To make the choice even better, go with the M2 Pro Mac Mini & an iPad Pro. With the iPad Pro, you can use all of the Microsoft Suite apps (including OneNote) for school and you can draw or handwrite notes on it (whereas you can’t with the MacBook Pro). And use the M2 Pro Mac Mini at home for more powerful projects 🤓 With the cloud, everything you do on the iPad will transfer over to the Mac immediately. And Boom! Now you can have 2 devices for the price of one 💰 You can have even better portability, and still have a powerful desktop setup 😁 If you absolutely require M2 Pro / Max power & portability, then this doesn’t apply to you, lol. But I’m sure that’s a small minority of the customers anyway
@@User57655. On the low end, you can get an 11” M2 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard & Pencil, and the M2 Mac Mini for $1983.04, and this is cheaper than the entry level 14 inch MacBook M2 Pro of $2,170.91 (both full retail price). So yes, you can easily get 2 devices for the price of 1
This is what I have - Mac Mini M2 Pro with Dual 4k monitors in the office and iPad Pro M1 12.9"+ keyboard for home and travelling around. Can add a cheap monitor at home to connect the iPad to, but no real need at the moment
This is now my set up and for me, I see having a M2 Pro Mac Mini and an iPad Pro 11” better value and even more portable than just having a MacBook Pro.
A major feature of laptops is that they have a battery built in. What do you support as a uninterruptible power supply for a mac mini? I have never had a UPS last for more than five years, over the last few decades each time I find out my UPS has failed is during a power outage. I just use laptops now, and have not lost any data since this switch.
Good point about the battery. While you don’t separate dirty power from the device, if you are using it on the go anyways usually that becomes a moot point. Five years is actually quite a long time for UPS. I would recommend though, if you can, replace the batteries in the UPS every three years instead of the whole unit. It’s a third of the cost usually if you go OEM.
@@paladin677 i agree with @paladin677. And also with you @Daniel Paquette. However, I don't know how much of this is a practical concern. I too have a UPS and my old, work supplied, MacBook Pro is powered connected to this USP, I feel that it's redundant. I rarely take this MacBook out anywhere. Like what is suggested in this video, I use my computer 90% in place at home. I have a relatively new USP and I think that for 90% of my use case scenarios, this will be adequate. That said, I do feel like the MacBooks are a little more flexible. It all comes down to whether or not the price is worth the flexibility. I suppose that each of us will have to decide that for ourselves.
I went with the base model M2 Mini & base model M2 Air for about the same price as the base model MacBook Pro. That gives me a portable option without the laptop having to spend it's life as a defacto desktop.
Education price for MacBook 16", 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD is $2499. Mini with same specs is $1649. Difference of $850. Speakers in Mini are not good. So that adds about $100. Yes, if you already have a KBD, mouse, and monitor (which I do) then still a savings. I did order a MacBook pro with the specs quoted earlier. I do need the portability sometimes.
You brought some excellent points in this video! One thing you didn't mention regarding the portability aspect of the equation, though, which is my case and the case of many others: If your out and about workload consists of relatively simple tasks and/or lightweight programs use, and you ALREADY have an old Macbook lying around (whether it's an M1 or, as in my case, an intel-based Macbook), you ALREADY have the portability aspect of your equation. Sure, you will definitely notice the speed difference between your at-home Mac Mini and your out and about Macbook, but if your workload consists anyways of lightweight tasks or if you can reserve heavier workloads/program use when you're back home, it shouldn't be an issue. I plan on getting an M2 Mac Mini with 512GB SSD (still thinking about whether or not to upgrade to 16GB of RAM), while still holding on to my 2018 Intel i5 Macbook Pro whenever I need to do some med school related work while I'm out and about. Edit: The value of the M2 Mac Mini vs any M2-based Macbook relies heavily on whether you already have a mouse, keyboard, and - most importantly - a monitor lying around. As mentioned in the video, I'm one of those who used their macbook 90% of time in clamshell mode hooked to a monitor and therefore already had all three of those. I can see how for some people that don't already have those, the Macbooks, especially the Air, can seem like a better deal since it's an all-in-one alternative.
This video was so helpful. I’m planning to take a mac mini (m2 pro) myself and thankfully have an iPad for the ”on the go” situations. Thanks for this.
Thanks for sharing this. Would be interesting if you simulate how portable is the Mac Mini, in various scenarios say if you were to go on holiday you could have used the hotel TV as a screen etc.
The entry level Mac mini with M2 chip is a great deal for those who already have a display, keyboard, and mouse. For those, who say that it is not as powerful as the Mac mini with M2 pro chip, a PC is a better option, I think for $1300 a much powerful PC can be built.
Overall you could make a more powerful PC for $1300, but that's only if you skimp out on the CPU. Remember, the M2 is around the same power as the newest desktop core i9. If your worried about price and want a powerful GPU, build a computer. But if the CPU is the most important part to you, a mac is an absolute steal.
@Chemical_Alchemist you must be kidding i9 13900k are 3x more powerful in Cinebench R23. M2 Pro : 15000 points i9 13900k : 41000 points i9 completely destroys M2 Pro
@@Chemical_Alchemist there is no way M2 Pro/Max have around the same power as i9 chips, these are just laptop CPUs and they can't come close to desktop versions of i9s, in fact, even some mobile i7 12th processors beat M2 Pro/Max, let alone those desktop ones.
I’ve been travelling with a Mac mini and a couple of quite cheap and light 22” LG HD monitors packed face to face with the stands dismantled (takes 30s with no tools) in my checked suitcase for the last 8 years and it’s a great combo for work (I’m an engineer), and I use my iPad Pro or my phone for on-the-go writing / reading / analysis. Post-COVID travel with a checked bag has not been great so I’m experimenting with an M2 MacBook Air with the iPad as a second screen for downsized hand-baggage only travel and it seems to work quite well, but I do miss the larger displays sometimes. I’ve always been happy with the Mac Mini, though, and will probably keep it in my hand baggage, I can usually get a hotel TV to work as a monitor if I need to.
I’ve had to travel with my Mac mini once too, just brought along my Magic Keyboard + Trackpad and then connected the Mac mini to the hotel TV as a monitor 👍👍👍👍
I think my next Mac will be an M2 Pro Mac mini although I own a 14-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro. Why? I would like to put in a shelf in the wooden stand of my electric piano and put a Mac mini in there as a stationary solution for music production (and put the keyboard on the music stand beside my Komplete Kontrol M32. I am blind, and since Mac mini nowadays can run without a display with just Apple's own, built-in screenreader VoiceOver speaking, I don't even have to bother with an external screen. At the moment, I put my MacBook Pro on a laptop tripod behind the piano; but I am worried that my 2-year-old daughter might become too curious one day and pull the thing down. the Mac mini has always been a great desktop computer and the new M2 line-up is just pretty awesome. Keep up the good work with your videos! Greetings from Germany.
One aspect I dislike about my MacBook pro is that if the screen encounters an issue, I must take the entire system to Apple for repair, unlike my Mac mini, where I can simply replace peripherals without needing to send the entire device for service. As of right now I'm experiencing some sort of pixel issue with my m1 Pro macbook pro. I treated this laptop like a baby and only started to notice this issue in less than 2 years of owning it. It's such BS for me, my older 2012 macbook pro never had an issue with its screen display, it's built like a tank.
I've been using my 2014 Mac Book Pro in clambshell mode for almost 9 years. Currently looking under seat cushions for the $ to upgrade to M2 Pro Mac Mini w 32GB RAM. God Willing.
I use the Mac Mini together with my MacBook Air. With Synergy I can seamlessly work from the Macbook Air's screen to the screens connected to the Mac mini. The Mini is a file server for me and my wife. It makes Time Machine backups. It does the downloading via VPN. It does Plex and two camera systems can record to it as well so it is also a NAS. The nice thing with this setup is that I don't have cables in my MacBook Air and still be able to use big screens (2x 40" Philips TV's 4k).
I had a MacBook Air. I usually used it for home and portability was mythical reason I took it. I am now using a Mac Mini, I am way happier with it Greg. I have been bringing my Mac Mini around too since it’s so portable that I can bring it in my sling bag with the power cable and HDMI cable
Don’t forget to add the cost of external keyboard, monitor and mouse etc. chances are - the monitor will no where be close to what a MacBook screen offers!! If you add the cost , MacBook will not be that far off - comparing equivalent options
That's the fun part though, finding the accessories to go with the Mac mini. People want to talk about SAVING SAVING SAVING, but we forget that there is a huge community of people on the internet that's all about desk setups, customized keyboards, mouse, and displays. Tha Mac Mini comes hand and hand with all these other 3rd party products.
I already have a Pro Display XDR, Magic Mouse 2, Logitech 4K webcam, and a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. So instead of upgrading my 2021 16” MacBook Pro, I’ll jus keep the MacBook and get a Mac mini 2 with the M2 Pro and 32GB of RAM. Also I want to get Kanto TUK speakers.
@@retrocomputing yeah but you can't carry a monitor into your car , well you can but it's going to be really inconvenient😄 . The MacBook does have a lot to offer , and you can still plug a big screen into your MacBook if need be , and its a portable device with track pad , keyboard , speakers that is still very capable.
fair point with students life comparing when you constantly on the go to desktop sitting laptop attached to monitor. when i was a student i needed something light after my windows laptop wasnt doing very well on battery and bough ipad with a keyboard which was great for taking notes. right now my old laptop is dying and instead of looking for a macbook air its easier to just buy an mac mini and take my ipad on the go:)
I generally travel between 3 locations, home and two field offices. I have an LG monitor/keyboard/trackpad at each location, so my MBPro lives 95% of its operational life in clamshell mode. The one big thing keeping me from using a mini instead of the MBP is that the MBP effectively has a built-in uninterruptible power supply. So I never have to worry about a power drop with the laptop option. Otherwise I would have to purchase *_and maintain_* a UPS at each of my primary locations.
Yeah, I wish the Mac Mini came with a battery. All my computers have been laptops which could be unplugged at any time without any interruption. I haven't had a desktop computer since the early 2000s.
I've been a MacBook Air user for years. I might have taken my laptop(s) outside of my home for a total of five times over several years. That recently changed because I decided to trade in my 15" MacBook Air and get an M2 Pro Mac mini. I have it running two 28" 4K external monitors and it's a beast of a setup.
I just watched you video on a 75 inch TV from my Mac Mini. You are right, it's a bargain and better than having to deal with a very small Macbook monitor, a battery and an annoyig form factor. And you know what? there are plenty of TVs out there and i use my Mac Mini like a portable computer because everywhere i go (friends, hotels) i find a TV, which is big enough to enjoy my videos in a relaxed living room.
You did not explain the option for those who want to upgrade the MacBookPro, the M2 MacMini can be run using screen share via the existing MacBookPro while giving you all the advantages of the new M2 MacMini. A Step by step demonstrated setup procedure would assist many potential users who have not contemplated this option and are not quite up to the different setup process.
@2:38 “for the same specifications” - really? How long does the battery last and what’s the resolution of the screen that comes with the Mac mini? And the price difference is less after you buy a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse, right? 😆. The Mac mini is cheaper because you get less. Maybe you point that out later - and if you do - I’ll edit this - but if not, this video is pretty misleading. I do think the mini is a good fit for those that don’t need portability and already have a keyboard, mouse and monitor - or those that plan to update every year (since they only have to buy the accessories once). If they offered an M2 Max version with user replaceable memory in this format, I’d already have one ordered. (Edited) @7:20. Good job! Good advice!
It cheaper except that you have to buy keyboard, mouse and monitor. Which is probably the same as the MacBook Pro. Also isn’t the MacBook Pro on sale at Amazon for $1500
Currently using an m1 Mac Mini, Windows Desktop, M1 MacBook Air.. Surprisingly I find all of them perfectly useful for their own use case. Watching Videos/Content Writing is something I always tend to do on the iPad (have Magic Keyboard too).. While web development/photoshop/ai is something I always do on the MBA. Stuff like After Effects/Premier Pro is something for which I always turn to my Windows Desktop, and this is what I plan to replace with the m2 pro Mac mini, (even MBA M1 Air handles these tasks like a champ but the battery can go down fast and the 1st preference for such work is always a 4k Monitor).. So I would say, it’s always super hard to go with 1 of the either logic, in reality. They all have their own use cases :) If I have to pick 1 to replace ALL devices, then I’d suggest the 14inch Macbook pro (now m2).. if you can afford multiple then best to have a multi device workflow where you have a specific use case for each device, just my 2 cents :)
I'm a Mac Mini M2 convert from 15+ years of buying MacBook Pros. I have no regrets. I love using my KeyChron keyboard and my awesomely big monitor. I also switch to using a Lenovo Chromebook Flex tor travel.
I tried the M2 MBA and this was not for me. My 2020 IPad Pro was much better for my usage (web browsing, streaming) and sufficient for the go. I’m planing to buy the base Mac mini for the rare cases when a computer is better. I just bought yesterday a LG Ultrafine 4K monitor for it and my ps5 just for 160 € thanks to a promo with my company and I already have a Magic Keyboard. Thanks to my compagny gift for Christmas and The Apple Store education price, I can have this Mac Mini for 460 € ! It’s an incredible price. Can’t wait to receive it !
I can’t imagine ever using a MacBook Pro unless I require a lot of power & portability at the same time, and being that I don’t travel for work, I won’t really ever need that capability. As for literally everything else, having an iPad Pro is soooo nice!! Being able to touch your screen makes navigating through apps & tasks so much more intuitive & easier. Plus it has everything I could use for being in class at school to business & sales appointment closing large deals that people can sign digitally on the screen with the pencil. For anything else more power hungry, I can just simply do it all on my M2 Pro Mac Mini at home. Tbh I regret selling my 2020 iPad Pro 12.9” before the new 2022 ones got announced cuss the new ones are kind of a rip-off, lol. 2020-2021 iPad Pros are still solid af imo 👍🏼
5:52 yeah, it’s what I’m doing…, I have an old mbp 13inch (2016) and use it as a permanent desktop device for most time, however I still need the portability sometimes, so I bought a m2 mba (base model) couple of days ago for getting more powerful device. With the publishing of the new mac mini , I think I have another option: a Mac mini for desk and the old mbp for portability. This option can offer me a better performance and costs me less, sounds good.😄
I have been wrestling over whether to buy a MacBook Pro or the mini. I'm still using a 27" iMac from 2012, but can't even update the OS anymore! What configuration would you advise for video editing on the mini? I don't want to buy more than I need :) Thx!
Well, yes. But the MacBook is a laptop and therefore a completely different use-case. The Mac Mini is an awesome, mind blowingly awesome. Naturally you need the rest of the peripheral setup but $200 depending on your desire of super monitor and keyboard (and mouse) options
My MacBook Pro has been tethered to my desktop setup for years. I got a laptop “just in case” but an occasion to be portable never materialized. So unless you’re a student or travel for work, a Mac Mini is the more practical option. I agree with Greg!😊
This video literally explains my life. Got an M1 Air and M1 iPad Pro. My M1 Air has just been staying home ever since I got my monitor and keyboard and I only take my iPad Pro out. The m2 pro Mac mini right now, especially refurbished is looking at me
I had a mini M1, then I got the M1 max 14 inch. Mini is great for a desktop and during the pandemic I was stuck at home. But now I travel a lot and 14 inch max has been awesome to dock into my studio display or take on the plane. But I am super tempted with the m2 mini now with it's price, it would be nice to have it as a desktop and use a 15.5 inch future macbook air as a travel laptop.
I'm very close to buying the M2 mac mini as I badly need an upgrade from a MacBook pro 2013. Ive heard you can't fix mac mini's, is that true? surely they are fixable?
I do most of my work in my home office on 2014 Mac Mini. I use my iPad Pro with the keyboard case for work away. I’ve been waiting for a new Mac Mini as I already have the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and trackpad. I’m trying to figure out which one. The Pro seems to be more than I will need although I’m still thinking about it, since I tend to keep my machines for a long time.
Problem is the monitor you attach to the Mini. The only true "retina" is the studio display (aside the old LG ultrafine) and the price will skyrocket. Any recommendations on the monitor to pair with the Mini?
I received the last tuesday a mac studio and I returned for a mac mino, saving $850, for the same or better performance. This for a replacement of 2011 mac mini. I already have monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Are you going to edit video at Panera Bread? No. Laptops are for on the go note taking or work breaks where you have to continue on something graphic/dev/zoom while you're at class or your car gets worked on during business hours. I don't even think Silicon ($1000+) comes into the category for on-the-go just-in-case tech. That's a lot of insurance. I don't know what your lot is, but I'm currently upgrading my desktop to M..whatever and keeping my mid-2015 MBP until Adobe reaches through the monitor and forces me to spend more on a depreciating asset. Oh and another thing, do they have tests for the heat wear on laptops in persistent clamshell mode? I don't know of any.
I'm sitting with an M1 MacMini from 2020 that I bought in 2021, and it would be my natural choice to buy the M2 Mini. I don't need it yet because I'm fine with livestreaming and editing in FCPX, plenty of power, but I don't think I'll ever invest in a laptop again. It's either going to be another Mini or Mac Studio. The portability is solved by my iPad and I've never really done any serious work on a laptop even when I had one. But that's me.
My 11 year old son wants to get into video editing and also music editing. I am considering a Mac mini, but unsure if I should get him a M2 pro or M2. It would be a shared family computer and I am a graphic design student with an M1 MacBook Pro. Any advice?
Hi Greg, thank you for this very informative video. I think buying a Mac mini M2 Pro is an excellent idea for myself. 16 gigs of ram, and 512 gigs of memory, However, I was wondering if I can connect it to an existing iMac 2019 to use as my main screen and from my 2019 iMac I would use the Luna Display dongle to extend my screen to an iMac 2013. As of now I use the iMac 2019 and use the Luna Display to extend to my iMac 2013 as my second screen. But since my 2019 is getting tired i’m thinking about switching over to the Mac mini. I think that the pro version of the Mac mini would be the best option for me since I need a lot of ports and I do a lot of multitasking. I am also on zoom or teams all day teaching and I have a lot of applications open at the same time. However, I was also wondering if I should go with the lower version of the Mac mini and buy a dock instead for the extra ports. I don’t know if that would be a better option price wise.
I'm excited to have the M2 Pro Mac mini base model arriving on Tuesday. It'll be great to have a dedicated desktop computer again that I know will last years and years. I'll be keeping my base model M1 Pro MBP around for travel and work away from home! I just love the M1 machines
Planning on the M2 Mini Pro. I’m looking into the YT videos that show how to use your iPad as a monitor too. My old desk top is upstairs as is the monitor & keyboard I could use but plan to use the mini on the first floor where I spend most of my time. If this works out, I can use my retired iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9” (OS16.2) as my display. Do you have any information about doing this like what would I need? Thanks. Enjoyed your enthusiasm & ‘plain talk’. 🙂
Man! Get out of my head! I was just thinking about this. I need to upgrade my 2013 MBP, and I have the last intel 5K iMac. But then I started thinking as you did about my mobility. I haven't taken my MBP anywhere due to the battery being shot, and I edit from home. Sometimes I have to go to the office to edit with a client, but i can't use all of my plugins because they are on my iMac. What if i just bought an MM, since it would be a better buy than the MBP and I can still take it with me and use the HDMI to hook up to any tv (if I couldn't find a monitor for example).
I have an Alienware desktop PC with two screens and one of the two screens has a free HDMI port I'm wondering if I should get the M2 Mac Mini which is $1,099 or $1,449 here in New Zealand and add it to my setup plugged into the free HDMI port but I would also need a keyboard for the Mac Mini what would you recommend in this situation??
I have a Mac mini with 16 GB of Ram and only a 256 GB of SSD storage...BIG AND HUGE MISTAKE ON THE STORAGE. I am now forced to trading my MacMini M1 for a Mac mini M2 that has more storage. Here is the problem: When Apple upgrades their OS, I have no room for the upgrade. Even using only system apps, there is no room. I constantly have to move files around and worry about if my Mac mini will shut down apps because I went over on storage. Do yourself a favor, get the 512 or 1TB...you won't regret it.
I am considering getting the Mac mini, 16GB and 512GB storage. But I am unsure if I should get the M2 version or pay extra to get the base model M2 Pro. Mainly use for home use occasional gaming and spreadsheets. M2 Pro is better for long term but not sure is the additional price difference is worth it. Planning to keep this for 5 years.
Even the most basic cheapest M1: 8/256 still can last you for 5 years. I suggest you to buy M2 Mini (not M2 Pro Mini) because it’s just very good deal for that price
I am personally going with the M2 pro Mac Mini. For you, it sounds like going with the M2 pro would make more sense since the extra 2 CPU and 6 GPU cores would significantly help with the graphic performance. It's worth noting that Apple uses 2 chips for the 512 GB storage (256 gb each ) so your read write performance would also go up. If you can afford it, go with the base model M2 Pro. Definitely want to get 16gb of memory at a minimum these days
I’m that guy. I bought a 2020 M1 Air to use as my primary desktop. I think I’ve taken it out of the dock maybe twice in the last 2 years. 😂 I probably should have gotten a Mac mini, huh?
Let's not forget one doesn't have to worry about continually replacing overheated, swollen batteries that cause the MBs/MBPs to shut down. That is a BIG reason I would vote for the Mini along with the cost.
This is totally for me. My 2020 Intel Macbook Air has sat on my desk for nearly three years now hooked up to an external monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. It has 73 battery cycles after almost three years. Since buying it I've upgraded the monitor from a 23 inch 1080 to a 28 inch 4K which runs fine enough mostly (it's an i5 and I got the 16gb RAM).. I take it with me when I travel but almost never use it as I got the gen5 iPad Air last year. I was waiting to see if the mini got an upgrade this year and the price drop seals the deal for me. The only decision is whether to keep the old laptop or sell it. I think I'll sell it as it seems wasteful to keep it if I'll never use it. Even though it's the last Intel version it's still a nice powerful little machine that would be good for a student or something. If I can get enough to buy a magic keyboard for the IPad then I'm set.
OMG - you're in for such a treat! I upgraded from one of the same early 2020 Intel MBAs to an M1 Mac Mini ... no spoilers, but it's mind bogglingly better 🎉. And yes, the MBA will make for a fine student's laptop, mine is currently getting one of my kids through high school 🥳
Mac mini + iPad is a killer combo. Mac mini for desktop and iPad for portability. Honestly most people don’t even a laptop since you can already do most things with your phone and/or iPad
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz You’re right, it DOES depend. That’s why I said for MOST people, not ALL people. Obviously there will be people that don’t fit the “most people” category
I’m looking for something to edit my photos. Our 10 yr old all in one iMac 27” is dated and wore out, although I think I can use the wireless keyboard and mouse with a new mini. I have a new LG ultra wide 29” still in the box. Not sure if I can get by with M2 mini or should I go with M2 Pro mini?
I highly recommend getting a Mac mini with dual 27" 4k monitors for desk productivity and a MacBook Air for working around the house (good if you are a parent) or out away from home. It's the perfect setup.
Allthough when you come to upgrade the iMac (replace really) you lose the monitor. But yes. If you don't need performance, the iMac is a nice machine for basic family use
I think I've settled on getting a Mac mini but I don't know which one to get. I mainly edit video in davinci resolve on windows currently but I've heard it's much better on Mac. I use 1080p and 4k footage with lots of layers and effects. I'm so confused about which one to get because editing is so different for everyone and what is enough for one person isn't for another.
I totally agree with you. I use a iPad-Desktop Mac combination for many years now. And that works great for me. I can do everything i need on the go with my iPad and at home i have my Desktop Mac. I would only buy a MacBook if i could afford only one device. With that cheaper option in buying a MacMini i could pick up this both devices and and up at the same price level as if i has bought a MacBook and beeing much more versatile
For laptop 2024 had some great premium 14" Intel Ultra7 155H OLED touchscreen 120hz 16G 1T monsters from Lenovo 9i, HP Spectre, Asus Zenbook that absolutely smoke MacAir. And they were on sale for $600-800 open box. The best cost effective setup is a Mac Mini at home + a premium Window laptop on sale. Mac air is falling short now with apple's predatory pricing.
Can we take the Mac mini around with you? Desktops are obsolete for me with the new Apple silicon Macs. It makes me want to move around. The M2 Mac mini is still a great computer, but I would gladly pay more solely to have way more versatile user experience. I don’t want to stay in the house, which is why I’m glad the virus lockdowns is coming to an end.
I do travel with my Mac mini. It's totally my MacBook replacement. I don't own a MacBook anymore. When on small trip by train it's just the Mac mini, 16" portable USB-C monitor and ultra portable mouse and keyboard. I do work on it in the train and at my destination (friends, hotel, family). I always have my 12.9" iPad Pro with me, so I even have an additional screen via sidecar. This package is super light and compact and fits in a small backpack together with a lot other stuff. I like traveling with it. If I go by car and stay for longer time and love to do some gaming, I take the Razer Core X eGPU with me (it's Intel Mac mini and I have boot camp on it. This works fantastic, I do use this setup quite frequently when I'm at family or friends for more than a week. I love that I have this device and the freedom to travel with it and use it anywhere I have a power outlet! 1 consider modding it to 12V and powering it with a big 12V power bank..
I've been running my music studio on a 2012 mini and I've been waiting for the M2 to show up. I'm getting the M2 pro model for the "future proofing" and added ports. Yes I know I could add external thunderbolt hubs etc, but I'd rather not deal with the clutter so I'll spend the extra $ now for 32g RAM and 1tb storage hoping to get another 10 years out of this one.
@Bernie Larrivee same thinking as yours: 1TB/32G, but on more research wondering if 32GB is overkill and 16GB of memory is fine? Coming from a 2015 iMac 27" with 32GB of RAM which has been plenty.
The screen, trackpad, keyboard, and battery are worth at least $700. So if you have neither I'd disagree. But I did order the base M2 Mini, amazing value for an additional computer/server.
I have mini m1, logitech mouse, mac keyboard and this is hooked to 65' TCL Roku TV. I want 16gb m2 mini and can get $400 trade in value on m1. Have not seen offer for more than 8gb on Amazon or apple store. I love using my mac on big screen.
THANK YOU again for this informative video. My 27 inch I mac will be my monitor with a new Mac mini. Reason being my Aperture app won't work with the newer operating systems. Thank you, G
Buying a Mac Mini over a MacBook Pro does not make sense seeing as you still have to buy a screen, keyboard, mouse, etc. The cost of those additional products would most likely still equal or exceed the price of the MacBook Pro. This is not a great comparison seeing as both products are geared towards different things, portability vice stationary.
One of your best. Mac mini's are cheaper to buy even if you don't have monitor. First buy my be higher but you get to upgrade more cheaply there after.
Thanks for this, i want to buy m2 mac mini, help me to choose configuration please. I will be learning software development - coding, photo/video editing and some after effects on 1080p only. Mac Mini M2 8gb - 256gb Mac mini m2 16gb - 256gb If i buy 8gb varient i can upgrade after 2-4years and then i can buy latest 16gb ram varient, but if i buy 16gb varient, i will not be able to and keep the device for atleast 6years.
I bought M1 MBA at less than $750 late last year (Bestbuy, excellent condition). Then, compared to $600 M2 Mac mini... Then, with screen/keyboard/battery... both are good options and it depends on your need, and in my case, still M1 MBA. (I also purchased MBP with M1 Pro less than $1500, and I don't regret about it, too. It is still more than what I need.)

Where are the benchmarks? Why would you buy one? Because the benchmarks are crap. An integrated AMD chip would do much better for cheaper.

To make the choice even better, go with the M2 Pro Mac Mini & an iPad Pro. With the iPad Pro, you can use all of the Microsoft Suite apps (including OneNote) for school and you can draw or handwrite notes on it (whereas you can’t with the MacBook Pro).
And use the M2 Pro Mac Mini at home for more powerful projects 🤓
With the cloud, everything you do on the iPad will transfer over to the Mac immediately.
And Boom! Now you can have 2 devices for the price of one 💰
You can have even better portability, and still have a powerful desktop setup 😁
If you absolutely require M2 Pro / Max power & portability, then this doesn’t apply to you, lol. But I’m sure that’s a small minority of the customers anyway
But that’s a lot more expensive, no? iPads Pro is a really expensive tablet
Why not an iphone? Second hand or old version?
One thing you didn't mention regarding the portability aspect of the equation, though, which is my case and the case of many others:
If your out and about workload consists of relatively simple tasks and/or lightweight programs use, and you ALREADY have an old Macbook lying around (whether it's an M1 or, as in my case, an intel-based Macbook), you ALREADY have the portability aspect of your equation.
It still can be portable with a portable monitor
The entry level Mac mini with M2 chip is a great deal for those who already have a display, keyboard, and mouse. For those, who say that it is not as powerful as the Mac mini with M2 pro chip, a PC is a better option, I think for $1300 a much powerful PC can be built.
Overall you could make a more powerful PC for $1300, but that's only if you skimp out on the CPU. Remember, the M2 is around the same power as the newest desktop core i9. If your worried about price and want a powerful GPU, build a computer. But if the CPU is the most important part to you, a mac is an absolute steal.
@Chemical_Alchemist you must be kidding i9 13900k are 3x more powerful in Cinebench R23.
M2 Pro : 15000 points
i9 13900k : 41000 points
i9 completely destroys M2 Pro
Got the mini with education pricing, it's an absolute steal at that price.
I think the M2 Pro Mac mini is going to be Apple's perfect mid-tier desktop. Supplement that with one of the iPads and all the bases would be covered.
I have been bringing my Mac Mini around too since it’s so portable that I can bring it in my sling bag with the power cable and HDMI cable
the mac mini is cheaper in a vacuum but you need tons of accessories
Don’t forget to add the cost of external keyboard, monitor and mouse etc. chances are - the monitor will no where be close to what a MacBook screen offers!! If you add the cost , MacBook will not be that far off - comparing equivalent options
A dedicated display will be much better just because it will be bigger and will be placed with ergonomics in mind. Same for mouse and kb.
That's the fun part though, finding the accessories to go with the Mac mini. People want to talk about SAVING SAVING SAVING, but we forget that there is a huge community of people on the internet that's all about desk setups, customized keyboards, mouse, and displays. Tha Mac Mini comes hand and hand with all these other 3rd party products.
he has mentioned that already in the video.
One step ahead of you! I already ordered the base M2 Pro Mac Mini.
Do you have monitor recommendations at different price points… I’m trying to decide between Mac mini pro and MacBook Pro
(Edited)
@7:20. Good job! Good advice!
It cheaper except that you have to buy keyboard, mouse and monitor. Which is probably the same as the MacBook Pro. Also isn’t the MacBook Pro on sale at Amazon for $1500
Obviously is the MacBook Pro for $700 you don’t have to buy a keyboard and mouse monitor and speakers and did you get to move it portable
Which is faster? I mean; opening apps, web pages, internet speed etc....
This option can offer me a better performance and costs me less, sounds good.😄
Curious, do folks think the Mini will jump in price after the spring event? I was hoping to wait until their student promo in the summer.
The m2 pro Mac mini right now, especially refurbished is looking at me
It depends. Just got a MacBook Pro 14" for $1569 on Amazon. Works perfectly with Studio Display plus I can bring it with me anywhere.
Studio + Air + iPhone and you have it all.
problem is the cost of the mac monitor is the same as a mac laptop
I do most of my work in my home office on 2014 Mac Mini. I use my iPad Pro with the keyboard case for work away. I’ve been waiting for a new Mac Mini as I already have the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and trackpad. I’m trying to figure out which one. The Pro seems to be more than I will need although I’m still thinking about it, since I tend to keep my machines for a long time.
Yeah I think if you go non pro you should get 16gb but then why not go to the pro and get the 512gb space too?
And the mini comes with a free monitor?
I just love the M1 machines
same here, though I think I'm going to return my m1 pro mbp for an m2 pro. Since I'm getting my money back, I might as well.
I replace now my 2011 fully functional mac mini. That means for me 11 more years with my new mac mini.
@@albert2k dang, welcome to the world of apple silicon. Your monthly power bill will be much lighter for the next few years.
@@Dulcilady best i heard is sidecar and duo
but sidecar u get the touchpAD XD
I still have the M1 MacBook Air it’s a great machine I think it’s fast enough for about 90% of people
But what budget display do you buy for the mini? I was looking at the LG UP850 4k display.
it's your budget. you decide :)
I have a Mac Mini M1 and there is a connection problem between the mac and my LG 4k monitor. I wonder if the problem will persist in the new model
is it possible to plug a new mac mini into a 2017 27inch iMac? To use the 5k screen as the monitor?
Ya but one comes with a built in screen and mouse while the other needs purchasing!
I think I’m set for now..I have the 14 inch MacBook Pro M1 Pro (1TB/16GB)…iPhone 14 Pro Max (256GB)…and iPad Pro M2 (256GB)…
I paired a base model M1 Mac mini with a Google Pixelbook Chromebook and am pleased with the combination.
But add to the cost of the Mac Mini a monitor, speaker, keyboard, mouse, and camera with a mic.
They always get you on the upgrades though. Want it with 16gb and 512gb of storage in the UK? £1049 please.
Do you suggest a Mini M1 or M2 with a tv as monitor for video and photo editing? already have a keyboard and mouse.
Let's not forget one doesn't have to worry about continually replacing overheated, swollen batteries that cause the MBs/MBPs to shut down. That is a BIG reason I would vote for the Mini along with the cost.
I want to try a mac but also want to try World Of Warcraft, Out of M2 Mac Mini and 2021 14” Macbook pro which will run the game better ?
And yes, the MBA will
make for a fine student's laptop, mine is currently getting one of my kids through high school 🥳
I don't get it.. one is a laptop the other is not.. ??
Mac mini + iPad is a killer combo. Mac mini for desktop and iPad for portability. Honestly most people don’t even a laptop since you can already do most things with your phone and/or iPad
Depends, I can't work in a iPad
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz You’re right, it DOES depend. That’s why I said for MOST people, not ALL people. Obviously there will be people that don’t fit the “most people” category
@@drvoodoo3073 yes, true. I need feel the keyboard and run the command line and other stuff not possible on the iPad.
@@JohnSmith-zl8rz How about those specialized iPad keyboard/cover thingy?
I’m looking for something to edit my photos. Our 10 yr old all in one iMac 27” is dated and wore out, although I think I can use the wireless keyboard and mouse with a new mini. I have a new LG ultra wide 29” still in the box. Not sure if I can get by with M2 mini or should I go with M2 Pro mini?
I highly recommend getting a Mac mini with dual 27" 4k monitors for desk productivity and a MacBook Air for working around the house (good if you are a parent) or out away from home. It's the perfect setup.
Which dual 27” 4K monitors do you recommend.
Good discussion. The M1 iMac is another candidate for comparison. Comes with a monitor, mouse and keyboard!
Allthough when you come to upgrade the iMac (replace really) you lose the monitor. But yes. If you don't need performance, the iMac is a nice machine for basic family use
Glad to see MUCH better narrated videos! Growth is getting better.
I think I've settled on getting a Mac mini but I don't know which one to get. I mainly edit video in davinci resolve on windows currently but I've heard it's much better on Mac. I use 1080p and 4k footage with lots of layers and effects. I'm so confused about which one to get because editing is so different for everyone and what is enough for one person isn't for another.
get the best spec you can justify the cost of, all around M2 Pro model looks good.
Why should the Mini and a Macbook cost the same? The Macbook (Pro) has a very good screen, plus keyboard and trackpad... And is usable on the go.
I totally agree with you. I use a iPad-Desktop Mac combination for many years now. And that works great for me. I can do everything i need on the go with my iPad and at home i have my Desktop Mac.
I would only buy a MacBook if i could afford only one device.
With that cheaper option in buying a MacMini i could pick up this both devices and and up at the same price level as if i has bought a MacBook and beeing much more versatile
its also a greener option: batteries are terrible to manufacture.
"I know people who never move their laptops." This is me.
You are paying a premium for portability and a built-in monitor.
Costco currently has the Mac Mine M2 Pro for $1099. Great deal.
Mini + ipad would be perfect combo but in my country with daily power blackouts it’s better to have battery built in
I've been running my music studio on a 2012 mini and I've been waiting for the M2 to show up.
Trackpad 100 key keyboard 100 screen 150-200 400 at most
It's good to see all of these so that folks have choices based on their needs. I'd buy one of these MBPs in a heartbeat if I needed one.
Very good well thought out video. Thank you.
Mac Mini M2 8gb - 256gb
Mac mini m2 16gb - 256gb
If i buy 8gb varient i can upgrade after 2-4years and then i can buy latest 16gb ram varient, but if i buy 16gb varient, i will not be able to and keep the device for atleast 6years.
how long do laptops usually last in clamshell mode like mentioned in the video?
I bought M1 MBA at less than $750 late last year (Bestbuy, excellent condition). Then, compared to $600 M2 Mac mini... Then, with screen/keyboard/battery... both are good options and it depends on your need, and in my case, still M1 MBA. (I also purchased MBP with M1 Pro less than $1500, and I don't regret about it, too. It is still more than what I need.)
