- If Taylor Swift is the new Eddie van Halen, then I'm the new T-pain. That's how much sense that statement makes.

Mylie cyrus is the next Rick derringer
I'm just gonna say that it's bullshit this comment only has 2 thumbs up at this point.
Shameful
Miley Cyrus is the new Mother Theresa
Selena Gomez is the next pope.
Miley cyrus seems like a female marilyn manson to me. (If you think about the history and looks of both xd)
Marilyn Manson? Did'nt she used to play in the Yardbirds??
drake is the new John Lennon.
Oh, that hurt to say.
peter a freaking stab to the heart 💔

Wrong in so many ways
To hell with you, heathen!
Cardi B is the next Freddie Mercury
great video! I loved it. I feel you are spot on and I loved it even when you boosted my chops. Your points were dead on.
Lol! Glad to see you have a sense of humor Phil. In all honesty I am really happy that there are more ladies getting into music, and damn happy you're helping educate the youngin's. Keep it up dude \m/
And btw, feel free to bust my chops back haha. Turnabout is fairplay online :P
I Luv Ya Phil But this Guy Has a Funkin Point (LOL) and you gotta admit he's pretty funny without being to insulting....Ha Haaaa

Taylor swift makes you pick up a guitar and play but Eddie Van Halen inspired people to learn the guitar
\m/
JaPowey Amen! It make me wanna jump... sorry.
JaPowey this is true. i can't diss Phil for making this statement because when I was 13 and so into Taylor Swift, I wanted to play guitar like her and so my dad bought me one but I never really leaned how to play it. But as my music taste expanded discovering artists such as EVH, I am more inspired to learn the guitar for the sake of making music rather than wanting to be like a particular artist
JaPowey there's one thing Eddie can halen can't do is....singing and playing at the same time.
@@lukeGGlee and Taylor swift cant play a masterpiece like cathedral or eruption. No words in either song yet both are better than tswift's career
I could care less about being able to buy a pink guitar or a t-shirt with a stick figure in a dress. It's insulting to insinuate that girls are so shallow that they think about appearance over function. But, as a woman with very small hands, a scaled down guitar is way more practical.
Thank you!
agreed :)
Somebody ran out of whiskey.
DivineTra
Lil Wayne the next Yngwie Malmsteen, for damn sure. That Lollipop solo he did just melted my fucking face with his ungodly technique and feel.
Eddie Van Halen didn't just inspire people to take up guitar, he made the guitar heroes of the day not only stand up and take notice, but re-examine their own approach to playing the guitar. I can't imagine Joe Satriani or Mark Knofler putting their guitars down and dissecting a taylor swift song...
I'm sure they would...so they can put in a crazy mad solo in there somewhere
Eddie Van Halen was basically the white Jimi Hendrix. He re-defined what the guitar could do, influencing many to start playing. He came up with his own technique and style that made a legacy, and every guitar geek looks up to him.
Taylor Swift plays the same four chords... a chord progression SHE DIDN’T EVEN WRITE.
Sorry millennials, but Van Halen wins by a landslide.
I played a D chord! I'm the next Joe Satriani.
With the 6th string muted lol
Phil was waaaaaayyyy off. Justin Bieber is the next Eddie.
Bahahahaha
Great video
Thanks man! Idk if you watch his channel but he does a lot of great vids. They are typically very educational................what he was thinking with this one......only he knows. And Guitar Player was only too happy to pick it up. Why they didn't choose any of his other videos to feature.........it speaks for itself how off this situation is.
Lil Wayne is more EVH than Swift
Oddly enough I can buy that.
medbad5150 I have heard him solo to lollipop. And he actually does a solo with soul on par with eddies soul power.
I am the 69th like
"Fucking piece of ass!" I lost it 😂😂😂
I'm Marty Friedman
No you're Hannaan Ahmed
Julius Sw No you're Julius Sw
No I AM Marty Friedman
Hannaan Ahmed I like my chips Friedman
Im chuck schuldiner
im not a big fan of reaction videos but at least you ad something to the video 👍👍
The Puertorican Beast Jonathan Ayala He is the model of what a reactor should do.
The Puertorican Beast Jonathan Ayala stop douche man im actually puertorican
I think what Mike is doing is actually trying to educate people. This is what ALL reaction videos SHOULD be. I mean, if you don't have anything special to say, why say anything at all?
I can downpick MoP, i'm the next Hetfield.
His point wasn't that she is as good as Eddie, or even in the same vein. Basically he is comparing the level of inspiration. As an instructor he has noticed a trend of girls getting into guitar because of TayTay like boys did in the 80s because of Eddie. Yeah, it's kind of a clickbait title, but he makes his point.
I can see that whole side of things................still doesn't make me any less salty about the comparison haha. But thank you for at least being civil.
I was going to post the same point, it is certainly lost on this ass clown and most of the people who commented here as well.
Phil McKnight's title was totally click-bait. I fell for it (more out of morbid curiosity) but did not watch the entire thing. So what if more girls are picking up guitar.... how many of those girls are asking for shred lessons versus basic stuff? I'm not trying to be sexist, I just don't see a necessary correlation between more girls taking lessons, and the next Van Halen therefore being a girl. Regardless, I think it's great that passion or interest in learning guitar has not completely died among the younger generations.
I'd kind of have to agree, as a female who plays guitar, for the first couple years I only learned basic stuff on an acoustic. I started in fifth grade. That's an age that I really didn't know much about music besides what I heard on the radio and what my parents played(luckily it was some pretty good stuff like guns and roses and Nirvana). At the beginning of 10th grade I bought an electric guitar and started to learn much more complicated an exciting stuff, because I wanted to be like the musicians I had found on my own. I found the drive I was looking for, and in the past six months, I've probably learned more than the previous two years combined. I certainly can't really shred yet, but I'm much better. What girls are really lacking is an example that they want to follow, and a drive to do well. As soon as you have that then you can become much better, but almost every preteen/teenage girl has no one that inspires them, because they've never been exposed to good complicated music.
I would rather pick Orianthi.
Not an innovator but her guitar playing is brilliant, and she probably can play all Van Halen songs.
On Taka nah dude, Orianthi fuckin sucks, just look at her beat it solo, she's overrated af
Orianthi is a way better player than Eddie Van Halen. I think she is the new Jimi Hendrix.
Her songs are really bad but her playing is awesome, I'm a girl and when I started learning guitar I was feeling so sad because I thought I could never do it because of the fact that I'm a girl, and I found Orianthi and I was like "well, if she can do it, why can't I?"... not my favorite guitar player but it is inspiring
I'm a girl and Iron Maiden makes me want to pick up a guitar and learn. Taylor Swift makes me want to jump off a bridge.
Taylor swift was definitely NOT the reason I started playing guitar....wtf.
I mean I started with classical guitar but still, I started playing because I was forced to in my middle school music class, and I liked it so much I continued privately.
I did'nt know Taylor Swift played lead guitar. Wow.
Good point
I had to like this before even watching, the title says it all....... Face Palm.......
Honestly, I get that having female representation in music is great and might inspire other girls to get into music but I've never heard anyone saying that Taylor Swift made them want to play the guitar. Of course idk every kid on earth, but it seems so weird to me. But I'm glad those girls are interested in music - it has been such an important part of my life, especially my guitars.
I also agree with you about those first pink guitars (like, the ones he praised are the same as the ones he criticized, about the stick figures (especially because not all girls like skirts or dresses? lmao) and how hard it is for women to be successful in the music industry.
Yea I don't know any girls that picked up a guitar because of T-Swift, but I also don't talk to many teenage girls lol! I'm kinda taking Phil at his word on this. Thanks for watching \m/
Become The Knight We have to attribute the higher # of female guitar players ....and female musicians in general to something and I believe artists like Swift help rather than hurt the situation. While I might cringe when I hear a TS song at FIRST......I think about the alternative and that's being inundated with yet another Drake, Lil Wayne or Kanye West. I'd rather have my kids listen to Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift than all the shitty hip hop and (c)rap that's being forced down music fans throats....which is the #1 reason why the US isn't a ROCK nation as it once was. For this reason we need to pick our battles and who we ally ourselves with in the battle to bring rock and METAL back to the forefront of the US music scene.
Become The Knight My sister and I were inspired to pick up the guitar after listening to bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc. Girls can be inspired by guys too.
"O.M.G I loovve Taylor Swift so much, she is such a good guitarist"
She can play the same shit she does on a guitar with 3 frets.
Most pop stars don’t know that stuff exists past the 4th fret
a mate of my dads has been gigging with a daisy rock and hes a 62 year old bloke, rock on
Fuckin A \m/
Become the McKnight!
Haha! I dig.
I love Phill's channel and I had the exact same thoughts as you did when I watched this a while back.
Hahaha Great Video!
He actually does have a great channel. I was more just being a dick for the sake of being a dick. Happy you enjoyed it \m/
Grace Slick, Ann and Nancy Wilson, Joanie Mitchell, several others from the 60's and 70's may have been sex objects but they were rockers who could write and perform damn good music. What we have today are mostly women/girls who are being promoted by the industry because of their sex appeal or showmanship. They are often supported by much electronically enhanced vocals, choreographiers and large cast of session musicians.. This also applies to males, but to a lesser extent, I think. Comparing Taylor Swift to Eddie Van Halen makes about as much sense as comparing him to Justin Bieber.
7:03 nice pamper box 📦
Damnit!! I knew someone was gonna notice. Now, if you knew what was in that Pamper's box.........then you would literally be saying, "NICE Pamper's box!"
I have really tiny hands and small fingers but I have no problem with my guitars. I have an Mille Petrozza ESP signature and while its really heavy I love it. It plays so well.
Rest in piece Eddie Van Halen
Simple, how often do you hear "My major guitar influence is Taylor Swift" and "My major guitar influence is Van Halen"?
MY daughter wasn't looking for female guitarists. She was looking to the lefties. For her and I being lefties have been much more of a hold back for us in all life, but also in music. The only thing it has ever been an advantage is sports.
So I wonder, could you devote a video to discussing left handed guitarists, how the sound is different if they play upside down or restrung, and maybe rank your top ten lefties and the solo or song that put them there?
I may be a bit late, but there is a video by Loudwire that has a video on the subject. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/QdIblD9-ACI/v-deo.html
Ps. Full disclosure one of my best friends/competitive rivals was always very critical of my playing... but totally perplexed as why people thought I was "better" as in normal listeners, consumers of music. He thought I was "sloppy". I thought he had no "feel". We debated this countless times. For me vibe was first, for him precision. To this day I believe ultimately the magic comes from the overall effect holistically rather than some sort of isolated analysis. It's damn difficult to create that magic, far more so than relentless pursuit of precision.
just came across your video, literally after watching the Phillip McKnight video you're commenting on. good video. At first I thought you were missing Phillip's point, but after watching all of your video, I get it. you are more accurate that Phillip is comparing Taylor Swift to "one thing" that Eddie Van Halen did.. which is bringing guitar interest to kids. Comparing her to Eddie is actually an insult to Eddie as he is way more than just someone who got kids interested in guitar.
btw, couldn't help but think of Corey Feldman. . similarities, also couldn't help but wonder just how many beers you had before filming.. LOL
anyway, like I said, good video.
totally 100% agree with you on the T-shirt situation.
I HATE it when people ignore the females in rock/blues/punk (Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry, Amy winehouse, Etc) and replace them with trashy pop stars (Madonna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Etc)
I love Joan's voice and guitar playing. She rocks.
I didn't think she could play anything but a radio.
He's just talking about how she's inspiring young players. Of course she'll never have his skills, well, unless she takes intense lessons for the next five or more years, then she might get close.
Eddy van Halen playing dreams made me want to play guitar.
What do you mean, they don't know any better? It sounds to me like they do know better. IF being "better" is picking up an instrument to better yourself by learning something different, does it matter who they attest that action to?
If someone told me that they started playing guitar because of Taylor Swift, I would at first laugh, but then I would seriously ask them why? And I think you guys know why. I say have respect for all musicians even if you don't like the music, it's still music and music is a universal language.
I appreciate what you're trying to say here and it is admirable. But the problems go deeper than simply, "I don't like it." I don't agree with the statement "all music is good." No, there is such a thing as bad music. Not all music is created equal, and you do your fellow man a diservice by telling them the shit they crank out and call "art" is as good as Beethoven.
This isn't to say we shouldn't encourage those who are less talented or less experienced to work harder and get better, and praise them for the good they do. But Taylor Swift and other pop stars like her encourage musical mediocrity and send immature messages (or sometimes downright evil) to their audience which tends to be teens/preteens. I have a very real problem with that. Killing culture from the roots up...
Also, Taylor Swift is more accurately described as a product than a musician...
Am i the next van halen? I also breath, eat, piss and shit and am a male. That is 5 things in common. More than taylor.
I feel like girls wanting a guitar because of someone like Taylor Swift is like when I wanted a bass because I listened to Korn when I was young, but then once I got good enough at it and actually noticed most of the basslines were just muted slaps and pops, I moved on to learning better things then eventually made my way to technical guitar. Just because Fieldy probably got a bunch of kids to pick up the bass (which is still good) doesn't make him the next Victor Wooten.
wow, modern feminism took over the guitar world now? 😂😂😂 but i understand what phil did there, he has to cater for them too. which is sad, really
for that pink guitar and logo, at least
You can't ever escape it I suppose haha. But yea, Phil did make some good points.
its up to you, but i think its way funnier if you dont beep out the cuss words everytime
I am in total agreement with you.......but let's just say I have certain viewers who I cater to...
This how I want my videos to be kick back cold beverage in my hand relaxing on my couch
W.T.F. is this Dude Really Corey Felman ?
i think the perfect body image is a wonderful thing too! :D
(yes, i know what you meant, but i wanted to make this joke anyway)
He seems to be unaware of the Ibanez Mikro series - 3/4 size, pro quality guitars and basses, not available in pink. My wife bought a gorgeous red bass, which I happily steal on a regular basis (bad pun) as it's better for some things than my full size instruments.
-They said they like Taylor Swift...
-They're obviously kids who don't know better.
"Fucking piece of ass" xD That made me laugh so much
My guitar heroes are Eddie Van Halen, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Slash, Brian May, and Steve Lukather.
NOT TAYLOR SWIFT!
lol i'm wearing a pink shirt today, i swear, this shirt has been laying around for years and i hate it. But i failed to do my laundry lol. And watching this just seems too coincedental lol :P
I'm 13 and Eddie Van Halen was the reason I started playing.
thank you for reading my mind and putting it on video
No word has been said with such force since Leonidas said, " This is Sparta!!". That NO killed me... XD
0:57 (my favorite part of his reaction )
I find the fact some guitars are made smaller and pink just "for girls" simply offending. My older sister plays Black Metal on a black and red B.C. Rich Warlock.
The pink part maybe. But I think there is value in making them smaller for people with smaller hands in general. I've had several friends of mine who are women and complain about not being able to get their hands around the neck well.
10 seconds in and I already love how chilled he is
As a male. I want smaller scale guitars so I can use them. My hands are... non existing.
TAYLOR VS EDDIE
* Taylor was raised with wealth. Eddie was raised poor
* Taylor is a dance pop singer. Eddie is a rock musician
* A guitar to Taylor is just a tool to write songs. A guitar to Eddie is a extension of his body
* Taylor spends 2 hours in her room playing. Eddie spends 24 hours in his room playing
* In concert Taylor changes her clothes 10 times. In concert Eddie never changes his clothes
* A band to Taylor is hired people to play with her. A band to Eddie is dealing with the headache name David Lee Roth
* Taylor goes home to cats. Eddie had cats chasing him on tour
Saying Taylor Swift is the next Eddie Van Halen is like saying Frank Sinatra is deathcore.
He didn't mean that she was an amazing guitarist, just that she made a lot of people want to play, just like Eddie did in his time.
Well, what should they do to make a universally accepted female silhouette figure? Give the silhouette boobs? What about women who are flat-chested? It's such a no-win situation.
I agree, It is pretty much a no win no matter what you do. Although, I had considered just giving the silhouette long hair, since most rockers male or female have longer hair.
Just a thought.
Become The Knight But some don't. I guess it's just an impasse.
By the way, I agree with you that the TS = EVH comparison is off-putting in terms of talent/skill level, even if their level of influence on people picking up the instrument is comparable. It's not that she doesn't have her own musical achievements... but, _come on_, right?
0okamino No I know exactly what you mean. That's kinda why I had a problem with it in the first place. "Why don't you have a shirt for girls?" The proper response, imho, should have been, "But isn't this one for girls?"
Yea that comparison was a little extreme haha. But Phil did make some great points in his video.
Become The Knight No, that shirt is for bald silhouette men. For instance, Alfred Hitchcock if he played guitar. ;)
If women are generally cool with that silhouette representation, I'll just take it with a grain of salt.
So, is Orianthi the new Steve Vai?
0okamino Lol!
I will never forget, Eddie got me into playing guitar and playin to the max. I love that guy and always will. Taylor Swift influencing women to play guitar, great. If only Taylor Swift can play like Eddie, it'll never happen.
Taylor Swift DOES do a lot of charity work and fan-service...but, she gets a LOT of publicity for it, so I can't bring myself to pat her on the back for any of that. The constant attention for her "good deeds" makes it seem like it's all self-serving publicity.
I dont quite see how adele is still forced to be sexualized by the music industry, could someone please explain?
3:40 Haha, I get it. The kitchen. sliiiiiiiiiiick.
3 years later, Eddie is now rolling in his grave over that....
Rest in peace EVH 😓
Nice work bloke. I stand behind every word you spoke (even the 'almost spew' lol. Yes she has her fans and her demographic and blah blah blah but the only time she should be compared to EVH is on The first day of April ). I am musically inept (however I can sing beautifully if no one is listening) I can barely play 'Hot cross buns' on the recorder but can appreciate and respect when an individual can do extraordinary things in his or her field of expertise. (praise be to Sir Hendrix) Sure Taylor is heaps better looking than Ed but anyone who has a 'hint of a clue' knows that they are not playing to the same audience. (If Ed could take 'hot chick, pop star classes I'm sure he would do a flock load better than Taylors 'guitar melting' lessons). If we could all express our opinions as calmly and respectfully as you did (also complimenting and giving Kudos when warranted) the world would be less of a mess. Extra kudos because it was after you had a couple of pints of 'liquid opinion' which often sends people on an egotistical bullshit rant). Like this Ha. Is that Irony? I've had too many litres of 'liquid opinion' to know.
I’m 15 right now and I’m living in the peak of Taylor swift and I can say she is the last person that made me pick up a guitar😂 it was Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoades
A contributor on "Metal Sucks" actually wrote an op-ed called "It's Time to Stop Thinking of Women in Metal as Women in Metal." Well, good luck with that. I really think it's besides the point of trying to ignore the gender of musicians, as it will never work. It's sort of a fundamental part of being human. I think instead the important thing is a long-term project of changing the cultural meanings that are used to understand women who are part of the heavy metal scene. As for women in rock/metal and sexualized representations, I think probably the major thing is how much of that is a conscious decision by the artist and how much of it is driven by the labels. If it's self-directed, fine, but if it's being imposed on female artists, that's another thing. Rock music and sex are pretty deeply intertwined, so I think it would fundamentally change the genre if you were to try to overhaul that.
what are you drinking?
Holy shit...... just found you subscribed
Gonna reword what Phil says... "Is TayTay a person who gets young people inspired to play guitar... like EVH did?"... Why, yes, Phil, yes. But... the question is fkn stupid.
My dad laughed when Mike said NO! And said "is that even a question?"
the new marshall "22" Taylor Swift signature model heavy pop amp.
I clicked on this video for the same reason I clicked on Phillip's, I was intrigued by the title. Now I'm not a fan of TAYLOR SWIFT, but I am a Big fan of EDDIE VAN HALEN, and my first thought was maybe this girl has a talent that I was not aware of. But all I found was two dumbass videos that I got tricked twice into watching. The fact that I'm commenting on this just shows you that I have nothing better to do on a Friday night_lol:)
Lol I hope you don't feel "tricked" but I do respect your candor. I made this vid because his comparison slightly pissed me off, specifically because it degraded what EVH did for the guitar playing community. I reserved completely ripping him a new asshole because he actually made some good points in his video. But I can see why you may have felt jipped.
Sorry if you felt this was click bait. Regardless, I appreciate your viewership \m/
Just messing with you guys, I understand completely why You made this video, My bad, I really have nothing better to do tonight:)
Bob22260 ^^
@Bob22260 so what...... He is right anyways......
im a guy and my hands dont wrap around the neck lol, i had to buy a gibson sg cause its a bit lighter for me and smaller
"If i look at that shirt and i see a stick figure, i see person."
I think of pearl jam
I agree with you on this James hetfield inspired people to pick up the guitar and so did prince, Brian may, Steve vai, David Gilmore, Jimi Hendrix, Slash, jimmy page and Tony iommi but it doesn’t mean Taylor swift is the next one of them
They're talking about young kids that respond to the symbol just as their restroom symbol. It's not gonna cause anymore gendering than is already happening. I would market the "dress thing" to girls so young that they don't see it as anything other than basically a heirogylph.
Little girls don't need explicit gender-neutral bc they're already gender neutral by default. They haven't and don't really process gender enough unless they have highly-restrictive parents, but those aren't the parents in the demographic of his students.
But not for any girls older than... 9 or 10 bc they're about to encounter puberty and the very obvious My Body Is Not The Same Like At All, And Not Just In My Between-Me-Down-There... He should have a separate imaging strategy that is more about female agency than female inclusion, bc they're gonna need that backbone so they don't sexualize themselves to get their feet in the doors.
Synyster Gates is the next Eddie Van Halen🤘🤘 (please don't kill me)😂
That's still a far better comparison than T-Swift
For all you guys making snarky comments you DO realize guitar sales are DOWN over the last few years. Guitar Center,Sweetwater and Sam Ash are having financial problems....Sales are down for Gibson, Fender and PRS. Anything that brings new young players into playing an instrument is a GOOD thing. If your ship is sinking you don't piss off the one person that can save it.
If Taylor Swift is the next Eddie Van Halen then Lil Pump is the next Biggie Smalls.
Guys will be guys and girls will be girls and it’s not easy to get rid of these stereotypes
Also, Eddie inspired people to play guitar 🎸 because he was amazing and Taylor inspired people to play guitar because she’s popular. There’s a huge difference there
Nice shirt dude
for what it's worth Phil also owned a retail store but sold it because his UA-cam channel was causing issues with his suppliers but I think he still runs the academy
I started playing gutair because of Malcolm young from ACDC
I had a champagne pink Barrington guitar back in 88. What about Nikki Stringfield? She can actually play.
Cardi B is the next Randy Rhodes
My girlfriend's cousin is actually an actress and knows Taylor Swift. Cause of that my girlfriend's family have actually met her a coupe times her grandparents say she's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet so there's that at least.
I know people in the industry who've worked with her who say VERY much the opposite. But both of our pieces of info are merely anecdotal.
I'm a dude but I've got a coral pink fender
Those 8 kids will regret their words... Let them grow up.
Who made you pick up a guitar?
Metallica
Honestly, quite a few artists. Metallica is one of them, as well as alice in chains, bucket head, sabbath ect.
if she is the nxt eddie van halen then adam levine is the nxt jimi hendrix..
I actually watched one of his videos once for a pedal review. He seemed okay then
Hmmm, I agree with ALL of your comments and just wanted to add a bit from a perspective of a reasonably accomplished guitarist -- as in played since I was 7 and EVH then RR made me obsessed with upping my game in my teens and playing live and even thinking I might have a shot at the "big show". Fast forward, I have three daughters, all of them wanted to "play guitar" here's the rub. It's not the pink, it's not the size, it's none of that. After a month all of them just did not have the tenacity to do it, to put in effort and time. Trying to pretend that there are "obstacles" that are somehow gender specific are bullshit and at the end of the day as you should recognize (being even remotely self-aware as you claim as you dismiss history as if everyone already knew what was being invented - which you do recognize here and there). I had FAR FAR more obstacles and my desire overcame them. Hell, listen to Jeff Healey now tell me how colors, size, and gender are obstacles. Fuck that, JH is fucking awesome (was, thank goodness I got to see him live in TX before his death) not on some bullshit scale of allowing for his obstacles, just the fact that he's fantastic period full stop. Stop promoting that there's some sort of lopsided playing field. You either do it or you don't and if you don't it's nobody's fault but your own. Done.
