John Robert "Joe" Cocker OBE was an English singer known for his gritty, bluesy voice and dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. Most of his best-known singles, such as "Feelin' Alright?" and "Unchain My Heart", were recordings of songs written by other songwriters, though he composed several songs for most of his albums as well, often in conjunction with songwriting partner Chris Stainton
"With a Little Help from My Friends" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, from their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and sung by drummer Ringo Starr (as Sgt. Pepper singer Billy Shears), his lead vocal for the album. English singer Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help from My Friends" was a radical re-arrangement of the original, inspired by Cocker's influences of Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles.

Paul McCartney’s comment on the passing of Joe
“I was especially pleased when he decided to cover With A Little Help From My Friends. I remember him and Denny Cordell coming round to the studio and Saville Row and playing me what they recorded. It was just mind-blowing. He totally turned the song into a soul anthem, and I was forever grateful to him for doing that.”
The Woodstock version is the ultimate performance of this song. It blew us all away!
If you listen to this version you have to remember that his back-up singers got stuck in traffic, so the band did their best to sing the back-up portion.
I liked the alternative version of the Woodstock, which has the picture of interpretation since he looked very high
@@drulipabs I do like his Woodstock version the best but I do find the backup singing distracting at times (although you get used to it). I don't think he was actually very high - I think he just gets so into the music he appears very high.

Wasn't the last word from Joe at the end of this song at the 1969 Woodstock performance, the word "Beautiful"?
Decades earlier, at Woodstock, Joe's backup singers couldn't make it because of traffic problems. Joe's band sang backup (in falsetto) as best they could. It became a generational anthem! This song belongs to Joe now, he wrested it away from the Beatles with soul and heart.. Gotta love Joe!

Fun fact: Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin fame played the guitar on this track when Joe published it on his album. Page was a session guitarist then, that is how he earned all the money he later used to kickstart Led Zeppelin!
I find it interesting that this arrangement is by far the definitive version of the song. Apparently there was some other (pretty well known) band that did this first but this is the artist you think of when this song is mentioned.
(Sorry, Ringo, we still love you, but Joe Cocker poured his whole heart and soul into this song)
Not many singers as visceral as Joe Cocker. The man felt every word and note. True legend.
Nearly every song Joe Cocker covered he made it his, his total absorption in the lyrics is astounding. If you haven't already seen it the early version as at Woodstock will blow you away. I saw him at several festivals here in the U.K. in the late 60's & early 70's & his band (The Grease Band) always backed his power equally.
The Woodstock version blows this away. THis is OK, but no more than that.
He actually changed the words in the first line.

When I hear an artist cover a song and truly make it their own (think Johnny Cash and "Hurt" or Whitney Houston and "I Will Always Love You") I say they have Cockered it.
Joe probably looked like an old man before he left school, but I think he was past his prime here.
Before Pink Floyd and John Farnham, Joe always found the BEST musicians and backing vocalists available.......and superb arrangements.
Regarding the opening vocal note......Joe often uses off and / or weak notes to enhance the message.
It doesn't matter if it is deliberate or an accident, they mostly sound perfect for the moment.
Best example would be the weak, high falsetto notes he used to Finnish the classic version of You Are So Beautiful ( to me ).
So far removed from professional vocals yet so dam good .
I'm not sure if it's the official recorded version or a recorded live version ( was over 35 years ago ). lol
The beauty of Joe Cocker and Leon Russell and others was the rawness of their voices. They weren't technically perfect, but they had so much emotion and feeling in their signing. It just gets into you and brings out a different level of emotions for the songs. His line of heart and soul is what makes music.
Joe Cocker has one of those identifiable voices that cannot be confused with or mistaken for any other artist. His performance of Unchain My Heart from this same concert is well worth a reaction as well. 🙏✌️
I was 1 years old during Woodstock now 55. I am amazed every time I watch the video of Joe at Woodstock. He pours his everything out there, as he always did. Rest well my friend.
I saw Joe Cocker in concert in 1969, a few months after his Woodstock. I didn’t know who he was at the time but he blew my mind.
It's so interesting how people interpret sounds differently, based out our individual listening experience. When I heard the organ part at the top of the song, it suggested prog to me. Even though I've heard his version of the song before and knew that it wasn't going to go that way. Btw, it's quite a relief to find out that even experienced singers struggle with the first note. It trips me up every time.
The Woodstock performance of this is probably my favourite one.

I'm really happy to hear the respect for these back-up singers. They nailed this one. I'm an old guy and have listened to lots of music from a lot of genres. And this is one of my favorite songs mostly because of what the ladies bring to it and how skillfully they do so. Freaking gorgeous. Good one, Beth.

I found your channel searching for Heart, then i saw that you had a video on Jussi Björling( who is from where i am from) who is my fathers favourite. Then i came to think of one of my favourite singers, and who is so underated. What i feel when i hear Joe Cocker is unmatched.
When he sang at Woodstock he was young and roar which was dynamic this a older more mature Joe but still so good and sooo good cheers from OZ
The Saturday Night Live U.S. TV show late great, John Belushi, used to do his impression of Joe Cocker, the best one done! Cocker did a character in the movie plotted around Beatles songs (Across the Universe) a couple decades ago as well as starring in the video tour movie of Cocker (1971) called Mad Dogs and Englishmen.
I was fortunate enough to see Mr Joe Cocker around 2012 in Austin Texas. He was with Huey Lewis & the news. Live is unbelievably better & cannot compare to any recordings, as it is with most musical artist. He was epic.

It's interesting you spent some time on the backup singers. If you watch his Woodstock performance (which you can find here on UA-cam), his female backup singers got stuck in traffic and missed the performance and the band had to fill in on the back up role, some of them singing in falsetto to to mimic the female vocals. He also had some additional talent accompanying him because he received the invitation to appear on very short notice and many of his regulars weren't available - many of his friends rallied to join him for that performance and were only able to do two or three practice sessions with him before the show and it was amazing! You might like watching that performance in your spare time and maybe even do a reaction to it.
Then the Mad dog and Englishman tour they put togeather rather quickly with a hugh number of musicians

He touched very deeply
This is from the 90s. I saw Joe in concert 1994 (Woodstock 94--the peaceful one, not the 30 years anniversary riot one in 99). He came onstage at 10am on Saturday morning and by 10:45, we were in anticipation of that scream in this song. It is such an emotional release, it felt great sharing it with over 400,000 other people that sunny morning before the rains came that afternoon.
Joe is well into his 60s here, he is slightly less powerful as he was in 1969.
John and Paul from the Beatles talked with Joe in 69 about this song and they pleaded with him to copy more of their tunes. So he let loose on "She came in through the bathroom window" an Abbey Road song that he just took off on his own direction on.

Grew up loving this song, saw Joe twice, once in Hamilton with Stevie Ray Vaughn (3 weeks before he died) and again in Vancouver with The Guess Who. Stunning live.
The live performance of this song he did at the Mad Dogs & Englishmen concert with Leon Russell in 1970 is the ultimate come to Jesus experience! It's a truly amazing experience to watch and listen to.

I’m pretty sure the contrast between his voice and the backing singers is highly calculated. I just turned 31 and between discovering new artist I keep coming back to artists like Joe Cocker and Tina Turner, because what these two had in common is they surrounded themselves with tallented musicians on stage and were never afraid to let them shine too for the sake of the music. So it’s probably no surprise Stacy Campbell did backing vocals for both of them, and they also “shared” Jack Bruno on the drums.

There’s a documentary about Joe Cocker where they say they had to be careful where this was placed in the setlist.
He needed time to warm up his voice for the big scream, so too early and he wasn’t warmed up
If he did it too late he couldn’t hit it either.
Shivers went through me.
Music is my own religion. Rock and roll is our current "Tower of Babel", a universal language that unites us all as a species. Let us hope some deity does not come down and crush our tower, sending us out in all directions, lost and separated.

WOW! I really enjoy watching your videos. I love your authentic reactions to the music and your explainations of what is happening during the performance. I also appreciate your statement that the performers do not have to be perfect. I believe you can be good without being perfect. It brings to mind a comment that I saw years ago regarding Charotte Church. The comment was: "That girl is definitely not classical trained." As a musically untrained individual, I thoght she was outstanding, especially at such a young age at the time. Your comments at the end of this video bring to mind another quote: "The most unselfish thing you can do is take care of yourself, then no one else will have to." Please keep up the great work.

I see that you like this exceptional artist Joe Cocker, you should listen to the last 2 hits before he passes away which are extras "Fire it up" and "I come in peace" but less known to the general public because they are studio recordings, he unfortunately was not able to sing them in public because his illness took over before, for me this gentleman and Tina Turner were my favorite voices and I had the pleasure of seeing them live during my stay in Vienna, Austria in 1996 and 1997

It is worth noting that this song became a classic for a generation after his seminal performance of "With A Little Help From My Friends" at Woodstock in 1969 which of course later featured in the Woodstock Movie.
One of the few Beatles covers that was better than the original.

Joe Cocker was the High Priest of Blue-Eyed Soul, and he preached through his love of music.

Joe Cocker's The Simple Things is one of my all-time favourite tracks. I have always though he was a very underrated singer.

Not sure, but I'm guessing it is, find some classic performances of this song. The sound and what you commented about is the same but different, the song is the song, might have changed a little over the decades, but it works because it is.

It's funny that you should say that he "uses tools from singers from past times..." because he is a singer from past times. He started singing this song in 1969. I know of no other singer who sang like him. I still don't know the reason for his incredible animation. I've never seen another singer as animated as he is.
When it comes to reactions you are one class act. I think you are great.
I recommend you watch Joe singing the Oscar winning song "Up Where We belong" with Jennifer Warnes at The Night of The Proms, Antwerpen 1992. Why ? Because I believe Jennifer's reaction to singing with Joe may be similar to what yours would be.

For some reason the introduction melody reminds me of walking on squashed fruit and veg in 1969 at Woodstock
This has got to be my Number One cover song by anyone doing a song from The Beatles. There are some good ones to be sure. Aerosmith doing "Come together" is always up there. But even that can't pull at my heart strings the way Joe Cocker could.
I love Joe Cocker but actually this song is one of my favorite because of the background vocals. The Woodstock is version the same. Background singers i think make the song!
