Vocal Coach reacts to reaction to analyses analyzes analysis of breaks down The Traveling Wilburys - Handle With Care (Official Video)
Original Video without interruption: • The Traveling Wilburys...
Check out The Travelling Wilburys here: www.travelingw...
The Traveling Wilburys were a British-American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Following Orbison's death in December 1988, the Wilburys released a second album, which they titled Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3, in 1990.
"Handle with Care" is a song by the British-American supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. It was released in October 1988 as their debut single and as the opening track of their album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. The song was the first recording made by the group, although it was originally intended as a bonus track on a European single by George Harrison.
* "Nelson Wilbury" - George Harrison
* "Otis Wilbury" - Jeff Lynne
* "Lefty Wilbury" - Roy Orbison
* "Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr." - Tom Petty
* "Lucky Wilbury" - Bob Dylan
“Handle with Care" was the Wilburys' most successful single.

It's funny that you mention Elvis. A reporter once asked Elvis what it was like to have the greatest voice in music. Elvis replied,"You need to ask that question to Roy Orbison"
Actually George got everybody together because he needed a song to be on the B-side of his latest single. But when people at the record company heard the song they said it's to good to simply be a flipside, it should be it's own hit single. So they decided to do a whole album together. Fortunately for us, the fans, they did.
The conception of the band goes back further than that. In 1986 George hired Jeff to produce his album, Cloud 9, and the two legends immediately became best friends, what with Jeff actually moving into George and Olivia's house. While producing Cloud 9 George proposed to Jeff that they start their own band. Jeff said great, who would you like to be in it with us? George named Bob Dylan, and asked Jeff who he'd want in it. Jeff replied, Roy Orbison. Then they agreed that Tom Petty should join, too.
You got that right it’s sad Roy died, just when he was making a comeback too just think of what they could have produced only 2 of them left now Bob and Jeff, there is one other singer who could have fitted in with them and that would have been Gerry Rafferty sadly he’s gone too.
Yeah dude the documentary 0n UA-cam about them is awesome…Tom Petty is my #1 all time
Fortunately for us they did Volumes 1 and 3!!!😉😉👌👌👍👍✌✌
Three friends George, Jeff and Roy were having dinner. George's own words, Jeff offered to help with the B side, Roy asked if he could tag along, they had to stop by Tom's to pick up a guitar, when they got to Tom's and Tom heard what they were doing, Bob has a studio in his house. The rest is history.
The Travelilng Wilburys is what you get when great talents leave their egos at the door.
George would have been 80 this month. Forever in our hearts!♥
This is how you do a supergroup. Everyone shines in all the songs.
Every one of their songs had that feeling of a bunch of friends just having a blast making music with each other.
Which is how the band came together, George needed help on a b side for a solo album and started calling up his friends. his friends just happen to be these guys lol
So right you are. Just watch the true history of the Traveling Wilburys.
They were just a bunch of guys, knowing and admiring eachother, who became a group by accident, more or less. Essentially because George Harrison didn't like touring.
@@ZSAZSS09 George said in an interview once that he was still willing to play in a group, but wanted it to be people he enjoyed being with.
The Greatest rock super group ever. And yes, they were just doing it for the music, for the fun of collaborating on writing good songs and playing together. Their most brilliant move was including Roy Orbison.
Yet, remarkably, they had him sing only ONE song solo while Dylan sings several as the lead.
Seems astoundingly daft to have Orbison in your group and hardly hear him doing what he did so famously well.
@@steeltrap3800 Bob was featured on the second album in many songs because Roy had passed. The first album, as far as I have heard, did a good job of balancing who sang the most on each track. But I would always make sure to put Bob and Tom at the bottom of the group when it comes to lead vocals for sure. Their voices are truly not made for leads.
Got to give a shout out for Jim Keltner on drums, such a great drummer, has played with everyone who's anyone. Does just what's needed for the song, never too showy, just class.
That’s Buster Sidebury!
Amen to the great Jim Keltner
You will hear George's wonderful voice showcased in the Beatles tunes "Here Comes the Sun," "Something," and "For You Blue," among others. All four of the Beatles had solid rock 'n' roll voices.
Not to mention While My Guitar Gently Weeps :)
George was also the first Beatle to have a #1 solo album.
George sang lead on 31 Beatles songs....and....in the Beatles first American concert, George lead off with Roll Over Beethoven. Ringo too was a good singer - listen to the last song on the White Album, Goodnight. John wrote it as a lullaby for Julian, but on the album he wanted Ringo to sing it, which he does really well
A reporter once asked Keith Richards what the biggest difference between the Stones and The Beatles was. He said "we only have one singer; they have 4."
@@ITILII You're right about Ringo, apart from 'Good night' I like a lot a couple more from him 'I'll Still Love You' and his tribute to George 'Never Without You', those three have been in my heart for so long.
Roy Orbison’s “You Got It” is another gem that was written by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne
Superb 😊
The greatest assembling of talent ever ,roy was adored by the others and in another video they have a chair gently rocking away with Roy's guitar sat upon it , beautiful tribute
Gotta love the Wilburys, just five good friends that also happened to love making music
Love making music together
They knew it was filled with imperfections. In fact they named the band after that fact. They said “if something is imperfect “we’ll bury it in the mix”. Thus naming The “traveling’we’ll Bury’s”.
They were indeed great friends, and George Harrison made sure the friendship didn't suffer during the creative process.
I bet he gave all the others a ukulele as well
@@erickvermeulen9734 No doubt.
@@erickvermeulen9734
Tom Petty told the story about George having a trunk full of ukuleles, and gave him a few. And told him "you never know when you might need them". Or something like that.
Roy was the GOAT... what a man, what a tragic life. X
Hi Beth! Enjoyed your reaction and comments! Not sure if you're aware, but George Harrison was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. His fellow Traveling Wilburys bandmates Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne inducted him. His widow, Olivia and there only son, Dhani accepted the award. Then Petty, Lynne, Dhani, Steve Winwood and Prince performed George's song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Would love to see you react to this amazing performance. It is just remarkable! Thanks!
Prince's solo at the end of that is ... well, just don;t shut the video off too early.
@@i.marchand4655Totally agree!!
@@i.marchand4655 Yep. Word has it Prince was ticked off at not being named one of Rolling Stones' Top 100 guitarists, so "hold my beer." 😂
Harrison had many solo hits such as My Sweet Lord, Bangla Desh, Blow Away From, Got My Mind Set On You, when we was fab, Isn't It A Pity, Give Me Love, etc RIP Roy, George, Tom
The Wilbury's were a family band, what a great family to be a part of!
My mind boggles at the sheer number of gold and platinum records in that room. Plus an MBE and a freaking Nobel Prize.
I had to experience a few decades of life before I realized, but, wow when Roy comes in... in just three words, his "tired" is so incredible and evocative and unique....
EVERY ONE of these guys are absolute LEGENDS! And they managed to put their egos aside and make TWO awesome records. This is, without ANY doubt, the best "Supergroup" of all time. Hell...you have 3 of the best song-writers OF ALL TIME here. Shocking they put out hit singles...
Yep. Volume 1 and Volume 3. 😁
So sad that only Dylan and Lynn are left.
There's actually a video that came with a Wilburys CD in which the members explain the origin story of the band. Bottom line: it wasn't planned, but rather grew organically out of some friendly jam sessions, in which one friend brought another and so on.
And Dylan sold all his music…sad….something Tom Petty would NEVER do
It's on the Wilburys UA-cam channel
… brought a friend. ‘Here’s my friend. He can play and sing. Have you heard any of his stuff?’
Keltner is still alive as well in February 2024... And it's Lynne.
Thanks, Beth! this was, in IMHO, the best "super-group" evah! this song features George & Roy, but there are quite a few others... each of these superstars were incredibly generous in sharing the spotlight... I hope you listen to more of them! appreciate your reaction on this one...(p.s. Jeff Lynne - such a key member, who never got enough credit for his vocals.. in addition to his songwriting!) - Finally, it's so clear how much they enjoyed each other... (oh, wait.. and drummer Jim Keltner!.. who was offered a credit and declined.. he was integral to their sound!)
With 4 others singing, you can really hear how wonderful Roy's voice is
Its raw, or organic, because these guys did this entirely on their own. No corporate stooges, execs, etc. All on their own, purely raw, organic and out of the utmost love, admiration and respect for each other and all they brought to the world of music, and of course, just how much joy & fun the got from each other and the experience as a whole. Its also a direct product of their era, the time when music was ENTIRELY about and based on the genuine talent and abilities of musicians, and not any importance or focus was ever on "performance/showmanship", looks, extra stuff like lighting and stage props, or even how they dressed. None of that stuff mattered back then. But by 1980, the massive shift into showmanship, looks, outfits, etc being emphasize over talent and ability went into full force. By 1990, we wound up almost entirely based on that instead of the stuff that matters, which is again, talent, ability and passion. And that's how we got to where we are now, where everything is quite literally, "Overproduced, Commercialized", as is said in the song at hand.
That's why its so rare for so many of us to find any music and musicians we truly like/love and enjoy now. That said, there often is one or two songs from bands or musicians in the modern era that stand out from the rest, and become long-standing favorites. Speaking of such... I recommend doing a reaction and vocal analysis of Seal - A Kiss From a Rose. I think it'd also be kind of interesting to hear a vocal coach/expert do a analysis of Akon's vocals. From say, Lonely, to start, to Hold My Hand, which he did with Michael Jackson shortly before MJ passed.
When Bono recorded She's a Mystery to Me with Roy he was shocked, because he whispered into the microphone rather than sang. Bono wrote the song for Roy.
You hit it perfectly with this one Beth ,just a bunch of friends making outstanding music.
Just watching your smile tells all, this music was to be enjoyed
I remember when this album came out George did an interview, and I can't recall his exact words, but he said he really enjoyed making this album because it was the first one where he wasn't concerned what anyone else would think about it, like Bob has done his whole career.
You will never see today’s singers get along as well as The Traveling Wilburys did back then during the late 80’s and early 90’s
Love it!! I never get tired of this song! 5 absolute legends, egos checked at the door, making good ole rock 'n' roll! This was not entirely an 'intentional' group. George had wanted some 'friends' to sing backup for a b-side to a single, which was this song. He was already working with Jeff Lynne, who was producing his solo record, and they both mentioned names of whom should joint them. Lynne's 'hero' was Orbison, Harrison really admired Dylan. Harrison & Petty became friends around this time, so he jointed the mix. George's record company thought the song too good to just be a b-side, so they got together at Dave Stewart's house (of the Eurythmics) to write and record.
Apparently, Tom Petty was giddy as a schoolboy saying 'We got Roy Orbison in our band!!!'
There is a great 1/2 hour video on the formation of the band and the songs. Check it:

Thanks Darren. Nice link! 🙏🏻
Pure music, pure talent, and wow Lefty Wilbury! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Roy Orbison was from Wink, Texas, thereby the accent haha. His life was full of trgedy but he had the voice of an angel. I was born in '53 & my, mom kept the radio on all day to the local rock station. Roy & Elvis made an impression on me at a very young age. I love the Willbury's, such distintive voices.
Elvis and Roy were contemporaries. Dylan's and Petty's voices are so similar.
Fantastic supergroup, with no glam or fanfare. Just a bunch of buddies making great music.
Roy's voice gives mee goosebumps. Elvis said Roy had the best voice.
I was born in 1961 and all of these guys have been my musical heroes throughout my entire life. When I first heard this, and saw the video, I was literally shedding tears of joy. Such a wonderful experience to happen for them and their fans. They all got along great from what I understand. They had so much respect for each other that they were happy that when they got together it was so much more than they had ever even expected it to be.
Hello Beth, the strength of the team is coordination and complementing each other. It is much better when they sing together. The voices are in harmony. They have a natural, gentle and lovely voice.
Whether you like the music itself or not (i do), its amazing that this group existed.
Yes, they were all friends of George and they recorded this at Dylan’s home studio for a B side. But, it grew into an album.
Beth the thing I LOVE about your is when you critique / analyze songs ( and this is only the 3rd Vid of yours I have seen)
you are so FULL of empathy and compassion for the artists, giving the most insightful ideas about music that I have ever heard
==================
we live in a world of people who are so negative you are the opposite , your positivity has restored my faith in human beings
I am 66 and have grown rather bitter about life but you my friend have single handedly made me regain the optimism and positiveness of my younger years
thank you
George Harrison had a great capacity for friendship. George became a great fan of the ukulele. He insisted his musical friends have one and hang out with him and play tunes. Tom Petty said George's car trunk (or boot) was full of ukuleles and he would give them out at get togethers. George was a nice man.
Great reaction video, as always! Love how you ended the reaction because I agree wholeheartedly.
If you want to listen to Roy Orbison by himself, may I recommend "Running Scared" for a future reaction video? I think it really shows the breadth of his singing ability. I know it's from the era of Doo Wop (and the early days of Rock and Roll), but his voice sounds almost operatic in the song, especially at the end.
Also Blue Bayou, Love Hurts and many others.
Tom Petty said he'd never been more intimidated than when he was singing with Roy Orbison ... such respect for the man with the golden voice.
Tom and Dylan sang so clean when they sing with Roy. You can understand every one of Dylan words.
Great reaction video! I love the Traveling Wilburys. Every one of them has such an iconic voice. Would you ever consider reacting to the duet of Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks in "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around?"
Ladies and gentlemen, please stand up, there is a Nobel Prize in Literature in the room
Love Wilburys, all those superstars! and Jeff Lynne!
To me what makes this song is that contrast between the angelic voice of Orbison and that rough, scraped out of the gutter sound of Petty/Dylan harmonizing right after. It just works.
All absolute LEGENDS: Bob, George, Jeff, Roy, Tom and backed by another Legend, on drum:Jim Keltner......"Roy Orbison is the best singer I've ever heard!" - Elvis Presley
Each artist had massive success apart from The Travelling Wilbury’s. so nice to hear their work together as a collection of colleagues and friends.
I think these guys together represent what you and other voice coach reactors emphasize: don't try to sound perfect or like someone else. Find your own voice. When their albums came out I had no problem knowing which one was singing from the first words. Just imagine how boing it would have been if they all sounded alike.
Today's music, with auto tune etc.... I find it very hard to find singers who don't seem to sound anything other than an over produced product. But when I do I love it.
If you want a pure pop sound by George Harrison, you should react to "Got My Mind Set on You", Beth. The video is fun, too!
There are two videos actually, I like both but prefer the one with the teenagers flirting to each other ☺
Arguably the greatest supergroup ever formed
There’s a great Traveling Wilbury’s documentary 0n UA-cam and it’s awesome…get to see them create each song and they were all very good friends…especially Tom, Jeff and George…Tom told stories about them staying up nights constantly just playing ukuleles
Love this song and this is a great breakdown of why it's so good!
Hi Beth. Listen to while my guitar gently weeps by The Beatles. It's George Harrisson singing. Thanks for a wonderful reaction video 🖖🖖🌹🌹
Talented musos jamming and enjoying themselves they were fantastic, great pity so many are no longer with us.
I love you youngsters digging older tunes.
Peace on earth.
They actually were great friends! Love them all!
George was lead singer of many Beatles songs, dig a little more, you will find out how Great he is! Love!
Came here to say this - Paul and John wrote heaps but George often got the singing duties. Very much underrated as a pop singer.
I'm 81, and believe me, . . . never stop searching, there is some great music out there!
I love this- eclectic group of musicians. Thanks for your reaction Beth Brian Birch
I haven't listen to this song in a long time I forgot how good it is. Nothing fancy, good vocals, great vibe...
They were best friends. It is said they all agreed to “check their egos at the door” upon entering Dave Stewart’s home studio. It surely worked.
I have always said George had the best voice of all the Beatles .
Paul, John, Ringo, George
All equals sharing one mic no egos here just four mates together.
Bless you for saying that George is a good singer. I agree ♥️
I remember when this first came out/released like it was yesterday. I was a Senior in high school and my mother, born in the mid thirties (Silent Generation), not knowing who the musicians were at first glance, thought - Oh, isn’t that sweet? Some older musicians finally made a hit song.
She was a little embarrassed when she learned who they actually were.
Loved this band so much. It did start as kind of a goof arranged by Jeff Lynne, because they all knew each other and go on well. He was on the Adam Carrolla podcast for a long interview maybe a year ago.
The Traveling Wilburys were a combination of some of rock & folk's greatest talents all put together (as friends and admirers of each others accomplishments) and what came out was pure %101 talent. When you are in a happy place with friends you care about and admire - this is what you can accomplish!
Regarding regions: Orbison was a small-town Texan, so his natural speaking voice was closed-mouth, like the characters in King of the Hill; he learned to sing that way to hit high notes. Petty was from Gainesville FL, a Southern drawl which comes out in his music. Bob Dylan was Minnesotan but his singing voice is mostly an affect. Lynn and Harrison were of course English, not sure how their regional accents impacted their singing voices.
George was from Liverpool. There is quite a lot of the accent coming thru- more than most of his songs- care, there, been.
George's voice sored with confidence he never had before with the Wilburys. This was once Jeff Lynne became his producer and engineer. He knew the EQ and compression to apply to George's voice to really bring it forward. And I think that gave him more confidence to really sing out with verve. It started with George's "Cloud 9" album and went right through all the Wilbury's material. Compared to George's early solo work, it's like he had been reborn.
There is a documentary on the making of.. Tom was to solo after Roy and was like, oh great - will anyone sound good going after Roy! They all were like Roy was a monster to follow, so the duet of Tom and Bob came in! LOL. Great to see your reaction! ❤
CLASSIC! ICONIC! EPIC!
I hope you got clean and centered yourself. Some of us have been there. Keep fighting.
Great video as usual Beth. I think they all knew within themselves that the potential for greatness was there with all the talent right there. Roy's vocal on this track is my favorite.
You said exactly what I tried to say on your take on "end of the line". I just watched your video, and the first I have watched of yours, and I commented they got together to have fun. I'm glad you see that.
I am in my seventies, and George and Ringo were my faves of the fab four. I loved the Travelling Wilburys. Love rock, and some of every other genre. I am a fantastic dancer, but refused to become famous for all of my artistic skills. I value my freedom.
That was why The Beatles were as great as they were; they had the most multitalented musicians, singers and composers. Never equalled, never surpassed.
I absolutely love hearing your observations, I learn stuff and like how you put things.
There ain't never been nothin' quite like this
Come on, baby, it's the Wilbury Twist - I always imagine the situation, when George Harrison walks into the meeting with the record company guys, telling them, you know, I have this little song, some friends helped out, well, what do you think of it. The shock in their faces when they realize, what they have in their hands...
Straight up country on the guitars, and it’s Roy and Bob who grasp the fact it’s a lullaby, rocking chair, soothing the baby, which matches the message, Handle With Care, a lullaby for adults.
Surprises me how many forget about Jim Keltner on the drums, other than some back up vocals he is the quiet Wilbury brother. One of the greatest Sessional Drummers in the world who has played with many big names, amongst them predominately with the Beetles. Both solo and main group albums. He was often found backing up Ringo on drums, or filling in for Ringo if he couldn't be there for whatever reason. Ringo also did a lot of solo work later in life and dragged Jim around on the drums to help out.
Great group they sang a beautiful cover of runaway
a Dream Team of the musicians !!!
“Here Comes The Sun”
And
“Something”
( B side of “Come Together “ if you can fathom that after listening, two songs of that caliber..)
The Beatles,
George Harrison lead vocals on both.
Both are stunning
When I hear Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou" sung by Linda Ronstadt all is well with the world
Well said. They were all already successful, they made this group and crushed it while having fun.
Underrated classic.
What a great band. George Harrison really started to blossom in the Beatles last couple of albums and then post-Beatles with the Wilburys.
He was the first Beatle to have a hit after the breakup.
You seriously need to do the tribute song to Roy by the TW "Travelling wilburies - End of the line" 👌👏👏
She beat you to it, Peter. lol It was the first song of theirs she reacted to, and as always, she did a great job. (But if she hadn't already done so, I would've recommended it just like you did. Cheers.)
Yes, she already did it
ua-cam.com/video/8HRXINr7aBI/v-deo.html
this is 5 super stars that are just getting together having fun and it could not sound better the fact they shared it is amazing
It is the ultimate super group, there will never be one like it again! A rock'n'roll, a Beatle, A poet, a rocker.
Great analogy and review Beth, keep rockin!!!
Beth they were all fans of each other. They were all excited because Roy was in there band.
Wonderful thoughts on this album and you are right they all were best of friends! I wonder, have you listened to Georges early solo album, All things must pass? it is pure spiritual joy to listen to, so many wonderful songs!
Man what magic and talent.
Roy Orbison barely opens his mouth and this stunning sound emerges
It is well that you picked up on the bit of 'ragged' sound which they could afford to play around with because they were so confident and loose. It is certainly part of their appeal. Great energy!
This album is fantastic!
love the story that they all were familiar with each other and had been helping bit by bit, but it gelled one night when by happenstance two were co-producing, wanted an instrument of a third, and they were contacted by a fourth that day who wanted to go see Orbison playing. so four of them went to see Roy. When he asked what they were up to, I think it was Dylan who joked "we're putting a band together. want to be in it?" - "sure"- on the drive back Harrison was in the back seat, very quiet, occasionally repeating "I'm going to be in a band with Roy Orbison". Heard this back in '90... so fuzzy on exact order of the 1-2-3-4...
