Fun fact (revealed on the Series 2 DVD cast commentary) - all the music you hear in this episode, not just what you see being played but even the music you're hearing on the radio that Manny turned on, was all recorded by Bill Bailey, he's literally dueting with himself.
I don't mind you pausing at all! I'm watching for your reaction after all. I could just watch episodes but the whole point of watching you is to see your reaction and your pausing and replaying bits is all part of it! It's great when you're incapacitated by laughter! 😄xxx
Nina Conti is the daughter of the Actor Tom Conti and she is one of the funniest ventriloquists performing today, her using members of the audience as 'dummies' is hysterically funny and worth a reaction on their own!
Kate's played by Nina Conti, went on to be a well known ventriloquist with her puppet Monkey. Sometimes the puppet's just a character, sometimes she comes across as Nina's therapist.
I usually like ventriloquists, but everything I've seen of her and Monkey does nothing for me. For most it is easy to suspend my disbelief. She seems less skilled at being able to sell the act, so to speak. Just not for me, I guess.
@bnsyphotography2104 100% truth. Genuinely at least a dozen things I say a day are from Black Books. Blame my autistic brain, I don’t care. But, having watched every episode at least 50x, it’s the truth. So…. Hop it.
@@GTRussell I'm the same, I quote Black Books multiple times a week lol. Don't know why it's so hard for other people to understand that some TV lines are very quotable. Black Books is no exception - in fact Dylan Moran is a pretty quotable person in general.
@@paulhollett8415 I know I'm just saying the fact that bill can play well was not intended to be a surprise I don't think so it's not a major spoiler in my opinion
Love the reaction guys. I was lucky enough to not know how talented a musician Bill Bailey was, so the scene where he discovers his talent was a huge surprise. I got goosebumps, being totally blind-sided by it. One of the best episodes. not only because of Bill's talent on full display but the rest of it is hilarious. Fran: "This was not what I imagined" Joseph: "Neither was my first wife." GOLD
Bill Bailey is ridiculously musically talented. Pretty sure he can play every class of instrument. Give him 5 minutes with an instrument and he'll give you a masterful performance.
This brought back happy memories. It was the beginning of my 20+ year long & ongoing daydream about being stranded with Nini Conti on an otherwise uninhabited planet. I can't explain it or justify it, it just IS.
Anyone complaining you pause so much - here's the thing - GO BUY THE DVD! Or go find another channel where they just hit play. Literally the clue as to what the channel is about is in the title. It's their reaction as much as the show and I like it. I like to hear their thoughts, their jokes, their views and the journey of discovery as he learns about shows he has never been exposed to before.
The lady who plays Kate is a stand-up ventriloquist with a twist (she uses audience members with masks on) - her name's Nina Conti & her work is definitely worth checking out - you'll HOWL!!!
Bill is a seriously talented musician, working as a gigging and session musician for many years before becoming famous. He uses a lot of instruments in his own shows.
I play many instruments, including keys in a few different groups, and sadly it has never attracted anyone to me. Even if it did, by the time you tear down all the equipment, no one is still hanging around anyway
So weird to watch this for the first time in probably 15 years and realising today that Bernard's date is Nina Conti, who wasn't famous then but is now.
Graham Linehan doesn't have much to do with this show after season 1. He doesn't have a writing or directing credit in seasons two and three. He's basically just the producer beyond this point.
Both Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey do some amazing one man shows. I have Dylan Moran "Monster" on DVD. It's hilarious. Dylan Moran getting more and more drunk as the show goes on.
I know of something similar. Between the eyebrows. The trick is to get them to focus on the finger and then bring it closer to their face, making them a little cross eyed and making the eyelids feel heavier. It works on everyone.
You really need to see some of Bill's stand-up routines - he uses music in them a lot. And once you've finished Black Books, I think you're going to need to see Green Wing (starring Tamsin Greig!)
That's a harpsichord. Piano keys hit from underneath and are actually padded. 3 strings per note from the treble down to the tenor, then 2 strings for the upper bass and 1 string for the lower bass.
I saw Dylan Moran perform live last night and it didn't go that well. He was the headline act and came on with a beer and was a little drunk. I don't think many people knew his comedy that well as he is very much how he appears in Black Books, a good few dozen walked out during his performance and heckled him, then Dylan walked straight off stage and the compere had to return to the stage and did some standup. The first time I have seen a comedian walk off midway through their performance.
I personally like the pauses. Its one of the reason that you are one of thew reaction channels i enjoy. You inject so much personality into the video rather than blankly staring at the screen. You two are awome, keep doing what your doing 😁
Don’t take Queen Boomer to see bagpipers 😮 she might be off 😂. I remember I was in a pub in my own little dream world and sang along to the song not realising everyone could hear me. I got a round of applause though 😂
Can you check out the 'Mighty Boosh'. It from the 90s starring Noel Fielding (a punk/goth) and Julian Barrett (a poet). If you can get into very, very obscure Brit comedy you can never get beyond the Mighty Boosh. The essential premise is they work in a zoo but can't seem to remember the animals' names. The zoo managers are a gorilla, Rollo and an ancient Shamen, Naboo. Give it a try. You'll love it!
Just reiterating the comments on Nina Conti, the girlfriend here. Yes, Nina is a very talented funny comedian ventriloquist. She's the daughter of the superb actor Tom Conti. Very funny woman.
Jusy as another friendly reminder: I hope sometime you guys can get to checking out Garth Marenghi's Dark Place - a weird and hilarious Hospital Drama parody and a truly unique experience.

I have all these on Dvd, if I wanted to watch them unpaused I would. I watch the reaction of you, Mrs boomer and even baby boomer... and to imagine I actually have friends to experience things with for a change
The pausing and the comments with you both are what makes this better. If someone is watching the show, they should go to channel 4, or at least watch the programme before seeing your reactions. I don't mind the pausing AT all. It really depends on the people and these two are more fun than the shows to me. As long as they back it up a little and not miss something.
I wouldn't worry about the pausing. It actually keeps you as a "reaction video" to comment often, you know, for copyright stuffs. :) I have 6 adult kids and I remember all too well the few-month-old bub hungries.
Ignore the comments, just go with what feels natural to you guys. I'm enjoying the content, keep it going! Also, check out SPACED when you're done with Black Books!

Fran/Tamsin pulls that face at 10:05 because the guy legitimately smacks her hands. She talks about it in the commentary of the episode. :)
if I had a nickel for every time Tamsin had issues with a blind man and a piano in a comedy.
She said that she desperately tried not to laugh when he hit her

I like her stuff with Monk better.
Oh cool, I've watched Black Books dozens of times and never clocked it was her.
Personally never found her act funny, not least of all because of how much her lips move but mostly the jokes just aren't that good.

When Bill is playing the piano that is literally just him doing his own stand up. You should deffo check out more of him.
This is a pretty old series and even back then, most Brits would have known Bill (bo) Bailey was a serious musician, so don’t sweat the “spoiler”.
Fun fact Bill is actually playing along to himself on the radio. Also series 2 ramps up from series and series 3 is even more ridiculous.
