Nope. She doesn't feel connected to the country she previously lived in and is running away instead of making sacrificial changes to bring order to that society again. Now she is repeating the same thing as her relatives in America. This is the opposite of cultural connection. This very thing is what has brought havoc to NY and now this havoc is like a seed that has been planted in Serbia. Now let's not even talk about the the fake Serb who brought this into his country.
Considering her husband is serb there is of course a slight bias maybe. But also at the same time id say lot of serbs moved back from canada/usa because of the same reasons...maybe its intuition we have that somethings off and everyone acted on it. The transition i can say is not that easy but humans are adaptable and youre better off at the moment in former Yugoslav countries than in lot of western countries.
@@stefanfreestylez of course, I have a bias. I'll always defend Serbs to a reasonable degree except when it's against my own morales. I have both logical and spiritual reasons for coning here. I sort of followed my instincts and so far I think they have served me pretty well. Serbia and the rest of the Balkans have a lot of heat but I've been through hell and back, a few times, so I can handle much of the struggles you might think would break me. I'm in the game. I picked my piece and I made the best move I could.
@@stefanfreestylez of course, I have some bias. Regardless of how it seems from these conversations I have a lot of great bonds with many people in Serbia. This nasty display of disrespect is pretty new and a reflection of rising frustrations. It's easy to raid the thin woman with glasses if you want to unleash your fury with minimal consequences or effort. It says plenty about those particular people and how badly they need to hurt others. Evil exists. Move accordingly.
@FormerlyNYVulgarian....why, honestly, did you leave New York? You could have gone to another city, I would give anything to go to America. I have visited Europe and the best are the northern, cold countries, although now Tram... wants something that no one has ever wanted from America .of the president hmmm???
@@anaaleksandra-nenic unfortunately I’m stuck here but I’d love to live abroad. I agree with her statements on the current NYC. It’s nice to live here if you’re a millionaire which I am not unfortunately. Truth is it’s hard for average working Americans to earn a living comfortably. Also the law isn’t upheld strictly here so we have a bunch of crazies and potentially dangerous mentally ill people attacking citizens.
@@FormerlyNYVulgarian If you are now when people rebelled, to write like that, then ok, otherwise BG is expensive, but I don't believe it is as expensive as New York. Lisa, you are an intellectual and you know that some intellectuals, especially those from the West, unconsciously create distance from other people, they are cold, while Serbs are very sociable and warm people, but not in an intrusive way, here neighbors know each other, visit each other, help each other, so relax, everything is okay, we love you. Try learning Serbian, it would bring you very positive experiences. Welcome to Serbia!
Thank you. I was always introverted so it's ok. The culture shock and differences make it a little harder. I have been self studying Serbian for years. But you really need company to talk to in order to speak the language. I sound like a child so I say as little as possible. I am working on it.

This will change if migration continues as it will be seen and felt as an obstruction in our culture. We can handle some of them. But when they grow too many it will be impossible like in the West. I have seen this first hand when I worked in Sweden for 6 years. We must stop this. We have our own diaspora globally. Time to bring them home! We don't need a million Americans, Africans, Syrians, Arabs etc. Also think about when all of them are going to bring their relatives. And then they have 5 children per family. Demographics will change. As I said. This must be stopped. And this is NOT racism!

My son just returned from a tourist visit to New York, where he stayed in Manhattan for 12 days. It was very expensive there, he says, much more than it is in Belgrade. He's well off enough to afford everything but after a few days he simply did not want to buy, for instance, sandwiches for $ 12, incl. of tax and tip. You pay tips for practically everything now. Belgrade is becoming more and more expensive, but nowhere near New York.
@@MikeArg-hp9ho If you take into account the house-rents, cost of public transport, communal and other services, and health care, cultural and life-style differences (role of parents, relatives and friends, for instance), as well as how the force of law and regulations is implemented, Belgrade is still considerably cheaper than New York. There is no way you can support yourself or your family on 1000 dollars a month in NY, while it is an average salary in Belgrade relatively easy to get by on.
Cool lady. Welcome to our city 😊, from a Belgrade woman who always dreamt of visiting New York and never did, and now I don't even know if it's the same city I dreamt of when I was a teenager.😢

You are so lucky, although I'm sure it hasn't been easy for you but I'm sure it's been so rewarding to grow and broaden your horizons like you did. Bless you and wishing you the very best.
I want to be honest. It's 50/50. Some days I feel so lucky to have escaped when I did. I know that a lot of people want out. So I am grateful for the advantage. But I am cripplingly lonely out here. I cry more than I'd like to admit and I struggle with severe depression. I don't think I made the wrong decision but I feel like I had to sacrifice my happiness for security. Tensions in Europe are high right now so really do your research to find the most welcoming and safe cities. I would start to look sooner than later before the rush of Americans trying to flee gets overwhelming. If you need any advice feel free to ask. I'll do my best to help 🫂
Alex- always enjoy your channel and the guests you interview are articulate, insightful, and honest. Good work! I’d love to see you in the other chair… when will you tell your Life in Serbia story? 😊
The explanation of 'inat' is overly positive. It's really more like, when someone offers you help, but you refuse and die, because they had insulted you a while back.
Inat is best described as "instinct of freedom"...instinctive reaction against imposed rules or aggressive authoritarian approach. Serbian history is filled with struggle against different invading forces and we payed enormous prize for our freedom...I guess over the centuries of turbulent history rebellion became part of our instinct.
It"s true and we are one "small"nation who very often in history wanted to show up that we were capable of something 'great". But "inat" is the wrong word because it's connected to the complex of inferiority. You shouldn't do things to prove something to someone generally....
@@ana-t But it is a combination of all negatives and positives. It starts as marginisation and complex of inferiority. Ends with unmatched resilience and defiance. And like everything in nature, one must take both and outgrow it.
As a native and lifelong New Yorker, i don’t necessarily agree with what Lisa has said about my city. It’s from her subjective viewpoint that NYC has lost it’s panache or soul. To the contrary, the city offers tremendous opportunity for those in creative arts , business, health fields, culinary, trade , and virtually any endeavor of pursuit to create a successful career and make a healthy life here. There are 5 boroughs comprising the city and within each , one can choose to call home. I concede that it’s not for everyone but this is my perspective and i stand by it, true to words.
Hi there! I'm glad you're still loving life in NYC. Maybe you live somewhere protected. Only the wealthy seem unmoved by the current state. My opinions are subjective but it can't be just me since most natives have left and are crying the same story. Almost all my friends jumped ship. Why do you think they're saying our accent will be extinct in a generation? The cost of living alone is impossible. Everyone is residing 10 heads to a tiny apartment with strangers. A slice of pizza is almost 4 dollars now. Infrastructure is unkempt and filthy. That's not the NYC I knew. It used to ooze art, spirit, and community. At least in Astoria. What parts are you from, may I ask?
@@LisaFromAstoria Hi Lisa..thanks for responding. I hardly live anywhere protected in NYC. Actually, i live in the Inwood section of upper Manhattan, in a pre war, non concierge/doorman building, within a rent stabilized apartment. I ride the subways each and every day , give guided tours of the city , occasionally, and shop at Trader Joe's frequently. Looking around town, "most natives" are still living here among the boroughs. In fact, peoples are moving here for culture, employment and doing business. At least those are some of the reasons i get having met some out of state residents who've elected to relocate to the Big Apple. The cost of living is higher in some areas of the boroughs, i concede that, but if one knows where to shop, one can lower the cost. I also concede that your city is less expensive and more likely safer than here, overall, but NYC , has superior medical facilities, educational and cultural offerings than most anywhere else in the world. Not "everyone is residing 10 heads to a tiny apartment with strangers"..You know that's not true. Infrastructure , meaning public transport, IS unkempt and filthy...that's TRUE. Everything and everyone changes with time. With all due respect, time moves faster than the speed of light and before one knows it, one has become a senior citizen +. I hope you're preparing for same financially and health wise. Where will you get the best medical and dental help, when seriously needed? I'll take NYC's hospitals ( or other Big City American hospitals) over any out of country hospitals , every day of the week. Anyway, i do wish you all the very best of health, happiness and success in your life.
Lisa, I believe people were more intrigued and curious about you rather than viewing you as a "character." From the perspective of a Belgrader, we primarily see people as individuals rather than as a specific category. However, of course, there are cases that show otherwise. I'm glad you feel at home in Belgrade, and I hope it stays that way forever. ❤️
Nothing wrong with that. I'm pretty curious myself. It's my inquisitiveness that kept me returning and learning about Serbia. Thanks for the welcome. I hope all is well.

Most of Serbs don't argue publicly because things we can say to each other when in heat is not for everybody's ears lol, it's best to keep those conversations for home.
Nenade, što sereš? That's not at all why we don't argue in public. We value our culture and how we present ourselves to eachother because cherishing our kin is what enforces value in our culture and strengthens our connections to eachother. We Serbs are much closer to eachother socially than other cultures. MUCH closer! Our social values are salient because everyone puts in an effort to sustain them. Part of being a Serb is not only being a representative for freedom but also holding a hospitable nature and welcoming warmth. However, this hospitality and the energy that is connected to it, might be at risk of becoming depleted as the normalization of migrants continues into our country. I and many Serbs hold that after a certain threshold is passed in terms of migration, the cultural change is inevitable as it negatively changes our culture that we have cultivated for so long. This is called "racism" in the modern world of political correctness and has absolutely nothing to do with real racism that was experienced in the United States for example. There is a global political trend aimed at obstructing what sovereign nations and their cultures have experienced as a homogeneous culture for centuries and that national identity is being eroded in order to advance the shaping of global institutions which are much easier inaugurated when national identity has been broken down.
@@LisaFromAstoriaYes, did you know we in Serbia are targeted to be exterminated from the face of the planet by being poisoned with the worst air and water in the world even though we don’t have any industry working. Cancer rates are the highest in Europe too!

In the stark economic landscape of Serbia, a narrative of fiscal turbulence emerges, where the cost of existence transcends mere numbers and becomes a visceral testament to economic volatility. The extraordinary financial pressures reveal themselves not just in statistical projections, but in the raw, unvarnished reality of a nation grappling with inflationary challenges.

Now the area is a haven. It's amazing how quickly it happened 😁
@LisaFromAstoria omg me too! I didn't know anybody or anything about serbia. But we definitely knew about Greece, ha ha. Especially living in Astoria. They should go and get a dose of reality. It's not like on film. Most New Yorkers lived surrounded by money and fancy buildings but had little except high bills and a wicked case of insomnia. People don't want to move to NYC. People want to be rich and fancy. Trust me, it's far from the same thing. But what do I know?
@@LisaFromAstoria yes, yes, i know, i am aware of that. But basically ppl just want a big change in their lives. It became boring living for years and years in the same country surrounded with same people/mentality. That is happening because of globalisation and digitalisation.

@LisaFromAstoria Hey Lisa, thanks for the honest conversation about Serbia. I wonder if you’ve ever heard of the word “polako” (take it easy) for any task, personal or professional. What do you think about it?
@@VodeniZeka That is exactly what 100 % of Western cultures said about their own cultural uniqueness before mass migration. Then politicians were changed. Bribes were paid. NGO:s were established. Media started pumping propaganda. Attitudes changed. I worked as an investment manager in Stockholm for 6 years before moving back to Belgrade, and I saw Sweden's major transformation in terms of cultural and demographic shift. Swede's themselves experienced that they weren't living in their own country anymore. The Swedish children growing up with multiculturalism as a normal thing. And now these so called Serbs want to call people racist for protecting our culture with ZERO of their own experience of what negative consequences these societies face with after mass migration. Just don't be a racist! There already are enough foreigners in Serbia. This madness has to stop. We have our own diaspora to bring home!
Propaganda is on its maximum for westerners to move into Serbia but they don’t tell you about the worst air pollution in the world? They don’t tell you of the worst cancer rates in Europe?
It's not propaganda. It's part of my life story. Please stop being so shallow. There's no push to listen to this. If you have a problem with foreigners coming to Serbia, have that same energy and go complain on the posts of those openly advocating for that.
Thanks. I'm glad for that. The US is going through a lot and it's likely to get worse. I wouldn't recommend anyone move there until things cool down, if ever. Serbia has its issues too, but things that I've learned to handle. If you are thinking of leaving the Philippines do as much research as possible on every destination. Travel and visit. And please don't listen to anyone selling a dream for a fee.
Thank you so very much for your response. I was delighted to hear from you. I can empathize with you on how it must feel isolating and such a culture shock being in Serbia. I was born in NYC, first gen son of immigrants from Cuba. Back in 1989, I went with my wife at the time on a tour of Spain, Portugal and Morocco. I absolutely loved Spain, since I know the language, I didn't want to leave. I felt so much at home. Now it's my dream to return and never come back. I think it's a great advantage and less of a challenge when having similar cultures. Globally, things are getting tight for migrants. The EU is now starting to implement ETIAS visas even for Americans and Americans are applying for the US passport in record numbers never before seen. How ironic should hordes of Americans begin to flee from Trump's America in great numbers only to be shut out at foreign borders. Thanks again.
No problem. I'm really excited when Americans reach out. Sorry about my last message. I'm having one of those low days. But usually it really is nice being somewhere new. I don't even mind the culture shock but it's not easy being around people who aren't happy. It's contagious and quite the case in Serbia. Yea unfortunately Europe is having huge problems that will definitely affect others if not via the opportunities to settle in other countries but the sentiment of the natives regarding foreigners. For example prices have tripled here. And there is a digital nomad movement causing real complications. I guess how much depends on how bad things get. But it's already dividing people. I am a journalist and I have been trying to talk about the expats and migrants crisis for years in Europe but US media doesn't cover it and Serbian media is fluff. Now things are happening exponentially. And there is still limited coverage. That's why I did this interview to try and get an honest conversation going. Hopefully it will lead to a bigger discussion in Serbia but that's doubtful. It seems like every country is in decline but if you're lucky you can find a cute city to hide away. I'll really miss the US, for what it was. It'll never be the same in my opinion. Canada and the UK have fallen. We aren't far behind. I think there is a one world agenda so it didn't matter who won. Well it does but you know what I mean. The end result is the same. Maybe one road is just easier than the other. I'm so nervous for after the 20th. I cant imagine there being no uproar. People are begging for an excuse to war. I didn't get the chance to roam LA. I'm still searching for nice American and Australian towns just in case I have to run again but the best spots are probably occupied and I have no idea where that could be.
@@bmc868 I guess considering its size I wouldn't say the air quality is fresh but I don't remember it being too bad either. Maybe I was used to it. I'm from Astoria. Right by the river. It's the noise pollution that I don't miss. I didn't realize it was so loud until I went back after a while. I'm glad I grew up in such a special place.

She sees social things and changes correctly, years before they happen. A very smart person.
I try my best. Thank you.
It says plenty about those particular people and how badly they need to hurt others. Evil exists. Move accordingly.

Star box coffee in Manhattan is 10 dollars to go. No sit down and drink take and go
If you take into account the purchasing power there, NYC is at least 3-4 times cheaper than Belgrade. Belgrade became rip off city.

The explanation of 'inat' is overly positive. It's really more like, when someone offers you help, but you refuse and die, because they had insulted you a while back.
Very smart lady. Great interview.
It's in your bones.
@@ana-t But it is a combination of all negatives and positives. It starts as marginisation and complex of inferiority. Ends with unmatched resilience and defiance.
And like everything in nature, one must take both and outgrow it.

Normalna i pametna zena.

Lisa, I believe people were more intrigued and curious about you rather than viewing you as a "character." Most of Serbs don't argue publicly because things we can say to each other when in heat is not for everybody's ears lol, it's best to keep those conversations for home.

I wonder if you’ve ever heard of the word “polako” (take it easy) for any task, personal or professional. What do you think about it?
No problem. I have. I hear it often. But no one really tells me that. I'm usually pretty chill ☺️
God bless you, enjoying Serbia’s beautiful country
Will more westerns moving there speed up the way of life there as they try to compete like they do in the west?
like Californians moving to Texas not integrating and slowly molding Texas into what they had left
Oh God I really hope not, that would truly be terrible in my opinion.
Yeah good luck with that, we Serbs really don't like to be told what to do or how to do it
@@VodeniZeka Srbija će uskoro biti crnja od Konga.
@ Yes, we all have a problem only that the rest are asleep for now. Wait and see until you truly get to know us. The same way we are to each other.
@@JoseBoy-ve5kbhow much more do I have to go through to know Serbs better?
Really inspiring story! Would love to stay there rather than the U.S
Greetings from the Philippines. Thank you Lisa
@@horatioguderian4694why did they move there? That would be important.
Ma divno!
From New York to Serbia. What a change!!!!
That it is.
@@LisaFromAstoria That's good. New York is a tough city and the quality of life is very low.....if you are not a billionaire.

Thank you for coming to Serbia. I wish you had lived here before the war. It was a divine place to live. Much safer. As for fighting on the street,of course you shouldn't fight in the street. First, it is bullying other people. Why should anyone listen to an argument? Second, a woman should be a lady and a man a gentleman, and ladies and gentlemen should not argue in front of others. They should solve all problems when they are alone. .

Razmisli malo....

I think being the character of the place you are camming from is kind of a curse for every foreigner in a place like Serbia that is not a melting pot of cultures.
She brings sassy proud black woman energy. Get woke wayward serb XD
New York i Boston su tipa nasi gradovi. Komso odma preko ograde pita sta ti to radis.

Hvala!
I appreciate the engaging video! If I may, since you are using multiple cameras, I would recommend a brief course in cinematography/deiting. It could really help avoid any cringing moments caused by poorly timed camera shifts and angles, thank you.
Još nam samo oni fale ovde, pa kada pređu 5% populacije da krenu da divljaju kao u SAD i zapadnoj Evropi!
Misliš na one stotine i stotine hiljada Srba što je SAD pustila da Živi u državi?
