My girlfriend at the time, my future wife, introduced me to Jackson Browne in 1973. I’ve been his biggest fan ever since. My beautiful wife passed away last October. Now, when I hear his songs, especially this one, I cry, not because of the sadness I feel, but because of the beautiful memories they bring.
I am so sorry for your loss. When I first heard Jackson Browne ( as late as 1978) I was blown away. I've followed the music all my life. Do you believe in the Afterlife? I didn't but now I do. There is so much science that pointe to the reality of the Subtle Dimension. I do believe you will meet your dear lady again and never be parted. Till then, sir, may you walk your days in peace..
Heard a story like that from James Taylor at a recent concert. He introduced "You've Got a Friend" by saying he was introduced to the song by Carole King when they were both playing the Troubadour in LA in 1969. She had just finished it and wanted Taylor to hear it. He went back to his hotel after the show and was working out how he would sing the song. He said he never imagined he would still be singing it 55 years later.
I was once told about Jason Isbell, on a MLB forum no less, about his propensity for sad songs. My response was "Have you ever heard of Jackson Browne"? The last line, .. "don't confront me with my failures, .. I had not forgotten them". Considering that he wrote the song at 16-17 years old, is staggeringly profound.
I was thinking the same exact thing. This song speaks to me so much more now at 53. it blows my mind a 16-year-old could be so insightful. Anyway, this is my new favorite version!
WoW, thank you. Your referral to him as JB drew another tear from my eye; realizing that he & Jimmy Buffett have the same initials. They are both very talented, gifted artists that God gifted the world with & their lives in this world will continue through their unique words & sounds. ~
I cry (at 80) hearing Jackson. How would I manage without him, he is such a HUGE part of my life, especially the early days. Please life, let me go first.
This was my mother's favorite Jackson song. I still can't get through listening to it without a lump in my throat and tearing up remembering her. Thank you Mr. Browne
I was turned on to Jackson by my brothers when I was 11. Now at 63 I so wish I could see him in concert. The limits I have these days may prevent that but I'm still trying. Thank you Jackson for one of the soundtracks of my life.
i have listen jacken browne since i was young.i am now 62 this song means a lot to me.these dayes.i listen to a wide rage of music these days but cant get past this song and to go and whatch other songs it keeps pulling me back.i have watched film clip so many times.
"These days I seem to think a lot About the things that I forgot to do for you And all the times I had the chance to" That cuts deep and must resonate for so many people
That was a lesson in my life I actually learned when I was 19-20. I am now almost 73. It involved the unexpected death of my brother who was like a twin although two years younger. A situation occurred which I have regretted every year since it happened. I turned him away at my door for what I thought was correct, but it really happened because of a selfish, petty desire. It was the last time I ever laid eyes on him. Ever since, I do not miss a moment to tell people that I love them. I don't want to ever regret again things I could have done or said but failed to. Somehow in his youth, Jackson wrote this beautiful song with a depth of knowledge and wisdom well beyond his years. It's almost as if he wrote it to be performed with such passion by his senior self after a lifetime of living. I love it. Absolutely extraordinary. ❤
" And ths children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor" Brings back memories of my older briother and I on a hot Florida day chasing the ice cream truck in the late 70's. Life gets messy and we dont talk much anymore. I hope he still runs after the ice cream truck when it comes around.
“There are many ways of breaking a heart. Stories were full of hearts broken by love, but what really broke a heart was taking away its dream - whatever that dream might be.” Pearl S. Buck
I hope this is not a silly story to tell…this song just always brings me back to this moment in time. It lessons of this song seemed so poignant at the time as they still do and always will. Way back in the mid 70’s, I was 15 and went out to a party with a guy I worked with. It was June and a beautiful early summer evening. Live music and beer, open fields and moon shadows. It was out on a farm and we got parked in(we were not really upset about it at the time🙂) and I didn’t get home until 3AM. My mom’s stare upon me sleeping woke me up in the morning! 😱 I was told I was grounded for the summer. I spend much of my days sitting under a big old oak tree in our backyard listening to this song over and over from my little battery operated tape recorder. I was so remorseful. 😪 After about 2 weeks my mom asked me why I was hanging around the house all the time. I apparently had earned my redemption and my freedom.🙂 It felt like a step in growing up…and remains timeless to this day.
I thought your comment "aren't that many days left" was poignant and it reminded me of a line in The Pretender... "I've been aware of the time going by, They say in the end, its the wink of an eye" I am in my 50's now and listened to Jackson for 40 plus. It's a shame that the awareness of Life's deeper meanings we have later in life isn't part of our understanding as younger men.
Why is that in all of the nearly 50 years I've heard this song, it NEVER gets old; and in fact, its many insights continue unfolding with the wisdom and experience that life brings. From such a young period of his life, a song he wrote beyond his personal experience remains rich and full of poignant depths.
From listening to vinyl in HS on the record player till today JB is still keeping me company. One of my favorite influencers. Thank you, Jackson, forever and always 🙏💛💕
Thanks for your consistent love and support towards me on my page, I really appreciate and can’t thank you enough. Write me with the address above so we can have more positive conversations about music and life in general 🥂💙
Absolutely the best live recorded version ever (and I've been listening to this song/seeing Jackson perform it since 1974!) Love that he is playing it in the lower key of C rather than a few of the higher keys it normally gets played--a much richer and more mellow (mature) sound. Can't beat the added incredible guitar talent of Val and Greg--probably the best musical accompaniment in Jackson's long career. Simply incredible.
The lyrics to his songs speak to so many of our real lives it is a gift. No one is alone when it comes to difficulties in life. Even a great songwriter!
Mary Beth, trust me when I say, it’s a big club! I’m pretty sure it has stuck with everyone who’s ever heard it. The fact that he wrote it at such a young age, has always blown me away. Regards

You are a man, Champ. So few unnastand the true and real and soul of love. It's not about Pretty or Hott, Its two hearts that move in tandem and amplify each others. You have more than any dollar could ever buy. Rest easy, you are the envy if the world. May God bless.
This music and band was pure magical, this album was and still is timeless listen to those rhythm,s and production oversee from Gary Katz, still better than most bands today in 2024 and drums from Jeff Porcaro it just doesn't get any better than this..
Jackson Browne was my first songwriting hero. Running On Empty was the album that introduced me to him, and I didn't even like that album touching others in my collection. It just seemed too special to be left in the same stack. Thanks, man. You mean a lot to me still.
wow - this song seems to take on a whole new meaning now - i was lucky enough to see jackson several times in the mid-70's at tanglewood in lenox ma - the voice is still unmistakable - and what a great backing band.
Saturate Before Using (is what I called it) and a joint and some good headphones in 1973. That started my life long journey listening to one of the many great musical artists of my generation. Now I don't need the joint. Being old is like being high. These Days has some great history to check out if you want to go down the you tube rabbit hole.
Saw this last night live. Imagine writing/recording/performing a song that can be so transformative for people many times in their lives, and doing it almost 60 years! What an underrated boss.
My Parents introduced all 4 of us Children to Jackson❤❤ Dad & His Now Grown Babies I am now 50 are going to see him in Brisbane in December ❤❤❤❤ We cannot wait I have seen him 3 times with Mum & Dad.
My brother Eldest brother Yagya Kanta Rai ( He calls himself Asif Noor these days ) introduced me to JB in, possibly 1981/82 in our little hometown of Darjeeling, when he was on army leave ( British Gurkhas stationed in Hong Kong )...And it was an audio tape. He was a marathon runner, equally versed with music, ....a philanthropist of sorts........ I still remember the cover of "Lawyers in Love" ......Paddling on......
Don"t tell me this is Jackson Browne. Time is conquering him. For 5 or 6 years , i went to his concert here in Cologne. The best concert i have ever been to. 3 hours of joy and happiness.
So grateful for the beautiful playing and singing Jackson. This song is timeless and so full of amazing lyrics and melodies. I had the original album this song was on as a young man growing up in Orange County.
I also grew up in OC. My high school boyfriend went to my rival high school with Jackson, Sunny Hills High. I first saw Jackson play with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on a date with said BF.......many moons ago. Who knew right? I have had a lifelong crush and have everything he ever recorded. He has been the soundtrack to my life.
Absolutely love this song! The first tune I learned to play on guitar. Still blows me away that he wrote this song when he was only 16! Talk about an old soul!
Great hearing you for the first time all those years ago, Jackson and even greater STILL hearing you, "these days". May YOU outlive your wonderful musical creations.
Went to see JB in Louisville Ky in early 70s. I didn’t really know who he was. My friend said,” You know it’s the guy that sings Doctor My Eyes” Needless to say I went and became a lifelong fan. His song Everyman on my all time favorites list. Beautiful rendition here of one of his great all time songs.
This first song was always poignant in New Mexico the first time and it seems even more so for the human family thousands of miles and decades later. The sweetest part is Jackson’s voice is still strong and sweet. And even sweeter is I am still married to the man I met around that time. Grateful to still be here.
"I had not forgotten them". Regarding past failures. Poignant, relatable since I was 16. I'm 62 now and this song still means so much to me. Thank you Jackson for sharing.
I first heard Jackson Browne at a party while I was in high school in 1974, fountain of sorrow came on the stereo system and I was attracted to the turntable like a hungry wolf and I picked up the album jacket and the girl who was having the party came up to me and said ....isn't that beautiful? She then thumbed through her stack of vinyl and produced For every man and Saturate before using and told me to stick around after the party I'll let borrow them and you can record them on cassette.....i spent the night.....loved her and Jackson Browne ever since.....she's gone as last year.....😢 the other day I was actually look long through some photographs I found inside a box and came across an old picture of the and I talking all serious and that song and something in her eyes caught me off guard and I began to cry over my long time friend and past lover passing away so abruptly......i love you Vicki(Lucy)😣😢❤
Had the pleasure to see Jackson Browne on the Lawyers in Love tour at Blossom Music Center in Ohio .Although father time has caught up to all of us this guy still seems to kick old age in the ass. Keep on truckin Jackson!
Incredible how much mental maturity and emotional intelligence he had at the age of 16 to be able to write this anthem to lost youth and love. Speaks to the loneliness and misgivings that we we all harbour and dredge up in our most private quietest moments
I walked into a record store in Minneapolis and the album Saturate Before Using was playing and I think it was Jamacia Say You Will. I could feel it deep in my soul and didn't know who it was so I asked to buy the album playing and my love for Jackson Browne began! This is one of my favorites!
How can someone be so introspective and not come out of life, jaded and cynical it’s amazing and And Jackson Browne has been my hero for that ever since I heard the pretender yeah, that was me. Wow, I’m still Aww
My girlfriend at the time, my future wife, introduced me to Jackson Browne in 1973. I’ve been his biggest fan ever since. My beautiful wife passed away last October. Condolences, Stephen.
Stephen M - thanks for sharing what you did. Sorry about your wife's passing and agreed JB is much of the soundtrack of my life. Best to you!
Guy wrote this when he was about 16 and is singing it in his mid-70s. What a journey he has been on with this song.

Jackson Browne has always been an old soul. He tells of the feelings that we try to describe but have no words for. He is a generation's laureate.

Quite possibly the best version of this fine song he's ever recorded.
Great version of a truly wonderful song, complete with the extra verse. I hope you see a lot more highways.

God I love lap and pedal steel and I sure am glad Jackson does too.
Stephen M - thanks for sharing what you did. Sorry about your wife's passing and agreed JB is much of the soundtrack of my life. Best to you!
So beautiful and deep I always sink down inside this one and listen with a heart wide open 💞
So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. How are you?
I feel blessed having JB's music in the soundtrack of my life but at the same time saddened knowing that it won't last forever.
Omg I love this man! There will never be anyone that will take his place on this earth,or in my heart!
Incredible how much mental maturity and emotional intelligence he had at the age of 16 to be able to write this anthem to lost youth and love. Speaks to the loneliness and misgivings that we we all harbour and dredge up in our most private quietest moments
Lovely song Jackson, good points of life ⚘️✌🏻
This is just beautiful. One of my favorite songs ever! Thank you.

I walked into a record store in Minneapolis and the album Saturate Before Using was playing and I think it was Jamacia Say You Will. I could feel it deep in my soul and didn't know who it was so I asked to buy the album playing and my love for Jackson Browne began! This is one of my favorites!
Muchas Gracias por compartir esta hermosa canción de este músico legendario.

Une merveille !
How can someone be so introspective and not come out of life, jaded and cynical it’s amazing and And Jackson Browne has been my hero for that ever since I heard the pretender yeah, that was me. Wow, I’m still Aww
