Yes as a child of this phenomenal time period ? You bet 6our sweet ass ! I'm 70 now and am so fortunate as to be a part of this extraordinary birth of head banging rock and roll ❤❤❤
You are correct that Knebworth wasn’t part of a tour… it was a comeback of sorts because the band had been inactive and dormant since Robert’s son died during the 77 North American tour… it was the first show since the crazy Oakland shows in 77… and the first time they had played in their home country since the Earl’s court shows in 1975.
What made Bohnam different than most drummers is he got tight with the guitar rather than the bass and he was undeniably the best rock drummer of all time,he started out listening to Buddy Rich and James Brown Bernard Purdie and anything Jazz. Bohnam used his sticks normal,Carmine Appice played sticks backwards. Bohnam always played Ludwig Drums and Paiste Cymbals.Over the years he used a variety of Bass Drum sizes ranging from from 22” to 26 “ in diameter mostly 24x16 but the 26”x14 was essentially a marching drum. This live performance was in Knebworth in England and there first stage appearance since Robert Plants son had died from a stomach virus. They all played with drugs but Jimmy really fell for heroin in the later seventies lasting through the mid eighties. Great band,I could go on and but there influence lives on with each passing generation.
So glad you’re enjoying the Knebworth performance of this song. Yes, Bonzo was in top form that evening as he pounded the skins in a wild gallop. As for Jimmy’s stage clothing, he wore the black ‘dragon’ suit during the last few shows in 1975 and the first few in 1977, then opting to wear the white ‘poppy’ suit for the remainder of the tour.
This is pretty much I don't know if it was the last concert but this was right he died in 80 this was 79 he plays his heart out on this song man to me he's the best I don't care what you say
I don’t think it’s bad that any group should take a song someone created, expand on it and make it their own. Music is meant to be shared. I am a fan of various blues artists because of groups like Led Zeppelin, not in spite of them.
It's not taking a song and expanding on it and making it their own that is the problem Peter. It's taking many many MANY songs from other Musicians/Artists/Composers....and NOT GIVING THOSE COMPOSERS CREDIT for the songs....and putting your name as the SOLE writer of those songs that is the problem. Zeppelin did that. That is stealing. That is lying. That is taking full credit AND money for compositions they did not write, did not create. THAT was the problem with Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. A big, big problem. They were an INCREDIBLE band and PHENOMENAL musicians and UNIQUE and powerful but, they stole a lot of music without giving credit. That's BAD.
@@philosopher0076 Yah, they should’ve credited many of these artists from the get go and most of them they eventually did. But saying it’s stealing makes it seem like these original artists are worse off for Zeppelin covering their songs and I don’t think that’s the case. I wouldn’t know much about Muddy Waters if it wasn’t for Led Zeppelin… and I’m from Chicago. As far as credits and royalties yah, they should be acknowledged and I believe most have been. So just for that I am appreciative of both Zeppelin and those original artists.
I don't know why people and artists for that matter are so angry theses days when their music get re-recorded. Or when the same thing happens with older music. For instance, when Zep was taken to court over apparently having "copied" or "stolen" music from another group in the same ear. It's called a remix or sampling. People who have this happen to them need to chill out and think of it as a compliment. Their music is so well liked so other bands want to use it as a "spring board" to their own music. In short, I agree with you.
In this concert, one of their last concert in a live, Jimmy, can you see, is so weet, so "flaco", his face is not sane. He was very trouble with the heroine, Bonhan have travel whith his adiction to alcohol, and Robert Plant he had lost his little son, two years ago. He is still so sad, and in his eyes you can see that he his not the same. Still, whith all this problem how good they playing. They are magics, so good musicians. A few later Bonhan died, and this was the finaly por the band. They made 10 albums for the history. Absolute in love whth zepp for ever.
Somebody said, and I forgot who, and I thought that this was one of the best quotes about Bonham I ever heard: "Bonham is great for the notes he did not play as much for the notes he did play." I am not sure if I got the quote right but if you listen closely to Bonham you will hear it. His rhythms and cadences are so unlike anybody else's. Maybe this is why you so readily recognize his playing as his.
Excellent! I personally think Bonham was the best of the best!! I have been a Zeplin fan for 50 years and I watch all of your reactions. So cool, so fun.
What you said about the Bonham sound. I can tell you. I've been a fan since their beginnings. I've seen them live. Owned every slbum. On all forms of media. When they released the last album. In through the outdoor. Although I think Coda was technically after it. I believe they were more unused cuts maybe previously recorded. I had the radio on. I hadn't heard anything yet. The first time I heard a cut on our local station in Toronto. A song came on, I didn't recognize. The intro started, and I immediately recognized the drum sound. Said to my girlfriend, That sounds like Bonham. This must be the new Zep Album. Sure enough. Moments later Robert's vocals started.
Achilles Last Stand is, to me, THE Zeppelin song. Stairway? Nah... everyone "likes" Stairway because it eases and lulls you in. It's easy to relax and let it slowly consume you. But Achilles? Nope... not here, it doesn't give you that option. Achilles punches you in the face with unyielding force and you either get it and survive the emotional onslaught, or you find out that maybe... just maybe, you're not the real fan of the REAL Led Zeppelin that you thought you were. This is one of the greatest songs and performances from four of the finest Rock and Roll gods ever assembled on a stage. They took their entire bag of tricks, loaded it into a cannon, and then blew out the brains of nearly a quarter million people on the English Countryside. There wasn't a single moment to relax. I've always felt that Achilles is the fastest 10 minutes in music, because when it's all over, when the final chords march off into the distance, you're left obliterated by its path. And yet, all you want is more of it. I guess that sums up the legacy of Zeppelin.
The Led Zeppelin song "In The Evening" was written by Robert Plant about Page's drug addiction. The lyric "So don't let her play you for a fool" would be the drug (maybe heroin) being "her." Later in the song "So don't you let her get under your skin" (a reference to injecting heroin?) And the lyric "I need your love, I just got to have your love" I think is Robert Plant wanting Jimmy Page to get himself together and be more cooperative. There's an amazing live performance of this song on UA-cam as well.
Jimmy disappeared into his addictions after Karac died. He wasn't even at the funeral. Robert has never forgiven him for that. JP was on holiday with his family and was also a no show. Robert didn't need that kinda heartbreak on top of losing his precious boy. He said it really made him question who were his friends. But of course, Bonzo never left his side. 💔
@@jaynethomas7380 Thanks for this info. It might explain the emotion expressed in this great song. I hope that Robert Plant has forgiven Jimmy and probably has. Drug addiction is a menace.
Late to this party, but I always love seeing folks learn of the greatness of Zeppelin and especially my favorite song of theirs: Achilles Last Stand. There are days where I put this on repeat for hours!
They didn't perform a lot in 1979, however they did two knebworth shows... Which is a large outdoor stadium... This performance happened towards the end of the night, so Jimmy took off his jacket and his accoutrement and was left in a sweaty blue shirt which appears obviously in all the songs! I love Jones's tuxedo and his base playing is in lock step with the drums, which adds to the volume
In 1979..led zeppelin finished the European leg of the tour, in 1980 the north American leg was starting in .. Chicago, I had tickets for Detroit in June 😢
Starting in September of '68 they pretty much stayed on tour until August of '73. Only taking breaks to record & managed to produce 5 albums during that time. 2 of which were in the first year. They didn't tour again until '75. Next was '77. Three shows in '79. And a small tour in '80
They were not on tour. This was their first performance since Robert’s sons death. They did two consecutive weekends at Knebworth, which was and is a huge music festival in England. They did not tour afterward.
@@PeterTea That's right. It was supposed to be a 1980 summer warm-up for a Fall tour of America, which was cancelled when Bonham died during rehearsals at Page's house in Pangbourne, England. There's bootlegs of the tour, which was scaled down considerably from their mid-seventies heyday.
@@Ed9870 Yah. I always thought that their was something fitting that a group named after a German airship inventor should have their final show in Berlin.

If you notice when Jimmy misses a note on his lead play he will try to play the rest of the notes in his lead to make that note fit in he might play 300 different notes but in that progression that Miss note will somehow fit in
You have to watch 'The Song Remains the Same' That's all the footage from the 1973 Show you react to in NYC at MSG. It's over 2 hrs of music from that show. The movie was released in 76.
There was a drummer that Bohnam was friends with called Carmine Appice he used the butt end of sticks Bohnam did not. 1975 Robert and his family along with Jimmy’s daughter were in a violent car crash that was almost fatal as they went off a Cliff, luckily they hit a tree that stopped there descent but Robert shattered his ankle and his wife had a fractured skull it was pretty bad so 1975 was in the books as far as touring the US and they had done shows in Europe with Several shows at Royal Albert hall that were taped and filmed strictly for the band. Zeppelin toured a lot and they took great pride in being known as a "working band" (i.e., a group that tours a lot instead of spending most of their time in studio), however, this wasn't part of a tour. Instead, Knebworth was an outdoor music festival. Please don't get too hung up on fashion; fashion comes and goes and it's not surprising they'd change it up. At this point, Jimmy was 35 and, chances are, you're not going to be wearing the same styles as you did in your 20s regardless of who you are. As a fan, I don't discuss their drug/drink problems. I know all about them and it's not because I have some idealized vision of them, or that I'm trying to hide/ignore but because it's too easy to sink into the muck of sleazy, whispered gossip with stories from someone who heard from someone who read about a person who saw... Anyway, you mentioned when the vocals go back and forth with the guitar, that's called a "call and response" and was often used in blues music. This song is a tour de force masterpiece.
Basically if you ask anyone who knows anything about rock music: Robert plant; debatably the best rock singer of all time. John Paul Jones; debatably best all around instrumentalist. Jimmy page; debatably greatest guitarist of all time. John Bohnam; UNDEBATIVELY best drummer of all time
Lotta drummers compete with Bonham. Many would say it’s Peart. A lot of people say Bill Ward does most of what Bonham did only twice as hard. Charlie Watts and Ringo kept tighter grooves than Bonzo. No disputing he has to be part of the conversation even when that convo gets short. But it’s still up for debate bec its not ever objective.
Their last "tour" was in 1977. I saw them in Chicago. I believe it was a three night stand. I don't know if I was there the night the Chicago Mob stole the entire box off receipts. However, it was a very stark and shocking way of saying " Welcome to Chicago."
If you wanna learn about John bottoms kit, you need to listen to a youTuber called Rick Beato a well respected music producer turned UA-camr. He literally takes apart a kit and starts talking about it’s different integral parts in a particular what bottoms kit was built like. He expertly recreates When the Levee breaks drum sound.
The reason for the outfits is cuz the media was calling them old and like dinosaurs of rock cuz there was young bands coming up like Van Halen was the story I always heard
Every now and then they let Jason Bunyan John’s son play. Later on they played a concert with Jason after his dad died. They broke up because nobody could replace john
Here they are …under rehearsed…some drug issues ..hesitation…nerves ..first time back in Europe since 1975…and they pull off this magnificent performance.
That is why I led Zeppelin could not continue after John Bonham passed nobody could ever possibly do what he did on them drums even though Jason his son is pretty close the they Apple in fall apart from the tree
John Bonham had a family as well who he loved. He was an alcoholic. It wasn't going to be on Roberts terms. Unfortunately he passed away. I don't know why Jimmy couldn't do his 30 minutes solos. I absolutely love his solos. They're my favorite part of the shows!
Not many pick up how John Bonham usually followed Jimmy. That's actually backwards from the way most bands play. But you're right there are songs where it's more prevelant and obvious Kashmir is one of them.
Page went into a deep depression after zep disbanded in 1980 started clean up about 1984 in my opinion thanks to Paul Rodgers who got jimmy to join him in a band named the firm
If you want to hear Bonzo really go off on the drums? Listen to “ Listen to this Eddie “ 1977 bootleg from the 1st night from LA!!! F-ing incredible!!!! And you can thank me later!!!!!✌️🤘
If you can't enjoy drugs and alcohol w/ your Rock music, especially while performing, then what's the point? Jimmy has never copped to anything personal, but he did say that "EVERY NIGHT ON STAGE W/ LED ZEPPELIN WAS LIVING!!"
You need to listen to the album version for maximum whack factor my friend. I was at this show. They're all dressed like they work in a ladies clothes shop and yes it's good but they weren't at their very best imho

Zeppelin rules.
Been watching you, you're awesome, thanks! Please do Custard Pie!!!
Undebatively is my new favorite word. Truth you speak for sure. 🙂
Saw them in 1979 at Knebworth last performance before John Bonham died.
Their last "tour" was in 1977. I saw them in Chicago. I believe it was a three night stand. I don't know if I was there the night the Chicago Mob stole the entire box off receipts. However, it was a very stark and shocking way of saying " Welcome to Chicago."
This is the best rock 'n' roll band in the universe, some say, and you're asking where Jimmy's bedazzled outfit is? Ok.
Imagine seeing that live
I had tickets 3x and someone always died
Shucks
You cannot pause during the solos . It really is a sacrilege.
Jimmy pages famous dragon stage outfit 1977 tour was the last time Page wore that famous dragon outfit live on stage
Bonham beat the drums like they owed him money!!
The reason for the outfits is cuz the media was calling them old and like dinosaurs of rock cuz there was young bands coming up like Van Halen was the story I always heard
It’s 79...Fashions change!
NOBODY sounds like bonham! he was a MONSTER!
Every now and then they let Jason Bunyan John’s son play. Later on they played a concert with Jason after his dad died. They broke up because nobody could replace john
The concerts at Knebworth were warm ups for a new tour, but Bonham died and they cancelled the second concert .
Those are Dragons on his white and black attire in the 70s
Please, please react to my favourite Zeppelin song and an amazing cover of Robert Johnson's blues classic, "Travelling Riverside Blues".
Here they are …under rehearsed…some drug issues ..hesitation…nerves ..first time back in Europe since 1975…and they pull off this magnificent performance.
They are like 4 greek gods who could play instruments
this whole live preformance is kinda driven by the drums but really the guitar
The average length of their concerts were three to four hours! The Beatles were an average of fifteen minutes!
I was in England and 1979
That is why I led Zeppelin could not continue after John Bonham passed nobody could ever possibly do what he did on them drums even though Jason his son is pretty close the they Apple in fall apart from the tree
After seeing this performance .. why the hell is their any debate on who the greatest drummer that has ever lived is ..John Henry Bonham ..
The Beatles...
Could never play this
Today's fun fact.
John Bonham had a family as well who he loved. He was an alcoholic. It wasn't going to be on Roberts terms. Unfortunately he passed away. I don't know why Jimmy couldn't do his 30 minutes solos. I absolutely love his solos. They're my favorite part of the shows!
Bonham is way better than Moon. Bonzo follows Jimmy...JPJ follows Bonzo...Robert throws in where it goes...no tighter improvised band in the world!!
Absolutely Correct !!
Not many pick up how John Bonham usually followed Jimmy. That's actually backwards from the way most bands play. But you're right there are songs where it's more prevelant and obvious Kashmir is one of them.
@@charlessarver8350 yep you're right! I am the ultimate Zeppelin fan! I notice everything!
BLM and Zep forever x
Listen to Album version.. They are the same.. That is why they were the greatest ever..
No, Bonham did not use the back end of the drum stick.
Page went into a deep depression after zep disbanded in 1980 started clean up about 1984 in my opinion thanks to Paul Rodgers who got jimmy to join him in a band named the firm
WOW, that’s sad
Paul Rodgers likely saved Jimmy's life, that's how low Jimmy had fallen.
If you want to hear Bonzo really go off on the drums? Listen to “ Listen to this Eddie “ 1977 bootleg from the 1st night from LA!!! F-ing incredible!!!! And you can thank me later!!!!!✌️🤘
Jhon Paul Jones is the most underrated bass player in history. This from a rithum guitarist and bassist.
Hey, you've got to listen to the song ,"RAMBLE ON" !!!! Please!?
If you can't enjoy drugs and alcohol w/ your Rock music, especially while performing, then what's the point? Jimmy has never copped to anything personal, but he did say that "EVERY NIGHT ON STAGE W/ LED ZEPPELIN WAS LIVING!!"
Read the lyrics to Caroselambra and do a review plz
You need to listen to the album version for maximum whack factor my friend. I was at this show. They're all dressed like they work in a ladies clothes shop and yes it's good but they weren't at their very best imho
Listen to the seattle 1977 version .
It’s called call & recall
