Seems like a good trap although I would use goat wire or chicken wire instead of mesh because most aquatic turtles have claws that will rip through the mesh with just a little effort. Definitely gonna try this one though.

Works great. Caught 2 the day after I put it in the pond! I followed the instructions but used 4" PVC pipe, chicken wire and 4- 29"x10" boards.

We made this trap exactly as instructed and works well as a sun bathing ledge as the turtles climb up the boards and sit on the pvc pipe for hours without dropping in the basket. They drop back into the pond later in the day. We don't know what to do short of greasing the pipes to make them slick. Suggestions?

Smart trap idea! You might consider using something stronger than screen wire...i think the claws of a big one would tear through it.

Very good point, we dont have big turtles in CA, but in other places thats very true!

Sounds very effective but I definitely consider stronger netting.
    Awesome idea though!

Take a gallon jug paint it brown.tie a large treble hook on some braided line and make a jug.the line only needs to be 3to5 inches long.no weight.also attach a line to the jug as a retreive line.throw it out where you see him most.use a small bream head and tie it down good.set at dark, have fun.

concepts is awesome, my only question is will the cloth mesh get ripped open by a large turtle trying to escape, could u use instead a thicker wire mesh?

Wish someone showed how to build one from 55 gal barrel like old timers used to use. Those were common in the day but idk exactly how its made? Barrels are cheap on craigs, even free at times. The plastic ones would last a decade easy.
    Basically its the same idea.

the turtle might try and tear a hole from below the mesh though instead of the ramp

@@Creating4lpha That may be for the best. I am not 100% sure, but it looks like it is illegal to take turtles by trap in CA. It is also illegal in my state.

Ever consider that it might have simply sunk? I mean, you didn't cement the PVC... water could have got in
