Snapping turtles are my favorite animal! One time I was creek walking and saw one the size of a barrel walking under the water. It was the most beautiful, amazing moment ever. It felt like I was looking at a dinosaur.
Also to add, pick them up by grabbing both the top and bottom parts of the carapace, just like Beau did. The turtle's backbone is fused to the top shell and if you only lift it up by the top shell it can fatally injure a turtle, especially a heavier species like a snapper.
Caught many, many snapping turtles through the years. You can pick em up any way you want, not gonna hurt em. They're tanks. Just watch the head, they can reach almost to the middle of their backs. Good eating too.
KJ plenty of ways to hurt a turrtle when picking it up. Especially if it’s bigger. You wonder why people don’t hold puppies up by the tail? It may end up being soup as all mine do, but food deserves proper care and handling.
So cool. This animal has been around since the time of the dinosaurs and we are fortunate to live among them and learn about them today. Thanks for sharing!!!
That guy's a giant! And believe me, I know. I catch snapping turtles everyday in the local ponds and streams in my town! Good job for teaching people not to pick them up by the tail! It drives me nuts when I see videos on Instagram of people doing that!
I love snapping turtles, and this video. I really like your careful, gentle approach to picking this guy up. I've been with people who made the mistake of picking one up by the tail - you're never supposed to, because it injures their spines. Good job!
Exactly I was thinking the same thing you might be walking in the water and you never know that you're stepping on them until they move or either you get injured
I found one in the middle of the road in the city. Very busy road and I’m surprised he made it to the middle. He was angry. I blocked traffic with my car while I tried to figure out what to put it in to transport it. He was a big one. So finally I just picked him up and put him in the passenger seat of my 300zx and took him down to a park with some swampy lakes. Fun adventure.

Good eating. Ol gal brought one by the house she caught in the creek crossing her bridge. She said she would fix it it I got it cleaned. Was 10 years since I thought of them snappers, I keep a close eye out now.
I had no idea that snapping turtles lived in my area until i saw one swimming in a creek near my house. They are truly amazing creatures. I also once found a baby snapping turtle while kayaking, and let it bite my knuckle, it was so cute.

When I was seven years old I lived in South Dakota. In the summer I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle near Burke South Dakota. We would go fishing in Burke lake which was full of snapping turtles. I used a bamboo pole then. My cousins knew when I had a snapper on because I would drop my pole and takeoff running. I was scared to death of them. Thanks to my cousins. They told me if one bites me on the only way to get it off was to wait for a thunder storm and the thunder would scare them away. Karma if you want to call it that way but when I went to put another fish on it there were only fish heads on it except for my northern pike. It had not been touched. Everyone came running as I was laughing my head off. I still don't like those snappers. I enjoyed this video as it brought back memories of a good time.
My mom told us about the thunder thing. I had never heard anyone else say it until now. They used to bring me Terrapins or Box Turtles to play with when we were real young. I had seen Snappers so I knew what they could do so I was reluctant to touch the terrapin but momma said "it's ok they don't bite". Well she was wrong. Not sure exactly what happened but I was sticking my finger in it's face and it bit me.That wasn't the first time momma got me. She had me help her work on a push mower once that wouldn't start, so she had me hold the plug wire while she cranked on it to see if it was getting fire. It was getting fire.
Thank you for this video! I live by a river and usually see snappers in the road. I always want to help them cross but I was just scared to lose a finger.

I saved an alligator snapper once. She must have climbed out of the lake and somehow wondered onto highway 161. A car hit her and I made my friend stop. She was HUGE, they cracked off the front of her shell but she was okay. I took her home and bought her a big pool and our yard was fenced in with a wooden fence so she could go to the pool and get out and walk around the back yard. I called her Queen Bitch cause she was always snapping at me. lol But I loved her. Thank you for being so kind to turtles. :)
