    I challenge how you put your strap into the winch. Some CHP will state it’s not a secure load if the strap doesn’t completely go through the winch.
    Your method has more of a possibility of slipping out.

    This video has helped me more with more loads than I realized 😅. When the hired help taught me to strap a load, they'd just run an end through the ratchet and start reeling her in. When there's too much strap left behind on small loads, the excess of a 30' plus strap just binds up against the rub rail. This is the only way on my opinion. When I taught this trick to a well seasoned trucker (as I'm a rookie) he asked "where the hell you learn that?" UA-cam bro. Everyone oughta have access to it nowadays. Thanks for the information.

  • @davidc.w.2908
    @davidc.w.2908 5 місяців тому

    Legally speaking this is short strapping, which is prohibited in the USA. The strap needs to come through the full winch. Following this explanation might earn you a ticket from the DOT, if they pull you over or into a weigh station and check your straps.

  • @RubberDuckDebugger
    @RubberDuckDebugger 23 дні тому

    Not that tossing to hook across wasn't cool, but it's far better to roll up the straps with the hook in the middle. Then you can throw the entire roll over and not worry about damaging anything as you hold on to the hook.
    I'm also pretty sure the strap is supposed to go through the gap, so the bar running along the edge can protect the strap If the trailer accidentally rubs against something.

    • @jamesgivens9997
      @jamesgivens9997 2 роки тому +2

      I always put a twist on both sides of the load if it is tall to prevent the straps from vibrating and sounding like a chorus line going down the road, putting a twist in the strap doesn't weaken the straps, there is a video on UA-cam demonstrating this and it only weakened the strap by like a 100lbs, so him saying it weakens it with a twist is him talking out his butt

    • @JohnC-yx5tq
      @JohnC-yx5tq 9 місяців тому

      On tall loads, where there is a lot of free strap to catch air, a half twist will prevent flapping, which can loosen the strap or rub or flap against an abrasive surface, causing wear.

    "Two more straps and we're done" how do you come with that? You have a load that ways 19,470 lbs and a each strap rated for 5400 lbs. Since you are making an educational video im sure you want to explain what the requirements of downward force are on a 19,470 lbs load.

    • @brownh2orat211
      @brownh2orat211 4 роки тому +1

      Because that is whats called an indirect securement, 19470 ÷ 5400 lbs = 3.60555 round up to 4, ÷ 2 = 2 the item is over 10 feet in length so a minimum of 3 required. FMCSA 392.9

    • @ProductionsJoe
      @ProductionsJoe 3 роки тому

      The total WLL needs to be equal at least half the weight of your load. So 3 straps of 5400WLL is 16 200lbs. 50% of 19470 is 9735lbs. He could've gotten away with only 2 straps if the load is small enough.

    • @BigLeagueDrew
      @BigLeagueDrew 3 роки тому +2

      If the load can roll you need 100% working load limit, if the load cannot roll you only 50% wll. The company I drive for has a wll for their trailers at 5,000lbs (at the weakest point). So if an indirect securement is used it counts as 5,000lbs wll (even though the straps and chains are rated higher, you must use the weakest point), a direct securement is half that of an indirect and would be worth 2,500lbs wll. DOT requires a minimum of 2 securements within the first 10 feet of the load, and 1 for every 10 feet thereafter.
      This load, technically, only needs 10,000lbs aggregate wll to be compliant… depending on length maybe 3 straps for a total of 15,000lbs wll. Front and rear cross chains may be a good options here as well. If front and rear cross chains are used, and one chain across the center, you’d be secured for 25,000lbs and secured from movement in all 5 required directions.

      I used to "short strap" for a while, because that was the "quick way" that I was taught. After a year I realized that I was rusty on the correct method. After a few straps of doing it right, (pulling fully through), I found it was just a quick as the short cut with practice. Plus it gets tighter, quicker. Only cost you about 5 seconds more to pull it out when un-securing. DOT will get you if they want to.

    The strap needs to go all the way through the winch slot and double back on itself. Folding it and pushing it in halfway is not a good habit.

    Why have the ratchet on driver side iv always thought if the trucker needed to tighten a strap they would rather do it on the passenger side father away from traffic? Especially spotting on a freeway or highway

    • @treypelham5515

      Yes, I agree with you but the way I set my straps up is I alternate the direction I’m winching the best I can. In a perfect world, there should be 12 winches on each side of the trailer.

      @@robertheinkel6225 yes I see how that can make sense but you do have mirrors on both sides of your rig. Personal I’d rather keep them on passenger side because I’d rather tighten them as far away from traffic as possible. Sometimes you can’t take an exit and have to stop on the side of the road

    The way he put the strap in the winches is not legal. The strap should always go completely through the winches. By doing it all the way through locks the strap in 2 positions instead of one. This guy is a pro. Just hasn't been taught the right way

    • @BigLeagueDrew
      @BigLeagueDrew 3 роки тому

      Wrong. Only a 50% aggregate working load limit is required. Remembering dot requires 2 securement within the first 10 feet and 1 every 10 feet thereafter. So if this load has 3 securement with a wll of 5k lbs each, it is legal. You only need 100% wll for loads that can roll ie. Suicide coils.

    Everything was good in this video, except that your straps are 5400 to 5600 lb each, and you put only three of them on 20,000 lb load.
    I thought you will go with at least 4 or even with 5 straps.

    • @skyeram
      @skyeram Рік тому +2

      DOT requirements for the number of straps and other securment devices are that you are (*only required to secure half the weight).
      Example; a 19500 lbs load ÷ 2 =9750 lbs that needs to be secured. Each strap is worth 5400, 5400 X 3 = 16200 lbs.
      Easiest way to remember is to just think of each strap is worth 10 thousand pounds, or 8 thousand each if you want to have some extra protection. FMCSA 393.106d

      Yeap, I was going to mention that and I'm glad you did. Ratchets ALWAYS go on the curb side, never on the road side. As he compared getting hit with the hook or the strap let's compare the sides; would you rather slip in a ditch or get run over by some idiot texting and driving? MUCH safer to have the ratchet on the curb side.
