It’s one of Woodstock’s great numbers.
Backstory is the girl singers missed the connection in to the show. So the guys sang backup.
If you want to hear it live with everyone n filmed much better, see the version from his concert film Mad Dogs and Englishmen!! That film, maybe moreso than Woodstock is the best video document of the real hippie generation.
Also, on the original record Jimmy Page played guitar!

There's a story behind the rasp. Apparently late for a gig and not wanting to let his audience down, Joe chewed through a mountain to cut down the journey time. Some of the gravel from that fateful night remained in his voice. Joe cocker is also unique as he is the only known human to have their soul in their mouth.

This was the theme song to the 1980s abc tv show, "The Wonder Years." Great song that was written and recorded by The Beatles, but Joe also made into an even bigger hit. Joe was close with The Beatles, and covered a few songs by them. Another one was "She came in through the Bathroom window." Joe made that a hit as a cover as well. What a soulful man. Born in England, he was drawn more to soul and R&B music. He left us with
a wonderful catalogue of music for us to enjoy, and remember him by. Joe passed away a few years ago in his mid 70s I believe.

I was 9 years in 1969 when my older brother bought this album, and I sneakily borrowed it to play on my kid record player. I was sold then as much as I am now. Joe Cocker is one of the greatest performers of all time! When watching Joe you not only get to hear his voice, you get to live inside his emotions, and feel the music as he does. Just utterly an unbelievable joy to listen, and watch Joe perform. He's the ultimate musical experience one can have. 💙🤍💜💚🧡

Yes, imagine being in that crowd with 400,000 of you closest friends! Also, he did not invent air guitar but this performance really popularized it.

My brother and I hitchhiked from Indiana to Woodstock I was 16 and he was 17 we both joined the Marine Corps in 1970. He was a helicopter mechanic and I was an Arial Observer (cat killer) in Vietnam, he rotated back to the world without a scratch I was shot down twice.

His original backup singers were lost in traffic, they missed his moment on stage completely, his originally scheduled backup singers have wonderful voices, beautiful voices, they didn't show up! So at the last minute he got a little bit of help from his friends, those guys that are the last minute back up singers they're not even vocalists! and they did a wonderful job if you really listen to it!
    *True magic!*

Great song, and a great reaction. I saw Joe Cocker perform, in my fair city, about 10 years ago, and, according to my wife, he looked like somebody's Grandpa, white hair, three-piece suit, and all. When he started singing, the years peeled away, and it was 1969 all over again, if only just a little bit less frenetic.

My first introduction to this versionnof this song, was as the theme music to The Wonder Years when I was young. I loved the show, and it was in no small part due to that intro. I waited to hear it every week! Just awesome!

It was said that Joe Cocker felt the music so hard, he couldn't stop his body from moving, as if it was playing every instrument at the same time.......By all accounts, this amazing man, was the most gentle person you could ever meet, and wore his soul like a blanket, for all of us to see ****RIP GREAT ONE**** ❣❣❣

One of the greatest performances ever. He was affiliated with the Beatles. Brings me back to Woodstock, great late 60s music. Janis Joplin was similar, gave it her all. U have good musical taste, keep up the good work
