Sorry, but Joe liked a doobie or 2. Got caught with a bag of grass when he came to Melbourne, which gave him bag of unnecessary grief. But there's nothing wrong with that, it was the time of rebellion against the staid and afraid generations that came before for Gods sake. I lived in that boring shitty time, and it was an important statement to make against the so called puritanic Christian themes of the 1950s to early 1960s. RIP Joe you were the best!

I so agree with you. Before MTV made it about showmanship and the look. These guys were all true artists and musicians. Sometimes the musicians were so into their music they weren't aware of anything else. So inspiring to watch.

I kinda love how Joe would play 'air guitar', 'air drums', and pretty much 'air-everything-else-that-only-existed-in-his-own-head'. A tremendous raw talent. Like a force of nature.
Musically we truly were the blessed generation. We witnessed true masters of their craft, live and in person, spilling their souls out for us at every concert we attended.
I know, it's so true but listening and watching these younger people discover "our" music makes me realize how fortunate we were...quite unbelievable in the scope of talent and quantity of music we had coming at us in our formative years.
I'm 62 and looking back now gives a perspective that one couldn't conceive of back then or even now unless you hear this music through someone hearing for 1st time.

No he isn't drunk or stoned. Joe has some awkward movements when he performs, but that's what he does all the time. He gives every ounce of effort when he's on stage.

Joe looks like he's out of control but if you watch him, he controls every aspect of the performance. His band direction is outstanding. And you can tell he LOVES Ray Charles.

Actually, according to people who were there, Joe was gobbling down anything and everything he was given. Tour almost killed him, but he made it through.

I saw Joe Cocker and the Grease Band at the Baltimore Civics Center on December 7, 1969 when I was 16 yrs old. Along with Janis Joplin and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. I swear this concert changed something in my brain. I know it blew my mind, and music became part of my soul and an intrinsic part of the rest of my life, up until this very day. I love that you expand your horizons and open yourself up to all kinds of music. There is lots of other great Joe Cocker music out there to enjoy. I'd like to specifically recommend a song of his from the mid 80s, "You Can Leave Your Hat On", official video. It is a hoot! Love you guys! ✌❤

I never got to see Joe Cocker live, but I did see the movie when it was first released and it was wonderful! I also was able to catch Leon Russell in concert before he died. He shuffled out on stage like an old man (he was!), sat down at the piano, and exploded! It was glorious!
I saw Leon just before he died too. He sounded great. Also saw Dr. John a couple times.
All these years later, his voice still gives me the chills! 😅
Joe had synesthesia, causing his random movements and literal " feeling" the music through motion. He is an icon.
Love Leon Russel. He's calm but had such a unique way of performing. Of course Joe will always be my favorite. I was a teen when these guys hit their prime. We had the best music of all time. No match today. These guys would run them down. We were the peace and love generation. Peace and love man.
While listening to this I was doing a mental list of the music we enjoyed during the '60s and '70s. People, we were BLESSED!

36 yrs ago 12 year old me first heard this song as the intro for "The Wonder Years" tv show and instantly fell in love with it and as I got into my teens watching Joe Cocker at the original Woodstock and then again at Woodstock '94 really made me appreciate this masterpiece.🔥

Joe Cocker's performance at Woodstock is legendary. You have to see it. When he originally recorded this song. the guitarist was a young session musician named Jimmy Page.
He pulls those vocals out of his soul, masterful performance.
The first vision of the 2 backup singers at 5:47 shows Rita Coolidge on the right-hand side, with the dark hair and beautiful soulful looks.. Both girls had sublime vocals..
I heard one of his backing vocalists asked once,"when you get the phone call to ask you to sing with Joe's band, what did you say?" To wich she replied," That's Joe Cocker man. You say yes!"
Joe's cover of the Beatles' "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" is also pretty damned good.

Carl Radle on bass, who would go on to play in Derek and the Dominos, Bobby Keys on sax, the only man to ever get kicked out of the Rolling Stones twice, two legendary drummers in Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon, and the only guy in the world who could have pulled all this together in the time allotted, Leon Russell, The Master of Space and Time. There's a whole Wikipedia full of Rock and Roll history on that stage.

One of the best concerts I ever went to was Joe Cocker live in the early 70s at the old Sydney stadium.
We were dancing in the aisles and on the seats.
The place was out of control.

I found the record "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" in my father's collection when I was a child... I fell in love with the music! My father and I managed to see Joe and bands about 5 times in the land of Australia... it became our thing, you know, Joe's in town, we going? Take time out to listen to the album (it's a double, and pure bliss!). Much kudos to Leon Russell, as he was the band and musical master.

I really love the female back-up singers, enough to make a grown man weep, the way they held each others hands and were totally and spiritually connected! And I gotta imagine the genius behind this mammoth musical direction must be the very talented Mr Leon Russell. But let's not forget or overlook the absolutely gut wrenching performance from Mr Joe Cocker, a legend in his own time. RIP Joe, I miss you so goddamn much buddy!

Try Leon Russell at the Concert for Bangladesh doing the "Jumping Jack Flash/Youngblood" medley. The stage was a collection of GIANTS including Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, George Harrison and and ARMY of other performers! I guarantee you metal heads are gonna LOVE it! 🎸☮️🕊️✌️🌹

I saw Joe Cocker in concert in 1969, about 3 months after Woodstock. I didn’t know who he was at the time but when he came out and started singing it blew my mind.
I saw them in NYC at the Fillmore East. Amazing! Saw Joe and Leon many times after. RIP Joe and Leon.
You should have watched the 1969 Woodstock perfomance instead. it's even more gritty. And BTW this is Joe's 6/8 time interpretatation of of Beatles tune song by Ringo Star on the 1967 Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. "Ringo Who?" Oh...God help me...😂

I first saw Joe in 1972 at Western Springs stadium in Auckland NZ. He was so blind drunk that I was one of approximately 20,000 people who walked out. I cautiously went to his concert at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in approximately 1990. He was fantastic. I forgave him!!!!
This came out when I was 15. Leon Russell and Joe Coker were our party music on Saturday nights among other great singers back in the 70s. Leon Russell was high most of the time ha ha!

I can't get over how fucking amazing the live recordings from this era are. And the cinematography is out of this world.
Joe had so many people in his entourage, that when he returned home, he was broke. Seriously, he had to sleep on the couch of a friend of his. Unfortunately he had little control over his finances, his life in general. He finally met his future wife and together they bought property in Northern Arizona and she took care of him. Later in life he was asked to perform for the Queen which was a great honor. He feared though that he couldn't perform but when it was time he hit every high note and gave the performance of a lifetime.
I'm turning 30 in four months and I cannot believe still thanks to my parents I was blessed to see this guy live 3 times. We had the Joe, Mad Dogs & Englishmen LP at home when I was growing up and I absolutely LOVE the Space Captain. But the 2013 tour rendition of this song is definitely also worth checking out, I love how his delivery changed with time.
I booked Joe Cocker and the Grease Band for University Freshers’ Ball. A night to remember for ever. I would to hear from others there that night.

There is an amazing video of Ray Charles did Joe Cocker singing Feeling Alright. Joe Cocker was a one of a kind and that voice omg what can you say? He said because he never played an instrument moving the way he did was his way of feeling the music.
Joe sang , played every instrument and conducted the whole thing with his whole body. Truly a wonderful artist sadly missed. You don't see performances like this anymore!
Another reason they were able to pull the tour together in such a short time is everyone in that day and age loved Joe and wanted to perform with him. There are some top headliner type performers in that band behind him and amongst the backup singers.
The Woodstock footage of this song is just as epic. The girls singing couldn't get to the show on time so the band members had to fake the higher pitched voices and it turned out pretty epic.
I agree with everything Greg said, but I would go one step further and just say that this is WAY better than the original. Not criticizing the Beatles at all. If anything, this is a tribute to what brilliant song writers they were.
They did what they had to do at the time, make a great pop song, and they achieved that. But Joe took it to another level, probably the level it needed to be at.
You guys reacted to another Beatles cover, Help by John Farnham. John also slowed the song down, giving it the emotion it deserved.
Song writer Jimmy Webb (Galveston, MacArthur Park) once said that a good song always finds it's own rhythm. I think Joe and John found the right rhythm these Beatles songs deserved.
