Thanks mate, just started a new job where I have to drive a flat bed with safety barriers and a trailer with a 1.5ton excavator, straps all over, had excess under wheel on motorway few times this is excellent thank you
I love these kinds of hacks and tricks for things that have given all of us aggravation over the years. Its the simple solutions that fix common problems. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge.
I was born & raised in the trucking profession. After a hitch in the military, i followed in my dad's footsteps & drove trucks for 25+ yrs until a low back injury put a permanent braking stop to my career. I did alot of OTR (over the road) flat bedding/drop deck loads through the years. A driver once showed me an awesome way to stow & put away the "excess" strap behind any flatbed trailer ratchet. I have since then shared that awsome "excess strap stow away" idea to alot of other fellow truckers who had trouble trying to stow the excess strap away! I wish i could make a video to show you how it was done & there was no knot of anykind in this "excess" like ya have shown here. I'm most certain you would like my idea. Cool video you showed though & hopefully will help other who see this. Take care, God bless, & be safe.
@@felixfong6532 Yessir. . . . .i surely wish i could as well. I dunno anything bout trying to make a video of anykind, much less to share here on you tube. And try to write it here on how to do it would confuse the whole world without a visual of anykind. . . . . .DAGGUMIT ALL!!! And its real simple as eating a slice of homemade pie. . . . . !!! Maybe if ya was to friend me over there on Facebook Messenger. . . . perhaps i could git my girldriend to help me with a video sometime soon & i could show ya. I just dont know how to explain it without a visual of somekind as ive stated earlier. . . . . . also ITS NOT "my idea" as mistankly meantioned. I sure would love to share it with ya, by golly! Anything i can do to help out a fellow driver of anykind cuz we all gottuh stick together. . . . .10-4??? Truck Safe out there
Thnx for this video! I've hauled for many years, and NEVER saw this method used! I thought I had used them all .... I did flat-bed OTR throughout the Continental US and Canada, and fought straps with about every type of system, but never saw this one until your video. I only use the small straps now, but I'm looking fwd to trying this technique on those to see if it works equally as well. Thnx again!
G'day ,thanks for the tip, by the way I noticed that the end/tail of the strap comes out under the handle , this is a tip I learned not so long ago as well ,when you connect the strap and racket together just before ratcheting (the ratchet must start of closed) and the tail/end of the strap should be entered under neath and exit out the top , so that as you ratchet ...the tail ends up behind ( the ratchet has the potential to come unlocked the way you have it ) ( if that strap was to catch on something then tit lifts the ratchet handle it will become unlocked ...hope you understand what I meant
Thank you for showing me this method. I deliver natural stone and saw someone do this once and thought how easy she strapped and unstrapped the ratchet straps.
Aw man, that's awesome Mr. Pratt! I'm always having to strap stuff down in the bed of my truck, and always just wrapped the extra strap around the ratchet, but that looks a lot easier, thanks for sharing!
Lol, i made a video showing this same exact technique over a year ago! On your loop you pull thru, you can actually pull it farther so it goes back over the strap from the ratchet. This technique works flawlessly every time as you said!
i been showing new truck driver the same thing all the time some folks dont really know how important it is to get it right a loose strap can raise all kinds of hell when they get loose.Larry B
Really good method, I've been using it for some months, and works well. Usually I secure the looped end with two releasable cable tie, and it's not flipping around, and it is a double guard againts getting loose. Good video, thank You!
Thanks for sharing, If I may share my method, notice just below the ratchet there is a slot sewn in the ratchet side of the strap? Just loose roll your excess and slide it through the slot, then tighten your ratchet, Dont know if thats the intention but it works for me! Thanks again for sharing.
@@prattsgreenhousefarm9473 I didn’t even know how to properly feed the strap through the open slot till this week and had poor results, so I’ve learned some good tips which will be very helpful to know when I haul my motorcycle on my trailer.
I tried this one with my brand new yellow Erickson straps. They’re so slippery, this trick doesn’t work, and it just slowly slips apart. I used the other trick you mentioned. Thanks, though!
I usually get a little closer to the trailer so that the knot is hanging right underneath the ratchet with very little room to swing around but that's usually because I do more short distant hauling.
Little better tip. Roll it tighter. I leave just enough hole for the strap to go threw. Then roll it tight. Then I go all the way over the roll then cinch it up. Looks neater and won't flap around as much h.
Iv started a new job using straps every day and this was a major issue for me as always worried about it coming loose on the road , I'll try this tomorrow and let u know how I get on , btw I owe u a beer for this mate
Tips n tricks like this is what really makes the Internet a good place to be.
Indeed! Anything we need is right here ..... Some use it for trash and filth, but not all of us huh? Lol
I have using this method for years .
It has never failed , easy to undue, easy to wrap up extra strap
Thank you for being in you tube and sharing.
Had to come back and watch again because I forgot.
Thanks again!
It worked!! It worked perfectly! Wow! Showed my buddy this trick and we both are hooked! Thank you! It works soooo well.
Rich Holdaway glad you had good luck with it. It will be a big help from here on out I know it has been for me.
Just what I was looking for! Thanks for sharing, from a fellow trucker in the UK

Very useful. Thanks for taking the time to share. Greetings from Santiago, Chile.
Thanks Buddy. I had a friend that hays my property do the same knot and I was impressed. Handy and easy!
I learned this from some New Zealand truck drivers while working in Iraq as civilian contractors back in 2004. I have never had one come loose.
Starts actually showing you how at 1:16. Excellent video!!! I've used it many times but always have to come back because I forget.

Super clever and also helpful for dealing with straps for gymnastic rings! thanks for sharing 😊

Awesome tip! Thanks for taking the time to post!!!!
Fantastic! Can’t wait to try it. It’s always bothered me having excess strap dangling here and there. Thanks!

This is awesome. Thank you!!
Great tip, thanks. Just wish I hadn't cut mine already🤣 That's okay, I really only needed half the length anyway. Really good tip though👍
This video was really helpful. I modified it. Loop it around the rachet handle(to tie it down) and then do the loop knot. Keeps it secure.

David MacNaughton thanks for the tip I will definitely give that a try.
My older brother showed me how to do this a few years ago. I think he learned it from this video.
Awesome!
Dang thanks for this been at for 47 years and never saw that procedure
That is great. Thank you for this amazing tip!
My son braids it and it works really well. I’ll try this on my next load.
Take the lop you made and use the same knot just above the Rachet to tie it up workes great
Thanks. I been fight them for years. Works great.

Just learned something new today!

EXCELLENT !!!! Thanks soooo much !!!
This is awesome! Got to try this out next time. Thanks
wow, just watched this. Awesome!
Brilliant! Thank you!
I'm as excited as Mr Pratt is here
Run the end Excess strap back into the ratchet and tighten a few more times. That cuts the excess in half off the get go ..love the knot!
I really appreciate you sharing this. Thank you.
Good job! That is great!
I'm gonna try this. Can't tell you how many times I've been out there pouring sweat trying to figure out what to do with excess
Thank you, I will be using this technique.
You bet! I have been using it for 3 years now and I still think it’s the best method.

Strong tip. Thanks.
I don't know if it's been said but you can tuck the bundle under the lower hook below ratchet and tighten ratchet
This is great 👍🏾
