Rob's Model Shop - Episode 1 "Groot". In this pilot episode, I go through the process of downloading a free 3d model, then finish it into a one-of-a-kind collectible.
Good stuff Rob. I've heard of "dry brushing" before but didn't understand how it worked. Also, the epoxy on the eyes is a sweet trick. Thanks for sharing!
Rob Pauza no worries, I'm a 3D modeller myself and found this as I am modelling a baby Groot and was looking for inspiration for the texturing process..
What was your layer height ? I myself am printing a model with a .16mm slyer height and would like to know how it'll turn out. Also, I'm printing in Hatchbox Wood PLA; any tips or suggestions for painting/finishing a more matte/porous surface ?
I used .1mm layer height. There’s so much texture, you really can’t do much sanding. Well... I would normally suggest a good primer coat before painting, but that probably defeats the point in printing with wood filament.
Thanks Adans! The compressor is on the floor about 2 feet from me. It has a tank, so the compressor doesn't run all the time. When it does, it still isn't super loud, but you can definitely hear it. :)
I've used resins a few times for casting, and you just have to be really careful stirring to not introduce bubbles. The "professional way" around it is to use a pressure pot so it cures under pressure. That will compress the resin and force most of the larger bubbles out. -Not exactly an option for most people. There are other products out there that should work though. I used epoxy, but you can use Crystal Klear or any other clear drying product. Or.. just a simple gloss coat would work as well.
Hi another question I've had to use a slight difference colour to buff and and almost at the inking part is it ok to use the army painter ink strong tone as dont have any tamiya panel line accent color?
Hi Paul, I'm not familiar with army painter ink, but any sort of wash should work. The Tamiya panel line color is actually a thinned ink, so I'd say it will be fine. I would spray you model with some sort of clear coat to protect it first if you can.
Paul Williams I’m guessing that should be fine. You just want something to seal in the work you’ve done already. Then if you make a mistake on the wash part, you can take it off without messing up your other painting. They at the end, just spray with some sort of matte. Good luck.
The .stl file is still available on thingiverse. You can take that .stl and have it printed at Shapeways or any other 3d printing company. www.thingiverse.com/thing:2014307
Hi Paul. I generally never change psi, which is probably bad. :) But... I have good luck using around 50psi. That's pretty high, but the paint I'm using doesn't dry before landing on the surface since I'm always adding some airbrush flow improver to thin it a little. Also, running a little higher keeps the tip from clogging as much.
Probably the best Baby Groot model I have seen
Thanks a bunch! The 3d model itself was done incredibly well by Byambaa, so credit to him. Thanks for the comment!

Rhonda E. Rutherford Thanks so much Rhonda! I appreciate the comment.
Well any fool, like me, can 3D print, but to paint it like that takes a high degree of skill. Well done sir!
Stunning finished detail ever on Baby Groot..
Dude this was a brilliant watch. My whole family sat and watched. Subbed.
Thanks so much for the comment. There's more on the way!

Amazing work and video. Question : How far is your compressor? (there is no noise at all)
Thanks Adans! The compressor is on the floor about 2 feet from me. It has a tank, so the compressor doesn't run all the time. When it does, it still isn't super loud, but you can definitely hear it. :)

what kind of epoxy glue do you take for the eyes?
I typically use just regular 5 minute epoxy. (brand is Bob Smith Industries) When you mix, take care not to introduce bubbles.
@@RobPauza thank toi vert Much.
It will be valuable in the future.

Thank you for the comment. I appreciate it!
Hi I've got to doing the eyes but tried a two part resin on a piece of plastic but was impossible to get air bubbles out any advise?

Is galeria gloss varnish ok ?

y la tuya no la vendes?
what kind of epoxy glue do you take for the eyes?
I just use 5 min epoxy with a toothpick. Give it at least an hour before touching or you still may get finger prints. 👍
