Man I'm rewatching these fzd videos now that I learned more about art, I got a whole new vision. The more you know about a subject the better you'll understand.
Tactics Lc same. I watched all his videos years ago, but then I leaned that the best way to get better is just to practice and not spend too much time watching others. Now that I come back to his videos occasionally, they click so much more
mr feng i have been drawing traditionally all my life but it is you that inspired me to go digital its been a rought 3 months but everytime you put up a video like these i juat get motivated. so i thank you from the bottom of my heart.
There aren't really words to describe how awesome it is to listen to this video while doing freelance line drawings at 5am. Thanks for always giving us more Feng!
FZDSCHOOL is the only reason why I'm going to youtube.
That segment about "line drawing" beginning at 3:36 - some serious pearls of wisdom there. Awesome video from a true professional. Thank you so much Feng!
I wish I had these videos available 20yrs ago in elementary school. Such a great teacher!!!!
Your vids make me feel comfortable about my progression, yet challenges my perceptions of the business alot so I can see what I need to learn. Thanks alot Feng!

I absolutely live for your videos, they give very helpful tips for the design industry that you can't see anywhere else!
For anyone wondering, Singapore is a very modern, safe, and beautiful city to live in. I'm sure it's a good city to come to learn drawing/design from FZD. Not to mention there's a lot of good food around every corner. and the people are very friendly too. But also because of the aforementioned, it's also a slightly expensive city to live in.
Like many of you, i can't afford to go to this school nor is it a good time in my life to, but I'm sure every artist would love to go to this school.
You are my idol Feng! I wish I could attend your school for fun but i'm on the other side of the world, Thank you for putting up the videos and explaining the steps that those between hobbyist and pros forget or need to move up.
This video was so timely. I just graduated from art school about two weeks ago and I already have two potential clients. I have to meet with one tomorrow and I had no idea how much to charge. I have the Graphic Artist Handbook, but I don't feel comfortable charging that much for my art neither do I think they will pay that much. It was good to hear how to break it down.
Priceless info...it's a a virtual mentorship! Now, I know what to work on and even better what NOT to stress about.
The love using this marker-followed-by-line method, both digital and on paper. I like using pencils in the same manner too, starting with hard 2h-4h and then going to a 2b or 4b for the line.
This is fantastic, thank you very much for taking time out of your day to help others and really just spread information about this job with all your skill and expertise. To be quite honest you are a very kind person who I'm sure is a type of role model to some of your viewers.
Amazing!.. overtime I watch Feng Zhu work I am ALWAYS blown away, had the pleasure of taking his class at Gnomon some years ago... wish I could just pick up and move to Singapore and go to FZD. I've also been using this marker technique every since he introduced it, It really does make the creative process so much easier to work through.
Im a games design student in the UK and i was looking at drawing stuff. I stumbled on your videos a couple days ago, and just want to thank you for taking the time to upload this stuff. Your experience and advice is invaluable! :D
One of the most insightful videos on the web about this industry. Great as always to view your videos.
What you said about the gun barrel thing is really interesting! Definitely something Ill keep in mind
Can answer you from my experience. For me it's all about your portfolio, your skill, your resume and if you get the position - your ability to work in the team. These are the things that defines one artist as employee material from another. If you're confident, that you're ready to try the job - you either look up the job postings or the certain companies career section of the website - and just send your resume and portfolio. If you have reference from previous jobs - would also be good.
I just love your videos and advices! specially the one at the beginning about not buying fancy stuff when you are just starting! - That is so true, when I began with digital I only had a cheap and humble Genius 6x8 tablet or something like that, it was terrible, the pen would run out of batteries all the time, the drivers were a mess, but I held on there for about 3 or 4 years, learning all I could and trying my best, until I finally felt skill-confident enough to invest in something better!
im 14 and i got my first tablet which was a cintiq companion hybird and even though it didnt improve my skills, it did motivate me to draw more and ive had it for 6 months now and i have improved quite a bit. so drawing daily/all the time improves ur skill andyou should motivate your self to draw a lot.
Hi Feng thanks so much for all your videos I've watched or listened to them all so many times I've lost count!
I feel really happy with my art and design work now and it's all thanks to you really. Hopefully with a bit more work I can find a junior position to get me started When I went to art college I was disencouraged from doing this sort of thing, and I was put off art and design for several years! While I'm disappointed I gave up, I'm glad to be doing it again. Thank you for inspiring me
"You gonna be eating couple noodles all day long" 🤣 I love this guy!
You speak better than all my art school professors ever did. I enjoy learning from you. Thanks!
Funny I felt that way too at first... but i got over that and it feels more natural, like drawing on paper. Cant wait to get a 24HD.
So, are you just drawing grey "blobs" with a vague idea of what you want and then picking out form and doing the design in the second stage with the calligraphy pen?
Absolutely love your vids by the way, sooooo informative and interesting and MASSIVELY appreciated! Thank you endlessly!
I'd love to see your take on portraiture and/or drawing facial expressions. Your videos and your way of thinking about design have helped me tremendously. Thanks!
me and my class found out about the school and you just yesterday. i am baffled by them and want to let u know that you inspired us.
Man, I was great at line drawing for years, AND i loved spending my days at it. Still have the knack for it, but when I went to art school, they practically bet it out of me :/ Time to get trucking again. great video, lovely line work.
What a great way to start my Toronto morning, thank you Feng.
You really opened my mind to encourage myself not to stop drawing just because I'd think I cannot keep up with professional artists (talking about painting speed, satisfaction with the results, comparability etc.). I remember that I nearly singed up for FZD School last year but was too critical about my current level - even though art is my life.
what
This is all very interesting,... thank you for such a great presence on UA-cam.
In contrast to what you say about hand drawing & designing,... I haven't been successful in converting to digital art and when presenting my work to prospective studios, their ONLY interest is in knowing "what programs do I know?" They've never cared about my years of 'experience'... only if I can sit right down at a computer and start cranking out work,... be ready for that when interviewing - in my experience.
Practice, practice, practice. Set achievable goals for yourself and keep challenging yourself with something a little harder every time you reach that goal. Rock on.
Huge fan of your videos. I'm in a design school and hope to get into concept art after I graduate so hearing all this is really helpful. Keep them coming!
niiiiice..always nice to hear you also while drawing.. we artists need like-minded people .. its very helpfull
Just check his pictures, listen carefully and at some point, you will understand how Feng treats composition. It was a real eye opener when i figured out, how Feng actually leads the viewer around the picture. He has a pretty clever 'method' of composition.
Feng, it is very grateful to give so much of his information away for free. Thank you very much, Mr. Zhu,
I agree with your cintiq evaluation. Personally I have a cintiq, bought after saving up for a few months, and love it! My drawings have improved slightly, still no where near professional level, but drawing on the cintiq really feels like your drawing on paper again compared to drawing on say a intous or bamboo, which is what I had before,
This is great stuff Feng... such a great technique. I always enjoy coming back to your channel from time to time. Thanks.
FYI, we have many students in their 30’s and they are doing well. =)
Hope I'll get to see those who are also wanting to do the same thing as Feng in a few years!
wow, a half hour just blasted by! Surprisingly engaging stuff man!
using a tablet with a screen is much different from using a tablet without one. If you're going from traditional to a tablet, there is a MASSIVE learning curve, but going from traditional to a screen tablet, there's a much smaller change, since you're still drawing directly on what your pen is touching.
Same here, I bought me like 5 books on art fundamentals and they should arrive tomorrow.. Really looking forward to the moment my paintings don't suck anymore.
i really respect the fact that line work is still relevant in today's world of concept art.
Hey Feng,
Not sure if you get a chance to read this but i was on vacation and stopped by singapore to check out your school. I'm a big fan of your youtube series and i've watched all the episodes. I caught a glimpse of the class on the first floor, everyone was focused and learning. I was envious. I asked the reception girls if i could meet with you and maybe take a photo but they said that you were busy. i was really bummed b/c i flew all the way from the USA. Your school is awesome! =)
So impressive and amazing and actually pretty easy to follow! Hats off to you once again
what I do is just realise that everyone is at that stage in their career, so all you have to do is just keep practising and you will get there. also I find try thinking outside the box when starting on something
Just pure AWESOMENESS !!!!!!
Thank you so much for these videos. I have learned more in 3 months then I have in 1 year while in college. Thank you, I think by the end of the year I could finally start applying for concept art jobs! again thank you.
Hi Bradley, Feng actually mentioned about this topic in Design Cinema Episode 47 (8:10 into the video). Hope this helps! :)
thanks for making this video FZ! I've been feeling down because I spend a lot of time working on my drawing skills but not as much on my painting, I feel a little better now
I use a Cintiq 21UX i liked it WAY better than the Intuous. There are some who prefer not seeing the artwork directly where they are painting but I am not one of them. I highly recommend getting the Cintiq over the Intous. That way you can concentrate on the art and not getting used to looking somewhere other than where you are actually working. I know my own work improved drastically when I made the jump. I intend to upgrade to the 24HD as soon as budget allows.
Feng Zhu Thank you for doing the demos. It is good to hear tech as well as the lifestyle. Also
hardware tip are great. have A cintiq at office but may do something different at home studio.
I'm a Pro and enjoy hearing demo as I work. May want to talk about the inter play of students in college enviroment and how you learn from others as well as instructors...
I have more respect for you than any other professional on youtube now Feng. Everyone, and just about everyone, avoids talking about money.
Question comes up : Around how much can you make doing this?
Response :
It's not about how much you can make. It's about whether you enjoy it or not.
Oh you can make something.
You can make pretty good money.
Everyone is always so ambiguous about money. Like lightning would strike them if they even just said 'an upper middle class salary.'
Keep Rocking! What one person requires 1 million dollars a year just to survive
Concept art pays the same as Editorial Illustration and any other media drawing.
You can make about 200-7000 per project on average. DEPENDING on your skill, the complexity, the clients budget, etc
Sometimes you will go weeks or months without any work unless you're internet famous and do commissions on the side or if you work in a studio. Working for a studio rather than freelance is better for artists who want to be secure but you will probably make like 30-50k in most studios as an in-house concept artist/illustrator of any kind
Editorial Illustration and Concept art are quickly becoming popular but concept artists don't like to talk about their salary..
There are concept designers that can make like 200k+ a year doing freelance (Like Feng Zhu/Craig Mullins/Scott Robertson probably can join the list, etc), There are also illustrators and fine artists who can.
Anyway my point is. ALL ARTISTS MAKE THE SAME KIND OF MONEY DEPENDING ON THEIR CLIENTS AND POPULARITY BUT THEY JUST DO DIFFERENT THINGS.
IMO Editorial Illustration is the "easiest" kind of artist work. But their art directors mainly look for people that are internet famous it seems.
I think only Fine Artists worth millions or who can literally sell every piece for more than 2000k are the exception
Wow! Everything about this video was... "great"... the drawings, the hints, the professional advice... I just subscribed.
Then you would enjoy his full tutorials where you can actually see his techniques as he teaches in depth in these videos. www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/search_results.php
jawaadart Yeah, actually, I've watched a handful of his videos already. They're great.
If you haven't already, check out Peter Han,Jason Chan,James Paick and Jason Park all have great tutorials on character concept design, mech design/functions and environment design as well as thought process for creating art and industry workflow.
Hey Feng, really enjoy these videos and getting your point of view of the industry as well. It would be great if you were to do a video what are the different aspects of design like function, mechanics, form and shape, user usability etc. Just an over all scope what the word "design" consists of in the area of entertainment design to increase student awareness.
Either way, love what you are doing and appreciate sharing your knowledge :)
man I miss these videos :( it's sad they stopped this series
only by doing things we can't do can we learn to do them. doing stuff we are already familiar with is easy. push your boundaries.
Feng Zhu I have to say I think you're a extremely talented concept artist! And it really annoys me that you were just 19 when you started in the industry I need to step it up fast.. Great video !
Love these videos so much. The colour us always so beautiful but if you look back at how he did it's pretty simple. The hard part is the rest of it
Hi there, your tutorial are great on how to apply at Digital Painting. Every each of your design looks cool and awesome. And the most important thing is,I kinda like your balance lifestyle and like you always said don't get yourself killed. That's the way similar to mine, have a nice day.
once again thank you for an inspiring and honest video.
Thank you so much for these videos. Your skills and and information you share is fantastic. Very inspirational. please keep them coming. I am a massive fan and you have been very very helpful in helping my drive my work to the next level. May be one day i will be able to make it to singapore.
Thank you, great video and insight to real need of Cintiq.
Amazing FZ i ve been looking forward to the new FZD New Episode.
this one was pretty interesting and good to know the facts that line drawings are the core way to judge an artist
Am learning a lot from your videos to improve my digital paintings
Those are some really interesting tips you give between the videos
Thanks again
Just to give my experience, even though I'm not nearly in the same league as Zhu. My first gig was unpaid assistant just for a summer, and it has been invaluable. People don't like wasting their time, so if you have no experience and a small portfolio (like most students), do anything you can to get a short term gig doing anything, just to get the connections and to make it worth their time to look closer at you as a person, not just another short CV in the pile.It will increase your odds a lot.
I bought my Cintiq 12wx a couple years back on a whim... I was frustrated with using the wacom tablets with the disconnect hand/eye. I'm glad I did the purchase.
I'm planning on getting the 24HD... a good way is to afford one (I've done this) to put more $ off your pay to tax ($50/cheque)... then I get a huge tax return at the end of the year... for me its about $3000 in a return.
oh i didn't think of that. was thinking more on the lines of references and perspective pretty much everything else, except drawings. thanks
Very educational video. I've learned a lot!
Thanks you very much!
Oh I so agree on lineart drawings boost with Cintiq. I'm so much used to pencil and paper feel for lineart rather than on intuos, so when I got my cintiq 24hd as well recently - i've liked it instantly. By the way - never liked buttons on tablets, so i keep using my usual keyboard.
Stunning Feng!
I was really missing the old looks of your paper drawing, the result is really astonishing, it feels like marker-drawn (except for the missing over-drawing ink causes) but as you say at the end on digital you can leverage the media to give that additional touch.
Also very intersting all the talking on life, have a good one! :)
Hey Feng... Don't know if you get to see this but I'd just like to say how awesome you are for making time to do these videos. I'm very confident that many enjoy the fact on how teach techniques and on different subjects within the industry. So thank you so much. Also do you have any advice for those who are self learning?
Hi Feng, Can you post just one of these sketches in a real-time video? Seeing everything unfold so fast is very intimidating and I know alot of people who would enjoy a real time view!
Hey everyone, thanks for all the comments. I'll try to record another episode by next week, before our school goes back into session. I'll try to answer most of your questions during that episode. And please don't subscribe to my personal channel...i have nothing there. Please subscribe to the fzdschool account. Thanks everyone. :P
your stuff is always so inspiring
Very informative and inspiring, thank you FZD and Feng!
Thank you so so much for these videos. So inspirational to hear you speak and amazing artwork as always :)
It forces your mind to look at the piece differently, Makes it easier to notice things that need to be fixed. As an artist you will have a vision of what you want to make it look like. Anything you do to the flipped version should evolve your design for the better. Almost a change in perspective, that gets your brain to work harder.
Thanks for the insight on the industry and on your personal life as well. It's safe to say that a concept designer/illustrator can make good money as long has there is a market and the companies are trying to compete with one another for the best product. Sadly that´s not the case all over... there are some pretty shadowy projects that just take what an artist makes and then dismiss it for no good reason! I personally have had such experience but here the game industry is almost non-existent!
Feng, you have the most awesome handwriting!
Hi Feng !
Thank you for all the valuable stuff you keep putting in this one and only channel !
I want to ask you about if being able to draw really good is still the most important skill for juniors to be hired ?
I got the 24HD because I'm doing comic art which is totally drawing focused, and I like very tight linework, so I was constantly pushing against the limit of my separated hand-eye co-ordination with my intuos. after about a year of using it i'm pleased, but one thing i still notice- the screen is more slippery than an intuos or any paper, and so you need that little bit finer muscle control. even using the felt nibs. other than that the experience is very much like trad drawing, ->cntd
Its different for everybody, I'd say just keep at it. Some people need more time to get used to using a new tool since it's a new skill altogether (hand-eye coordination).
I think I took around 3 years before I'm finally comfortable with my tablet.
Also, usually you will improve over time, you just might not notice it :)
Have more faith in yourself and good luck!
Yeah, I totally see what you mean. I draw on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet and while it's awesome to be able to draw on the go, it definitely means my hand will be in the way whenever drawing.
It's also pretty restricted (especially zooming out), possibly in the same sense as the 24HD Cintiq is. I have considered buying the smallest Cintiq, but I fear it's not for me. I also own the Intuous3 A4 and that still works really well for my needs.
Hi Feng, your videos are very informative and inspiring! I am also an ACCD graduate from 07 as illustrator, while I have a tons of questions. I only have one that I think it's really essential for me. Due to my nature of diversity, I made myself into a generalist instead of specialist, I do concept art, matte painting and a bit of 3d rendering and video visual effect. My question is do you know anyone who is a generalist and doing well. Or should I really focus on one thing to make a living
Hello Feng, I'm a design student in the states investigating an illustration technique that you're using here. Basically using these silhouette blots to draw from. I have not been able to find much about this style of illustration on youtube beyond your Character Silhouette ep (#30, I think). I was wondering if you could go into detail on how you use these silhouettes in your process. Or point me to someone that has already. :) Thanks Feng, and keep up these vids. They're amazing!
Hey there, when i was looking for a school i found communication design and art direction. I dont really learn anatomy but with a little bit of effort you can learn it yourself. But this could definitely be what you are looking for if you are able to find a school offering these courses. I live in Germany and these courses are only offered by private schools.
Hi Feng, info for your audience stats :- I'm a Stop-motion animator (35) at Aardman Animations in the UK. We're currently in-between films so I'm screenwriting and improving my drawing skills thanks to you. I love your work and teaching style.
This one was very informative and interesting! Thank you!
amen to the weapon design remark...totally agree.
So awesome... i been an artist for a long time ...
Absolutely amazing!
Another awesome vid feng, really appreciating these vids.
awesome :D soo happy the show is back :D.. i hope you had a good summer vacation Feng :D
Finally getting used to how fast you talk Feng. >:) Thanks for the tut. Awesomeness.
Hi Feng, hopefully you can answer this question for me. Is it possible for a self taught artist to make it in the industry? Also, in comparison to a graduate, what disadvantages should one expect if he/she would continue to pursue to learn on their own?
Hi! In regards to your queries, we do not have any financial aid nor scholarship program for international students. For more information, please check the FAQ section on FZD School's website. Thanks!
Yeah man, don't think you're just gonna waltz into FZD and you'll get to meet Feng and go get a drink with him lol. The man is swamped with work and teaching during office hours. The staff is very friendly and will give you a tour of the school if you make a proper appointment. However, they're NOT just going to let you go interrupt a class
When you are tasked with a particular job by a client, and it involves things you are not familiar with - how do you fit your studies into your workflow? Do you just build on top of your studies or do you keep them separate?
Hi Feng, once again thank you for the video. doing traditional drawing and painting for 20years or so, and digital for about 7 years, your videos have improved my artwork exponentially thanks to your lessons, so thank you. Secondly, I have a question: How big should your portfolio be, before you approach a company for work, either as a permanent employee or as a freelance artist? thanks again. =)
