Look for shelf milk, tastes like regular milk, on the baking isle in my market. Comes in quarter containers with long shelf life. I always keep one in the frig in case we run out+ it tastes way better than powdered milk. also get a supply of paper plates, bowls, cups, plastic silverware as you don’t want to waste water doing dishes!

When it looks like I am commenting at the early part of the video, it’s because I watch the video on tv, then go on my phone , pull up the video, then comment as the video is playing on my phone. So it looks like the comment comes from the beginning of the video , you’re doing a great job of stock piling ! I wonder if your video equipment will fit on the bottom shelf of the black shelf, that shelf could be moved over to that corner and free up the space where it is now🤷‍♀️ hard to tell on video

Pantry is looking great! I was watching Chef Prepper UA-cam channel and he said canned tomatoes are not good for long term storage, since the acid in the tomatoes will eventually compromise the cans. Nice work on the remodel.

When unknown, unreal possibilities of catastrophes were predicted in 2000, I was encouraged to stock up. I did bigtime. I have rotated the food around constantly since then. Don't forget salt, sugar, flour, coffee, dried milk, canned fruit, Koolaid, lighters and butter beads. I have enough to feed an army. You're getting there.

Bleach tabs last longer than bottle bleach. I love getting the giant pickle jars from local schools (from the concession stand at a ball game) clean it well and use it to store beans or rice.

Good info. I've been prepping for awhile. I'm currently putting together steel shelving, 5 shelves high. It originally came with particle board inserts for each shelf. I bought some plywood and cut it to size for the shelving and sanded them all. I want to polyurethane the shelves next. Then I'll store totes of stuff on the bottom shelves and canned goods like you.
I bought a small chest freezer too. I have a solar generator just to power that little freezer. I have a smaller solar generator to power my sump pump in my basement. Im stacking firewood now on 8ft steel log racks. I had 4 racks on my covered screen porch for a few year's now. I'm clearing off my porch right now, June 2024, so I can regrade and fix the cement floor so it drains away from the house. I also have a leak in my porch roof. I had a home inspector go over the whole house and I'm fixing it up and adding insulation too. I was overwhelmed when i started prepping but with time, im getting supplies stocked up, and my stress has gone down. It's great to have a plan and be ready. I'm a Navy brat. I learned from my Dad to be prepared. I'm working on my todo list every day and I have a lot of canning jars for this summers harvest. I also bought canning jar sealers. I'm able to store dry goods in the glass jars and pull all the air out. I freeze dry pet food, rice and pasta packages for a week or more first to kill food mites and larvae. Then i put them all in glass canning jars. Except the dog and cat food. That i have not saved and stored enough yet. Im thinking of using gallon freezer bags, then after freezing them over a week, transfer the bags into a 5g bucket with lid. We can add moisture-remover packets to each gallon freezer bag when its pulled from the freezer and stored in a bucket. I only have one dog and 3 elderly cats. It will keep their dry food fresher. I could leave their dry food in the freezer and just pull what i need from the gallon bags as i feed the pets. I need to store more canned dog and cat food as well. Luckily, i have a healthy source of beef and bison meat. My friends have chickens and i get eggs from them. I still have a lot more to do to get ready for this hurricane season, heavy duty weather warfare, next winters cold, any power outages and food shortages. I am doing so much in addition to working. I'm tired but keep pushing myself to do more.
I need to put aside some fuel in 5g jugs for my furnace, car, etc. I need to buy more of those fuel jugs.
Anyhow, I like your video. I saw that you are taking a break from utube a bit. Maybe, just keep all your videos up on your channel for now. Keep it public so you get residuals and Others will still get good info. Notifications will let subscribers know when you come back to post updates. All the best and keep on prepping. 2024 is the last summer before personal robots become readily available and an important growing season. Giddy up 🙏👍

Mark your cans with the expiration dates and use in that order. Vacuum seal your beans/rice. I store pasta in glass jars as it will have an "off" taste if air gets to it. I have noticed that canned goods have a much shorter expiration date on them lately. Used to be 2 years or more. Now, lucky if you get 6 months. You can store long term foods under beds and other furniture.

    • @rt3box6tx74

I mark my cans w/month and year purchased with a sharpie. Also, freeze all pasta, flour, cornmeal, cake mix, pudding mix, etc before storing. Freezing kills insect eggs that may be present when you purchase these items. Freezing bread for a day or two kills mold spores adding a week or more to its shelf life.

Mike, thank you for this video. I have watched this video a couple of times & I’m so glad to have addresses about cans lasting longer than the date on the can. My best friend came over while I was down & out. Thinking she was helping got rid of everything that she thought had expired. I was brought up by parents from the depression. cans that were damaged or the top was puffy were bad! I was so upset with her I was in tears. She’s been my best friend for 47years & I know she was only concerned for me.
You have even addressed stuff than I had not thought off, so shank you so much again. I’m also so sorry for your loss, it’s devastating to loose a pet that you have had for so long.❣️

Stock up on vinegar too. It can be used as both a preservative, to sterilize in some cases and as a cleaner.
Be sure to look at the inside of the can when you open canned foods that are "expired". If the can liner is very discolored think twice before consuming. Be sure to have enough protein on hand. My parents kept a pantry and two freezers full of store bought and home canned food. That wasn't "prepping" it was crop insurance. You never knew when your crop would get hailed out and there'd be zero income that yr. My mom kept a 20-40 lbs of sugar in big gallon jars in the pantry, same amount of flour and cornmeal in the freezer in gallon jars too. Anything made with flour or cornmeal won't get weevils if kept in the freezer. Cake mixes, pudding mix, etc.

You're doing the right thing, Mike. Be better prepared. Times are not looking good. I started prepping very early in 2019 because I knew our monetary system was coming to an end. I thought it made sense to start early because the price of all food was going to go up. I also have Lifestraws. Next month I'm going to buy a multi-band radio. Last year we lost a lot of stuff in a big fire. The garden and chickens will help us. We are in the process of building a water cistern as our well has dried up in the summer for the last 2 years. A good friend is a doctor and has provided us with medication such as antibiotics for emergencies. And I also have 150 kg of dog food. The garden will produce all the fresh vegetables and fruit. We will be fine.
And a very big help is a good community. We have like-minded people and we had meet ups to talk about, what everyone could do in the case someone needs help.

Music 🎵 to my ears! Great job 👍🏼😎 One thing that truly doesn’t have a long shelf life is the bleach. You’ll want to replace that about every six months. Raw, local-as-possible Honey is a must have on your shelves. Not only is it good as a sweetener, but it can be used topically on wounds n bites etc. it is also effective as an antihistamine when used daily. 🍯

You have a nice start, but you said it would last months? You really should eat only from the pantry for a week, and write down what you use. You can use that list to replace items, but more importantly know how much food it takes for a week.
Most people way underestimate canned meats. If only tuna, 14 small cans per week. Chicken 7 cans per week. Otherwise lots of beans. With limited space the soup and corn should be replaced with proteins.
