Having a wish list was a game changer for me. I often would add things, and then when I went back to the list weeks or even months later, I would remove 99% of the saved items. My no buy year (was for a month when I started) is going so well, better than I ever dreamed I could possibly achieve. Thank you, Alyssa, for all that you do on your channel's ❤
Your philosophy has really helped me the past few seasons. I’ve bought less, loved what I have, have thought about my style in a new way, and just leave the house feeling better and more confident each day. I used to have no patience for fashion. Now I know my style, I embrace it. Thank you!
I had a fantasy self dress in my closet that went unworn for a year. I gave myself three months to wear it or donate it. Last night I wore it. Not only was it comfortable, I got a few compliments. Now I wish I'd worn it sooner!
When I add a piece from my wishlist, it is nuts how much wear and delight I get from the piece. This is especially illuminating when I compare it to a piece I bought that was impulsive! This is a huge reminder for me why wishlists are critical to having great style.
So happy I came across your channel (I think last fall) You have taught this old (I'm 56) dog some new tricks -- or just even better articulated some wardrobe / closet habits I already do (shop your closet😉) but the best tips by far have been becoming aware of what is bought on repeat (asking self why? discovering "fantasy self") and yes: having a LIST!! I too do this for groceries and even errand day, so why not the closet? This year's list included not an item, but adding the color burgundy (vs red) to my mostly black wardrobe and loving it!! Thanks for your continuing inspiration and diverse POV! ❤
I am 10 months into a no buy year and really seeing the things I want in the moment don't stand. Its been eye-opening. The list will be used from now on...
I’m 4 months in to this no-buy clothes year! It was really difficult for the first month. 😅 Then i told myself if I would buy any clothes, I’ll have to add one more category of no-buying items. Now, I dont buy clothes, bags and sunglasses.
Thank you for another great video, this was so helpful. I always had a list but added the things I thought I should have on it, or just everything I wanted. I never knew how to discover the things that I actually needed. And once again, the answer is to play around in my own closet. I have never really done this seriously before. I am having a 3-month pause in spending on clothes (1 September to 1 December) as I want to break my spending habits, so I will use that time wisely to play around in my closet and really find out what I need, and curate my list 👍👍
Especially when shopping hand / vintage, it is important to have a flexible wishlist, since if not you are limited to things you “know” already when you make the list. For new things, it’s fine, since you can do research better from home than walking around the shops. But when buying vintage/ second hand, you need to let inspiration guide ypu, since you cant always find these things online. So when I make my list, I indeed try to make it about colour, silhouette, style etc… so a long camel colour wintercoat in cashmere or cashmere blend, with a belt or silhouette that allow belting… or a light coloured shirt with big sleves or dramatic cuffs to go under sleveles vests… And also keeping in mind, I think it was from Christina Mychas, the saying “ If it’s not a hell yes, it is a hell no! 😊”
I needed this. I have too much stuff, but have done so much better because of you. I am guilty of buying the same thing over and over and didn’t really think of it until now. I will try each day to do a few minutes of closet shopping. I hope to clear out and know I will find some forgotten gems. See you Saturday
Love all your insights. I've had a "thrift list" on my phone for a while, but using your tips I've fleshed it out a bit and gotten really specific. I've added a likes/dislikes section to the bottom as well. I particularly enjoyed you comments on never achieving a "perfect closet". That's a mindset shift that I'd love to see more discussion on. Thinking of my wardrobe as constantly shifting and changing (and never done) is a new concept for me.
Thanks Alyssa I really appreciated this guidance. Trying not to be creative with my existing wardrobe and decreasing my spending-you’re always my inspiration! 🎉
Thanks Allysa, I love your sense of style and your slow fashion advice! I have drastically reduced my spending and I am having fun shopping my closet and being more creative! Please keep the videos coming!
Thank you! I do find that making a list really helps me not do impulse buying. Taking the clothing inventory and then making a list is a great part of the process
I always keep a list of items I am looking for in my wallet. I'm a big thrift store shopper, so it really helps keep me from getting overwhelmed and/or buying something I don't really need.
This video offers wonderful advice and presented in a thoughtful, kind manner. Thank you! I've learned so much from you and I appreciate your wisdom! I started a list a year or so ago and it rhas eally helped! Learning what my style is and having my 3 go-to-words (from your videos) has also helped and I am buying less and less and enjoying what I wear more.
Thank you for this video Alyssa and for sharing your vision on this topic! I am glad you also incorporated the danger of a wish list for people who like ticking of lists :)
Great video! I love keeping a wishlist that like you said, gives a little hit whenever I add something to it.. even if I end up deleting that item months later. (Then, I get a pat on the back lol).
Excellent, thoughtful video, Alyssa. I'm always amazed when I go back to my wish list and find I've completely gone off something and wonder what the hell I was thinking when I put it on there in the first place. :)
I know what I like and wear... but currently I can't fit into my favourite trousers because I've put on enough weight over the past few months that I've gone up about two dress sizes, which is something I really have to deal with in learning to eat better and exercise (like, at all). So I've found myself shopping more over the summer because I've had money to do so, and have suddenly needed trousers I can actually fit into. It doesn't help that I am pretty compulsive in my shopping habits, though I am doing my best to curb the desire to buy All The Things. I need to do a proper and thorough declutter of the things I don't wear and won't wear even if I lose the weight, and sort through everything else. Wish me luck!
@Teverell I appreciated your post (and you made me laugh!). When you wrote 'pretty compulsive in my shopping habits', I could see myself holding multiple store carry-bags. Such a happy business unloading all that 'loot' from the trunk. And as for sorting through things, you may find the processes of lifting, reaching, unpacking and repacking and trying your clothes on, actually ticks up your heart rate a little 😉 That would be such a Win/Win if you dropped a pound or two in the declutter process. Hope you're pleased with a more streamlined closet, filled with clothes you like and wear.
Your comment about getting clothes from sponsors hit home, if we ask for or receive clothing as gifts for our birthday or the holidays it’s important to remember those items before purchasing
Great info! A list for our clothing with the style we wear a lot. We are constantly evolving in our style, so making changes in that list to suit us at that present moment helps. Love this!
Having a wish list is a helpful tip! I have a feeling I'll be actually buying a lot less. Thank you. Your white blouse is adorable. It looks so good on you.
Thank you for this, Alyssa! I keep a wish list, and it is helpful, but I haven’t been including fun items, so it feels a bit like a duty. I am going to start including a few fun things!
In planned purchases can be that you see something you didn’t know existed and you feel that it would be perfect for you. I do that kind of purchas when I travel. I save up to have money if I find something I really want but would not put on my whishlist.
Like you said in the beginning of the video. I’ve done a grocery list my whole life and really put it into practice these past 10years to not overbuy food items which I do not do anymore. However, it’s strange that with my Wishlist things keep on being put on, it’s an ever growing list😂. I’m terrible with it, for me slow fashion is something I’ve watched from the sidelines for years, always desired to be better, but this is the first year I’m trying to practice what I’ve learnt. And to be honest, it’s been eye opening to actually track my clothes and spending in an app as well. I’ve never done that before. The Wishlist thing is a double edged sword for me. Sometimes it makes me want more things sometimes I delete the entire thing. It’s very difficult!
Love the list idea-I need it. I’ve wanted a slouchy black bag that will fit over my coat for some time - bags are the hardest for me. I purchase to many inferior ones because I don’t feel confident purchasing one I won’t wear. I need to pick one out IN PERSON and feel the weight of it and if it stays on my shoulder. I get too impulsive - I’m going to make a list and a sub list of what the item actually needs to consist of!
I was never a shop just to shop person, I had a list or a spedific item that I wanted or needed. (This is why thrifting does not work for me unless it's done online) Often I am looking for a spedific color or style. That cuts down on impulse or inappropriate purchases. Some years those are more plentiful & that's when I will add to my wardrobe (after decluttering pieces I no longer wear )
I am a big fan of lists and wouldn’t go grocery shopping without one. HOWEVER, I’ve found having lists for my wardrobe has just become about replacing pieces that wear out and I end up looking for a replacement so specific that I miss out on the joy of finding new styles/colours/entirely new styles. This happened to me last year with a cardigan. I bought what I thought I needed and what was a good buy on paper. Then came across some really gorgeous clothes that would have done the same job, but in a different style. Now the cardigan I bought just feels dowdy and utilitarian and I’ve never actually worn it… lists be gone!!!
Do you keep a “Do NOT buy” list? Sometimes I get frustrated that I am not finding what I want and I end up buying something I probably shouldn’t. Like, another white button up shirt lol
Yes! I am not allowed to buy black or gray sweaters unless it is swap (one in, one out) because I have plenty! It's a lot dark color. I am hunting for red, pink, burgundy, purple to add color. I also keep seeing green sweaters...le sigh.
Yes certainly! It helps you to know it's 100% complete waste of money and time. You skip it or take one look and put it back on the rack without needing to spend another minute thinking about it. Some of my do-not-buy include anything cool tone, high neck or turtle neck tops/dresses, polyester fabric.
Absolutely. At the end of a season I go through what I did and didn’t wear and why and make sure not to repeat purchase what didn’t serve me. I also avoid ‘functional dupes’ and only wear my favourite of a particular style anyway.
Weird ask but…in a recent packing video you were packing your running gear, and packed your running undies. Do you have a favorite brand? I’ve been trying so many and can’t find one I like. Love all your videos! thank you! 😊
I am very visual. I don’t remember faces but I remember the outfit ppl wore when I met them (good, bad, or aura). For me, photo folder on my phone is the best way. I have items I bought in category albums I can reference to decide if I’d keep something. Before traveling I put clothing shoes accessories photos into a new folder to edit what I’d take. I am not naturally creative but I seek beauty in nature and created objects.
I discovered buying secondhand shoes to replace my favorite pieces that have been completely worn out. I know exactly the model, the size, and can be sure that they fit me well, so I just search online. So far I managed to buy two exact pairs I used to have, I wish I could do this with all of my favourite items 😅
Just curious..:in keeping with your recent curate of your style words, I can't help but wonder if you've added new layers to your hair? It's looking exceptionally Bomb Shell-ish lately. Beautiful!
what's the difference between a merino long sleeve tshirt and a merino long sleeve base layer? I can't seem to find the former...just lots of the later.
J'adore tes vidéos et j'écris en français car je sais que tu es bilingue. J'aimerais tellement ça être capable de suivre tes conseils mais c'est impossible. @SDPtor Just a guess about the gold oxfords. Alyssa may have filmed them, during a trip earlier this year, at @goodshoplondon. Did you see that video? Alyssa and Cristina flew to London together and met up with Signe. They spent a little time there, and then flew to Copenhagen. They visited some consignment and second hand clothing stores in both cities.
I took it for three months and didn’t notice any difference. I find this is the case with all of the online supplements I’ve tried. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve given up on trying any of these products. Not to mention the cost.

Take a pic of each outfit - put in a folder by use; like Work, date night, casual. So helpful, especially when in a hurry.
Making a list is a great idea.I also agree with waiting a while before buying.
As usual- very helpful. This is especially important for thrift shopping!

Sometimes things on my wish list become sold out……
But a wish list stops me buying something I like but don’t need.
I find very difficult to thrift without wanting things I really don’t need. That’s why avoiding is a great idea specially when I’m anxious
