- Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, known in English as Baron von Richthofen, was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories.
Originally a cavalryman, Richthofen transferred to the Air Service in 1915, becoming one of the first members of fighter squadron Jagdstaffel 2 in 1916. He quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, and during 1917 became the leader of Jasta 11. Later he led the larger fighter wing Jagdgeschwader 1, better known as "The Flying Circus" or "Richthofen's Circus" because of the bright colours of its aircraft, and perhaps also because of the way the unit was transferred from one area of Allied air activity to another - moving like a travelling circus, and frequently setting up in tents on improvised airfields. By 1918, Richthofen was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and respected by his enemies.
Richthofen was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme on 21 April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films, and other media, predominantly under the colloquial nickname "The Red Baron".

It's hard to think this was more than 100 years ago. Everyone in the footage is long dead now.
Yet thir legacy shall endure, 1000 years later people still have not forgotten the names of Achilles, Hector, Alexander, Caesar, Octavian, Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antonius Pius,
Marcus Aurelius, Aurelian, Justinian and Belisarius,
Some of these guys were dead days after this was filmed.
The deep sigh and a bit of hollow stare at 2:13 . . . . . . . . .
Great video, your work has brought them to life 100+ years later
Look at that handsome devil, Knights of the Sky, never die
I got a model of his triplane for free at a thrift store. It's all broken, but I loved it from the moment I saw it on that shelf. Sad to learn he died at 25, also won 80 times... war's not worth all these lives
Very Good Footage!
Thank you Bill
The great noble warrior eagle was NOT brought down by another gallant aerial foe but brought down by Australia's soldiers manning machine guns.

Funny fact :- According to military historians. Good pilot? He was ok. There were better steerers in the sky. Then what? He was an exemplary ,merciless Bavarian marksman. Just simply adopted into airplay..
Bavarian?
