I've got a feeling - he actually kept the Pro.
What do you mean? How do you know?
HE said it's a feeling @@diotitus
@@Linkincage You mean “she”.
After having an iMac for 9 years, it was a no brainer for me to get the M2 Pro. Keeping a computer longer than most, I wanted to future proof my computer. Love the extra ports, 32 GB ram and a 1TB drive.
I agree, for those of us who don't insist on changing our machines every 6-12 months to follow the crowd, the M2 Pro is the best option for longevity vs cost.
When the M3 comes out, I'll probably watch the keynote only, and save myself the time and effort of watching endless subjective reviews on UA-cam channels based on want rather than need.
me too
Three that.
Are any of you guys music producers? Just wondering how things are going in those woods
Agree and same here. I have my new M2 Pro mini next to me as we speak with the same specs and a studio display to go along with it. I'm replacing my 2012 iMac 27" with Intel i7 with it
Very logical and reasonable arguments. I definitely agree with why you have chosen the M2 Mac Mini
I also think the Mac mini M2 is enough to edit videos. Since I use graphical programs that use a lot of memory, I think it is better to be on the safe side and increase to 16 GB ram. You confirmed my decision, thank you
I needed more ram and storage. If I upgrade M2 Mac mini it goes up to $999. Having the extra ports, more cpu cores and gpu cores on M2 Pro Mac mini made the jump to $1299 easy for me.
I’m into video editing too so your tests are very interesting. Thanks!
Hey Matt, I just love your videos and the information you give kudos to your work keep doing it. I am thinking of getting a Macbook Air M2 as I have never had one.
you do so many good comparisons which is soooo helpful for apple because they have such variety with their products like pro, ultra, and max of ipads, watches, and iphones. keep up the comparisons matt super helpful 😊
This is a great guide to apple's doing. I will definitly think about trying to use a new macbook or even learn some art on an ipad. 2023 is my year.
Congrats on almost 500k
FINALLY! Was waiting for someone to tell me the comparison of H.264 / H.265 encoding on M2 vs M2 Pro
Totally agree. I've just ordered my M2 Mac Mini with 16 GB Ram and 512 GB SSD. Gonna last me for at least 5 years down the road for personal basic video editing and everyday use.
Hi, are the videos you plan to edit in 4k? I am also trying to decide whether it is mini m2 or m2 pro.. If I buy m2 maybe 24 gb. I would be likely to buy ram, because it's 24 gb on the pro side. There is no ram and its next tier is 32 gb. ? My only fear is that after 3-5 years, 16gb. ramin is not enough for amateurish raw photo and 4k video editing.
What is your opinion on this?
I had the M1 Macbook Air and sold it, it felt a bit sluggish, have just got the M2 Mac Mini Pro for work, haven't turned my gaming rig on since, it's so powerful, ticks all the boxes for me... have done some gaming on it and some music production as well as lots of programming. I haven't tried the normal M2 but when your boss is paying the PRO is what you want, because you are PRO.
Hey Matt, I think you made a good decision there.
Great videos, keep it up.
Great info on this. Just another reason to stay with the M2 model . If i go with this device i will do the M2, probably up the ram for the 512 g. Thanks
not really into iMacs ‘coz i prefer portability so i’ll probably just go with a macbook or an ipad for architecture school. But this year, I’m planning to upgrade my first gen SE to a ProMax model for larger display and storage, anyway thanks for these info Matt✨
Great rationale! Practical and sensible. Subscribed because of this no nonsense approach. What configuration is your M2 Mini? I am
Assuming you have external storage? I wish the m2 mini had more ports like the M2 Pro but a hub and external storage is probably a lot cheaper.
I plan to buy a MacBook in 2023-Good luck for 500K subscribers Matt!!!You are too close!!!.
1:50-This difference really does show it’s not worth it until you need to fully utilise it!.
This does make a lot of sense,The M2 pro is a very powerful chip but as you said most people won’t even utilise all of it and won’t need that much power,I definitely agree that the M2 is more then enough for majority of tasks!!.Thanks Matt for sharing your experience with the M2 pro and M2 mac mini and informing us that we don’t all need to get the best of the best for everything-Thanks so much Matt-Keep up the great content!.
Fully agree!
Good video. I agree so I am getting the M2 Mac Mini. I am also getting the M3 Mac Mini next year.
Mat i love your videos. I have a dream of having a macbook pro. Which model is good for my college study's and video editing needs?
congratulations for upcoming 1/2 million subscribers 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎊
The base model IS a good machine. I tried that model. I would Highly recommend that Anyone that Can afford it, upgrade to 16GB ram. it makes the Entire system more responsive and more fluid throughout usage. Not to mention it helps future proof the machine so you can use it longer.
I agree with you Matt! It’d be the same for me tbh. So close to 500k!!
First time viewer. Great honest video ! I am retired and never owned apple products. There OS seems easier to use. Plan on purchasing a macbook sometime soon. Again great imformational video on your thoughts about which mach. to purchase for the price point !
So I like your comparison! My question is, could you do 4k video or not so well, and what ram do you need? I use 2 monitors, will it support this. Thanks
wow, you are encoding in H.365, that's revolutionary!
I'm holding out for an M4 Pro Mini when it comes out at the end of this year. As for Pro vs Regular, I could probably live with the Regular, but as it would be my only home computer, and I do a lot of heavy simulations for work, I'd need a minimum of 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD (plus multi TB external drive), and by the time I've got those, I'm almost at the Pro, where the extra cores I would definitely make use of.
Looking forward to 2023 products and the M3 line especially.
Nice review
I do mostly music production (daw's). The Mac Mini M1 16GB 1TB is for this purpose working very well. I do not need more, however the new Mac M2's are so attractive ;-) but not now!
I also think that both the devices are very good. It just depends on what you want to do from it. I want to own one of Mac device one day
Congratulations to getting 500 thousand subscribers! I hope to get an iPhone this year!
I have to agree with you. I chose the M2 Mac Mini and just upgraded the RAM (16GB) and SSD (1TB). It’s more than enough for the editing I do and I reckon it’s future proofed for the next 6-8 years. I kept my late 2013 iMac for 9 years, and I think the M2 will serve me well for the same timespan.
16GB of RAM is not futur proof. It barely can keep-up right now.
@@MartinMartin-yi9toCan you share what you are doing that 16gb ram is not enough? 16gb should be very comfortable for graphic design 😮
@@lavone5541 16GB is a bare minimum for office work. Any graphic, video and audio sould at least double that to 32GB......minimum.
I'm seeking to update my laptop to the 14-inch Macbook Pro M1 in order to stay up with my education and animation job.
Being a college student and animator, having a dependable gadget is essential, and I hope to update sometime in mid-2023.
It's understandable when finding out that u are paying the same price or even abit higher for a new product that has just launched and then you find out that there is minimum or no upgrades hence it becomes a waste of money that's why I learn it from you guys that don't be in a rush to upgrade from a 13 to a 14 make it big by upgrading from an 8 to a 13 or 14 .let the gap be big as u wait for the best of the best to be unpacked
iPad Ultra. Question, can you move your Apple software from the older to a newer device without Apple stopping it. Like I have a M1 MacBook and if I bought that device can I move the software that I bought to the newer device? Nice video.
I still have a Mac mini mid 2011 with an i5, 64g hdd 4g ram. It still renders a 3gb keynote file just fine
Hey Matt, I think you did a god decision on keeping the M2 and returning the M2 Pro as some new functions in the M2 Pro are not too good.
All great if its using it for video software designed for macs but using lightroom with layers and tabs open, more ram and larger ssd drives are needed for swap.
Mac Mini will work for low impact applications. However, my M2 Pro with 32 GB Ram kicks ass in Final Cut Pro. PLUS only two ports is a deal breaker.
only issue with the m2-pro mini is that by the time you trick it out the price approaches the Mac Studio which is even more powerful
Do you export 10bit HDR video? Does the export time make a big difference?
So do you suggest to get macbook aor instead of macbook pro?
Music producer: I would like to have a few words with you...
Which monitor do you recommend to use with your Mac mini
I am now on a MacMini2009 and it still operatres ..slow and on OS Sierra but it works o.k. With the MBP 2009 second hand i upgraded also to OS Sierra , but suddenly the screen went blank after using for a few months , lateron i found out that many people who did also the "illegal" upgrade the screen went blank too . I think Apple does have a backdoor and can screw up your computer ... So with the cheapest MacMini I am afraid its operational time will be much shorter and i dont want to have to start from scratch again. So thats why i am going for the more expensive option..
I have a Mac Mini M2 with 8 GB 256 SSD just for the every day user! I very happy with it I was going to buy the PRO M2 but I don’t do any video editing at all! 🚴♂️😎🚴♂️🌴
I agree. Only buy what you need at the moment and upgrade once you need more. Mostly cheaper than buying expensive “future proved” consumer electronics.
i got a m1 for a big discount last summer waiting for the m2, but if it was not i would have gone for the m2 pro just for 32gb of ram and four usb-c ports. never get enough ram or connectivity.
But the m1 will have to do its job for a while. Also have the 2012 i7 doing daily duty as well. the last great mini before the m1.
I'd probably go with the Pro, just to future proof it for a bit longer.
I can deal with the $599 Mac Mini because that’s the same specifications I have on my MacBook Air. I would get a huge screen for it though since I can use it for when I need to see things better than on the MacBook. Also, a portable SSD would be perfect for in case I don’t want to use up the entire hard drive built in on the device.
Remember the larger MacBook Air is coming soon...
Apple should allow after market upgrades, just like the right to fix. Is there a vesa mount for the m2 mac mini? Which hub can I get that has 10GB and ssd space in it?
8 GB of ram is not enough.
I personally am planning to go for the 32 GB of ram and a 1T of storage. Along with the higher core count. I’m a graphic designer and know how horrible the 8 GB of ram was for me back in my 2017 iMac (intel version). I’ll be specking it out for that reason.
Do you think the coming M2 Ultra , will be better than the 13th gen of i9 ? By the way lots of congrats for nearing hitting half MILLION subs ! Glad for you mate
2:23 eye on that creature on the table... Roger that. 😎
So would I be better off buying an M2 Mac mini with extra ram for Photoshop/Lightroom use, rather than a M2 Pro unit?
What monitor/tv do you use with your Mac Mini?
Apple neglected its high end power users, and seem to focusing on laptop and the mac line up. Will the mac studio see a processor upgrade, and is the mac pro worth upgrading if you can't upgrade it as it will be an all in one. With M3 and M4 chips in the future I'll stick with my M1 macbook pro.
After watching this video Matt we can see , how similar in scores Mac Studio and Mac mini Pro M2 are; which shows how unbelievable is the technology Apple Silicon . That shows also how little bit will be the gaps in the next inventions because from 3nm to 2 or 1nm will be so small Leap ( just efficiency and battery ) for very huge price. That’s stops technology because now prices matters 😮
makes sense, Mac mini m2 seems amazing
Great video as usual! My opinion about this will depend in the user needs, for myself where i edit 1080p cooking videos for my wife YT channel i believe the 8gb model is enough, but since i also work a lot with photoshop, i believe to be on the safe side to upgrade the RAM to 16GB.
About storage i honestly believe it does not worth to pay extra 200 USD for 256gb of fast SSD, instead my personal opinion is to purchase a ThunderBolt 4 40Gbps NVME case and install a 2TB Samsung 980 PRO or even the 970 PLUS and you will get around 2800 Mbps (will have the same speed of the upgraded ssd version) and will be much cheaper , for 2 TB will spend around 220 USD vs 800 USD. So you will spare almost 600 bucks :)
This year I'm planning on buying a Macbook Pro / Air / Mac Mini but I think it'd be better for me to wait till M3.
Thank you matt!
Thanks for watching
Awesome! ❤️ I've decided to save money.
I’m just curious if my work, based 100% on Garage Band and iMovie plus web browsing and writing the blog articles in Pages could be challenging to M2 8/265 or this basic model is good enough to start with? Any advice?
Base model is more than enough for iMovie even for 4k
I don't know it these encoders/decoders are so amazing. Looks like RTX 2070 is much faster, at least in Davinci Resolve renders.
You have just saved me £500. Many thanks!
Otsukaresamadeshita (Japanese word, meaning, thank you for your effort or work). Keep up with your work, really informative for us!
I am a university student. I really want to have a macbook since currently I don’t have any laptop, I am using a university laptop that borrowed by my supervisor. I also wish to upgrade from my iphone 7+.
Matt, For the M2 Mac Mini you're keeping, did you ever mention what RAM and SSD specs it has ? Did you go with the base model's 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD ?
Apologies and good question. It was the standard $599 model with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD
@@MattTalkTech Thanks! and no apologies necessary. Makes me feel better about wanting to buy the base model...
@@MattTalkTech did you find the 256GB SSD slow?
Hi notification squad here😍😍😍😍
I’m definitely going to buy the M2 Mac Mini!
id like to upgrade my old 2012 iMac, was waiting for a larger screen being released, but the m2 mini would work fine, what monitor would you recommend? thanks for any help
2011 iMac here...
I'm leaning towards the Mac Mini + Apple Studio Display....
Everything just works seamlessly with Apple...
Truly agree with you Matt for most of the people M2 Mac mini will be enough.
It is for basic productions
The link for "Product in current video" is not the M2.
What Mac Mini would you pick and why?
I think Mac mini came for low prize
The M2 Mac mini!.
@@gopalboiragi7736 Good choice
@@RaghavVijay Great choice
Maybe the M2 Mac mini.. I don't why .. but my heart say so😅
I like the comparison
Glad you liked it
If you need to upgrade base model to 16GB/512GB (dev work) then the gap between price diff lessens and M2 Pro seems the most VFM option!
Couldn’t agree more, The price gap was so small for a better processor with more core and more ports. Longevity is another thing to keep in mind.
Agree will not buy less then 16gb ram, 1Tb ssd then you can go for pro
For me the M2 pro with 1tb and 16gb ram should last 5 to 6 good years as a Family computer because not 27" iMac is out yet, and Thank You
I have a mac pro laptop 2012 with 16gb ram, 512 ssd..[ 10 years old ] I have changed the hard drive 4 times, and also changed the keyboard - a project., and ram upgrade to 16 gb.. . I will use it for video editing, & maps.. before I buy one of these welded boxes I will wait until apple someday offers the option to self upgrade memory & ssd.. i have a mac mini 2014 & was able to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD 1 TB but not the ram.. welded.. apple needs to un weld their products.. the marketing game for ssd / memory upgrades is a racket..
The normal mac mini with m2 is probably enough for most people
Hi matt,
Love your channel & videos. I would love to get the iphone 14 pro max and the MacBook pro, because i create lots of 2k/4k videos for events, mainly birthday parties and graduation ceremonies.
Thank you so much for all the effort put in the videos, they are entertaining, and very informative. Thank you for giving back to your fans by doing these giveaways. Happy 500k subscribers well deserved!!🥳 Can't wait for the 1 Million subscribers day too!
I have a 2018 macbook air so I should probably change asap haha
You made the right decision. Only pay for what resources you need.
I am still torn, I fancy the M2 Pro but cant really speck out the Ram or hard drive to what I would really like, if I get the base model I can speck out the Ram to 24 and hard drive to 1TB limited to 16 Ram and 250 Hard drive on the Pro with my budget,, want to do video, photography and design work, so what are your thoughts? Any help would be appreciated. I have to factor in keyboard trackpad and Monitor, have a tight budget.
Max out the M2 mini. I’m finding that I’m bumping up against the 16GB ram on M2Pro with light illustrator and photoshop use. I haven’t taxed it yet. It’s going back. Need more ram. That’s where your $ should go. External drives are relatively cheap.
@@DiomedesArgos Yes always needed extra ram all my machines in the past have always bumped up the ram and large external storage.
I Hope a IMac M2 with smaller price
I agree the M2 is more than enough for the average user.
I agree M2 Vs M2 Pro decision should be primarily based on your use case. I personally would go for M2 Pro Mac Mini because my primary use case would be gaming and running virtual machines. Of course, a Windows / Linux PC would offer far better value for money with this regard, but also need run Xcode for coding, plus being able to put my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro into developer mode so I can sideload apps not available via the closed Apple iPad OS Appstore ecosystem. I have yet to buy an M2 Pro Mac Mini, because I currently reviewing whether I want to remain in the Apple ecosystem. Though I am more than happy with iOS for my iPhone, I detest iPad OS and feel it makes a complete mockery of the M series iPad Pro capabilities making it an exceedingly poor value for money computing device. I am increasingly using Windows 11 over Mac OS, because I can run Linux GUI and Android apps alongside my Windows Apps. I prefer the overall functional capabilities of Microsoft Surface Pro 9 over my iPad Pro with magic keyboard even though it technically offers much higher performance, as there is extraordinarily little in the Apple ecosystem that allows you to utilise this performance. So, I find myself, waiting to see what impact the release of Nuvia arm64 processors will have on Windows PCs (targeted for end 2023, assuming Qualcomm / Arm's legal dispute doesn't get in the way - US courts tend to favour US companies!). The one thing I know, is I will never buy another M series 12.9-inch iPad Pro unless it was offered with a touch screen version of Mac OS, because let's face it, iPad OS sucks!
I am a student and I was thinking of getting a iPhone but a MacBook would also help me and hope you get to 500,000 subscribers soon
M2 is more than enough for 97% people
Agree 1,000%
97% of these people would also get better performance and longevity from their machine with 16GB or more of RAM
I can barely afford one upgrade and I have decided to upgrade only the RAM to 16 GB in the M2 Mac Mini. Do you think an upgrade of the SSD from 256GB to 512GB is also Mandatory ?
Same
16GB memory > 512GB SSD
Would it work with an 8k ( 60 Hz ) TV, with hdmi 2.1?
Mac Mini Pro supports HDMI 2.1
Mac Mini supports HDMI 2.0
I almost ordered a new Mac Mini, but I'm going to hold out one more generation. My old Mini is REALLY old... hope it makes it.
2011 iMac here..... I think I'll pull the trigger on M3 Mac Mini with 16GB / 512 SSD + Apple Studio Display
I'll definitely get the iPhone 15 Pro and possibly a MacBook Pro 14 inch this year! (if I don't win this one that is of course :D)
I returned the m2 pro aswell.
3:23 H365 🤣
Real reason why he returned it: Wife wanted the extra money in the bank :)
okay good choice sir
Hey little known fact, the return address for Apple hq where you can send back the m2 pro is actually my address. Strange right? Trust me I'm a botanist I know technology!
Lol on a real note I can see why bases on your needs you returned it.
The M2 Mac Mini is plenty powerful and the M2 Pro will not make a noticeable difference for most users.
But, people might need more thunderbolt ports and better display options…
I’ll be buying new phone this year 🤞🌝
Oh no. Apple did it so well that most of us don't need M2 Pro.
I'm considering my new computers for music production, M2 might be powerful enough but I worry about the RAM size (I'd buy an external SSD for the sound library so it doesn't matter much) and the port shortage.
But maybe a small PC is better for me if I gave up using Logic Pro.
Love mac mini, it depreciates in value far faster than the laptops, and Im already seeing quite a few M1 models for as little as £350. Give it a year or less and these M2 ones will be down in price used. Then the M3 one will be out to devalue the M2 line up.
Lucky you....
I live in S. Korea and the Apple Refurbished Store still sells Intel based Mac Minis for $1,500.00
Where do you find those deals?
