My grandson was getting married and it was a FORMAL dress occasion. I bought a pant suit with sequins on the top and thought “I will never wear this again!” I finally returned it and bought a satin blouse which I wore with black dress pants and black heals and felt very comfortable in this outfit. And I will definitely wear that outfit again to a nice dinner or party.

It’s funny because people think that oh I can’t wear that I wore that to the last party. Really nobody remembers what you wore unless it was just really outstanding. I realize this year‘s ago. I have a simple V-neck longsleeve velvet burgundy dress that I like to wear at Christmas. I’ve had it for at least 10 years. It still looks great and it’s beautiful simple and classic. Nobody remembers it but I’ve got several photos of me in that same dress.

on a slightly related note: you mentioned (very accurately imo) that donating should always be the last option, and that got me thinking about discarding items. I see quite a lot of people being quite flippant about "just donating" it as a sustainable way to purge, even though most donated clothes end up in landfill, and I slightly struggle with guilt when letting things go because of this.
I'd love to see a video on ideas on how to sustainably deal with the items you want to let go?

There are lots of options. If it's kids clothes a lot of daycares will accept used clothing for kids who have accidents. For adults, you have consignment, Poshmark, you can donate to a women's shelter or sometimes hospitals will take them for patients that may need support (the mental hospital in our city accepts clothing and creates a free shop for patients to go and get some clean "new" clothes).. you can do a clothing swap with neighbors... Lots of options

I rehome stuff to specific people. I gave a basket full of assorted items: dresses tops and sweaters to a young mom who hasn’t got a lot of excess money. She was delighted and I picked out stuff I thought she would wear. I used to take my stuff to work and my colleagues would choose anything they wanted. I don’t just landfill it or give it to places that will throw it away. I also make sure that the things I rehome are in good repair. I don’t mind seeing my clothes on others and I do lend items for occasions or travel. I have a dress that has been everywhere!

I love your message that the classics should be YOUR classics. The traditional list of classic items and cuts is NOT my style. But some pieces can work if I choose carefully: for instance, I will hardly ever choose to wear a blazer if it doesn't have stretch. Even a jacket or coat must allow ease of movement. I've had to relinquish many blazers over the years because they were too stiff or cut wrong.
Knowing what feels best on my body is so empowering. 😊

I had a wedding to go to recently and struggled to find something to wear. It seemed ridiculous to spend a large amount on one outfit I didn’t really like and would never wear again. I had the same inspiration to invest in separates I would wear again. I went to the wedding in a skirt I already owned and an elevated but simple top I can wear with multiple options. I felt great at the wedding as the outfit was really me! I had a lot of compliments too :)

Hey Alyssa, so I still haven't figured out my three words. I was watching another UA-cam video, I can't remember who it was some random one, but something fun that I've been doing is, instead of thinking of your three words when you're getting dressed. You stand in front of your closet and you say to yourself. How do I want to feel today?
Say you want to say cozy and casual or casual and classy or funky and fresh lol then you pick pieces, that reflect those two things and put them together.
It's been so fun to experiment with! You should give it a try!

This was fun, thank you. My problem (not really) is I have these fantasy images of myself when I travel (i.e. Greece? A long billowy dramatic dress for a photo. Mexico? Beige and bright colours shorts and tops and hats i don't wear at home...). Quite often they don't translate well when I get back home and barely wear them again... OR (2) I think I'm clever with a small travel wardrobe but when i get there the atmosphere or weather is different than i expected and i only have a couple of things that are "appropriate" and i have to "make do" (maybe shop there, which is fun too) when I expected that i killed it (ouch, my poor ego). 😄

Your point about finding the classic closet essentials that work for you hit home so hard. No matter how much I’ve tried, blazers never felt comfortable to me - on my body or style wise. Cardigans filled that ‘outer layer’ gap blazers vacated, matching my three words before I defined them. Not to feed into the stereotype, but this librarian loves a cosy cardigan. It feels the energy of each piece matches mine.

The occasion wear and classic pieces are the things that get me. They often don't fit my style and it's taken me a while to learn to filter it through my own style and find "my" own twist on a piece. For instance, I really don't do white trainers or jeans, but somehow grey trainers or jeans feel just fine.

@That Girl Netty The character Scarlett O'Hara in classic movie 'Gone With The Wind'. The description of turning curtain fabric into a gown was far more creative and fun in the book. Poor darlings only had best clothes - nothing to ride bikes or horse around in.

Another great video, Alyssa! Good to hear you say once again that donating should be a final option. Not only does a huge percentage end up in landfill, but a significant amount ends up being burned in third world countries with the toxic smoke from synthetic fabrics causing health problems in the local population. So donate as a last resort, and then only donate good quality, saleable items. Clara 💕

My classic piece I purchased that everyone says is a must have, including your chanel, is a button down shirt. I hate them. I find them uncomfortable. Yet, I bought several thinking "this time it'll be more comfortable and I will wear it." Nope. The shirts hang in my closet and I never wear them. I have finally given myself permission to dislike the classic button down and I don't care who says I have to have one. I feel the same about black clothing. I don't like wearing black. At all. Yet, everywhere it's you must/should have black trousers, black jeans, black tee, black sweater, black blazer, etc. You are told black is timeless and classy and looks good on everyone. Well, again I have accepted that I do not like black. I will no longer buy black clothes.
I'm gonna forgo the button down and the color black for my beloved knitwear and all the lovely navy, browns, and greys.

😖 Yes, there's a lot of peer pressure out there to conform to a rather ➡️narrow⬅️ definition of what constitutes classic & timeless. 😊It can take some of us a lifetime trying to figure out what suits our body shape, temperament, & lifestyle too.
🥰 I'd love to wear all the blazers I bought for the office outside, but I can't bear 'em until temps finally drop🌡below 70° in our perpetually 🌞 sunny skies. Otherwise, I will roast🥵. It's the same w/most knits. I prefer a lighter soft jersey cotton, esp. that has some give in the fabric to form around my curves.
⏳️With an hourglass figure, I usually have to ⬆️size up⬆️ on button downs to fit ➡️bust⬅️ w/o bulging. As a result, I'm usually left with all this ⬅️excess➡️ fabric around my middle. Trust me, it's not a good look on anyone😖.
I only own a handful of silky, tailored button down tops that drape nicely that remain in rotation. 😉Although I also have two solid & two plaid formal men's dress shirts handed down by a friend. I will occasionally wrap or knot 'em over other things when I'm in the mood.
I'm pretty passionate about black〰️& would be heart 💔 broken to move to a place it's thought of as strictly funeral gear ☠️. It can instantly make me feel like a 🌟 million dollars 🌟.
I will occasionally wear camel or khaki on bottom⬇️, but I always need black (or a crisp white) on top⬆️ to bring the drama. I will sometimes sport a deep chocolate 🍫 brown head to toe, but anything in the beige or off-white color family drains all life from my face🤣.

🔨 You nailed it with your comprehensive list of challenges, & how they can make your overall wardobe disjointed. 🤗 Probably spent a lifetime focused on Occasion Dressing. 🤔Maybe not exclusively for 💲expensive special social outings as you've detailed here, but def sourced outfits with precise activities in mind. Clothing specifically ear marked for corporate work, dates, church, casual play, lounging, sport, etc.
Know my closet still doesn't have 💯% cohesion, but it's improving thanks to fashion influencers like yourself who are helping me refine my overall style. Training me how to maximize cost per wear by mixing high/low pieces from my different categories in more creative ways. Choosing clothing that will serve a wider variety of purposes.
😉Never more appreciative to have had extra space to store clothing. Always found that seasonal rotation is a smart way to freshen my closet. ⏳️Plus, as an hourglass, it's been tricky to find clothing that fits my extreme proportions w/o add'l tailoring. So I often bought duplicates in different colors. Having fluctuated ⬆️up & down⬇️ in weight later in life, I've never been so grateful to have retained both smaller & larger sized clothing. It allowed me to shop my closet, esp. helpful in financially lean times too.
😁Truly thankful to have found style tricks to reduce larger items when needed too. I wouldn't deliberately shop oversized, but I don't mind them. Once I feel confident about my weight stability & maintenance, I'll either get some of the higher quality things tailored or pass them on.

I use My Closet. I find it useful to record outfits that work well, and outfits that work in theory, but not when I put them on. Also, by recording outfits worn in the calendar I can see which I really wear, and remind myself to try other combinations. I keep various sections for what is stored, and what I need to review and get rid of. It's easier working visually than doing it on a spreadsheet or paper, just time consuming photographing everything at the beginning.

This was a most excellent video, Alyssa. It makes so much sense to me. Beginning tomorrow, I am taking my special event wear out of my closet and putting it in my guest room closet. I don't need the visual while putting together outfits for my daily rotation. It clutters my mind. And now that you've mentioned it in this video, I cannot undo in my mind. Hahaha. Thanks very much. I appreciate your hard work and these videos.

Classic pieces or trend pieces the internet told us we needed!! Yep, as soon as I heard about skinny jeans way back when...I was like NO WAY, not my style, not on my body! Along the way I bought one pair, which I donated pretty soon after. Now that trend has moved on and I am sure zillions of skinny jeans are being abandoned for wide leg jeans! RIP skinny jean! It is never ending. At least now I have the confidence to say no! BTW is Open Wardrobe a free app?

Alyssa, today's video is excellent as the information you share is so pertinent for me and I'm sure many others who save those "goal weight" clothes. Placing "special event" clothing in a separate location is brilliant. I have so many "hand me overs" that I NEVER wear but feel guilty donating them so ultimately I will be clearing out many items that make my closet chaotic. Thank you so much for the great ideas!

Who would ever expect the Barbie movie to be a costume event? My friend’s special needs daughter asked us to all wear pink, which I *never* wear. Fortunately Salvation Army had a pink polo shirt (a closet staple). Pink artificial daisies stitched to existing white jeans ankles can be removed easily. Target had a pink bag I can see wearing as a color pop with frequently worn clothes. Special occasion meets costume.

It is a very good idea to separate the occasional outfits from every day ones. I store all my clothes in one wardrobe and sometimes got confused with what I really have. I only separate by seasons. I think that storing every day outfits together with megpie pieces as a spice up pieces can be a great game changer.
Thank you Alyssa for sharing your experience with us!

Hello Alyssa, I want to ask you a personal question. If you don’t feel comfortable about then don’t answer because don’t want offend. So, I think your skin is really beautiful and I wonder do you tan? Or is your skin that beautiful color all by itself? Be well and be at peace.

I had to come back to say how much I LOVE the Open Wardrobe app. It has been so fun and inspiring to have my items available digitally in one place where I can "try out" different ideas. The AI outfit suggestions have been really great too, putting together things I wouldn't have necessarily thought of myself but that I ended up liking. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to the app! Love your content and philosophy around slow fashion and personal style.

My body is in a big fluctuation period (had a baby, I hope I'll have more babies) and it's taken my daughter getting to 2 to actually put the smaller clothes away. They might never fit, it doesn't really matter, but having them take up half my wardrobe was madness

I love sequined, beaded, satin, tulle, and formal occasion outfits. They are so pretty and fantasy driven. Unfortunately not even cruise ship travel demands it and at my age and being retired, there’s no wedding but more and more funerals to attend. Even typical dress has no chance debuting. I have to force myself to not buy any even when it’s $10.
