  • Today we answer the question, do bucktails look drastically different under sunny skies vs overcast skies?
    Do fish see the bucktails differently?
    We take 4 popular colours and styles of bucktails and go underwater and show you how they look under both sunny conditions and overcast conditions.

    Hey Glenn. Cool idea! I was also going to mention the looking up aspect - maybe a bit more of a difference picking up the different colours on the contrasting sky, but to your point - maybe the fish don't care? I think you should always make Dave use the opposite colour you're using until one of you statistically has caught more fish! 😉 Great video!

      Thanks for watching! That's a cool idea for next season, we each pick a colour pattern and run with it. I like that.

      Yeah, the way they contrast the sky would be very interesting and possibly the more telling factor. Great video as far as side on goes.

    Would definitely be interesting to see this in stained water too! I wonder if it would look different with a bottom, looking up view with the sky color? I have no idea if that would make a difference, but the fish are going to be looking up at the baits with the sky color being the backdrop. Awesome idea with the video!

      We'll try do a couple in some stained water. And interesting you say the up looking view, with the sky as the back drop, we have that view on some top waters coming up in a new video. Thanks for watching!

      Agree. I would like to see the baits silhouetted against clear and overcast

    I couldn’t tell the difference, I have had great luck using blue or purple bucktails on stained water on bluebird sky days. Great video Glen.

      Thanks for watching Mitchell! I don't think there is a huge difference, in clear water.
      I think too much is made of picking lure colour based on the skies.
      We will try a quick comparison on tanic water, I really doubt we will see a big difference. I think its been a lot about nothing over the years. Pick the color that gives you, the angler, confidence and go fishing!

    Great breakdown dude, that was awesome! It was interesting how the color of the blade definitely glowed more in sun, I realize that is to be expected but it was interesting to see in real time! Keep the tackle talks coming!

    The little flash in sunny weather is great with the shiny baits. One perspective to think about is seeing the above angle when fishing. I fish off my cuddy cabin and about 3-4 feet higher than the water. The little flash on sunny days does create strikes with that flash. Love this video.

    • @54orbust
      @54orbust  Рік тому

      Thanks for that! Appreciate you watching! It is water clarity dependant to some degree. But I agree, some flash can really trigger on sunny days!

    Underwater fall rate on different rubbers like musky innovation, chaos, lake x, etc. Sometimes the “hang” or the fast drop triggers during different times. Be interesting to see that from a fish perspective

    I feel like water color is what matters most. Clear water running your blacks or browns seems to work, gold blades is ok too. Then greenish tinted water i throw the oranges, greens, firetigers, pinks.

    I know this may sound a little " off " but I don't really pay alot of attention to color. I use more bright colored blades and dark skirts. The dark skirts for profile and really bright blades for my own benefit. I can simply pick up the bait further away from the boat and start looking for followers

    • @54orbust
      @54orbust  Рік тому

      That certainly works, as black or smoke blades can be very hard to pick up visually on the retrieve.
      How much it truly matters will be debated for years.
      Pick the colour you have confidence in would be my first consideration.

  • @jheiny1231

    My go to is black or darker natural colors on sunny days. And brighter baits on cloudy days. I swear by this. Most people are the opposite but my results in most cases are better than other peoples results on the same waters that same day to what I witnessed over many years. So thats what I stick with and have confidence in.

    Awesome video, thanks! Our home lake is a western MN clear lake, so this is super useful for me. I too was surprised that the lures looked similar under different lighting. Knowing that is useful, though. I love all of your underwater comparison videos, you do such a great job. I'd love to see more on dive and rise baits, twitch baits, or crankbaits. Thanks!

    I think that what we or the camera see under the water is totally different than what the musky sees. I would assume they can see clearer and farther than we think. but in your example I did see a little difference. sunny the flash was sharper reflection and the body kind of absorbed with the back ground. cloudy day the flash was more saturated or didn't seem to travel far, and the body stood out a bit, more like a blob not seeing the skirt move or the tinsel flash. just my crazy thoughts. lol

    • @54orbust
      @54orbust  Рік тому +1

      I think your right on all accounts.
      And I don't think it's always about silhouette with muskies. When they are in weeds or on shallow rocks they pick up bucktails as they move beside them.
      It's hard to say what they actually 'see' but it's a good comparison for us anglers at least.
      Appreciate you watching!
