Strangely, the only place in Asia this happened to me was Japan! Yes, the police were polite but it's pretty obvious when you're at an airport and you're the ONLY person stopped while your things are searched in detail. Still, in a small airport in China, the immigration officer was "confused" by all the stamps in my passport which caused me to be held up in line. Rude people tho? Immigration in Detroit, MI, USA whether by land or air, every. single. time. I literally pay extra to avoid those wyt people!!! They were rude to my elderly mother as well. *smh*
On behalf of my people, I apologize how you were treated by this cop. That cop doesn't represent the rest of us Mexicans. Every country has it problems. I hope that over all you have a great experience in Mexico. Blessings.

I am sure the positives outweigh these minor transgressions but as an African who loves to travel I personally avoid travelling to any place where I will be profiled unless i stay in the safe tourist zones. I have heard this happens in the DR too and it ut a stop on my desire to visit that country. I have gone to Belize, Jamaica, Colombia and never felt my race was an issue. When i was working in Dallas one of my closest friends was Mexican, good people but its sad that the US and or Mexican governments allows this to go on when every one knows 90% or more of illegal migration from that region is Latinos who dont look like Haitians. Plain old racism, no other way around it.
@mjohnson1741 I'm not ashamed of how ILLEGAL immigrants are treated. They know they're breaking the law by trespassing into another country but don't care. An American can't illegally trespass into Mexico and get food stamps, SSI and free motel rooms.
I’m also Black and from the US and this sort of profiling has been happening to me since 1991 when I spent my junior year of high school in Puebla, Mexico. The most recent time it happened (in Puebla in 2019), my son and I were in the line to board our flight at the airport in Puebla. Now mind you, we had already shown our passports twice (at the normal times - once at the check-in counter and then at the security line). We were lined up to board the flight and two officers came and pulled us out of the line asking us to show them our passports. We showed them our passports and then they asked us for a second form of ID! I couldn’t believe it! I pulled out my CA driver license, but my son who was 17 still didn’t have a license or CA ID. Luckily he had his high school student ID and they accepted that. I asked one of the officers if he pulled us out of the line because we’re Black. He said, “Oh no! We’re pulling out people who look like foreigners.” I said, “What about that blonde-haired blue-eyed couple up ahead who just got on the plane?” He didn’t answer; he just said, “We don’t discriminate in Mexico.” Then he asked me to tell my son (because my son doesn’t speak Spanish) that he wasn’t being racist (probably because my son looked so annoyed). Finally we were allowed to board the flight after everybody else had boarded. Everybody else had been seated already. Similar situations also happened when traveling with my mom. I told my friends in Puebla about it and they said not to take it as racism; Mexico just has to do the job the US is making them do, they said. I responded that it still means Mexico is practicing racism because I get treated differently based on my race. It’s never happened when I’ve traveled there with my White ex. Mexico can’t claim it is not practicing racism when it is clearly practicing racism. There are nondiscriminatory ways to check people’s papers.
yes many of the people do especially the border patrol agents in both countries who are genetically from Mexico towards people of African ancestry.. you have to research what they have been bombarded in their media for over 70 years. for example, an independent research was conducted unknown to the CBP agents at the lax airport and the investigators found out that the custom Border patrol agents at the los angeles international airport have a sworn eternal hatred usually abuse and harass people of African descent and they are 99 percent of Mexican origin
I'm Mexican and I'm ashamed to tell you that there's a lot of racism in Mexico too, people who are of European descend does practice racism against indigenous people, just the same as in the United States, and many other places in the world, black people and Mexicans are being profiled by white people, let alone the police, they think we are all suspicious of some illegal activities, Mexican authorities knows that American citizens are coming to the Country to get fentanil. and then crossing to the States because they barely got checked out by US customs at the border, so racism exists everywhere my friend, although in this case sounds more like profiling members of a community. take care brother.

no way i forgot Haitian brothers also in the midst of the chaos down there & now with everything that occurred months back with the 4 Americans that got shot at & snatched up after & 2 didn't make it back home RIP to those brothers.It's like a norm nowadays for their police force down there to constantly be on alert for black folk in the most annoying way & honestly my vacation trip would've felt ruined after all that doing b lines straight towards me & partner? Sorry to hear that this happened to you but it is in no way an isolated incident. I was traveling from Belize to Merida last December when I encountered a very abrasive immigration officer. I was born in Belize but I am also a British national. Crossing the border from Belize into Mexico, there was a HUGE back up in the immigration line to enter Mexico and only one person checking us in, a female immigration officer. A male immigration officer was walking through the office distributing the immigration forms to people in the line. Before he got to where I was in the line he approached me and asked, “Sir can I see your travel document” ? I presented him with my Belize passport and he continued issuing forms to everyone else. Now I must say, I am a very dark black man, and when I am in Belize or the Caribbean area I become even darker, we are talking Wesley Snipes dark. All the same, the other people in the like were all Belize Latinos or white Americans. NO ONE ELSE in that line if what must have been well over 100 people was asked to show any documents. I waited my turn to get the immigration check in desk and, when it was my turn, the same male immigration officer was now helping his female colleague. I approached and presented my passport, he asked where I was going and how long I intended to remain in Mexico. His questions were more like an interrogation, very intrusive and his tone and attitude was very abrasive throughout. Eventually I produced my British passport and showed this to him without being asked and although his attitude did not change, the questions stopped and he stamped my Belize passport for entry into Mexico. I had travelled to Mexico MANY TIMES before, coming from the UK as well as from Belize, but in all my previous visits, I had NEVER been treated like this, although I have seen other dark skinned Belizeans complain on social media about similar experiences in Mexico before. So yes people, it is real and black travelers are being singled out for harassment when traveling to Mexico.
Profiling is dehumanizing. It stinks that you had to go through this four times just going to Oaxaca but I'm really glad that you figured out why it happened. How the Haitians and others are being treated, in large part due to the U.S. is sickening. I appreciate you for showing this.
Before I even finished watching your vid, I KNEW it was because they thought you "might" be Haitian. I first noticed this in 2018 when I went back to Playa del Carmen. I hadn't been to Mexico in a number of years, and was surprised at the changes. Because my Spanish is "good" (i.e. "proper") they couldn't identify where I was from. The minute I showed them my American passport, everything became different and pleasant... like the old Mexico I traveled to often, during the '90's. This happened at my hotel, and somewhere else. It wasn't until I watched another UA-camr during the pandemic, that I realized Mexico has a "problem" with Haitians. I went back to Puerto Vallarta in 7/21 and had a similar issue during customs check, and came close to cursing that man out in Spanish!! This year, I went back to PDC, but stayed on the resort and had no issues. Do you remember the African American family that drove from NC to Matamoros in March of this year, and was killed by gang members?? That happened because they were mistaken for HATIAN TRAFICANTES !!! This is so sad, especially since Mexico has ALWAYS been a friendly place for Black people to travel. I feel bad for Haitians fleeing poverty and death, but I wish Mexican officials would get cultural competency training, and realize that not all "Black" folks are the same!!
Yes, Haitians have a very bad reputation in Latin America, in Chile they have killed several Haitians because they have very aggressive behaviors with the local populations where they arrive. Of course, not all of them are bad people, but people like it generalize.
You can easily look up what problems immigrants are causing in Mexico. Haitians are being aggressive and destroying stuff in Mexico. they don’t have no right to enter mexico illegally, they want to came to United States and they when they can’t cross the border. so then what happens they stay in Mexico, and many of them just want people to give them stuff for free, free food fee shelter. and there’s wayyy to much immigrant in Mexico I google how many immigrants are in in Tapachula and there’s about 40,000 to 50,000 that’s to much immigrants in one city. Even Central Americans are complaining about Haitians. I see the news in Spanish. I get how annoying these guys are by being stop by the police because they thing their Haitians, but I don’t think it’s because of racism, why aren’t they talking about the problems that immigrants are doing in Mexico. it’s not Mexico fault of what their country’s do to their own people.
We spent 3 weeks in Mexico around the time of your trip and my husband’s bag was searched as we were leaving the country on the last leg from Mérida to U.S.. They kept asking if he had “powder” in his bag and were so obvious about the profiling. Based on what happened to you both in Cancun, I wonder if this is also common practice in the Yucatán considering its geographical proximity to Haiti. :(
Awesome episode! New Subscriber here because of this video and let me tell you guys that you are on point. I have a few black friends who went through similar situations and even worse. But not in all of Mexico just in the same regions you were both in. I really appreciate you making videos like these to help inform everyone of what really goes on out here in Mexico. The mostly good, sometimes bad, & rarely ugly, and this is one of those ugly times. Trust me my wife gets singled out from time to time and she's just brown and Mexican! Discrimination is a bit hard to avoid. It may not as overt as in the US we find that discrimination, colorism happen in many places. Don't scratch Mexico off your list just yet. There's lots of this country to explore. We're just shedding light on 2 areas.
I think you’ll have less of the blatant profiling and discrimination like you do in Mexico in places like Panama and Colombia. I am dark skinned single woman traveller and I have never been made to feel as unsafe as I did in Mexico from police or military. But you can’t escape racism in Latin America it was colonized and just like the US their structures and people I power are still in place. Also, Panama and Colombia has a larger Black population and you’ll enjoy their culture more.

If you guys came to Mexico believing it is racist free, Mexico has many people that you would call "racist", it is just not publicized. As someone that has lived in Mexico since 1997, don't let it get you down. THe USA is certainly not the only country that has "racist" people, they are found in EVERY country. Just let your chip fall off and enjoy our lives.

As a Mexican that loves to see foreigners visiting our country, I am so sorry for the unfortunate experience you went through. I've been following your channel since you had like 5K followers and were roaming in Guadalajara (my hometown) and so sorry that your overall good experiences in my country have been tarnished due to the issues at hand. However lately as you've learned, there's this issues with Haitian immigrants and unfortunately this has encouraged this kind of racial profiling. Not to apologize the attitude of the police officers but I think they're merely following orders of a governmental initiative as a response of the migrant crisis you've described. Furthermore there's also migrants coming from Central America whose last destination is the USA and some fit the same kind of profile. Regardless this kind of blatant profiling shouldn't happen. Anyway, hoping your future travels will be stress free and filled with great experiences 🙏🏼
I think you're right outside the airport and some scammer situations, Mexico is super nice and the people are super relaxed and helpful. But the conditions at the airport do give the impression of racism, although this may be a false impression. But it does stand out and if some group of visitors misbehave, then it is logical that actions are taken.

Hey guys, thanks for sharing your experience. When I was younger, I had a relationship with a anglo-american woman. When we traveled to the US, they checked her, and her bags with dogs and all the tools they have. I got kind of offended and she was so embarrased because they were getting her dirty undies and all out on the table! However, during that time American women were hooking up with Mexican guys and carrying drugs back to the US. That was a long time ago...But I know the feeling. Be safe and enjoy Mexico. The mayority of us do not care about skin color. I am so sorry for our Haitian brothers. I hope they get a resolution. I will be retiring from the US soon and I plan to live between Mexico and Brazil.
This recently happened to me in Merida going to Cancun. My daughter and I were the only ones stopped in the ADO terminal and then the bus driver checked out documents before we boarded the bus. No one else was checked. No one else was black either.

The same exact thing happened to me taking a bus from Tulum all the way to Chiapas. I was the only black person on the bus and they pulled me over every time and checked my documents and things. It completely changed my perspective. And to top it off on the way to California. I was detained at the usa border for an hour because I fit the description of a Haitian migrant

When my boyfriend and I lived in Merida last year, this is why I always grabbed our passports every time we headed out the door. Even just for a walk around the block. I knew they were looking for Haitian immigrants. We didn't want nooooo problems. Carry your passport at all times! We love Mexico.
If you carry a cell phone why not carry your passport. The US is making all holders of Drivers license in the to obtain a REAL ID for identification you have until January 2024 to get one.

I've been stopped, had my bags searched when returning to the US from Asia, one time missing a flight because they held me for so long. On another trip to China, an armed airport security guard accosted me, wanting me to go with him. My girlfriend at the time, grabbed my arm and told the guard "He is with ME!" The guard hesitated, then relented. My girlfriend had long blond hair. He did not anticipate that we were together, and he didn't know what do for a moment. He was probably wondering if we were actually together or if she was coming to a stranger's aid. I shudder to think what I would've been put through if I had been traveling alone. I've traveled to Ecuador and Brazil and have had no problems with immigration, although the one and only time I had been to Mexico-- Mexico City airport on a layover, returning from Brazil-- security confiscated a tape measure I had in my carry-on bag. Otherwise, no problem with Mexico. In some countries, smugglers face a death penalty for traveling with drugs. Knowing the prejudices of people, there's no way I would risk traveling while Black and carrying drugs. I don't do drugs and rarely even drink alcohol, yet, to some, I'm targeted as someone who does. I can understand the reasoning for this, but it hurts when it happens to you, for a physical quality you can't help. The officers have to follow certain official protocols but ultimately, it's up to the discretion of the individual who is acting upon their own preconceived notions of who is good or bad, innocent or guilty. But... I'll risk it, because I love traveling so much!

On the phone I pass for Hispanic but as soon as anyone sees me they say gringo. The husband thinks it’s hilarious but we get overcharged everywhere!! We go eat and order a bottle of wine. Nice. Next time we go back they never have the same wine, only more expensive ones. Of course we always tip well. They are jacking the bill up because I’m gringo. I can’t prove it but I know it. It’s very sad how we are pre judged in this world. Sorry for your experience. But in the end I still believe most people are good.

Good thing you had documents.There's nothing wrong with being questioned by authorities.The problem is when the approach is based solely on your ethnicity.
I liken it to dealing with any "stranger." We're gonna check them out extra careful if they look a certain way. Somebody knocks on our front door at home wearing clothing not ordinarily seen in our neighborhood (or even if they are of a different ethnic background), we're gonna wonder, "What the heck...?" Not trying to make light of the situation in this vid, but it's natural to be on guard when we encounter something out of the ordinary. Yes, it makes us feel uncomfortable when we’re labeled as suspicious, but we humans are pretty “paranoid,” and for good reason. It’s a survival instinct.

Sorry you all had to go through this. I consider myself to be a seasoned international traveler, but there are a number of countries where I would not be doing what you're doing as far as ground transportation. Mexico is one of them. There are some amazing towns and cities in Mexico, but then there's a lot of smaller towns in-between that are not so "tourist friendly" to black folk. I've traveled quite a bit in Brazil and never once had any issues. Having said this, I'm a fair skinned brother, so I don't want to dismiss that, as f'd up as I know that is. Good luck to y'all. Y'all just need to come back to Salvador, make that your home base and carry on. You got more views in Brazil anyway.
@@krazyjnva2up2down55 that's kind of the point dumbazz. You need to know your surroundings. I've been on city buses in Rio and São Paulo dozens of times with no issues. I've also taken 10+ hour bus rides between different cities/towns in Brazil, but since I have street sense and travel smarts, I don't stick out.
They're not descriminating you because you're Black... they're discriminating you because they think you're from Haiti, Jamaica or something like that... Try sayng "We're Black Americans" and show passport right away... and you'll see the magic happening...

I just got back from my 1st visit to Cancun a couple of months ago and I must say that although it was a good for the most part, I observed several instances that made me wish that I spoke spanish and wasn't traveling solo. I've been to several regions of Mexico on various trips and it is what it is. I'm ready to explore some other places in the days to come. Keep up the great work, I love this channel!!!! Hi Guys! Love your videos and thanks for sharing this update. I do disagree on one point where you state this is a Mexican problem. I feel its due to the current US open border policy which allows migrants safe passage through Mexico into the US. But I do appreciate your heads up on this issue and I will take notice on my future visits. Just for context, I am a late 40s (dark skinned) black American man. I speak close to fluent Spanish and have traveled southern Mexico for over 10 years now. I've been through the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero (among many others). I was approached by and stopped by INM in the Acapulco bus station once and asked to produce my documents, but I understood why giving the migrant situation. NOT saying its right. I do also feel Mexicans are not as familiar with how black Americans present themselves and they may incorrectly associate certain hairstyles (dreads) and attire with marijuana. It does seems the agents are focused on drug and immigration enforcement which is WAY better than the US where blacks are profiled randomly. Please enjoy Mexico because I would give ANYTHING to trade places with you guys as inner-city USA is NOT the place to thrive right now. Just my 2 cents.
We stated in the video that it was on part due to the US pressuring Mexico. One profiling us just as bad as another. What MX 8d doing to those immigrants is horrible and the way that they are profilig and policing all back ppl is also disgusting. Love MX but they are dead wrong here.
I’m retired and spend most of my time in Mexico. I mostly travel by plane. I once took a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, and then later to Tulum. They were short rides and the check points didn’t stop us. I stay in the resort towns, because there is too much drama outside them.
Good grief. I'm sorry you had to go through that interrogation. (Nobody wants to deal with the Real problem: Haiti is out of control.). I can imagine you two settling happily in Oaxaca...it's the cradle of democracy/liberal life in Mexico: Something I think a lot of people do not consider when they move to Mexico: local politics, ie. Merida is conservative Christian (but I still love it & they have a lg enough Lebanese population to keep it in check).
We’re just sharing our experience but it pales in comparison to what migrants are fleeing at home and what they go through here. Oaxaca has been tranquil so far. A place everyone should visit.

😟 I’m sorry that happened to you. We were stopped on a bus once in the daytime in Costa Rica. Men dressed in camo fatigues and carrying machine guns came on and stopped at our seats toward the back. It was scary. I can imagine it must have felt really bad to be targeted like that several times in the middle of the night, and at the airport in Cancun. I am a "white" British man and this kind of profiling often happened to me while travelling in Europe in the 60´s. The reason for this is I was young and had long hair.
@@TheYarbros Well, not exactly. When you really study history, you'll realize how very troubled the world has always been. During the WWII era, the peak time of the following situation, each of the European groups of people was considered a different race!! The English couldn't marry the French, the French couldn't marry the Germans, and so on (but there have always been exceptions). We need to study history in depth. Nowadays, what we learn comes mostly from pundits who almost never reference history and put things in an historical context. We are so ignorant, often causing us to get upset with things unnecessarily, considering circumstances have often been much, much worse. Of course, lets continue to call out abusive treatment wherever we find it in the hope that things will improve going forward.

I really want to visit an Afro-Mexican community next time I'm down there. I am a "Blaxican"-Black father, Mexican-American mother-and I think I've met maybe 2 or 3 others like me in my entire life.
Okay. I traveled through beautiful Mexico by bus from Tijuana to Mexico City. The bus that I was on was stopped four times. However, I did not have my passport. What I did was pay a bribe (not recommended) because the officer pulled me off the bus, checked through my luggage, and then I guess felt bad. I truly did not know that the passport was not required. However, I did have my US driver's license. At each checkpoint, I paid $20 until I reached Mexico City. In Mexico City, I found someone to help me get a Mexican passport (I do not advise doing this today). I continued my travel into Belize City. I recommend that you always have your travel documents. But know this... these officers do not usually make very much income. And often, they are looking for a bribe. If you find yourself being stopped often, do not think it is because of your skin color or race. More often than not, it is because they know that you are from the U.S. and have the ability to kick them down a few shillings. I was told by a fellow passenger who was from the U.S. but born in Mexico, that I could have given them $5. and that would have been sufficient. At the end of the day, I felt solidarity with these checkpoint guards; donating $20. so they can feed their families and continue to keep the roads safe, was an honor for me.
Cool, interesting perspective...but donating is a choice. If I don't have a choice it's called extortion. I don't like being extorted in a country that I'm visiting.
@@TheYarbros We are extorted every day in the U.S. and we never realize it or refer to it as it really is. The big difference is that in Mexico you know your money is not going to fund wars or oppress smaller countries. A famous Muslim scholar said something like, You can change the name of a thing, but it does not change the substance of that thing. You pay according to your status in life. Compared to most Mexicans, we enjoy a much higher status. Therefore, if I can pay a little more, I feel honored to do so. BTW, I loved Mexico and compared to the hazards or dangers of being Black in America, I choose being Black in Mexico any day. I recently made the boldest move by ditching the US. The reason why in Chiapas they ask you for documents is because it is already the border with Guatemala and many people come from Central America and Haitians, same thing happens in the USA, for exemple San Diego and its surroundings there are checkpoints for immigration agents.
The immigration issue in Mexico is bad, there are also a lot of Hatians and Africans in Mexico City. The US government needs to step up. The other borders have been wide open for Ukrainians.
We moved to Rosarito Mexico, myself my daughter and her kids. My daughter is Hispanic her kids are mixed with black as soon as my grandson turned 18 he bounced. He was constantly pulled over here in Rosarito Mexico. He is a beautiful young man and they never left him alone
First time I went to Mexico I did not speak spanish but the second time I went I learned to speak spanish fluently. it was more enjoyable and i realized that the Mexican people showed me mad love and Im dark skinned lol. I noticed at the Mexican Airports that immigration has not singled me out to do a thorough search. However, last year, I took a bus from Hermosillo to Tijuana, and immigration singled me out at a stop I believe was in Mexicali. I showed them my documents that I was American. But I was somewhat harassed. Besides that, everything has been ok.
The guy from the video saying Tapachula is hell, is well known for being a migrant recruiter. He has an agenda and is being paid by US related "social" groups. He was actually charged for human trafficking but then let out as a lawyer paid by God Knows who, won the judgement arguing he is just helping the poor.

It is more than the Haitian migration. Over 10 years ago when there was no Haitian migration, I was traveling back home from Ensenada. I was driving in a line up to the toll booth. I paid my toll and was immediately pulled over. They searched my truck and kept asking if I had a pistol. That was the last time I visited Mexico. I have changed planes there but I would advise my worst enemy to stay away from Mexico. They are being nice to you because they think you have money. Underneath that friendly exterior, they hate you. Check out theMexico's favorite comic strip Memín Pinguín. That in a nutshell is what they think of black people. Their police and military are all linked to the drug cartels. So if you get into trouble, you are on your own. Just don't go to Mexico.
Although this doesn’t ruin your trip/travel, it’s very aggravating to deal with this type of thing after spending money on flights and accommodation. I can get this treatment at home. I don’t have to spend thousands of dollars for it.

Well, there goes my interest in traveling to Mexico. I don’t have the patients for being discriminated against so obviously. I know the people are not like that. But, just the same, it makes for a very nerve wrecking experience because they could do anything to you and you have no say. Im a darker skinned Asian American and almost every I go to MX outside of a cruise, they search me intrusively at the airport, festivals and clubs. At Zamna in Tulum, they were looking through my shoes, every item in my bag, and asked me to pop my phone cover off. Disgusting treatment when Iam paying Dubai prices in a 3rd world country.
By the way, I'm an older retired black woman and I Love Mexico. I jumped in and made myself useful (tutoring English for Free), while studying Spanish and learning more about the beautiful art and fabulous food! 😅
As U.S. born Mexican American and having been to Mexico back and forth since i was a kid it's not surprising to see this. Its a totally different culture i don't care what people say about the friendliness and beauty of it. The government is going to do what they want to do and your rights go out the window. If they know your a foreigner at some point your going to get treated different thats the reality. Even myself that can blend in easily will get treated the same if circumstances occur if i had to identify been from another country. My advice is don't have expectations that it's the same being in Mexico. It's unfortunate you guys experienced that side of it. Safe travels. 🙏
With all due respect, I thought you were going to say something serious like they took you off the bus or detained you. Come on, that's literally nothing compared to what happens in the U.S. People I know personally, and myself. Pulled over and written a ticket for speeding when we weren't speeding, beat up and dropped off in an alley, drugs planted, arrested on fake charges. How many unarmed people have been shot by police? Thousand examples caught on video all over social media. It sounds like a valid reason if Mexico has an immigrant crisis. In the U.S. it's purely hate and jealousy. The most times I was bothered by police in the U.S. was when I had a white girlfriend.

It's not the people. Even most of the gov't workers show in their mannerisms that they don't want to profile people, and they will do all they can to help you. I'd rather go through this in Mexico than here in the US, because I never feel like it could be an end of life experience when I'm there. Don't let it stop you. I live in Monterrey, MX and travel back and forth to Austin, TX. As soon as I drive across the border, the feeling of freedom hits me... The US is a dark, dark place, and I only knew it was so bad when I started traveling. Mexico is an amazing place and the people never cease to amaze me. Strangely, the only place in Asia this happened to me was Japan! Yes, the police were polite but it's pretty obvious when you're at an airport and you're the ONLY person stopped while your things are searched in detail. Still, in a small airport in China, the immigration officer was "confused" by all the stamps in my passport which caused me to be held up in line. Rude people tho? Immigration in Detroit, MI, USA whether by land or air, every. single. time. I literally pay extra to avoid those wyt people!!! They were rude to my elderly mother as well. *smh*

I am sure the positives outweigh these minor transgressions but as an African who loves to travel I personally avoid travelling to any place where I will be profiled unless i stay in the safe tourist zones. I have heard this happens in the DR too and it ut a stop on my desire to visit that country.
I have gone to Belize, Jamaica, Colombia and never felt my race was an issue. When i was working in Dallas one of my closest friends was Mexican, good people but its sad that the US and or Mexican governments allows this to go on when every one knows 90% or more of illegal migration from that region is Latinos who dont look like Haitians. @mjohnson1741 I'm not ashamed of how ILLEGAL immigrants are treated. They know they're breaking the law by trespassing into another country but don't care. An American can't illegally trespass into Mexico and get food stamps, SSI and free motel rooms.
I’m also Black and from the US and this sort of profiling has been happening to me since 1991 when I spent my junior year of high school in Puebla, Mexico. The most recent time it happened (in Puebla in 2019), my son and I were in the line to board our flight at the airport in Puebla. Now mind you, we had already shown our passports twice (at the normal times - once at the check-in counter and then at the security line). We were lined up to board the flight and two officers came and pulled us out of the line asking us to show them our passports. We showed them our passports and then they asked us for a second form of ID! I couldn’t believe it! I pulled out my CA driver license, but my son who was 17 still didn’t have a license or CA ID. Luckily he had his high school student ID and they accepted that. I asked one of the officers if he pulled us out of the line because we’re Black. He said, “Oh no! We’re pulling out people who look like foreigners.” I said, “What about that blonde-haired blue-eyed couple up ahead who just got on the plane?” He didn’t answer; he just said, “We don’t discriminate in Mexico.” Then he asked me to tell my son (because my son doesn’t speak Spanish) that he wasn’t being racist (probably because my son looked so annoyed). Finally we were allowed to board the flight after everybody else had boarded. Everybody else had been seated already. Similar situations also happened when traveling with my mom. I told my friends in Puebla about it and they said not to take it as racism; Mexico just has to do the job the US is making them do, they said. I responded that it still means Mexico is practicing racism because I get treated differently based on my race. It’s never happened when I’ve traveled there with my White ex. Mexico can’t claim it is not practicing racism when it is clearly practicing racism. There are nondiscriminatory ways to check people’s papers.
yes many of the people do especially the border patrol agents in both countries who are genetically from Mexico towards people of African ancestry.. you have to research what they have been bombarded in their media for over 70 years. for example, an independent research was conducted unknown to the CBP agents at the lax airport and the investigators found out that the custom Border patrol agents at the los angeles international airport have a sworn eternal hatred usually abuse and harass people of African descent and they are 99 percent of Mexican origin
I'm Mexican and I'm ashamed to tell you that there's a lot of racism in Mexico too, people who are of European descend does practice racism against indigenous people, just the same as in the United States, and many other places in the world, black people and Mexicans are being profiled by white people, let alone the police, they think we are all suspicious of some illegal activities, Mexican authorities knows that American citizens are coming to the Country to get fentanil. and then crossing to the States because they barely got checked out by US customs at the border, so racism exists everywhere my friend, although in this case sounds more like profiling members of a community. take care brother.

Sorry to hear that this happened to you but it is in no way an isolated incident. I was traveling from Belize to Merida last December when I encountered a very abrasive immigration officer.
I was born in Belize but I am also a British national.
Crossing the border from Belize into Mexico, there was a HUGE back up in the immigration line to enter Mexico and only one person checking us in, a female immigration officer. A male immigration officer was walking through the office distributing the immigration forms to people in the line. Before he got to where I was in the line he approached me and asked, “Sir can I see your travel document” ? I presented him with my Belize passport and he continued issuing forms to everyone else. Now I must say, I am a very dark black man, and when I am in Belize or the Caribbean area I become even darker, we are talking Wesley Snipes dark. All the same, the other people in the like were all Belize Latinos or white Americans. NO ONE ELSE in that line if what must have been well over 100 people was asked to show any documents.
I waited my turn to get the immigration check in desk and, when it was my turn, the same male immigration officer was now helping his female colleague. I approached and presented my passport, he asked where I was going and how long I intended to remain in Mexico. His questions were more like an interrogation, very intrusive and his tone and attitude was very abrasive throughout. Eventually I produced my British passport and showed this to him without being asked and although his attitude did not change, the questions stopped and he stamped my Belize passport for entry into Mexico.
I had travelled to Mexico MANY TIMES before, coming from the UK as well as from Belize, but in all my previous visits, I had NEVER been treated like this, although I have seen other dark skinned Belizeans complain on social media about similar experiences in Mexico before.
So yes people, it is real and black travelers are being singled out for harassment when traveling to Mexico.

Profiling is dehumanizing. It stinks that you had to go through this four times just going to Oaxaca but I'm really glad that you figured out why it happened. How the Haitians and others are being treated, in large part due to the U.S. is sickening. I appreciate you for showing this.

Before I even finished watching your vid, I KNEW it was because they thought you "might" be Haitian. I first noticed this in 2018 when I went back to Playa del Carmen. I hadn't been to Mexico in a number of years, and was surprised at the changes. Because my Spanish is "good" (i.e. "proper") they couldn't identify where I was from. The minute I showed them my American passport, everything became different and pleasant... like the old Mexico I traveled to often, during the '90's. This happened at my hotel, and somewhere else. It wasn't until I watched another UA-camr during the pandemic, that I realized Mexico has a "problem" with Haitians. I went back to Puerto Vallarta in 7/21 and had a similar issue during customs check, and came close to cursing that man out in Spanish!! This year, I went back to PDC, but stayed on the resort and had no issues. Do you remember the African American family that drove from NC to Matamoros in March of this year, and was killed by gang members?? That happened because they were mistaken for HATIAN TRAFICANTES !!! This is so sad, especially since Mexico has ALWAYS been a friendly place for Black people to travel. I feel bad for Haitians fleeing poverty and death, but I wish Mexican officials would get cultural competency training, and realize that not all "Black" folks are the same!!
Yes, Haitians have a very bad reputation in Latin America, in Chile they have killed several Haitians because they have very aggressive behaviors with the local populations where they arrive. Of course, not all of them are bad people, but people like it generalize.

You can easily look up what problems immigrants are causing in Mexico. Haitians are being aggressive and destroying stuff in Mexico. they don’t have no right to enter mexico illegally, they want to came to United States and they when they can’t cross the border. so then what happens they stay in Mexico, and many of them just want people to give them stuff for free, free food fee shelter. and there’s wayyy to much immigrant in Mexico I google how many immigrants are in in Tapachula and there’s about 40,000 to 50,000 that’s to much immigrants in one city. Even Central Americans are complaining about Haitians. I see the news in Spanish. I get how annoying these guys are by being stop by the police because they thing their Haitians, but I don’t think it’s because of racism, why aren’t they talking about the problems that immigrants are doing in Mexico. it’s not Mexico fault of what their country’s do to their own people.

But not in all of Mexico just in the same regions you were both in. I really appreciate you making videos like these to help inform everyone of what really goes on out here in Mexico. Discrimination is a bit hard to avoid. It may not as overt as in the US we find that discrimination, colorism happen in many places. Don't scratch Mexico off your list just yet. There's lots of this country to explore. We're just shedding light on 2 areas.
I think you’ll have less of the blatant profiling and discrimination like you do in Mexico in places like Panama and Colombia. I am dark skinned single woman traveller and I have never been made to feel as unsafe as I did in Mexico from police or military. But you can’t escape racism in Latin America it was colonized and just like the US their structures and people I power are still in place. Also, Panama and Colombia has a larger Black population and you’ll enjoy their culture more.

If you guys came to Mexico believing it is racist free, Mexico has many people that you would call "racist", it is just not publicized. As someone that has lived in Mexico since 1997, don't let it get you down. THe USA is certainly not the only country that has "racist" people, they are found in EVERY country. As a Mexican that loves to see foreigners visiting our country, I am so sorry for the unfortunate experience you went through. I've been following your channel since you had like 5K followers and were roaming in Guadalajara (my hometown) and so sorry that your overall good experiences in my country have been tarnished due to the issues at hand.
However lately as you've learned, there's this issues with Haitian immigrants and unfortunately this has encouraged this kind of racial profiling. Not to apologize the attitude of the police officers but I think they're merely following orders of a governmental initiative as a response of the migrant crisis you've described. Furthermore there's also migrants coming from Central America whose last destination is the USA and some fit the same kind of profile. Regardless this kind of blatant profiling shouldn't happen.

I think you're right outside the airport and some scammer situations, Mexico is super nice and the people are super relaxed and helpful. But the conditions at the airport do give the impression of racism, although this may be a false impression. But it does stand out and if some group of visitors misbehave, then it is logical that actions are taken.

Hey guys, thanks for sharing your experience. When I was younger, I had a relationship with a anglo-american woman. When we traveled to the US, they checked her, and her bags with dogs and all the tools they have. I got kind of offended and she was so embarrased because they were getting her dirty undies and all out on the table! However, during that time American women were hooking up with Mexican guys and carrying drugs back to the US. That was a long time ago...But I know the feeling.

This recently happened to me in Merida going to Cancun. My daughter and I were the only ones stopped in the ADO terminal and then the bus driver checked out documents before we boarded the bus. No one else was checked. No one else was black either.

The same exact thing happened to me taking a bus from Tulum all the way to Chiapas. I was the only black person on the bus and they pulled me over every time and checked my documents and things. It completely changed my perspective. And to top it off on the way to California. I was detained at the usa border for an hour because I fit the description of a Haitian migrant

When my boyfriend and I lived in Merida last year, this is why I always grabbed our passports every time we headed out the door. Even just for a walk around the block. I knew they were looking for Haitian immigrants. We didn't want nooooo problems. Carry your passport at all times! We love Mexico.

If you carry a cell phone why not carry your passport. The US is making all holders of Drivers license in the to obtain a REAL ID for identification you have until January 2024 to get one.

I've been stopped, had my bags searched when returning to the US from Asia, one time missing a flight because they held me for so long. On another trip to China, an armed airport security guard accosted me, wanting me to go with him. My girlfriend at the time, grabbed my arm and told the guard "He is with ME!" The guard hesitated, then relented. My girlfriend had long blond hair. He did not anticipate that we were together, and he didn't know what do for a moment. He was probably wondering if we were actually together or if she was coming to a stranger's aid. I shudder to think what I would've been put through if I had been traveling alone.
I've traveled to Ecuador and Brazil and have had no problems with immigration, although the one and only time I had been to Mexico-- Mexico City airport on a layover, returning from Brazil-- security confiscated a tape measure I had in my carry-on bag. Otherwise, no problem with Mexico.
In some countries, smugglers face a death penalty for traveling with drugs. Knowing the prejudices of people, there's no way I would risk traveling while Black and carrying drugs. I don't do drugs and rarely even drink alcohol, yet, to some, I'm targeted as someone who does. I can understand the reasoning for this, but it hurts when it happens to you, for a physical quality you can't help. The officers have to follow certain official protocols but ultimately, it's up to the discretion of the individual who is acting upon their own preconceived notions of who is good or bad, innocent or guilty.
But... I'll risk it, because I love traveling so much!

On the phone I pass for Hispanic but as soon as anyone sees me they say gringo. The husband thinks it’s hilarious but we get overcharged everywhere!! We go eat and order a bottle of wine. Nice. Next time we go back they never have the same wine, only more expensive ones. Of course we always tip well. They are jacking the bill up because I’m gringo. I can’t prove it but I know it. It’s very sad how we are pre judged in this world. Sorry for your experience. But in the end I still believe most people are good.

Not trying to make light of the situation in this vid, but it's natural to be on guard when we encounter something out of the ordinary. Yes, it makes us feel uncomfortable when we’re labeled as suspicious, but we humans are pretty “paranoid,” and for good reason. It’s a survival instinct.

Sorry you all had to go through this. I consider myself to be a seasoned international traveler, but there are a number of countries where I would not be doing what you're doing as far as ground transportation. Mexico is one of them. There are some amazing towns and cities in Mexico, but then there's a lot of smaller towns in-between that are not so "tourist friendly" to black folk. I've traveled quite a bit in Brazil and never once had any issues. Having said this, I'm a fair skinned brother, so I don't want to dismiss that, as f'd up as I know that is. Good luck to y'all. Y'all just need to come back to Salvador, make that your home base and carry on. You got more views in Brazil anyway.

I've also taken 10+ hour bus rides between different cities/towns in Brazil, but since I have street sense and travel smarts, I don't stick out.

Hi Guys! Love your videos and thanks for sharing this update. I do disagree on one point where you state this is a Mexican problem. I feel its due to the current US open border policy which allows migrants safe passage through Mexico into the US. But I do appreciate your heads up on this issue and I will take notice on my future visits.
Just for context, I am a late 40s (dark skinned) black American man. I speak close to fluent Spanish and have traveled southern Mexico for over 10 years now. I've been through the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero (among many others). I was approached by and stopped by INM in the Acapulco bus station once and asked to produce my documents, but I understood why giving the migrant situation. NOT saying its right.
I do also feel Mexicans are not as familiar with how black Americans present themselves and they may incorrectly associate certain hairstyles (dreads) and attire with marijuana. It does seems the agents are focused on drug and immigration enforcement which is WAY better than the US where blacks are profiled randomly. Please enjoy Mexico because I would give ANYTHING to trade places with you guys as inner-city USA is NOT the place to thrive right now. Just my 2 cents.

I’m retired and spend most of my time in Mexico. I mostly travel by plane. I once took a bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, and then later to Tulum. They were short rides and the check points didn’t stop us. I stay in the resort towns, because there is too much drama outside them.
Good grief. I'm sorry you had to go through that interrogation. (Nobody wants to deal with the Real problem: Haiti is out of control.). I can imagine you two settling happily in Oaxaca...it's the cradle of democracy/liberal life in Mexico: Something I think a lot of people do not consider when they move to Mexico: local politics, ie. Merida is conservative Christian (but I still love it & they have a lg enough Lebanese population to keep it in check).

I am a "white" British man and this kind of profiling often happened to me while travelling in Europe in the 60´s. The reason for this is I was young and had long hair.

During the WWII era, the peak time of the following situation, each of the European groups of people was considered a different race!! The English couldn't marry the French, the French couldn't marry the Germans, and so on (but there have always been exceptions). We need to study history in depth. Nowadays, what we learn comes mostly from pundits who almost never reference history and put things in an historical context. We are so ignorant, often causing us to get upset with things unnecessarily, considering circumstances have often been much, much worse. Of course, lets continue to call out abusive treatment wherever we find it in the hope that things will improve going forward.

I really want to visit an Afro-Mexican community next time I'm down there. I am a "Blaxican"-Black father, Mexican-American mother-and I think I've met maybe 2 or 3 others like me in my entire life.
Okay. I traveled through beautiful Mexico by bus from Tijuana to Mexico City. The bus that I was on was stopped four times. However, I did not have my passport. What I did was pay a bribe (not recommended) because the officer pulled me off the bus, checked through my luggage, and then I guess felt bad. I truly did not know that the passport was not required. However, I did have my US driver's license. At each checkpoint, I paid $20 until I reached Mexico City. In Mexico City, I found someone to help me get a Mexican passport (I do not advise doing this today). I continued my travel into Belize City. I recommend that you always have your travel documents. But know this... these officers do not usually make very much income. And often, they are looking for a bribe. If you find yourself being stopped often, do not think it is because of your skin color or race. More often than not, it is because they know that you are from the U.S. and have the ability to kick them down a few shillings. I was told by a fellow passenger who was from the U.S. but born in Mexico, that I could have given them $5. and that would have been sufficient. At the end of the day, I felt solidarity with these checkpoint guards; donating $20. so they can feed their families and continue to keep the roads safe, was an honor for me.
Cool, interesting perspective...but donating is a choice. If I don't have a choice it's called extortion. I don't like being extorted in a country that I'm visiting.
@@TheYarbros We are extorted every day in the U.S. and we never realize it or refer to it as it really is. The big difference is that in Mexico you know your money is not going to fund wars or oppress smaller countries. A famous Muslim scholar said something like, You can change the name of a thing, but it does not change the substance of that thing. You pay according to your status in life. Compared to most Mexicans, we enjoy a much higher status. Therefore, if I can pay a little more, I feel honored to do so. BTW, I loved Mexico and compared to the hazards or dangers of being Black in America, I choose being Black in Mexico any day. I recently made the boldest move by ditching the US. I am jobless and free at last living in Saudi Arabia. I hope never to return to the U.S. except as a visitor. P.S. I love watching you both. You both are an inspiration. Hang in there and do not be discouraged. BTW, I do not think you look Haitian. Lol.
@@TheYarbros I totally understand. A person who looked out for me at a time when my life was on the line, gave me the best advice ever. It was simply, "Choose your battles carefully." Les Brown once said, "Don't sweat the small stuff, and everything is small stuff." I want to update Mr. Brown's saying and add "Everything is small stuff outside of the U.S.". Be safe and be well, brother and sister. I am on your team. I am trying to find a permanent home country, so I can permanently quit America. The reason why in Chiapas they ask you for documents is because it is already the border with Guatemala and many people come from Central America and Haitians, same thing happens in the USA, for exemple San Diego and its surroundings there are checkpoints for immigration agents.

The immigration issue in Mexico is bad, there are also a lot of Hatians and Africans in Mexico City. The US government needs to step up. The other borders have been wide open for Ukrainians.

We moved to Rosarito Mexico, myself my daughter and her kids. My daughter is Hispanic her kids are mixed with black as soon as my grandson turned 18 he bounced. He was constantly pulled over here in Rosarito Mexico. He is a beautiful young man and they never left him alone

First time I went to Mexico I did not speak spanish but the second time I went I learned to speak spanish fluently. it was more enjoyable and i realized that the Mexican people showed me mad love and Im dark skinned lol.

I noticed at the Mexican Airports that immigration has not singled me out to do a thorough search. However, last year, I took a bus from Hermosillo to Tijuana, and immigration singled me out at a stop I believe was in Mexicali. I showed them my documents that I was American. But I was somewhat harassed. Besides that, everything has been ok.
The guy from the video saying Tapachula is hell, is well known for being a migrant recruiter. He has an agenda and is being paid by US related "social" groups.
He was actually charged for human trafficking but then let out as a lawyer paid by God Knows who, won the judgement arguing he is just helping the poor.

@@TheYarbros sorry, but the guy in the video at 9:40 sounds like an alarmist. I t doesn’t seem like the undocumented migrants are in a ‘jail’ or in a ‘camp’, that sounds ridiculous. It is probably a complicated situation especially when a lot of the Haitians are not coming straight from Haiti, but rather South America.

It is more than the Haitian migration. Over 10 years ago when there was no Haitian migration, I was traveling back home from Ensenada. I was driving in a line up to the toll booth. I paid my toll and was immediately pulled over. They searched my truck and kept asking if I had a pistol. That was the last time I visited Mexico. I have changed planes there but I would advise my worst enemy to stay away from Mexico. They are being nice to you because they think you have money. Underneath that friendly exterior, they hate you. Check out theMexico's favorite comic strip Memín Pinguín. That in a nutshell is what they think of black people. Their police and military are all linked to the drug cartels. So if you get into trouble, you are on your own. Just don't go to Mexico.
Hell you can stay right here in the US and be discriminated against.

Although this doesn’t ruin your trip/travel, it’s very aggravating to deal with this type of thing after spending money on flights and accommodation. I can get this treatment at home. I don’t have to spend thousands of dollars for it.

Well, there goes my interest in traveling to Mexico. I don’t have the patients for being discriminated against so obviously. I know the people are not like that. But, just the same, it makes for a very nerve wrecking experience because they could do anything to you and you have no say. I can get discriminated here in the States for free and not have to pay for it!

Im a darker skinned Asian American and almost every I go to MX outside of a cruise, they search me intrusively at the airport, festivals and clubs. At Zamna in Tulum, they were looking through my shoes, every item in my bag, and asked me to pop my phone cover off. Disgusting treatment when Iam paying Dubai prices in a 3rd world country.

As U.S. born Mexican American and having been to Mexico back and forth since i was a kid it's not surprising to see this. Its a totally different culture i don't care what people say about the friendliness and beauty of it. The government is going to do what they want to do and your rights go out the window. If they know your a foreigner at some point your going to get treated different thats the reality. Even myself that can blend in easily will get treated the same if circumstances occur if i had to identify been from another country. My advice is don't have expectations that it's the same being in Mexico. It's unfortunate you guys experienced that side of it. Safe travels. 🙏

Come on, that's literally nothing compared to what happens in the U.S. People I know personally, and myself. Pulled over and written a ticket for speeding when we weren't speeding, beat up and dropped off in an alley, drugs planted, arrested on fake charges. How many unarmed people have been shot by police? Thousand examples caught on video all over social media. It sounds like a valid reason if Mexico has an immigrant crisis. In the U.S. it's purely hate and jealousy. The most times I was bothered by police in the U.S. was when I had a white girlfriend.

No, it's not. We are currently in one of the most beautiful and extremely diverse areas, Oaxaca. In fact most of MX is open and friendly.
It's not the people. Even most of the gov't workers show in their mannerisms that they don't want to profile people, and they will do all they can to help you. I'd rather go through this in Mexico than here in the US, because I never feel like it could be an end of life experience when I'm there. Don't let it stop you. I live in Monterrey, MX and travel back and forth to Austin, TX. As soon as I drive across the border, the feeling of freedom hits me... The US is a dark, dark place, and I only knew it was so bad when I started traveling. Mexico is an amazing place and the people never cease to amaze me. I could tell you so many wonderful things, but you should find out for yourself!
