ACDC have heavy roots in the Aussie pub rock scene, which is why they were never worried about being technical masters or creating out there music. Their main audience were drunks and people who wanted to party, and they stuck to that formula to this day. That's also where the 'oi's came from

Here's the thing with AC/DC: they basically represent everything that pure rock n' roll is. Rock was never about the technicality of the music, nor about how sophisticated the lyrics are. Rock was always about showing the struggle, playing dirty music and making you feel good. You could say Chuck Berry and Elvis were repetitive, but they were still great for Rock N Roll. That being said, I am not a massive AC/DC fan and I agree with most of Mike's points.

Slipknot does, but the early Manson is kickass. Funny thing is. My mom thought the music i listened to as a kid (25 years ago) isn't that good (Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer etc). And now later on when i've played the same songs to her, she likes them xD
For those about to rock isn't even one of the better songs, too cliched, that's what made AC/DC different, when Bon Scott was singer they made songs about picking fights and pulling women
The international release of High Voltage had quite a bit of diversity. For example, how many other of AC/DC's songs had a bagpipe in it? The first guitar solo in Rock 'N' Roll Singer has a rare bluesy feel to it.The Jack is a slower song riddled with poker innuendos, making it the first truly raunchy ACDC song. Can I Sit Next To You Girl is also unique due to all of the staccato notes going on. The pulsing bass intro in Live Wire does a good job of grabbing the attention of the listener, and then the chords build upon it.The tom beats during the chorus are what make this song unique, as this was the first major use of tom-toms by an ACDC drummer. High Voltage has a simple chord intro, but what makes it unique is the funky guitar backing during the verses. The outro of High Voltage also does a good job of showcasing Angus' abilities. It's A Long Way To The Top, Rock 'N' Roll Singer, and High Voltage also have a surreal novelty to them. They were earlier songs about them getting their big break and whatnot. Then we move to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.. Squealer is a unique song due to the groovy and original bass line. ACDC also had another futuristic song It Ain't No Fun (Waiting 'Round to be a Millionaire) Foretelling a future of wealth. This song is much more lyrically centered, which is why it is unique. The album also features Ride On, a slow blues tune The Let There Be Rock album was when things started getting similar. however their songs were still distinct. The title track is a powerful driven song. The Bass and hi-hat rarely relent, and with three amazing guitar solos, it sets the stage as the opening track. Dog Eat Dog is a fairly simple song, but the banging toms along with the lyrics of ruthlessness make it interesting. Look, I could spend forever writing about all of the Bon Scott era songs. All I ask is that you listen to the entirety of all the International releases of High Voltage, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Let There Be Rock, Powerage, and Highway to Hell in the name of appreciating music, Bon Scott died before his time was up. Also, I like to think of Bon Scott's voice in a similarity to M. Shadows. They're higher, and more nasal. Those whom truly enjoy hearing their voices have a refined sense of hearing and musical taste.
Reynold Adamson um so tell me is back in black a pop song? or shoot to thrill or t.n.t. or black ice or stiff upper lip or play ball or rock or bust or she's got balls or high voltage or shot down in flames are any of those pop songs?
AC/DC is pop rock? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh dude, get yourself a proper musical education in Australian pub rock, please. AC/DC are about as "pop" as they are Beethoven.
Do you realize that AC/DC uses the same 4/4 drum beat for most if not all of their songs.Don't get me wrong , I really like AC/DC. As a matter of fact, I listen to thunderstruck everyday so much that my neighbors broke my window with a brick to hear it better😉😉😂. But in all honesty, their songs can be a bit redundant.
What AC/DC doesn't get credit for is that they mastered the art of writing an opening riff. How many AC/DC songs can you identify in less than 5 notes? Or less? Thunderstruck, You Shook Me All Night Long, Hells Bells, Back in Black, ... I can't think of any other bands who pull you in right from that first note. If only they know how to end a song.
As an AC/DC fan, I love your comments on this! You put so much thought into what you say and I like how you don't just choose one side and refuse to accept anything else. AC/DC are just a bunch of cheeky mates, making loud, catchy songs that totally capture the spirit and essence of Australia, especially 70s Australia. That whole 'give no shits and have fun' pub culture, nothing deeper, and they know it. As an Aussie, I don't know anyone who takes them seriously or who would say they're trying to send a message beyond "shut up and rock." I know your culture over there has always been very different from ours so I can totally understand why you don't like them. Either way, they've introduced a heck of a lot of people to rock, which is great! If you ever find the time, you should check out some of the stuff from their 1979 Let There Be Rock Paris concert movie, it's super entertaining. Keep doing what you do, your videos are awesome! \m/
Okay, let me rephrase that. The pop music of hard rock. Also, what has Journey even done that has become famous besides a couple of songs? Boston seems more reasonable, but Journey isn't even popular enough to justify it. Even though a lot of people know Don't Stop Believin' that doesn't mean they know any of their other songs.
Werewolf211 Journey had more hits than just Don't stop believing, and all the people I know sing along to don't stop believing whenever it comes on. Also, I cant even think of any other Boston song besides more than a feeling, that I've heard, but I know they have had more hits. I'd consider Journey a household name, same as ACDC. Though, that's just my opinion.
There have been interviews with AC/DC in the past, and even they admitted that they are not the most technically proficient musicians, but you can’t fault AC/DC for their incredible live performances, and that great classic rock tone they get out of their Marshall amps.
“They say we keep doing the same stuff, but rock and roll’s been around since the ‘50s, I mean we’re a rock and roll band. There are a lot of pretenders out there... We feel we’re timeless. I mean, trends come and go and we’ll always be moving through the trends, sometimes we may do really well, sometimes maybe not so well. There’s really nowhere else to go 😂” ~ Malcolm Young, AC/DC VH1 Behind The Music, 2000.
See I find it the other way for AC/DC to you, I like them because all their songs are simple and similar and when I saw them at the end of 2015 they killed it live even though there were technical difficulties. They're a band to listen to and have a good time and have a few drinks.
+Geoff Prince yes sir AC/DC does not need to be flashy they stick true to them selves there no sell outs angus could out shred anyone if he had do but he doesn't because there is no feel. AC/DC IS TRUE ROCK N ROLL
I found your channel about a week ago and I gotta say Mike, your videos are thoroughly satisfying to watch. I never thought my favorite channel would be from a metalhead reacting to fine bro videos while drinking beer. Lol, anyways, keep up the great work!
One time me and my couins went to a car convention or something and when we got in we heard Back in Black loud AF, then Highway to Hell and then Sweet Home Alabama, we were super pumped, then they played them again, then again, then AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND FRICKIN AGAIN, AND AGAIN! We ended up not listening to AC/DC or Lynyrd Skynyrd for like a month...
Ac/Dc's music is just them feeling good and making stuff outta it. They don't overthink their music, they don't care about production, they don't care about success. If it sounds good to THEM, they release it. That's why their music is REAL.
Alexander Kundert I honestly want to try and learn how to play left handed as well... that way I can play with both hands :D.. it'll take a while to adjust but I'm already pretty decent playing right handed, I wonder if I'd be any better playing left handed, definitely want to try that sometime. You don't have any problems with intonation flipping the nut around and what not?
Navysealsnake nope, the intonation is straight on my strat. Beware you might have to move the strap thing to the other side if you wanna play standing up.
wanna tell u smth. Umm i was typical 18 y old european teen who listended ''basic music'' -Drake -some trap rap pop and stuff.. But u dragged me in to the ''rockstuff'' not talking about acdc, im talking about hardmteal aswell! Thanks Mike. U inspire me!
AC/DC just makes catchy music. The music means basically nothing, but you can tap your foot to it and it makes girls dance, so of course they will be liked.
Oi is an english word, similar to "ahoy". It's used in countries like England and Australia to get someones attention, it's basically a one syllable way of saying "HEY, look over here/listen to me"
I think Angus is a legend, and I think that ad/dc I WAAAY more then just a party band. Because it's not just how many notes per second you can play, it's about combining the simple things in a way that's not over the top and that gives of a good sound. And Bryan's singing has a special kind of rock n roll pump feeling. There songs do sound similar but not the same they happen to have A SOUND that people can identify with AC/DC.
One thing you also need to know about AC/DC is a lot of songs in their catalogue are related to, or are all about sex. Big Balls and You Shook me All Night Long in particular make even WAP look like Barney and Friends by comparison.
I know this is an old video but watching you and your opinions has given me a new outlook onto the genre and the subgenres within it. Your points about AC/DC are COMPLETELY valid. while I am still a big fan, I can totally see where you're coming from, the truth is almost all of their songs were dipped into a vat of redundancy, repeating the title for the chorus repeatdly
You said it yourself why AC/DC are so great - so tight, so loud, so much emotion. And that's how you build a 40-year career on doing the same song over and over :) Just pure rock n' roll, no bells and whistles required.
I admit that when I heard Flick of the Switch for the first time, I would hum it too myself and then constantly get it mixed up with Given the Dog a Bone.
I agree with everything you said, however, I enjoy AC/DC because they harken back to the basis of Rock which is the blues. That simplicity can be enjoyed. And I am a composer and vocalist, a music theory major and someone who loves Dream Theater (pre-Mangini days).
When i first listened to their discography i heard the first album and hoped that they would learn to sing, then listened to their last and was sad that the guy lost his voice, then listened to every album and realized that neither were the case, it made me sad to know i would have a week or two going through it for my music crusade, boy am i happy its over with.
AC/DC is just all about having a great time. Who cares if it all sounds the same, it is so good. They just focus on having a great time and make people happy. I respect your opinion bro.
The whole "oi" think is a way of gaining attention, it's common in the UK, Australia and New Zealand: shouting "OI" at someone is usually aggressive, but can also be passive. Depends on the tone
Angus Young is pretty amazing considering he's like 5'2" and can barely reach the end of the neck. Blues repeats a lot. AC/DC is blues-influenced rock. Thus, AC/DC repeats a lot. It's a different form than something like metal, which takes a lot of from classical melodies. But yeah, their entire thing was going hard and making songs about rocking out and getting laid. They did it better than just about anyone in history.
James Hetfield was better when younger. Saw a video of Metallica way back in 1989 and his quality and range were much better than most of the ones released after they became famous.
I will say James isn't a singer at heart he is a guitar player and a pretty damn good one too. So yeah I agree he isn't the best singer but there songs kick ass.
I would be interested to know what your top 10 bands/artist are, particularly for the 80s. there are some things that leaves me to believe you dont know much about the bands themselves. personalities, skills levels, traits, why they do certain things they do. Angus is a damn good guitarist, so is his brother that kept them all so tight on rhythm guitar. there are many documentary cuts talking about the band and specifically Angus. he would get home from his school in that school boy outfit and start to practice/jam on his guitar bouncing around on his furniture. the rest of the band would show up to get him and he'd have time to toss his guitar and amp(s) into the back and go. but his hyper-ness and the outrageous-ness helped him deal with performance anxiety which he fought with, but if it helped him the band never stopped it. it put him into a mindset that he could just rock out. HE STILL DOES IT! it wasnt for stage flare or anything else, not a gimmick, it was honestly him. now AC/DC is not my number one band. but they do fill an essential spot in hard rock/"light" metal. and angus for having small hands for playing guitar did an amazing job. btw "Oi" is a british/austrailian thing they say. not 100% what it means but is very common to them so it does not surprize me one bit to have it come through on one or more songs from those countries. personally I HATE Rush not as individuals or artists, but purely their music, but give them their props for being influential and will not talk down their skill as "artists". they probably were great, but I recognize they just were not for me.

Geralt Wolf Slipknot and Marilyn Manson kinda suck though, just my opinion.
Slipknot does, but the early Manson is kickass.
Funny thing is. My mom thought the music i listened to as a kid (25 years ago) isn't that good (Maiden, Megadeth, Slayer etc). And now later on when i've played the same songs to her, she likes them xD
Geralt Wolf you're practically right they basically did the same thing their parents did to younger generations I agree with your statement
HuNtErSkIlLz YES!
For those about to rock isn't even one of the better songs, too cliched, that's what made AC/DC different, when Bon Scott was singer they made songs about picking fights and pulling women
"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheep"
"I think I'm gonna go down."
Nope!
James Geiger TLDR yea high voltage maybe their best album, or LTBR
I think the reason they say "Oi" in the sounds is because AC/DC are an Australian Band and in Australia they say "Oi" alot. Trust be, im from there
Yeah I agree. AC/DC is just a band that brightens your day so to say, but without it being a happy, shitty unoriginal fake pop song. Just good rock
rey1jj So if a song is happy it's shit?
But AC/DC do make shitty unoriginal fake pop songs.
Reynold Adamson um so tell me is back in black a pop song? or shoot to thrill or t.n.t. or black ice or stiff upper lip or play ball or rock or bust or she's got balls or high voltage or shot down in flames are any of those pop songs?
AC/DC is a pop rock band, so yes, they are all pop songs.
Android Robot
Lmao 😂😂😂
Actually they don't the beat in highway to hell has I more hit on the kick drum than back in black
It's the classic rock n roll backbeat the genre derives it's name from.
Honestly I like Brian Johnson’s vocals but I’m no expert on it but I prefer Bon Scott’s vocals
YES
Same
R.I.P. MALCOLM.
AC/DC is the pop music of rock, that's why so many people like it. It's simple, easy to digest, and it is loud.
Werewolf211 I feel like you could give that title to Boston or Journey
Okay, let me rephrase that. The pop music of hard rock. Also, what has Journey even done that has become famous besides a couple of songs? Boston seems more reasonable, but Journey isn't even popular enough to justify it. Even though a lot of people know Don't Stop Believin' that doesn't mean they know any of their other songs.
Lots of people know other songs by Journey. Faithfully, Wheel In The Sky, Separate Ways, Lights, and more
The only Boston songs normal people know are More Than A Feeling, and maybe Peace Of Mind
"Really fricken kickin..."
-Become The Knight
"If you want blood, you got it" ROCKS!
There’s really nowhere else to go 😂”
~ Malcolm Young, AC/DC VH1 Behind The Music, 2000.
I am surprised how you don't spill your drink when you move your hand around. 😂
Called being a professional \m/
All hail the all mighty professional! *bows and headbangs at the same time* \m/
It's a technic you developed through the years in the pub
Clip Burpton he did lol. At the beginning
Adriano Barbosa do you mean a technique?
Kids react to Led Zeppelin anyone?
Creekchaser 911 please
Queen?
Led Zeppelin FTW
Rammstein would be nice though... :D
Creekchaser 911 pretty sure they'll do Pearl Jam next coz of Rock n roll hall of fame
See I find it the other way for AC/DC to you, I like them because all their songs are simple and similar and when I saw them at the end of 2015 they killed it live even though there were technical difficulties. They're a band to listen to and have a good time and have a few drinks.
Harry I agree mate, I went to there concert a couple of years ago. I'm not a big fan but shit it was the best concert I've been to.
+Geoff Prince yes sir AC/DC does not need to be flashy they stick true to them selves there no sell outs angus could out shred anyone if he had do but he doesn't because there is no feel. AC/DC IS TRUE ROCK N ROLL
@@johnnysymmes7807 Lol that is big time bullsh*t. Tell Angus Young to outshred Paul Gilbert or Buckethead
The fact that they were high as hell when they recorded their albums most of the time has something to do with it.
People hate on AC/DC cause they use the same chords every song, but angus young is an insane guitar player. His solos kick ass
I found your channel about a week ago and I gotta say Mike, your videos are thoroughly satisfying to watch. I never thought my favorite channel would be from a metalhead reacting to fine bro videos while drinking beer. Lol, anyways, keep up the great work!
I never thought I'd be reacting to FBE videos while drinking beer. So you're as surprised as I am lol! Thanks dude \m/
He's not a guitar god but he is a FUCKING MONSTER
Andreas Wong he is a guitar god
Become The Knight: I hate ACDC
Become The Knight: THIS SONG FUCKING ROCKS
He said he is not a fan and liking 1 or 2 songs dont make hím a fan
POLITICALMACHINE 1010 How about you watch the video to hear his reasoning.
To be a fan, you gotta like at least a few of their albums, like the whole album. Not just the hit on that album
I love AC/DC. You cannot go wrong with Thunderstruck, Back in Black, Highway to Hell, or Shook Me All Night Long.
My favorite AC/DC song is (not a big fan but they are like b tier for me) it’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll
Epic AC/DC song, it should be Australia’s national anthem.
Nirvana Record sold :100 million(give or take a few). AC/DC : 200 million (give or take a few).
Lol! One of the big problems with the music......not their own merits, but how much they are over played.
Succesfull because they're tight.
Tight because of Malcolm Young
= Succesfull because of Malcolm Young. R.I.P.
Ac/Dc's music is just them feeling good and making stuff outta it. They don't overthink their music, they don't care about production, they don't care about success. If it sounds good to THEM, they release it. That's why their music is REAL.
the funny thing is the dude singing thunderstruck was actually the bands limo driver
Left handed people rule! It sucks that lefty guitars cost a lot more and are harder to find.
Alexander Kundert leftys rule
Alexander Kundert I'm left handed but I learned to play righty... I'm a walking contradiction :(
Navysealsnake I tried right handed but when I flipped the strings and the nut on my strat it felt natural.
Umm i was typical 18 y old european teen who listended ''basic music''
-Drake
-some trap rap pop and stuff..
But u dragged me in to the ''rockstuff'' not talking about acdc, im talking about hardmteal aswell!
Thanks Mike. U inspire me!
hardmetal*
Lol! I'm happy I could help you expand your horizons \m/ Thanks for watching!
living MAD suomi manittu, torilla taavtan!
AC/DC just makes catchy music. The music means basically nothing, but you can tap your foot to it and it makes girls dance, so of course they will be liked.
Oi is an english word, similar to "ahoy". It's used in countries like England and Australia to get someones attention, it's basically a one syllable way of saying "HEY, look over here/listen to me"
It looks like Angus Young still wears his uniform from back in school
I understand your points given. Still a fan of them, and I'm okay with that.
Thank You! 🤘
they make the same song over and over again. They're basically pop rock.
Ben but their songs kick some ass! 🤘
AD/DC
Is NO one gonna talk about how much frickn beer he has in his mug?!
One thing you also need to know about AC/DC is a lot of songs in their catalogue are related to, or are all about sex. Big Balls and You Shook me All Night Long in particular make even WAP look like Barney and Friends by comparison.
highway to hell is litterally about a actual australian highway
Now I can listen to it without feeling like I'm committing a sin against God. 😀👍🏾
“He’s like, a really good singer”
Mike: what is she on?
I’ve heard “the hits” over a million times and I will never know the lyrics. But I will always know the title and the lyrics to the chorus
"because it's frickin thunderstruck man" should be a t shirt
I know this is an old video but watching you and your opinions has given me a new outlook onto the genre and the subgenres within it. Your points about AC/DC are COMPLETELY valid. while I am still a big fan, I can totally see where you're coming from, the truth is almost all of their songs were dipped into a vat of redundancy, repeating the title for the chorus repeatdly
You said it yourself why AC/DC are so great - so tight, so loud, so much emotion. And that's how you build a 40-year career on doing the same song over and over :)
Just pure rock n' roll, no bells and whistles required.
I admit that when I heard Flick of the Switch for the first time, I would hum it too myself and then constantly get it mixed up with Given the Dog a Bone.
I don't trust anyone that dosent like acdc.
I agree with everything you said, however, I enjoy AC/DC because they harken back to the basis of Rock which is the blues. That simplicity can be enjoyed. And I am a composer and vocalist, a music theory major and someone who loves Dream Theater (pre-Mangini days).
It's not the most complicated music but some of their hits just never fail to get me pumped up and dancing
When i first listened to their discography i heard the first album and hoped that they would learn to sing, then listened to their last and was sad that the guy lost his voice, then listened to every album and realized that neither were the case, it made me sad to know i would have a week or two going through it for my music crusade, boy am i happy its over with.
"senseless screaming" sounds like metal
I wanna hear react to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits or SRV
Lazar Ristic react to the who
Ooo! Love me some SRV
They have yet to mention how Angus young is like 3.5 ft
Thank you, I'm here all week
AC/DC is just all about having a great time. Who cares if it all sounds the same, it is so good. They just focus on having a great time and make people happy. I respect your opinion bro.
The whole "oi" think is a way of gaining attention, it's common in the UK, Australia and New Zealand: shouting "OI" at someone is usually aggressive, but can also be passive. Depends on the tone
Aww, got a soft spot for Little Squire and Natural Lefty?
Totally haha.
Whilst Back in Black is a great AC/DC song/album, it was not their best work.
Have a listen to Powerage (1978), arguably AC/DC’s finest work.
FYI the oi is an Aussie thing hence the phrase Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi
In the song TNT, they aren't saying, oui. They're chanting, Fight.
Oh man, rewatching this video made me laugh so much.
15:56 Oh God i thought you were going to say something different for a moment.
My problem with acdc is that after 15 albums it gets REALLY old
because the 15 albums are the same album
AC/DC was the first band I had ever seen live, 12 years old, $5 to get in, Bendigo 1975.
6:30 omg I died, that reaction to that perfectly timed statement was beautiful XD XD
You can't tell me ACDC vocals are ass, James Hetfield isn't a great vocalist either.
Can’t compare coz
1) Two different genres
2) he does both vocals and guitars at the same time. And not to forget, he’s known as the downpicking god.
Love AC/DC to death man, no clue what your on
I would be interested to know what your top 10 bands/artist are, particularly for the 80s.
there are some things that leaves me to believe you dont know much about the bands themselves. personalities, skills levels, traits, why they do certain things they do.
I think it's his persona, cause snobs tend to ignore real facts and just go off their opinions...
Just because he loves guitar doesn’t make him a great guitarist
Angus young: I hate it when people say, that we did 11 albums that sound exactly the same. We actually did twelve that sound exactly the same.
"Our success is due to the taste of the public." - Bon Scott
