When asked what is my favorite Led Zeppelin tune, ......I always say, "why the first two albums of course."
First six albums for me.
To me, and for many different reasons, Led Zeppelin will probably always be my favorite band.
As Jimi Hendrix with say are you experienced, Zeppelin twice in my lifetime, even today at 73 years old when I hear Zeppelin I get up and groove oh yeah
Zeppelin did songs where each of them got a chance to shine. They improvised a lot in live performances and Bonham was actually told to follow Jimmy who was the band leader. JPJ and Bonham worked together well.
Layers and layers. The genius of Jimmy multitracking guitars, vocals … JPJ’s performance is a personal favorite here, among many.
Man, you have really come a long way in your Zepplin knowledge! Remembering your first reaction, you didn't even know the names of the band. I feel you are well on your way to being a journeyman. Love it. There is a Jimmy Page clip on YT as a kid playing guitar, he was talented early on.

Top 5 is hard. And it seriously changes because their range is massive. It depends on the day and my vibe. At the moment: #5. The Rain Song, #4. Kashmir, #3. Dazed and Confused, #2. No Quarter, #1. In My Time of Dying. But it seriously ebbs and flows. I think most fans will say that, they have such a lot of high quality tracks to choose from. 🎸🎶💯
He's a fan of the rhythm section... and JPJ and Bonzo were WORKIN the groove in this track. He'd probably rate "Good Times, Bad Times" or "Bring it on Home" right up there as well.

I 100% get what your saying about the ebbs and flows... it just changes based on the season, based on the environment, and based on my mental health. It also changes based on the version of the song, or where it was played. My top 5 in the car is completely different from my top 5 to just lay on the couch with headphones on.

Did The Lord Of The Rings not make it to the US? No reactor so far has ever picked up on this. It's not like it's a secret, it's a well known fact that Plant in particular was a big fan of Tolkien and mentioned it in multiple interviews in the music press in the 70s.
Mordor and Gollum are mentioned so if you’re a LOTR fan you know what they’re singing about. Frodo and friends were rambling on to find The Ring. The LOTR trilogy was very popular around the time this song came out in the late ‘60’s.
Another great "Lord Of The Rings" Zep song is "The Battle Of Evermore" from the "ZOSO" Album. Referencing "The RingWraiths ride in black", among other LOTR references. I always liked to think that the song's end "bring it back, bring it back" could be the Wraiths flying to Mount Doom to get the ring, ending wth that great wailing scream as the ring is destroyed and the Wraths burn up. Maybe not, but I like to think so.
You had to know that unless you were a book reader, more than likely, no one in the US knew about the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings before the movies hit.
I've seen reactions where their eyes pop open when they hear the lyrics...light bulb goes off.

The books were very popular in the US back then actually, but in an underground kind of way, hippie culture. I know I read the whole series, beginning with The Hobbit, in the early 70's, and so did most of my friends. Zeppelin's references were no mystery to us whatsoever. ✌️

Engineers who worked w/ Led Zeppelin in the studio (Eddie Kramer, Glyn Johns, Andy Johns, etc.) all agreed that John Bonham (drums) and John Paul Jones (bass) was one of the tightest rhythm sections they had ever recorded... Most of the songs that Zeppelin recorded in the studio... the drums and bass were done in 1 or 2 takes (per track!)
Jimmy Page would experiment in the studio and put overdubs, layers of guitars, guitar amps and sound effects... but always kept the recordings organic w/ the feel of a live band. Page would play guitar w/ a violin bow, yes... it would make eerie sounds on an electric guitar.
John Paul Jones was the multi-instrumentalist in the band - besides bass and keyboards, he could play guitar, mandolin, piano, etc... but bass was his passion because he was raised on jazz bassist Charles Mingus Jr.
A lot of their 2nd album in 1969 ('Led Zeppelin II'... often nicknamed 'Brown bomber' album) made it on radio, starting w/ the hit single "Whole lotta love"... and carried into "Heartbreaker/ Living loving maid" ... 'Ramble on'... 'What is and what should never be'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

Led Zeppelin II is one of the most amazing 2nd albums of all time. Not a bad track on it, and probably their heaviest record.
Generally a guitar will have a minimum of two pickups or two sets of pickups, one closer to the bridge which is where the strings terminate down past the end of the neck in the guitar body, further to your right as a right-handed player. Some guitars will have a third pick up or set of pickups.
The neck pick up is the one closest to where the neck ends in the body of the guitar, and because it's further up more towards the middle of the strings, it's generally going to have a thicker, fuller warmer tone compared to the bridge pickup. You toggle between the various pickups or choose a group of pickups in parallel, so just by switching pickups or combinations of pickups, you already have a lot more options as to what you can do with your tone. Stevie Ray Vaughan was absolutely a master lightning-fast pickup selector changing to go with exactly what's happening in that specific instant. He was so good at it.
you are "right on" on all your reactions. when i was a teenager in the 60's i never would have thought that people would be doing "reactions" to what i was experiencing as just music that was being pumped out at a blinding pace. it was simply a great time to be living...and never happen again. 60's and 70's the absolute best.
"dazed and confused" is another worthy of top five.
They will NEVER fail you! They were the only band who did that with all those change ups!
You have to listen to Ramble On more! I've been listening to Zeppelin since the early 80's (I'm in my late 50's) and Ramble On is in my Top 5 Led Zeppelin songs. Of course I have the advantage of having constantly listened to their entire catalog for over forty years and this is one of their songs that you can listen to over and over again!

John Bonham played the drums,Jimmy Paige played lead guitar,Robert Plant did lead vocals and John Paul Jones played everything else,he was phenomenal just to say the least,then again they all were phenomenal.

I generally don't rate things I like/love. But I will give you the Zeppelin songs I like to play 🥁🥁.
Nobody's Fault But Mine, Communication Breakdown, Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, Dancing Days, The Ocean, The Rover, Custard Pie, In My Time of Dying, Houses of the Holy, Trampled Under Foot, Kashmir, The Wanton Song, Achilles Last Stand, For Your Life, Hots on for Nowhere, In the Evening, Hot Dog, All My Love, Wearing and Tearing.
It's very difficult if not impossible to rank LZ songs, except on a personal basis, and even then it may change over time. Personally, Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven would be among the 5, so would No Quarter, The Lemon Song and Travelling Riverside Blues but that's not on any of their regular albums. It's on an album called the BBC sessions. I like the sheer power, inventiveness and unique but heavy funky sound of Whole Lotta Love. Stairway to Heaven is just so famous and surprising. It builds and builds throughout with a great guitar solo, No Quarter for me is highly atmospheric and there's lots to enjoy musically in the keyboards and the guitar play, one guitar part in particular almost vibrates in my soul. I love the changing rhythms of the bass in the Lemon Song and the changing tempo, Travelling Riverside Blues is an astonishing live performance showcasing all their talents and their aptitude for the Blues. Plant's vocals are perfect for it, but his vocals are brilliant in all their songs. He has tremendous range and power but also great control and can sing quieter acoustic songs beautifully. He can use his voice as an instrument. Very few musicians can compete with any of LZ on a one for one basis. Collectively they are unbeatable.

I love Tolken and Robert oftentimes sprinkled in references from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Ramble on has some of the most referencesf. "...and Gollum, at the evil wall, crept up and slipped away with her." Overall, this song reminds me of Frodo getting ready for his trip to visit the elves.
He used the neck pickup then rolled the tone back to cut the treble leaving the mids and base then ran it through a sustain unit. I roll my tone back on my guitar . I love the sound it mellows it out I don't care for the biting tone especially from single coil pick ups.
the sad thing is it was never played live by the original band. If it had been, it would be a solidified top 10 Zeppelin song. For me, it's a top 10 Zeppelin track because it's one of those first things I heard after Zeppelin I & IV (Good Times Bad Times, Stairway, Rock & Roll & Dazed & Confused the first songs I remember hearing).
Every bassplayer in the world wishes he/she came up with that one.

Just another LZ song where you cannot help but to ask yourself, "Can it possibly get any better than this"? The honor given to LZ at the Kennedy Center in Dec of 2012 was fully justified. The greatest honor I have ever seen given to a Rock-N-Roll band.

See. . That's the thing about Zeppelin. . .They are all "stars". That's why they were the "solid" number one band of our era. We had a LOT of really great bands in my era, but Zeppelin was "top dog". It's why people are still listening to them.

The most balanced band of all time. Every single member a gifted contributor. The Beatles are the only other comparable band. But, in contrast to the Beatles, with Zep each member wasn't trying to get their personal spotlight. Zep remained cohesive musically, song after song after song. I put them up against any rock band in the Universe.

Jimmy doesn't play violin. He was a sessions player in his teens pre Yardbirds and a violinist there offered his bow to try.

I think when it was selected as number five was before they finish some other albums.? Like, for instance, I don’t believe Kashmir was even on the market yet at that time, which is arguably one of the best if not the best zeppelin song you don’t mind it being so long.

No, no it's not a top five Zeppelin song. It's in the top half of their songs for sure. I might give you top 10, but even that would have to be almost a personal opinion because I wouldn't have it in my top 10. Some might though. There is a producer of some big Netflix show who loves Zeppelin. it's his favorite band and this was his favorite song. I think he named one of the episodes of his show ramble On. I forget if he was able to use the song or not. If it's your favorite Zeppelin song who am I to tell you it's not, but an objective list can't have this in the top five.
It sadly all stopped when John Bonham died. They didn't want to try to replace him. They have occasionally had Jason Bonham (John Bonham's son) perform with them, but John Bonham was irreplaceable.
