Just a note to point out to those that might not know when watching this video.... If your cab is 8ohm you won't get the full 170 watts of power, only like 85 watts. If you have a 4ohm cab (which is not usually common with guitar cabs but more for bass cabs) then you will get the full 170 watts. It's silly that the 170 unit wasn't made optimally for an 8ohm cab, which is the most common of guitar cabs.
My band uses the 700 to power our Axe Fx 2’s for both my guitarist & I Works great! We have the same patches in both of our modelers & we can control the EQ on both of them using just the 700. Need more bass in the venue you’re at? No problem just turn the knobs and it effects both of our tone without us having to change our patch on the fly. 1 power amp to power both amps is nice saves room in the rack, we also use the XLR outputs & send those with the cab sim on (amazing feature) to our X32 :) Powerstage 700 is for sure a 10/10

Just got the 200. Well, bought online yesterday so have to wait for it's arrival. Was looking at these dang small amps all day. Almost went with the 170 but read a review that it couldn't keep up with a drummer at 8 ohm so went with the 200. Then read a review on that saying the same thing 🤣 then read another review on the 200 saying 16 ohm is plenty loud enough for a band. So I don't know wth is up. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Great video!! Thanks 😁
@@joshwalker8824 It got so close. Sounded amazing and the tone controls are a major plus. I see a few videos on YT with people insisting this small amp, and that small amp will keep up with a band. I guess these people are playing at very conservative volume levels because my experience was completely different and they will NOT keep up with a band. Unfortunately I had the same experience with the Powerstage 200. We play pretty loud but imo nothing outrageous. I only turn my amp up loud enough to blend with the drummer so I can hear things mixed evenly. And no mics or anything at practice. As soon as I got loud enough to hear good it started clipping. Tried tweaking a few things, t but couldn't get it to stop clipping so had the let it go . I think if I would have had my cabs wired at 4 ohm it would have been loud enough. But 8 ohms just didn't quite cut it, at least without clipping 😣
@@joshwalker8824 I was just looking at the 700 after I made that last comment. I don't know why but thought it was bigger so I passed on that due to wanting something loud but also as small as possible but have found nothing in that category that at least that works for me. But that 700 I'm sure would be perfect as far as volume. Judging how close the 200 got I have no doubts the 700 would be more than enough. These are super clean amps and sound great regardless of what volume you play at so I would definitely say heck yeah! You can turn these down to a whisper and they still sound fantastic! I would have went for the 700 but it would defeat the purpose that I'm trying to accomplish. Was hoping for a super small compact amp loud enough for a back up at a live gig in case my tube amp ever fails live. I have a backup tube amp but I ain't lugging two 100 watt Marshall tube amps around unless we're playing some serious gigs
@@emach07 right on. I've had my eye on the 200, but might pull the trigger on 700 if I know it'll get quiet enough, lol. I'm sure it's more than loud enough. Thanks for the insight.
While the fan on my PS 170 does make some noise I don't find it to be loud at all, and not the way you're describing it. There could be something going on with the fan on your particular unit?
Definitely powerful enough especially if you use the PS-700. But I've used the 200 before in a live setting with a 4x10 bass cab and it was plenty for my needs.
Why would you do that? A frfr speaker is for a modeler with the cabsim/ IR ON and have that signal path amplified as natural as possible. The seymour duncan power amp is to play with your real cab, so yes you can use it with your headrush if you enable your cab sim/ IR.
Lol your FRFR has an amp in it already and no way to connect to the speaker.. the inputs on those go to a preamp. Try plugging the speaker out of your guitar head into a mixer one day.. let us know how that goes..
From what I gather, not by itself. But Radial makes a cablink for amps without multiple outs. As far as the different size cabs, I would think it would be fine as long as the impedance is okay?
Hi all, i have a bit confusion regarding the cab used with the ps unit. They give the wattage per 4watts. I am considering to use this with a tonex and 2x12" 60 Watts each 16 ohm cabinet. That's 120 watts total in speakers. Resistance lowers wattage to a 4th... so around 43 to 50 W. Is that an issue? Coming from a 100 W tube amp world.
The only reason to go for the 700 is the ability to run 1 channel with a cab sim to front of house and one channel without a cab sim to your stage cabs. If you don't run that exact scenario then you are better served with either the 170 or 200. Shame that one feature makes the 700 cost almost double that of the 170 because I have never once felt the need for the extra power even playing stages.
Oh my god!!! How can the powerstage 700 have 700W? Below the power plug there are 270W marked!!! Is this some sort of scam??? 270W in >>> 700W out >> Perpetuum mobile????
270w.. INPUT at 110v. The voltage measured on the speaker output on these is max like 35-40v as it relies more on current than voltage to produce wattage at the speaker. Do the math.. it scales perfectly.
Yo i'm a bass player using hx stomp, would these be good for me? Im planning to run through a 2x12" 4Ohms 1000 Watt cabinet darkglass Not sure which one of these power amp should i get..any help?
I've used both the 200 and the 700 for bass before. The 700 works best as I feel it offers the most headroom and power for bass tone but the 200 did work very well too. I've used the HX Stomp with it as well, however not for bass (I play guitar and bass regularly in various gigs) and the Stomp pairs up with it perfectly for me. Hope this helps, cheers!
You don’t need an effects loop because an effects loop just puts the effects between the preamp and the power amp, which you can do by just putting the preamp before the effects you would put in the loop and then into the power amp

Cab sim has to be turn ON as you don't have what speaker would you like to hear together with your amp sim.
Can I please get an opinion from either you or someone using a similar setup please???
I'm running a HX Stomp XL into a Powerstage 170 into a cab. I'm loving it at the moment, just wondering what I should set my Outputs to and why? Line level or instrument level? It's set to instrument level now, I haven't touched it. I seem to have gotten good results during rehearsals and gigs, but am I using it wrong in any way like this or does it matter? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🤟😁
Amazing!
85watts through a 2x12 or 4x12 will be more then enough over 100db
So if you have a guitar effects modeler, you just plug it into this, and run it straight to whichever cabinet you have
Anybody have any experience using the 700 for 2 guitarists on stage using either 2 modelers or 2 rigs in 1 modeler?
My band uses the 700 to power our Axe Fx 2’s for both my guitarist & I
Works great! We have the same patches in both of our modelers & we can control the EQ on both of them using just the 700. Need more bass in the venue you’re at? No problem just turn the knobs and it effects both of our tone without us having to change our patch on the fly.
1 power amp to power both amps is nice saves room in the rack, we also use the XLR outputs & send those with the cab sim on (amazing feature) to our X32 :)
Powerstage 700 is for sure a 10/10
@@ChristopherRoupp wonderful! Thanks for the share. We run both guitars in one helix patch with lanes so it would work exactly like your setup. How are the cab Sims for items? They sound good or they do the job but aren't as good as an IR?
@@DanCapeau the built in cab sims on the 700 sounds pretty good to me. They’re just for our IEM setup so it doesn’t really have to be the best IR in the world you know? I ran them through our own PA speakers & they sounded solid to me
@@ChristopherRoupp so the stereo outputs can be run as two separate mono signals instead of just one L + R ? I want to use one input for guitar amp and one input for sample player, and use it to power 2 cabs
I have two marshall 4x10 cabs with jensen alnico speakers which I love. I used to run a stereo setup which I really liked. But I also love my modeling software which I use with studio monitors. I prefer not to destroy my monitors so want to use the modelling software with my cabs with cab sim off. Is the PS 700 the best choice? Or are there good alternatives?
I read on SD’s website that the Powerstage 170 has automatic impedance matching for cabs. Would the volume output still drop for a 16 ohm cab?
Yes, to approximately 40W
Just got the 200. Well, bought online yesterday so have to wait for it's arrival. Was looking at these dang small amps all day. Almost went with the 170 but read a review that it couldn't keep up with a drummer at 8 ohm so went with the 200. Then read a review on that saying the same thing 🤣 then read another review on the 200 saying 16 ohm is plenty loud enough for a band. So I don't know wth is up. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Great video!! Thanks 😁
What did you think? Surely 200 is loud enough?
@@emach07 I wonder if the 700 can be turned down low enough then. Or if it would be like trying keep a 120 watt tube amp down at practice space.
My Power Stage 170 has really loud cooling fan and it is on all the time. Its way louder than my computer fan or Axe-Fx II. Is this normal?
While the fan on my PS 170 does make some noise I don't find it to be loud at all, and not the way you're describing it. There could be something going on with the fan on your particular unit?
@@nvmbrsdoom5 Yeah there was a faulty fan. I returned it.
How does it compare with the Matrix gt 1000 fx...sound wise (power is different, I know).
What I'm confused about it why would you need a eq on the powerstage if the fx unit can do the same?
If the cab you’re going into sounds a certain way you can EQ the power amp so that everything coming off the modeler sounds better
@@treyxaviermusic ah ok, thanks for the reply! Going to be buying one soon
would they be powerful enough to run bass speakers?
Definitely powerful enough especially if you use the PS-700. But I've used the 200 before in a live setting with a 4x10 bass cab and it was plenty for my needs.

I got the 170 coming in next week so I can use my master effects super400 with it
Very good comparison. I wish the 170 came with a headphone jack.
(For some reason you make me think of Will Ferrell, respectfully.)
Can you plug this into a headrush frfr speaker? Or is this better with a real cab
That Kiesel’s pickups sound so sterile
my 412 is 750W 2-225W commonwealths 2-150 121s eminence
Can you full stack with the power stage 200? Or say run 4x12 and a 2x12 at the same time?
From what I gather, not by itself. But Radial makes a cablink for amps without multiple outs.
As far as the different size cabs, I would think it would be fine as long as the impedance is okay?
Neighbours? What neighbours? California burned down. You are literally THE ONLY person still in California.
The crate power block is better...they never should have stopped making them
You still can find one of this pricey tho.! Might as well get one of the options here on this video
So is the 200 a true 200 watts and do tube preamps work well with these
Hi all, i have a bit confusion regarding the cab used with the ps unit.
So I can see at 0:55 You used a full amp in your pod go instead of a preamp. Is there a reason ?
Sounds better. Don't crank your amp channel master.
Sup Trey
The only reason to go for the 700 is the ability to run 1 channel with a cab sim to front of house and one channel without a cab sim to your stage cabs. If you don't run that exact scenario then you are better served with either the 170 or 200. Shame that one feature makes the 700 cost almost double that of the 170 because I have never once felt the need for the extra power even playing stages.
Or if you’re running stereo, because the 170 and 200 are mono only.
@@JeffBee1exactly
all of the above for a WDW set up ?? IDK maybe just 3 200's
Oh my god!!! How can the powerstage 700 have 700W? Below the power plug there
are 270W marked!!! Is this some sort of scam??? 270W in >>>
700W out >> Perpetuum mobile????
270w.. INPUT at 110v. The voltage measured on the speaker output on these is max like 35-40v as it relies more on current than voltage to produce wattage at the speaker. Do the math.. it scales perfectly.
So if I’ve me an old Rocktron Velocity 100 not doing anything then I can use it to push my Zoom G6?
"front of house" hahahahawhahahahahahahahahahahah

Would the 200 drive 2 16ohm marshal 4x12's?
Hey is there a power amp with to speaker inputs ...for full stack
Does anyone know if the Powerstage 700 is usable for bass guitar too?
It is totally
Yes. Not a ton of volume for bass IMO but it definitely works.
Are you jamming hava nagila?
does the 700 come with rack ears?
Live today?
30 minutes!
700=pro and bass players.
Yo i'm a bass player using hx stomp, would these be good for me? Im planning to run through a 2x12" 4Ohms 1000 Watt cabinet darkglass
Not sure which one of these power amp should i get..any help?
I've used both the 200 and the 700 for bass before. The 700 works best as I feel it offers the most headroom and power for bass tone but the 200 did work very well too. I've used the HX Stomp with it as well, however not for bass (I play guitar and bass regularly in various gigs) and the Stomp pairs up with it perfectly for me. Hope this helps, cheers!
@@nvmbrsdoom5 wow thank you for the answer dude!i'll do my tries cheers
that’s one of the worst cab sims i’ve ever heard
NO EFFECTS LOOP
You don’t need an effects loop because an effects loop just puts the effects between the preamp and the power amp, which you can do by just putting the preamp before the effects you would put in the loop and then into the power amp
