The Microcomposer is a sequencer, outputting CV (control voltage) signals. This is before MIDI, and exactly why MIDI was developed in the first place was to replace the very complicated CV control protocol.. which wasn't even standard but you had to make all kinds of ad hoc stuff to marry things together at times. You just hoped that the specific voltage range matched your synth, of course using Roland stuff with Roland Microcomposer was the surest bet. So, the MC does not produce any sounds, it is the sequencer. The cost is understandable when you have to consider the complexity of storing, playing back and sending multiple channels of voltage control signals in 1977... I mean, i got some formal education on the topic, and have worked with analog synths since the 80s and i haven't got a clue where to even start, using '77 tech. Using 2023 tech a similar device would probably take few weeks to design and build, there is probably some Pi or Arduino code for it ready, if not.. ChatGPT... And the biggest cost would be a power supply and the connectors..
HI Beth! I have watched and enjoyed your channel for quite a while although I just recently re-discovered you just now as it seems my UA-cam algorithm somehow got changed and I lost track of you for maybe the past 8 months or so. I've always found the quality of your videos and expert commentary quite enjoyable however watching this reaction it appears that your analysis and production quality has skyrocketed to another level and certainly a step above any other channels doing "voice coach" reactions. Outstanding. I'm just curious when you started adding in these additional dimensions to your videos and if you do it all yourself or whether you have hired professional staff to assist you with it. I think the quality is getting closer to some mainstream televisioin programming which is commendable for sure.
I used to live across the street from Jeff Porcaro the drummer for Toto. He would often reserve tickets for us when they played concerts in LA. Great guy. Great band. His death in 1992 was tragic.
Yeah, an awful loss..... a great great drummer. I remember hearing an interview with a guy from a scots band who Jeff sessioned for who thought he was being a smart-arse when Jeff asked him, what he wanted the track that Jeff was playing on to sound like and he gave a flippant answer of "well, I want to hear it like..... " and Jeff started playing and James was absolutely stumped...."er yeah, exactly like that, actually" LOLZ The Porcaro shuffle was inspired/influenced by the Purdie shuffle, which was used by Bernard Purdie, one of the great session drummers used by Steely Dan.
The amount of respect you have given Toto brings me so much joy. They are truly under appreciated and the fact that they are no in the HOF is a crime. Thank you for taking the time to give such a wonderful breakdown!
Toto has always been one of those sacred bands to me, everyone involved is just world class in talent and musicianship with insane songwriting... As session musicians they were EVERYWHERE... most notably Thriller would be a completely different album without them. Lukather has an excellent ability to know when to shine and when to sit in the background and add so much flavour to a song without demanding the spotlight, they all just know exactly what the music needs.
This is an amazing version! I love the fact that the piano and guitar solos are different. You should check out Rick Beato's analysis of the studio recording where he plays the isolated vocal tracks. *chef's kiss*
Beth, I am impressed. You are not only a vocal coach, but the reasearch on the original instruments used in the original recordings etc surprised me! Great work on this video. Well, the band were real studio musicians, who knew what they were doing. And it‘s right, you don‘t find that on today‘s music (if you can even call it like that…) But I definitely enjoyed your reaction!
...that was awesome! - both: that live gig (I only knew the studio version + official video - also fantastic!!) and you, Beth, with your analysis, background info and enthusiasm... had so much fun with this! 😎💖
I love your passion. Make sure you watch that entire concert. You are definately one of the best vocal coach reviewers out there. Your new format is excellent explaining technicalities and using diagrams. My mom was an opera singer my father a multi instrumentalist and I a lowly head chorister in an old English church in Cambridge. By the way your voice is also excellent and I wish growing up I had a teacher like you instead of the stodgy old classical purists. You make music fun!
Your knowledge of the song is remarkable! Major props to Amy Keys and Mabvuto Carpenter supporting the harmonies here. Two of the best backing vocalists in the business.
I've seen Toto live with Joseph and they are outstanding! Their album The Seventh One with Joseph on lead vocals is a masterpiece. So many great songs!!
You forgot to mention Nathan east on bass and vocals. He is truly one of the finest bassists ever as well as a great singer. The man knows how to fill the "pockets" with real taste and perfection! Thank you Nathan- love your style You belong in this collection of top shelf talent!❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Surprised that there was no mention of the song's inspiration: the actress Rosanna Arquette, who essentially the Pattie Boyd of the 1980's - breaking the hearts of musicians and inspiring amazing songs as a result. She dated both Steve Pocaro of Toto and Peter Gabriel, inspiring "Rosanna" and "In Your Eyes"
This song for me is one of the best pop songs ever. It's both catchy but also super complex. It's a masterclass in songwriting, musicianship and arrangement. Even those cheesy lyrics are made to fit the melody.
Steve Porcaro with the synth solo. He is a true master of synth programming. A musical genius. He’s also the youngest and last surviving Porcaro brother from the band. R.I.P. Jeff and Mike.
G'day Beth, I've never seen/heard this version of Rosanna so thank you very much for chosing it as it gave me Goose Bumps, while the original is a great song this live version took it to another level. When you went back regarding the high harmony the backing singers are female + male & the Bassist, so that male high harmony may have been either of them. Ps Steve is a LEGEND!
@@treeduck3705 Oh thanks for that, didn't know he was a touring member of Toto for a few years, my memories are mainly for his touring with Eric Clapton & Phil Collins during the '90s.
Check out his Protocol stuff. With a variety of top shelf musicians including Andy Timmons, Anthony Jackson, Walt Fowler, Jeff Babko, Ernest Tibbs, Greg Howe, the list goes on....
Rosanna is a songwriting and production masterpiece. The drums with those delicious ghost-notes on the snare shuffle, the synth solo ❤❤❤, the breakdown/pre-chorus, the confounding break before the chorus, the vocals, the brass…etc. The song has nourished my soul for decades.
The song wasn't originally supposed to end with that 2 minute groove. But during the studio recording the band kept playing when the song was over and studio Producer Al Schmitt kept the tape rolling and they kept it. Rosanna was written by David Paich and it was the first song they recorded for TOTO IV
I love that you as a vocalist know how that beat was derived. I’ve known for a long time since I’m a drummer/percussionist, and I admire Jeff Porcaro, as well as Bonham and Purdie.
Thanks for this video, Beth. I love the in depth analysis of the vocals with visual diagrams, and the dive into all the musicians, their role in the song, and their contributions to music. Bravo!
Luke had the time to do it because he has been doing it since the mid 1970's. You are 100% correct, every person in this band were the first call studio musicians in LA for their individual instrument. Just amazing caliber musicians because as a person once told me, "in the days before ProTools, there were pros you tool" . If you got called in for a studio spot you had to be good and fast because studio time was money.
The most amazing thing about this song is that it was recorded in a single live take plus vocal overdubs. The instrument tracks were done on the 2nd take. In the interview he did with Rick Beato, Lukather said they stopped half way through the first take, then kept the 2nd take. What you hear on the original recording was the first time they played the song all the way through after verbally working out the arrangement in the studio.
She is Amy Keys: An American singer and vocal artist who has toured with Herbie Hancock, Toto, Phil Collins, and recently Lyle Lovett. She is also a vocal arranger and vocal coach with a BS in Biology & Chemistry from Bowie State University and a Voice and Opera degree from the Peabody Institute of Music and is a lovely person as well.
Had the pleasure of see Toto live a few times. Excellent musicianship as you’d expect combined with great songs and vibe and fun. Steve Lukather is one of my favourite guitarists
What a great song and great reaction, thank you for this! This was one of those songs that's so catchy you can't help but like it. On a side note since you mentioned the high harmonies. Three of the greatest high harmony singers in rock are Randy Meisner & Timothy B Schmidt of the Eagles, and the king of high harmony, in my humble opinion as a former musical theater and rock vocalist, Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young). I'm convinced he could harmonize with the wind. Great job, please keep doing what you do, and thank you!
Almost ever song on this album was played on a Yamaha CS-80. It was a monster of a keyboard. It weighed about 220 lbs, and put out lot of heat. It was never designed to go on the road, but they took it anyway. It was used extensively on Africa. The CD-80 was a revolutionary design for its' time. If I remember correctly it could store four patches, and they all had to be programmed with sliders.
This song has incredible writing, arrangement and playing and it's been one of my favorite songs since I heard it when it was first released. In addition to the thousands of songs they performed on individually for other artists, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Jeff Porcaro all played on Michael Jackson's Thriller album and Boz Scaggs' Silk Degrees album (one of the best albums of the 70's IMO). Steve Porcaro also wrote the song Human Nature on the Thriller album.
More musical royalty: David Paich is the son of legendary orchestrator, arranger, pianist and band leader Marty Paich who worked with Sinatra, Ella, Sammy, and more. You can tell David learned a lot from his Dad! 🙌🏽🔥
Jeff Porcaro did a breakdown of the Rosanna shuffle and he explains it as the Purdie shuffle crossed with the Bo Diddley beat (think "Hand Jive"). You hear a similar thing going on in Fool in the Rain and Jeff does mention that he drew inspiration from that application of the Purdie Shuffle as well, but the Rosanna groove is Purdie Shuffle and Bo Diddley. Either way, absolute genius and very tricky to play well. Rosanna shuffle is the hill many drummers have died on!
Far more than I would love to be at a Toto concert, I would love to be in the studio while they record. All of them are so skilled and talented that almost every other musician today should be ashamed to call them themselves "musicians".
My favorite song by my favorite band. Been my favorite since 1982. I've been checking out your original stuff over the last few days and think your work is just as professional. Your voice would fit in well with all these virtuoso musicians.
It's funny you mentioned that the drum shuffle section reminded you of the Purdy shuffle. Toto's drummer Jeff Porcaro is an alum of Bernard Purdy in that they have the honor of being heavily featured in Steely Dan material.
Wow, thank you for this content! I became a big fan of Toto by rediscovering these videos of their 35th anniversary. Here, unfortunately, there are not all the historical members of the band who have also recorded this beautiful track, and that you have rightly mentioned, but some of them have been replaced by Simon Philips on drums (direct replacement of Jeff Porcaro until 2014 from about '92) and Natan East, a great bassist and session man (who played with them only for this tour, if I’m not mistaken). Even today they manage to convey great emotions with their songs, what an incredible band!
Every time it still strikes me how excited you get over those 80 synths. To be honest, they still give me goosebumps when done correctly. TOTO is one of my favorite bands so I absolutely love this review. TOTO has been criticized as a studio band (and they are) but they are actually pretty good live. Thanks for your reaction!
Joseph Williams was in the band in the mid to late 80s he was on 1 or 2 albums , loved the tracks stop loving you and pamela. Pamela was actually written to pay homage to Rossana lol
Great educational and entertaining reaction to a classic song. I have to admit, I have never heard this version before now. And in its own way, as good as the original.
Toto is an amazing band with very very talented musicians. Every single song in each one of their albums was extremely well produced. The musical arrangements on every instrument is thereto make the song so rich musically and they were the guys to go to for many other artists when they needed guidance to produce an album or even a single song. What a great band of talented musicians with so many great songs.
Beth, Thank you for reviewing this song based on my and probably many other’s recommendations. This was a great live version although you could go down the rabbit hole listening to many older live versions with both the Porcaro brothers. Even though I am a vocalist myself I appreciate the nod you gave to the percussion performance and especially Jeff Porcaro’s contribution to the funky feel of the song.
Beth, LOVE...your energy is contageous. Nice breakdown of the vocals. Your excitement is sooo cool. Beth, you're correct about this band, tremendous musicians. I miss Jeff Porcaro terribly, to this day...May he rest in peace! This version of Rosanna was the 35th anniversary show in Poland. TOTO IV, is not the extended version of Rosanna. The album won no less than 6 Grammy's. Listen to it all...truly wonderful. They still rock today. Just differently without JP.
Great reaction! If you look carefully, there are 2 backup singers rear left. I believe on the second chorus you can make out that it’s the lovely black lady singing that high harmony. Love it!
The lady is Miss Amy Keys. Toto featured her on GorgyPorgy. She sang backup with Phil Collins as well as many others and just this last summer toured with Lyle Lovett.
Thanks Beth for this video. Although Toto is my favourite band for decades now I did not know that Joseph Eilliams is John Williams‘ son. I also appreciate that you have extended your videos with graphics and also background information beyond vocal coaching topics.
Thanks Beth. Now I’m hooked on this song and on this video. And recorded live in Poland. The unity, love, and spirit are electric. The politicians and the corporations need to get out of the way. With music like this, we’ll take it from here.
Beth you should listen to ALL their music. Even my 11 year old kid loves them and sings every word at their concerts - we love them live or original!!! I love love love steve lukather’s voice
actually Lukather met the Porcaros when they were in High School (he was the same age as Steve Porcaro). They would hang out at the Porcaro’s house and play, and sometimes older brother Jeff would sit in. Later Jeff recommended Luke to Boz Scaggs and that eventually led to a studio recording date to cut a Boz Scaggs album. Luke was off and running in the studios from there. Toto was formed a little later with David Paitch, Jeff Porcaro, and Luke already established as studio musicians.
great to see Nathan East on bass, he could well be the high harmony as he has a great voice too. there are also a couple of backing singers, plus at least on keys player singing harmony too, Simon Phillips doing a great job on drums too, remember seeing him play with The Who in 1989. Steve Lukather ( as with Phillips and East) played on literally 10000s of singles and albums, including Micheal Jacksons biggest hits, as did future Toto Keys player the great Greg Philligaines)
I enjoyed hearing this on the radio back in the day, a studio recording of course. Interesting bits of history, diagrams on vocal production, info on the synthesizers. We could tell how much you liked the song - you hardly stopped moving! You should have been in that audience movin' and groovin'. 6 March 2024: I watched this a second time and got to thinking that what you really need is a little dance floor in your studio for songs like this. 😊 All the best, MB
From one Scot tae anither Toto were inspired to start the band as teens after being fans and seeing live in the US , Emerson Lake and Palmer. The keys played by Keith of course! Now I’ve said that you will hear keys in their music! And Roseanna was my Italian great grandmothers name! Plus you mentioned Greg Lake singing while chewing gum? He said after, in the heat of the lights and nerves his mouth would get dry and the gum kept it wet to allow him to sing!

Love your reviews, you do your homework. Toto is the most talented of all rock/jazz bands
It's funny you mentioned that the drum shuffle section reminded you of the Purdy shuffle. Toto's drummer Jeff Porcaro is an alum of Bernard Purdy in that they have the honor of being heavily featured in Steely Dan material.
Hold the line is absolutely 💯 epic, shows all their talents. Well worth a watch x
I love how Beth expresses her love for music.
Your interruptions are very informative, so much so that I like them, which is not true of most other music reactors.
Joseph Williams was in the band in the mid to late 80s he was on 1 or 2 albums , loved the tracks stop loving you and pamela. Pamela was actually written to pay homage to Rossana lol
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Watching your pure joy, while reviewing this song, put the biggest smile on my face😊
Brilliant analysis! Your tips on the 'effects' electronics is an added bonus! 👌
I’m trying to remember what synths Toto was using back then. (Emu?) I don’t think, as an ex-Moog employee, this track featured a Minimoog.
Wikipedia says Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80, Prophets (Prophet 5 most likely) and (Yamaha) GS-1.
This was a joy to watch (and chair dance) with you!!!
Best live version ive heard them do for sure!! So much fun watching you enjoy this, Beth!! One of my dads absolute FAV songs 🥰🥰
Great educational and entertaining reaction to a classic song. I have to admit, I have never heard this version before now. And in its own way, as good as the original.
I've always said Toto had a standard of excellence that was unsurpassed. True then true now. Love Toto. 🤘😎❤
You’re so freaking adorable! Hahah I love this song!! I blast it in my car from time to time!
Beth,
Thank you for reviewing this song based on my and probably many other’s recommendations. This was a great live version although you could go down the rabbit hole listening to many older live versions with both the Porcaro brothers. Even though I am a vocalist myself I appreciate the nod you gave to the percussion performance and especially Jeff Porcaro’s contribution to the funky feel of the song.
This is so good! ❤
Love it!
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_Keys
The lady is Miss Amy Keys. Toto featured her on GorgyPorgy. She sang backup with Phil Collins as well as many others and just this last summer toured with Lyle Lovett.
@@jamesanthony5257 thanks for that! I will check out her other work.
I do recall her voice from Georgie Porgie. Outstanding!
Beth’s reactions are a treat.👍🏻
Beth, you should check out th ballad “I Won’t Hold You Back” that is on the Toto IV album. So beautiful.
Agreed. That is Luke’s best vocal, in my opinion.
This "live in Poland" show is absolutely top shelf. I can't get enough.
For me the best ToTo concert. Poland 35th anniversary.
So great to see your reaction to this tremendous band.
great to see Nathan East on bass, he could well be the high harmony as he has a great voice too. there are also a couple of backing singers, plus at least on keys player singing harmony too, Simon Phillips doing a great job on drums too, remember seeing him play with The Who in 1989. Steve Lukather ( as with Phillips and East) played on literally 10000s of singles and albums, including Micheal Jacksons biggest hits, as did future Toto Keys player the great Greg Philligaines)
Simon Phillips is freaking awesome
Nathan East adds a lot of wonderful high harmonies on a lot of live Eric Clapton songs, too.
I heard Nathan with Clapton and his harmonies are great.
I have never seen you dance before, Beth ! Awesome 💃
All the best,
MB
My absolute favourite band!!!! They have so many great songs outside of their “famous” ones as well! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for this Beth! One of my favorite songs of all time! 🙌🙏
That was so much fun, seeing your unbridled JOY listening to Rosanna! 👍👍👍
I loved Georgy Porgy and I'll Supply the Love from Toto too, great songs
Listened to a couple of your songs. Well done. Sounds great.
Jeez! I can’t believe this reaction is as good as what Elizabeth does at The charismatic Voice. Wow for Toto, and wow for you!!
Sure. How?
Hi Beth, thank you for your beautiful analyzes of this Toto song, please I want to hear you more analyse Toto songs
Awesome song.. and one of my favorite bands. That sounded incredible live. Africa and I'll Be Over You also amazing songs.
