  • My friend Bill of Punished Props 3D printed me a Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. He used his Ultimate 2 to make it.
In this video I show you how I painted it to make it look like the one in the movie.
We got the file and info from Joel over at 3D printing Nerd.

He came out looking pretty cool. As someone who paints models and miniatures for a hobby, I can appreciate the work that went into this, especially the added touch of the epoxy on the eyes. If you apply a coat of gloss or semi-gloss varnish before you apply the wash, it makes the whole process a lot easier; the wash flows very easily down into the recesses and because things have a hard time sticking to a glossy surface it makes cleaning up any excess wash much easier.

I use to use varnish but I like the effect of the epoxy shine better. Thanks for subscribing.

Regular polish top coat works good too if you have it. For the eyes. I tried it

I have learnt so much from this video! People told me that if you paint 3d prints with a paint brush it will look bad but your groot looks awesome!

If you don't have epoxy, you can also get an enamal clear coat from a hobby store and it gives it a wet finish with zero air bubbles.

Sometimes the background music overtakes what you are saying when you lower your voice. I would lower it a bit.
    otherwise nice video!

Looks good but there is a much easier way to get that same effect for eyes. Use a paint on gloss varnish. Something like 'Ardcoat from Citadel works perfectly. Or you could spray gloss varnish on the whole figure, mask the eyes and spray on some matte varnish.

I've used varnish before, but it does not look as good as the 5 min epoxy trick. It gives a great wet eyes look that varnish does not!

Love the video, though I think you should finish with about 20-30 seconds of a good close-up of what a finished piece. Maybe pictures taken with a proper camera?

baby (and adult) groot's eyes aren't full black...he has brown irises. Couldn't tell in video if you did them or not but they looked full black.

He's so cute! The reasons for me getting a 3D printer are really mounting up...
Wouldn't a gloss varnish be easier for the eyes? Especially such a small amount

great vid, totally gonna try this on my groot. altho the music is a smidge too loud, drowns your voice out a bit.

Hi. Great result. I appreciate you sharing your impressive skills. What were you removing with the emery board at the very beginning? I have no experience with 3D printing - you said something about "high stuff" from the printing, I think?
Also, if you are right-handed, consider placing your camera on your left, or a higher angle, in front etc so your hand doesn't block vision of the work being done. Maybe edit some close-ups, where appropriate, into your video. Thanks!

Thank you for the great painting video! I've been following about 30 different channels and pulling info from everyone regarding painting my 3D printable miniatures! I'm trying to learn simple techniques to do the best I can (quickly!) while my Kickstarter is going on but I don't think anything I can do is quite good enough to show off...it's OK though! I'll be ready for the next one. I should have planned ahead and gathered some skills earlier. We just launched the first FULL LINE of 3D printable fantasy miniatures on Kickstarter. It's called "Stout Hearted Heroes DUNGEONEERS". Thank you for being one of the awesome painters on UA-cam that helps people like me...who are JUST learning!

It all depends on how big the patterns are. Even big costume pieces are smaller parts glued together.

Do you think shellac would work as well as the epoxy on the eyes?
I'm thinking about trying to print him with a wood filament, assuming my printer can handle it.

    • @EvilTedSmith
