend watching it again, I think it'll make things click better since when you're watching something for the first time, you're too busy trying to absorb new information at the same time it's being told to you which can lead to not really retaining everything. Watching it again allows you to focus less on trying to follow what's being said as it happens and more on focusing on the finer details and like the substance of it since you already have the broad strokes of it down from the first viewing you know what I mean

      @@pudsla9427 i have experience in this game, just i find it hard to focus on his voice, i easily get distracted by the gameplay and then i have to go back a few seconds

      @@qwertyzyz it sounds like a great way for you to learn to focus on something while out of game then. a lot of players cannot listen to comms for the life of them and it sounds like that is probably a big issue for you as well. So basically work on your ability to focus.

      This criticism fundamentally misunderstands the video. The broader thesis of the video is that movement, in a sense, is your aim because the player with the better movement will typically determine who wins any given fight.

      @@MrWicked360 Now that is true only if the former does not know how to aim properly. If you have ever played against a good player you would know that changes in movement won't affect their ability to destroy you

      @@scidja8567 I fundamentally disagree. The better player is winning their fights because they are moving better than their opponent. Changes in movement completely turn fights. If I'm playing MGE, and I've been rocket jumping in the same sort of way repeatedly with a certain strafing pattern, and then suddenly I do a completely different strafe on my next jump, that is actually going to set off a better player most of the time because they were used to aiming in a certain way against you and now they have to adjust.

      @@MrWicked360 with projectile classes its vastly different since they are pure prediction and no aim involved so i can't talk on the projectile classes behalf

      @@scidja8567 You still have to aim projectiles. You can miss a projectile even if the person you were predicting doesn't change their movement pattern. It is exactly the same, only there is a delay. If it makes you happier, you can just repeat the example but substitute in scout for soldier. If you've been doing a certain strafe against a scout opponent repeatedly, and they have got used to predicting that movement pattern, and then you suddenly change it up, then more than likely you will throw your opponent off momentarily and they will miss given that they weren't predicting you to change.

      I think you have missed one of the central core points of the video, which is that someone's ability to track you isn't an quality independent of everything else. I.E. your movement will have an effect on, and determine where someone aims on you and consequently you can certainly use that to make people miss.
