    LYRICS:
The words had all been spoken
And somehow the feeling still wasn’t right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning
Until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives had led us there
    Looking hard into your eyes
There was nobody I’d ever known
    Such an empty surprise
    To feel so alone
Now for me some words come easy
But I know that they don’t mean that much
Compared with the things that are said
    When lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don’t know what you loved in me
    Maybe the picture of somebody
You were hoping I might be
    Awake again, I can’t pretend
    And I know I’m alone
    And close to the end
    Of the feeling we’ve known
How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right
If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
To be the one you need
    Awake again, I can’t pretend
    And I know I’m alone
    And close to the end
    Of the feeling we’ve known
How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been running for that morning flight
Through the whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie
    Late for the sky

My best friend is his keyboard player here and was for over 25 years. He passed away last February- I have seen Jackson many, many times, playing all over the country as a guest of my friend. Rest in peace Jeff Young.

Hearing the breadth and depth Jeff Young added to Jackson's sound in this song for the first time, it is very painful to hear Jeff has departed this world. I am deeply sorry to hear you've lost your dear friend; the world has lost a talented, gentle soul.

I used to smile when I heard this age 23, not fully understanding the real meaning of it and now I cry age 63. I cry for the memories, the mistakes, the losses, the hurt, the love, the creativity, the gratitude for the spirit and the beautiful soul who gave us this amazingly deep and meaningful music. And I realise how very lucky I am to have lived during the last sixty years, when we had real soul on this beautiful hurting earth of ours.

I married my first late wife in 74 when this LP came out. My singular favorite memory in my life was laying in the dark with my new wife and listening to this LP front to back on my 70's kick ass system. I wept that night for the love of my new wife and what we had just heard together. She became very sick with a terminal issue and passed after a few years. So much time has passed and some memories faded, however that evening and this music is everlasting. I did see Jackson and the band do this show in Albuquerque last fall two days before he recorded this at ACL.

Jackson Brown, another one of my favorite artists. Living on the south side of Chicago, poor, Black, with almost no friends and ones who would turn on me if given a penny candy. But in those projects we lived in there was rock and roll, along with the very best of R and B anyone could ever hear, I fell in love with your music. It had a sorrow and a tenderness I wanted in my whole life and sometimes couldn't find. You wrote my heart and give me hope that there is a human heart just like mine. I love it and I love you and thank you for growing old the natural way. You are a real man of care and honor.

      MY FEELINGS EXACTLY!
I’m a big fan of the original Late for the Sky. With David Lindley.
That recording was a one time deal. Even David didn’t play it like that after that ( from what I’ve seen on UA-cam). I can tell David really planned those 2 solos out.
The phrases built upon one another. Absolutely beautiful. One of the best solos I’ve ever heard in my life.
This poor guy with the hollowbody Epiphone covered the notes that David Lindley played on the recording, but it came out 2 demensional.
David Lindley is the greatest instrumental guitar accompanyists I ever heard. That’s the difference; he was an ACCOMPANYIST to Jackson Browne. Not a guitar player playing a solo.
“ foot steps vanished into the air”, and David plays notes like steps ascending to the clouds
“ things that are said when lovers touch”- and David makes moaning sounds on the guitar.
After each line that Jackson sings,
he was mirroring what Jackson was saying. Completely awesome to me.
This was just a cover to me.
David Lindley influenced me to try and attempt to play like him.
If I could, I would nominate David’s playing for a Nobel prize on this song.
To me, he wasn’t playing notes, but emotions. Late for the Sky caught lightning in a bottle. But this was just a band covering a song.
“ Sorry but this is lacking in comparison to the original version “.....

@@JohnDoe-jc3cl very well said and like u stated David Lindley was the magic ingredient in Jacksons music, just majestic. One of my favourite examples is his violen solo on for a dancer that just is so unexplainably special. It has a sadness to it that touches your soul. And as u also said all the little tiny slides and bends he does just in the right places in songs. The man is a musical genius.

👍 👏 I’m just about 70 now and growing up as a ‘Baby Boomer’ (1945-65) think we had ‘real’ music in songs and artists! J. Brown and this song is one of those that’s a ‘classic’ imo (like Neil Young, Levon Helm - Woodstock and the many who performed there, etc.). I miss those days SO MUCH when ‘life’ itself was much different - simpler, kinder, peaceful, and without any internet and social media presence. Many of today’s generation of kids don’t even know how to interact with people in person and only by texting/video chats, and don’t know how to spell correctly since there’s ‘spell check’, books are long gone in schools and homework is done by computer. BUT I find it somewhat ironic that the lyrics to this, and other songs, mean much more to me as an adult vs when they were 1st released and I was a teenager.

I have owned Running on Empty as an LP, 8-track, cassette, CD, and of course, I have my digital versions as well. But Late for the Sky? That album was my cheat sheet. Literally everything I needed to know about life. I saw you play this at Tanglewood, I think, and it was the first time I became emotional in public and didn't care. I was a poor guy living in a basement apartment, but I bought 4th row tickets "day of," and drove out from the Merrimack Valley, 3 hours after work. I'm in my late fifties now, but I can still get there in my memories, though I can't actually get there. But, I'll have that. "For a Dancer" was a profound influence on my young daughter. It made her realize that there's time to do stuff, but not unlimited time. It made her a better person. Jackson Browne, you aren't an angel, but you entertained the hell out of me. Much appreciated. It may not mean much from a random guy, but I thank you. And "Opening Farewell" is the perfect song.

My fav song on my fav album, never fails to move to tears. How many times have we all been there in our lives, when we realize we are and have been drifting away from someone we cherish and that the distance now between us is too great to cross, that we must let go, with unbearable sorrow in our hearts? I know I have...more than once.

Autumn 1974. A friend of mine from the Lake, couple years older, a mentor of sorts. Well, he hunted me down and said "Jim, you have got to hear this!" Uhm what? "THIS MUSIC!" I said goodbye to Rose and we drove back to his house. This album and particularly this song "Late for the Sky" shifted my life. I felt love and understanding, forgiving. I felt answers to questions I didn't even have yet. Most of all I felt the rush and heartbreak only feelings for another can give. Bought this album the next day. Wore out so many needles and a few set of speakers playing this song. This song played for every Girl and every Woman I've ever known. Obviously I still play it, for us. This version, old style if you will, has the same heartfelt love as the original. Thank you Jackson Browne for your music.
