Above the base model exists the 1.5L turbo sedan and coupe but for those that need more shove there's also the new 2017 Civic Sport Hatchback which gets a power bump and a manual transmission making it faster than the last Civic Si. Of course there will also be a new Civic Si very shortly and a Civic Type R if you have a need for speed.

I know a lot of people think the 2017 civic looks ugly. I however, love it. The only other civics I like are the 8th Gen Civics.

I'm 42 and I really love this car. Aggressive non-bland styling, great performance, good mpg, decent pricing without crazy options to pick from and previous Civic reliability. And because I'm a home mechanic parts and web knowledge will be plentiful. You'll be surprised how many fixes I've encountered on UA-cam/web due to others having similar issues.
I will have to do research on the 2018 Elantra GT but I trust the Civic a little more here.
Most excellent review as always! I purchased a Sport Touring in red last week and absolutely love it. Red was not my first choice, but it really looks good. In fact, the car looks FAR better in person than in pictures and videos. Something in the look does not properly "translate" to 2 dimensions, I guess. This hatchback has "polarizing" styling, for sure (as evidenced by many of the comments here), but I like it. Exterior styling was not the main reason for my purchase, nor has it ever been when I have purchased a car. It is a factor, of course, but some of the comments here are surprising. If you are seriously interested in purchasing and are on the fence about the styling, I'd advise to take a look at one in person if you have not.
I did exhaustive research prior to buying, and found that the combination of tech and safety features, comfort, MPG, and fit and finish actually made the choice fairly easy. I do find a few small things annoying- like the lack of a volume knob on the stereo, and the absence of a dedicated physical fan speed control on the Climate Control, but these are most certainly not deal breakers. One point I also wanted to mention- the Sport Touring has the best sounding audio system in anything I have heard short of the Mark Levinson system in some Lexus models. For a stock system, it is really nice. This is very important to me as it is nearly impossible to replace audio head units today, due to the integration of all the other control features in these units. Note that the audio in the Sport reviewed here and other lower-end models is not nearly as good.
What truly compelled me to buy this over the coupe or sedan was the utility. The hatchback simply is more versatile in terms of potential hauling capability. I often have to cart fairly large items around, and this just fits the bill. Also, the 18" rims with the wider, low profile tires factored in. This thing just HANDLES, as Alex mentions in the review. The CVT was a pleasant surprise to me, as I had never driven one. It is not as fun as a manual transmission, but I can live with it and it is not annoying to me in any way, as I was worried it would be. Just feels like a good automatic, as long as you don't over analyze it.
I have not owned a compact car since my very first new car purchase, a 1991 Acura Integra, which was a GREAT vehicle, all around. Sadly, it has been minivans and huge SUVs for a couple of decades, thanks to kids etc. This car compares very favorably to the Integra. Fun to drive, reliable (presumed), fuel efficient, and absolutely loaded with cutting edge features. Even though I have only had the car for a week, I cannot imagine it letting me down any time soon. For a sub $30k vehicle, I am simply thrilled with my purchase.

Bigger is not better, if you want bigger buy the models up the line up.

I had two Honda Accords in the late 80's and early 90's. Those Accords were still bigger than these new Civics. Not by a lot but still bigger.
I as well. My Accord was not as snug and was a couple hundred pound heavier, but with a lot less power. It's handling was not as tight either. I drove a F.I.T. and it seemed like a tin can compared to my older Accord. I still would have bought it, had the dealer priced it fairly. However, he said he had to price it close to a new car due to the rare color and manual trans. Never mind that it had been wrecked.
Yeah the Fit does seem too tinny for me as well. I'm going to have to get something used in the next 2-3 years to replace my 06 xB. A 12-15 xB is an option, as is a used Lexus ES350, 9th/10th Gen Civics, that's about all I can think of.
For the past three days, I have been looking around to find the right car that has reliability, performance, and good gas mileage. I checked the Mazda 3, it didn't run smooth, and it wasn't spacious. Today, I decided to buy a Honda Civic hatchback. When I took it out for a test drive, the Civic was more smooth and performed well than Mazda 3.
is it the 165 hp and 2.0L engine mazda or?
and how fast is the honda civic? because this is one of the only videos who saying 6.5 accelaration which most of the videos say 7.0-8.2.
Great review. As a new owner of this car (in touring trim), I agree with all your review points. Really the main noticeable differences between this car and a focus st or gti will be the steering turn in and body roll; and of course torque. Beyond that, this car is very close, and nearly as quick. That is very interesting, being that this car is not designed to compete with the gti or focus st.
Your comparison summary is so awesome and useful. I am deciding between the Mazda 3 and Civic Hatchback. Leaning toward the Civic now with he better acceleration, larger cargo, and better mpg.

Great review, Alex! Personally, I really like the styling of the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback. Honda definitely stepped outside of the box with the styling of this generation Civic hatchback. It offers a very aggressively bold, and sleek exterior styling! I actually conducted my full in-depth review of one of these Civic Hatchbacks a few months, too! It actually surprised me quite a bit! I really like Honda's Brake Hold, it's rear cargo cover and it's very practical center console, and fairly comfortable/practical front/rear seats. Keep up the great work, Alex! 👍

A little critique and pet peeve of mine: when you're out on the road test segments, I get anxious when you look toward the cabin camera while driving. I'd rather you just keep your eyes on the road and keep talking that way.

17:40 correction. You can get Honda Sensing on the EX and EX-L. It's a $1000 option and worth twice that for the adaptive cruise alone. Probably have to special order because Honda is stupidly putting very few of these on dealers' lots. Once you've had these features you'll never want to be without them. They'll be standard on all models in a very few years.

Personally I think the Civic Sport hatch is a lot more intriguing than a regular Golf TSI. It has more power, more reliable and oddly enough, actually attractive, especially in the metallic blue I saw once on the freeway.
As a sidenote, I think the Golf GTI still beats the Civic Si, but personally I like the Civic Type R over the Golf R.

One thing that I haven't seen many folks cover is the turning circle. It's not such a big deal in suburban California with roads that nicely accommodate and encourage U-turns, but in an older urban environment, I definitely want something better than my old Accord's 20.1' radius to manage some tight city driving, where 3 point turns in traffic can be dangerous. I can easily look this info up, but thought I'd mention it since you give the most detail in your reviews than anyone I've seen. :) It's not always intuitive either.. like it's bizarre (and sad) to me that the civic has a somewhat larger circle than the Kia Sportage. Maybe Honda just doesn't do tight circles in general.
Thanks for pointing out the spare tire. Please do that in all of your reviews. Sometimes you skip it. Also, you failed to mention the "trick" privacy screen in the boot. I don't think I've ever seen such a design (going back to early 1970s hatchbacks) that gets completely out of the way when not in use. Kudos to Honda.
Agreed. It was a rare omission by Sir Alex. On top of that he failed to note the existence of the Civic Tourer (wagon).
Right Lane Hog, this is a review of a US-spec car, so naturally he's only comparing it to other cars that are available in the US. We don't get the Civic wagon here.

excellent in depth review of what I think is an excellent car. I love the out of the box styling, love it or hate it, it's different and refreshingly original. We've traded our 2012 9th gen hatch on an RS (US Sports Touring) in Sonic Grey Pearl, can't wait for pick up next month.
The styling front and rear is quite aggressive, as you suggested, Alex.

How would you compare it to the regular vw golf? I think its a little faster and the golf is less reliable

Impressively detailed review- Alex is a machine.
In Canada, our LX Hatchbacks come standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and the 7" infotainment screen. Also, all trim levels of the Hatchback are available with a manual transmission. Oh, all trims have Honda Sensing too, at least in the 2019 model year. (The manual transmission models don't have Low Speed Follow though.)
DrewTwoFish, Canadian models are always optioned better and for no more money. I guess their product planners are better.
The base version of the Golf GTI has a street price around $23,000. It's a much better deal than any Civic. The new Civic do have a more modern design, so if that's important to you, get the Civic, otherwise the Golf GTI is a faster & better car.

The constant comparisons to the GTi confound me. The natural competitor to the new Honda Civic Hatchback is a regular Golf 1.8T and NOT a GTi. As was mentioned numerous times, the GTi is faster, better equipped and more expensive therefore it's Honda competitor will obviously be the Civic Si, which is going to be faster, better equipped and more expensive. The Civic R is therefore a competitor to the Golf R (they even used the same letter so it would be easy to compare).
In conclusion:
1) Honda Civic Hatchback vs VW Golf 1.8T.
2) Honda Civic Si vs. VW Golf GTi.
3) Honda Civic R vs. VW Golf R.
One additional note: compare the trim levels of the Honda Civic Hatchback to the VW Golf 1.8T. They are almost identically equipped AND priced.
Good point. If I remember right the 1.8T Golf comes with a 5-speed manual, which is a bit strange in 2017.
Based on the numbers, on paper that's true. But taking all things into account, the civic hatchback is superior to the regular Golf, and so much better than its pure numbers indicate, that its actually a little closer to the GTI. Civic SI numbers are lower than the GTI numbers, but may end up being a superior car when taking all things into account. Especially when taking into account price, cost of ownership, reliability, etc.

Not a bad review. But B- for the manual economy? I got 39.6 MPG traveling from Phoenix to Santa Barbara, including stop and go traffic through LA.
These seem really nice, but I do worry about the long term reliability on the turbo engines.
On one hand, I know Honda wouldn't dare mess up the reliability of their bread and butter cars, but on the other, well, turbochargers DO wear out, and they generally do so more quickly than a good engine or transmission will. They're pricey to replace, as well, and the boost can cause long term durability issues.
Like the styling more than the MAZDA nose job. Mazda gives you trick colors. Honda doesn't need em to be an
eyecatcher.
Alex, I think you overstate the rear headroom of the Civic hatch. I found this car to be another example of the form-over-function trend that sacrifices practical rear headroom for fashionable 'swoopiness'.
This is definitely a desirable car now and down the time road! 😊

Honda joining the cost cutting crowd, using the electronic parking brake, not only something else to fail, but when it does it is a huge issue and might require a tow to a shop. PLEASE BRING BACK THE GOOD OLD RELIABLE AND USABLE MANUAL E-BRAKE!

ppl on youtube says it's ugly but it still sells，ppl on youtube says u can be called a driver only if u drive a manual but big data shows nobody is buying a manual nowadays, same thing. I own a 17 hatch sport in black, but in Canada, we get all other features from sport touring other than leather seats, 12 speaker audio system, led head lights, heated back seats, head up display and navi. Basically, i love it much better than the mazda 3 i previously owned, rides much faster, much better tech equipments and better fuel econemy. However, those hatches were all made from Britain and they had quality control issues. Not only me, but a lot of civic hatch onwers experienced rattling, buzzing here and there. For instance rattling inside A pillar. Luckily it is not constant, for me it was like once for every 2~3 months. Other than that, I really hope that led head and tail lights come standard on all trim levels. At last, black color with black 18 inch wheels makes this car so sharp and stealth in the night. If you are getting a sport touring, get black or that exclusive sonic grey pearl which is my second favourite color.
btw i can throw a 2 meter long table top in this car and drive away with no issue.

Another excellent review. Thanks Alex. On the rear styling - I think it's a little to 'busy.' The Civic styling is a real departure from Honda's usually quite conservative lines.

That is because black helps hides some of the lines and 'over styling'. I like that car, but the styling I think was better on the prior gen.

i have the touring.. owned for 1 month.. only negative comment is touch screen is glitchy and low profile tires are poor on roigh roads like we see in northern Ontario.. otherwise 100% satisfied
How is the road noise at 70 or 75 mph (120 kph)?
to be honest i dont really notice the road noise.... of course there is some but versus the other Hondas i own its not an issue

'18 Sport Touring 6MT here, in the Greater Toronto Area. The car handles beautifully, and for the winter, I replace the ContiContacts 235/40-18s with Blizzaks 215/55-16s on steelies. Also 100% satisfied, especially coming from a troublesome and rusting 2012 Mazda5 (I also have a 2008 Accord Coupe 5MT. 225 000km. 11+ years and still not a penny in repairs. Only maintenance and wear items)

Everybody want's to review the Si or the Sport. I would gladly give up the horsepower not to have to buy premium fuel. According to your numbers the 6 speed manual with the extra 6 HP only gets to sixty about a tenth of a second faster than the EX with the CVT. I love manual transmissions too but it's hard to justify the extra fuel cost. Why do automakers have to pigeon hole consumers into these ridiculous choices?

It will be an interesting matchup against the upcoming Elantra GT. Honda has brand name popularity, but Elantra has wagon practicality vs. Honda's liftback. Elantra will also likely run on regular gas.
Forgive my clarification but Hyundai actually makes a real Elantra wagon in Europe called the i30 .
Yes, I actually own one. It was briefly sold in the US, model 2010. Well, to be precise, wife drives it. I hope Elantra returns to the same style but improves on suspension, seats, and a few other things.
Elantra Touring? They sold very well up here in the Peoples' Republic of Canuckistan until Hyundai withdrew them from our market.
Yes, that's the one. The same thing happened here in the Kalifornia People's Republik. One thing that annoyed me was that Hyundai would only sell stick shift with the rock bottom trim, and would not even allow me to upgrade seats to the "Popular Option Package #2". Without it, I can tell you that seats are crappy, and with my spine, it is no joy. If Hyundai does that again, I won't buy it. There was no reason for it other than dumb marketing games, and I will not let them offend my intelligence (and my back) again. This is particularly annoying because before that I had a stick shift Kia with excellent seats.
FYI Wagons never went out of style in the Land Of Maple Syrup Pipelines and Pet Polar Bears. Due to the fact you Yankee Imperialists hate wagons so much we lost them too. How popular are wagons here? I have a neighbour ( our spelling) with two Elantra Tourings parked in the double garage of their $500,000 home. That is something you would probably never see Stateside. BTW I have no idea if their seats are comfortable.
I really like the civic type r but I can't really afford it so this sport is the next best option it's a hatchback like the type r and still makes plenty of power and comes in manual so idk baby type r???

The key here is .... lighter! It's about 300lbs lighter than a gti! I have owned 3 gtis and now the lease is up on my 2016 golf r... I would have never in a million years considered this civic sport..until I test drove it.. crazy the steering feel has so much feedback and car just feels light! And flingabull.. hey it's pretty dran good lol .. who knew lol good work honda .. feels like my 98!honda prelude lol! Oh couldn't honda bring a new one back? lol maybe?? Shhhhh!

WOW, Gorgeous car a great balance between style, performance and gas mileage. The fact that so many braindead sheople with their no style, boxy and boring SUVs and cars don't like this car makes it even more attractive. Plus since it's not a ford or chevy it won't fall apart a week after you buy it.
Don Myers civic is no longer recommended by consumer reports due to reliability issues, but your old and think its 1995 still

I like the Civic Hatchback's styling, it looks very sharp in gray. However, limiting the manual to the bottom 2 trims kills it for me. Heated seats and some type of navigation would vastly improve its comfort in winter and long trips.
Kamaka Chang same here, I would even get the top trim if it came with anything, but a CVT.
Manual would be the way to go or even a DCT.
If Honda at least offered the better radio with Apple Carplay and Android Auto it'd make it much more competitive. Maybe it'll trickle down in the next mid-cycle refresh.

I agree, if you want a Civic Hatch and manual you can choose between 2 base trims and then nothing until the Type R. I know I should be grateful Honda's selling the Hatchback at all but there are a lot of other good choices Focus ST, Forte5, Golf/GTI, & Mazda3 to name a few.
Put shifter in Sport position and use paddle shifters seven positions for manual operation.

W Scott I don't think it's the case in the US, people don't really buy manual cars and Honda dealership doesn't want to sit on top trim models that won't sell. As far as SI, hatchback won't be making its way here.

The SI hatch will not be making it here. So a manual hatch with the more options, and quicker than the previous gen SI might be nice. Especially since you can tune it for a bit more power and get the hatch that they will not bring here in the SI. My original comment is sounding better, thanks...

Wish they'd do the Accord as a wagon again or with a hatch or even a lift-back. All those small trunk openings on the current sedans really grind my gears. I know they think everyone will just buy an SUV or Crossover or something but that's not what I want.
I wish Kia would bring their Optima Wagon to the US.
CRV, Pilot and MDX are designed for the customer who wants a large cargo bay. You are right that some (like me!) would prefer an Accord wagon or TLX wagon (especially with a V6 with manual trans!)... sadly it's not the best selling configuration anymore, I guess.
Excellent review Alex. Generally I'm not a fan of Honda's recent edgy exterior styling philosophy, but the civic hatch is tolerable and actually eye catching given the right angle. They're bound to sell bucket loads. Cannot believe the HP out of these new compact cars. Simply excessive really. Most drivers will just tend to drive hard and get shitty mileage. Just think the gas mileage possible with a more sensible 130-140 hp and a smaller displacement turbo engine. Fuel economy gains always get overshadowed by the ability to add HP.
I get a fuel economy of 5.8-6.3 L/100km (37-41mpg) on average with a Sport Touring 6MT. A bit thirstier in the winter, maybe 1-2mpg less.

How is the sound quality of the base audio system compared with the EX audio system? It would be very cool to see a frequency response measured from the driver's head position as an objective way to demonstrate audio performance.
Funny that he says it’s styled for the European market. Here in Europe it’s known for being styled for the US market. So much so that Honda’s sales have cratered in Europe since its introduction.
Are there any aftermarket parts to get rid of those terrible looking fake air vents? Would be a decent looking car without those. Oh and that exhaust.
