I was browsing for Mac all in comp but didn't know this was an option. Huge $ difference, thank u!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thank you for the video, this will save me quite a bit of research time.
I plan on getting a Mac Mini M2 shortly.
I have a Dell touch display at present.
Thanks for sharing and good luck.
As an artist, I have to use the HDMI port on my M1 Mac Mini for my pen display, so I went from three monitors with my Intel Mini to just two.
Solved my monitor space issue by getting an LG DualUp, which is basically double 2k monitors.
Now I have the "three" monitors on my Mini.
Great video. Simple, useful information.
Thanks for sharing that info and for the feedback on my video. Appreciate it.
I bought the M2 Pro 2 days ago and just hooked it up to the monitors my M1 was using, and LG 32 in. and an LG 70 in. They are working beautifully.
They are nice machines for sure. Thanks.
Is the 120hz working with 4K correctly?
Wow just solved my monitor selection for my M2. Thanks a million
Thanks for watching
Which u got
I went with the Dell S2722QC. Perfect size, love the swivel mount, and the USB-C connectivity. That frees up my MacMini's HDMI port for a digital tablet. Takes a bit of calibration for color out of the box, and the four-button controls are a little dated, but otherwise a great monitor for the price. It is discounted on BestBuy and Amazon right now.
Thanks for the recommendations
I'll make a second video as there are many more too. Thank you for watching.
Great thanks for this video, man. It will definitely help me choose the right monitor for my Mac Mini M2 Pro that I intend to buy. I appreciate your work
Thanks for watching. There are a ton out there for sure and I always tell people these videos are just a starting point and then do the research and pick the best option for you. I appreciate the feedback for sure and thanks again for posting.
@@craigneidel Yes, I realize that each one of your recommendation videos is just a starting point, which you also said in this particular video. If people like you have tested the pieces of equipment they are talking about, the best thing I could do myself is to listen to those recommendations and choose what seems to be the best for me, because I can't just take such pieces of equipment and test them myself, even any other than those tested and recommended by such other people. Thus, the best thing I can do is to rely on such recommendations, at the same time bearing in mind that the final choice is mine. All in all, then, taking the testing part into account, it is why I appreciate recommendation videos such as yours 🙂
Is it possible to use an old iMac as a monitor?
Thanks. Very informative!
Thanks for the feedback.
I have been using a Dell UltraSharp U3223QE for many months now with my Mac Studio and I think it’s great! Very good color accuracy for those who need it and it is absolutely bursting with connectivity! It might save many people the cost of a external dock. The build is quite good and the stand is height adjustable. I was considering an Apple Studio Display, but ultimately I could not justify the cost. By the time I added Apples adjustable stand and anti reflective coating it would have cost twice what I paid for the Dell. Plus I really wanted a 32 inch to help a bit with my aging eyes. All around, a great monitor for the price.
Thanks for sharing as this helps people trying to decide. Also, thanks for watching Murdock.
Great man! How’s the text clarity?
Do you rescale ?
@@Romeo-pd9qx I am not running at native resolution, I have a couple of different settings I use depending on how good my eyes are working at that moment. Seems to work great at many different resolutions.
@@itsjfoster I don’t do a lot with text these days, my eyes aren’t what they used to be, and I am not doing coding. So take my advice with a grain of salt. Having said that, I am completely happy with the text sharpness.
Like this type of video. Looking for more!
Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.
Great look at monitor options. Would you consider doing a video that talks about the pros/cons of different monitor resolutions when paired with a Mac Mini (M2 Pro). I have an old 27” iMac 5K (2015) and wish Apple did not kill the ability to use it as an external display. What can I expect to experience if I go with a 2.7K vs 4K vs 5K monitor with a new M2 Pro Mini? Is the big jump in cost between the 5K and 4K monitors really worth it? In what type of scenarios / workflow would it make a big difference (note my eyesight is not great, so I cannot really see small text well anyway). Thoughts?
Depending on eyesight it could change things but I find the 5K is easier for me to read. Also, now that I'm so used to the 5K and 4.5K (with same PPI) I really don't want to change back to 2.7 or 2K monitors if possible. I think there is a massive difference but in the end it's nothing more than a luxury really and if I didn't have my Apple tech channel I most likely would have still been on a 2K display. Depending on budgets for people I fully understand 5K is not always the best choice.
Very helpful - thanks.
Welcome and thanks for watching
Thanks for the inputs, I have three 4K monitors, absolutely OUTSTANDING resolution, all under $250 (when on sale), AOC - 27", Samsung 28", and INNOCN 27". I read reviews about the Samsung M8 and a lot of Mac users are having problems with it. BTW, all are interfaced with various Macs to include the Mac Mini M1~ Good video Craig...
Thanks, I'll make a few more of these videos as there are a ton of good options.
You are having a Turkish, it cost me a monkey down here.
@@reverendbluejeans1748 not sure what you are saying

Just bought the LG 42 C2 for 700€. And....if your desk is big enough and you choose the correct settings...it is fantastic!!! Have mine with the M1 Air.

Got a m1 Mac mini, bought it cos i use my tv monitor! Bigger than 30inch and perfect for it. I don’t now if I’ll buy a computer monitor someday but right now the TV is brilliant cos hdmi! Reason why I always wanted a mini.
Yes some people run then on tvs just fine. Thanks for posting.
Best budget 4K I've found is the AOC U2790VQ 27". I've been very surprised by it's performance for under $300. It's not what you might want to use if you're dealing with high-end photography or video, but it's a pretty sweet budget option.
Thanks for sharing I'll need to check it out.
Thank you for sharing! I'm doing a film documentary for my student project. I will film with 4k footage. I plan on buying Refurbished Mac mini Apple M2 Pro Chip with 10‑Core CPU and 16‑Core GPU and I'm looking for a monitor to go with. Do you think that I can use AOC U2790VQ 27" with Mac mini?
@@thuytrinhnguyen8497, Absolutely. It’s got an HDMI and DisplayPort input so it’ll work just fine.
4k 27” is a waste of money, just get a 2K 27” and experience a better monitor ! You need 5K or higher for 27”.
Very informative video!
Thanks for watching and the nice comment. I hope it helps.
This is a great video! I'm a Graphic Designer and I'm looking for a monitor for when I upgrade to the M2 Pro. But my budget is $500 or less. I was hoping to buy a single wide monitor to replace the two I'm using now but I'm not seeing anything that I feel is a good fit.
Thanks for the feedback and good luck with your search.
I’m using a Gigabyte M32U for the main monitor and a Benq GW2780 for the second monitor. Happy with that setup.
Thanks for sharing that setup for others to consider.
Great video with lots of good information. Having said that you could improve your dialog immensely if you cut down on using the word basically. In many cases it doesn’t even make sense in the content your explaining. Keep up the good work.
Yes, just a hobby now and but eventually I will use a script/screen to address that. Right now it's due to filming all this on a crazy schedule since I work about 50 hours on my normal job. But one day I hope to address it. Thanks for watching.
Hi Craig, Thank you for your episode on new monitors for a new M2 Mac Mini and the Pro version. Have you done an episode on using existing iMac computer screens with a Mac Mini. I like my screen, I don't need total visual quality. My iMac is a Late 2015 - 16.2) 21.5 inch (Model # A1418). It has 4 USB3 ports, 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports and an Ethernet connector. Thanks in advance for your time to review this inquiry. Eric
Thanks for watching. I have not done a video like that but really with the newer iMacs like 2015 and 2017 you need something like Luna Display as they can't be used for external displays otherwise. I may do a video on this in the future but need to get that planned out and see if Luna can send me a test unit.
Hello! Really good info 🙌🏼 Do you know if I can connect a mini Mac M2 to a mid 2014 IMac to use it as a monitor?
Thanks. You can read this article and go down to where it says Target Display Mode. Thanks again. - 9to5mac.com/2023/02/05/use-imac-as-monitor/
I once heard that getting 4k monitors for computers such as this one or the macbook pro is kind of a bad idea because of resampling or wahtever the correct term is... it uses a ton of resources and slows down the machine (that's why apple monitors are 5K). Is there anything you can tell me about it?
To be more precise, the correct output is supposed to be 5K, so it has to sample it back down to 4K, again I'm no expert, just watched that video and now I don't know what to get.
I have not seen that lately. I'm sure some monitors don't play well with Macs and have seen quite a few. But I don't think it applies to all 4K monitors out there and not from my experience using them.
Thanks for the suggestions Craig. I've got the ASUS ProArt 27 2K, and it is an excellent choice for someone who doesn't need, or can't afford, a 4K monitor.
Thanks for the info Bryan.
Hi! Interested in getting this one, does it scale good for os? Got a Mac mini m2.
@@itsjfoster Yes, it scales perfectly on MacOS.
@@bryans8656 thanks! to clarify you’re referring to the 1440 p model? I do have that one and it’s blurry text. Any tips?
@@itsjfoster Hmm, I don't have that problem but I always use it at the native resolution (1440p). Maybe I was too quick with my response.
Another option, if 1440p and used is acceptable is the venerable Apple Thunderbolt Display. I just bought an M2 Pro Mac Mini, and hooked up my Thunderbolt Display using an Apple Thunderbolt 2-3 adapter. Aside from a great display and great sound, there is the built-in “dock” featuring: 1 TB pass-through port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, 1 FireWire 800 port, three USB A 2.0 ports, and a 720p FaceTime camera. I like having the extra USB ports to plug in my legacy (USB 2) devices without wasting a TB4/USB4 port. The FW 800 port lets me connect legacy drives still kicking around, and the Thunderbolt pass through connects 4 external drives via a pair of TB to eSATA adapters. For me, it is an ideal solution, and gives me time to save for an eventual Studio Display.
Thanks for sharing this. It helps out viewers for sure. Thanks.
What is the model number of the Thunderbolt Display?
@@pamtolson5076 Model Number: A1407
Great Video ! Question: I have a 27 inch IMac, is there a way to use it as a monitor only and run it off a mac mini 256 ?
What year? If it's a 5K iMac then it doesn't have target display mode. So no but you can try something like Luna Display which makes it possible but costs money etc.
I have just added an LG 42” OLED. It’s not Retina but the real estate and color is tremendous.
Thanks. I hope to try that later this year.
I have a Xaiomi 34” widescreen monitor hooked up to my older 2012 Mac mini using the display port (3440 x 1400px res). I have this problem that I have to increase the zoom and scale for most apps to have them look like they did back on my previous smaller Samsung 24” monitor (1080p). Some apps or plugins don’t offer this scale feature, so they appear rather small. I am wondering if I bought a newer Mac and another widescreen, it will be much better ? Also, if I change the resolution on my widescreen to say 2400 to make it look bigger, the text and screen text is quite blurry and poor. I am planning to maybe buy a newer MacMini M2, but wondering how this will really be on a widescreen? I see there's not much mention about any widescreeens here. Perhaps buying dual monitors is best? Thanks
There are literally hundreds of different setups so I would just research the monitor and then read the comments or email the seller to confirm your setup will work. Even cables matter with individual monitors so it's a tough one to answer for sure.
Great video! Could you also recommend some nice compact speakers for the M2 Mac mini as well?
creative pebbles or logitech's compact speakers (i can't remember their name).
I should do another video on speakers in the coming month or so and please check my channel for that in the future.
When I got my M1 Max Mac Studio, I was replacing a 5K iMac from 2014. I didn’t want to drop down to a smaller screen. At the time I didn’t see enough price difference from the Studio Monitor for another 5K one to bother with, so that’s what I bought. Later I saw the comparable LG (same display even) on sale for about $1100, so I got it as a second monitor. Obviously this is not a budget system, but it is one I should be happy with for years. For me, anyway, it is a false economy to get something that will make me want to upgrade in a couple years or less.
Yes, the Studio is a great monitor for sure. It all comes down to budget and for people that have lower budgets the 4K monitors are normally just fine. Thanks for watching the channel.
i have LG UltraFine 27MD5KL-B 5K but i`m so waiting for s9, i think thats the perfect monitor for me
We need to see how much the S9 will come in at but it does look like a great option to put some competition on the Studio Display.

(Benq PD2705Q ) Does this Benq monitor support/compatible with the base model of mac mini m2 ???
I would just make sure the connections work but it should work with any Mac.
I love my Mi TV 4K, 43" monitor! It was cheap. Big screen in front of my face. I watch NFL and NBA full screen. I love it. It's a 43" 4k TV. It works

Need Some Advice
We recently purchased the M2Pro and bought a Sceptre Monitor 27" 1080p 75hz with it. I thought it was going to be a good monitor but it just doesn't look great, the picture and menu bar are too big and I have adjusted every setting I can. I have a few questions. Really if you do 4k is that going to be a safe option? Do you recommend curved or flat? What do you think is better 27 or 32" assuming one monitor? What about TV monitors? Thank you for your input.
Hello Eric. I would determine a few of the monitors that you like and then do research and review comments on Amazon or email the manufacturer to see what they say. There are so many variables like what connection works best with what monitor that in the end it's really hard to say what might be right for you. I myself like flat monitors and I have 24" to 32" depending on where I have it. I know this isn't much help but if others can post here on their individual experiences it will help everybody.
@@craigneidel Thank you. So if you had to pick between 27 & 32 would you go 32?

Connect a Dell u2723qe using the usb c (wich transfer data video and provides 90 watts) to the thunderbolt 4 of the mac mini could be damage the mac mini because this computer doesnt need external energy support? Please help me

Thank-you for good advice. I already have BenQ Pd2500Q 25 Inch 2K Designvue Designer Monitor using with PC and now thinking if buying a Mac Mini 2 pro. Would that be compatible with that given it has no usb C port and I/O is HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.2
Really appreciate if anyone can help me.
I have not tested that monitor but I would simply post that question to BenQ and they should be able to tell you right away. I don't see why it would not work but that is the best way to confirm.
I am currently using the Dell UltraSharp U3223QE monitor with my Windows computer which is great monitor. As I am diving into iOS apple development I would really loved to know how that would perform with the Mac mini. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. That should work good for you.
Thanks for giving the 60hz, etc. I did wonder if 75hz works ok on Mac mini m1?
I always say to research the individual monitor and see what others are saying on performance and other items. There are so many monitors that is really all you can do when you narrow down a choice.
Very informative video. I plan on purchasing a Mac Mini M2 Pro; I think I can hook up one Studio Display via Thunderbolt, and two of the Dell S2722Qc monitors, one via Thunderbolt and the other using HDMI to HDMI. I have heard that Thunderbolt to HDMI adapters won't work when trying to connect 3 displays. Can you confirm that this arrangement will work? Thanks.
Thanks Mike. I'm not sure since I don't have the Studio Display but it sounds like that setup should work. I just can't test it out. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
I now have the set up I mentioned above, and I can confirm that it works fine.

@@andrewmuniz3201 I have been using two of these along with one Apple Studio Display. No problems, and they are almost a perfect match. I like them a lot. It might be possible and there are a few videos on that on UA-cam if you do a search. Good luck and if I try this in the future I'll let you know.
@@craigneidel No, 2011 iMac will not work with Apple silicon.

I think some of that depends on cable etc. and I know it's not a universal issue but I haven't tested different configurations so I would read the Amazon comments or email the company.
Thanks for video. I may consider a Mac Mini in the future. In your comparisons it would help to discuss speaker capabilities and potential video cameras that work well. Just a general video on general setup instructions would help as well. I’m really a novice when it comes to coupling pieces together to achieve what one gets with a complete system like an iMac.
Has anyone ever considered a MacMini with a smaller screen for travel purposes versus a Mac laptop (which are outrageously priced)? Thanks.
Thanks for posting. I don't think many people travel with the Mac minis with a travel screen due to power needs (no battery on Mac mini) but I have seen it done before on a few channels. It can be done just not optimal I guess.
Can you hook up an old 2010 imac desktop monitor. I really don't want to buy a new computer if I can just hook up to my 2010 desktop. Is it recomeneded?

Thanks for the suggestions Craig. I don’t really need a 5k but need an apple monitor. Apple products last long. Also integration is seamless. If I want to control the brightness or volume of the monitor, I can do from the keyboard but can’t if I use monitor from other brands. 5k is the only monitor that apple has. Right?

All 4K monitors may have slightly reduced text clarity if running in 4K but I really don't see too much of it with my eyes. You can try running at 1440P as that is half the Mac normal res and it could clear it up but of course that's not 4K. Also, make sure you are running a cable fast enough for the connection.

Does it work with an 8k ( 60 Hz ) TV with the HDMI 2.1 cable??
Don't think 8k with HDMI
@@craigneidel Thunderbolt, only??
I did tried connecting to my oldest Dell ultrasharp 2007
Using vga to hdmi adapter no display comes up not boot screen
Not sure about how a 17 year old computer would work with these monitors.
@@craigneidel I did bought Mac mini M2 tried work with 2007 Dell ultrasharp using hdmi to vga adapter didn’t post at all
I would think my monitor was too old or buy new monitors
Only last choice buy apple adapter maybe aftermarket adapter cause the issue
Yes, the 2007 seems to be an issue on the newer monitors.
Does 2K resolution enough to experience Mac well for first time?
I think so. The iMac and other screens are just so good that once you see those it's hard to go back but if you are coming from 1080P then I think so.
Wish you’d included some Benq monitors. And I don’t think anything you showed was truly on par with your own Studio Display. I’ll probably go deeper in hock and also go with the Studio Display.
I made a new video yesterday and it has a benq in there.
Does the Mac Mini M2 support 3440x1440? I can’t find the answer to this anywhere. Thanks!
Here is some info I found that has to do with scaling -
They said.... "And use 2752 × 1152 (HiDPI) as the Display Resolution in Settings. (For the record I'm using 34" displays)
This is the effective resolution of 3440x1440 at 125% scaling and offers by far the best viewing experience of everything I've experimented with."
@@craigneidel thank you so much for the reply!
@@dylanwalsh5105 welcome and thanks for watching
I think I will wait and see what the S9 looks like in person. I've seen the Studio display and for the price underwhelmed. Also a bit nit-picky but I'm I the only one who thinks their should be the apple logo on the front? Or if I can find a thunderbolt display on the cheap I will give that a go.
Yes, I'm waiting to see what the S9 is going to be like also. I hope its great and maybe it will also help bring down the cost of the Studio Display as a added bonus.
Thanks for the video. I am thinking of buying Mac Mini M1 or M2 with Asus Proart 27 2k monitor, but I am undecided instead if IMAC24. Do you think the quality difference of the retina display and Asus is very evident? I have a MacBook Air M1 and the display is really beautiful, I would not like to regret to take the Asus even if it would be better for the amount of doors and to collapse to a second PC. What do you think?I use it for assembly amateur video and some say that the retina display even if wonderful is not faithful in the colors for videos or photos. Thank you very much
I have the ASUS ProArt 27 2K monitor and it's an excellent budget alternative to 4K, but it certainly doesn't match the resolution (it isn't "retina" quality).
@@bryans8656 Ok, thank so much
Yes, once you are hard to very high resolution monitors it's harder to go backwards but it just comes down to budget. I love my 24" iMac and maybe wait and see if they will update the 24" this year and that could be a great option too. If you do a ton of work and need a good monitor I might say get the iMac but get 16 GB Ram etc. and it should handle everything. You can find them for about $1,200 with upgraded ram on the Apple refurbished site.
@@craigneidel thank so much for the answer and for video
@@Silvia-tu2lj Thanks again for watching the channel.
Does anyone make a monitor with a usb hub and an ssd enclosure?
Not the SSD enclosure that I saw. But there are a ton of M2 hubs with SSD enclosures and I have done a few on my channel and have a few more coming soon.
I'm getting a Huion Kamvas Pro 4k. 1300 dollars, but it is a Pen Display where I will be able to write on. Quite honestly, and in my opinion, way better than just buying a simple display.
Let's us know how it goes.
Hey Rafael ! Are you able to install softwares like toonboom on this setup …over all how was the experience
I am spoiled with an iMac Pro with a second display (Apple Thunderbolt Display), but I want to move to an M2 based computer.
They are nice systems for sure.
I just got a new Mac Mini M2 Pro and bought a 27" LG UltraFine 4K Display and it works well. Has a number of Thunderbolt ports on the back as well as an HDMI port. I'm wanting a 2nd monitor so I will wait a bit and possibility see what the Samsung S9 looks like when available.
Yes, the S9 is going to be nice but fully going to come down to price. Or the $1350 refurbished Studio will still be the best. Thanks.
Thanks for the great review. I have Model:LU28R550UQNXZASKU for main monitor which is awesome...($299) and now I picked up a Model:LS24R35AFHNXZASKU ($99) love them both. The cheaper one is just for data so no need to be 4k..thanks
Thanks for sharing this info as it helps people make decisions. There are a ton of choices out there for sure and letting people know what works good is helpful for sure.
I think some people had problems with the Samsung S9. Having said that the LG Dual UP is awesome if you like to think out side of the box.
S9 isn't out yet here but we will see if we can review it when it comes out. Thanks for watching.
@@craigneidel My bad. It was the Samsung Neo G 9 that had issues. The LG Dual is awesome and different.
Ok, thanks and good luck.
I had a Dell U2723QE it and returned it. It's been completely hyped with marketing. The stand is very wobbly and I wasnt' impressed with the display either. It's also very hard to get to the inputs in the back of the monitor. It has a joystick which is not all that great. Get a BenQ if you have a Mac. The PD 2706U and UA are the best buys.
I just did a review of a Benq a few weeks ago and it was all positive.
I’ll use this with my Apple Thunderbolt Display
That will work great too
Great video and information. And no hate here, but would you please try to slow down? I kept having to rewind every 30 seconds to try to catch what you were saying. I’m sorry if this sounded rude, not my intention
Thanks for the feedback. I try but I usually am trying to keep the length of the video shorter for people also. In the end I also have a normal job and need to do this pretty quick, but in the future I hope to have more time to plan and use a teleprompter so I can slow down a bit. I have heard that before for sure but normally talk off memory which means I go quite fast. Thanks for watching and I hope you can sub if not already.
I wish monitor manufacturers could add:
1. Glossy Screen - Matte screens are not as rich and the colors look washed out...
2. Great Webcam
3. Great Speakers
4. Aluminum enclosure similar to Apple
I hope this is coming with the Samsung Viewfinity S9 if it comes out in the near future.
rereading this comment a few months later and feel frustration that these simple things have been ignored.
I got an oled 32”. Think i’m good, nice hdmi to usb cable, it’s a lot nicer and half the price of that apple screen.
Good luck and that is a nice large display for sure.
I currently have a 27" mac, can I use it as my monitor with the M2 mini
All monitors are different but I would assume yes. The size really doesn't matter.
@@craigneidel the 27” is the 2012 Mac computer. Not just a monitor. Will it work with the mini? Do they just wipe out the OS on the 27”?
@@debbiesheets5585 Sorry to say that your 27" iMac cannot be used as a monitor.
You can use something like Luna Display - check that out.
I have tried several displays via HDMI on my Mac Mini M2 Pro and they all flicker. So far only thunderbolt displays have worked properly.
All monitors may need to use specific connections like USB-C etc. But I have not run into too many issues especially with the monitors listed but I would read the comments on Amazon to see what connection works best for Mac users.
Does it work with the samsung g5?
Any monitor should work with a Mac but I would look online for people that did that and how it worked out for them.
Don’t 4K monitors consume a ton more GPU on the Mac Mini?
Not really, the M2 Mac mini can run 5K just fine also.
Thanks for putting this information out. I was waiting on a new 27” iMac . That does seem to be the current Apple direction. The company is confused at the moment
Thanks. Yes I hope for the 27 inch imac but I'm guessing it's a long shot.
Yup, in same boat as you. I don't want 24" iMac.
@@bennym1956 27 is better in so many ways but it would compete with studio display. I hoping but not expecting anything.
