    Hi Rob. I'm just getting back into modeling after a 30 year break for college, career, wife and kids. Modeling tech has definitely improved. I've invested in a lot of new tools I'm going to learn how to use. Airbrush, Photo-Etch, lighting options(not to mention some old-time methods I never tried before like putty fill and sanding seams). Video channels like yours are a great source of inspiration and information. Keep up the great work, my friend. Peace.

      Thanks so much for the comment. Good for you. That's exactly what I did. Was just looking for a new hobby and started back at it when I bought a 3d printer a few years ago. Here in 2021. Good job. I was into kit modeling around 40 years ago. I still have the Colonial Viper kit model that I put together around 1979. It's the Monogram version. There are 3 major design differences between the original/classic Viper & this MkII from the reimagined series. The first is that this one exposes more of the engines towards the exhausts while the original exposes more of the front part of the intakes as well as some service panels between. The other difference is that the front fuselage starts to taper off towards the nose & makes it smaller, while the original is straighter, thus the photo torpedo port is a wider hole. The Monogram version also does not have see-through plastic for the cockpit windows. The red line decals are nearly the same, which I suppose they kept that way as a homage & historical reference to the original. The red decals on mine had since fell off, even 40 years ago, so what I did as a kid was just cut some paper, painted red & glued them on. Looks good, although not really desirable today, but I couldn't think of anything else back then. :)

      Thanks so much for the comment. As a kid, I loved the show when it first aired and have a lot of great memories from it. I also started building models back then, but they were all terrible. There's a lot of great model building tools available now than there was back in those days. You should give it another go. Thanks again for the comment. Take care.

      @@RobPauza ... Well I did want the Cylon Raider badly, but even then the kits were expensive for a kid, so never really got one. I built several kits in those days, around 1980, they were mostly planes, fictional & non-fictional, including the Viper. Non-fictional includes an F-104 Starfighter, F-4 Phantom & a Russian MiG 25 Foxbat. Of course there was the ocassional car & some other stuff like a lighted Goodyear blimp, Nimitz aircraft carrier & a Star Wars AT-AT. Also have the Buck Rogers Thunderfighter to go with the sci-fi stuff. Some of these things have tiny pieces that had since broken off but I saved them to glue back again someday. By 1985, I pretty much lost my interest, although I still have the tools (brushes, glues, paints, etc). The reason for losing interest was my dive into computers, beginning with the Commodore 64 around 1983, then onto PC, though I still have my C-64's. Well actually it began in the late 1970's with gaming consoles (Coleco & Atari). I do have at least one more plastic kit I never put together, a Star Wars B-Wing bomber, bought back in the day, so maybe I may try my hand in it someday. I also have some sort of car kit that I never put together either, but with maybe around 300 pieces, it would be daunting especially when I have lost interest in the whole thing. I may sell it eventually. And I do recall the local Walmart having scale kits & tools in the toy section only a few years ago, but when I went there recently, maybe in the last couple years, it was all gone. Today, the models I make are in CAD, though it's mostly for floorplan stuff. Perhaps that was my path when it comes to modeling, i.e. from plastic to silicon, heh. So, we'll see. Take care too. :)

      @@robwebnoid5763 I think I'm a few years younger than you, but it seems like we had a similar childhood. The Vic20 was my first computer, followed by the 64, then my brother and I went full-throttle and got an Amiga 500 and added extra RAM to get a whopping 1 MB! We also had an Atari400 somewhere in the mix and started moving towards PCs after that. I've only built a couple plastic models in the last 30 years, but it's been fun to get back in it a bit. 3D printing kind of sparked it back for me. That's mainly what I do now... when I have time... which isn't very often these days.

      @@RobPauza ... That is cool to know you were also a Commodorian. Yes I'm probably a little bit older. I went for the C64 after a bit of research. In highschool, the main classroom PC's at the time were TRS-80's, mainly the Mk II & IV, networked to a harddrive (probably 1-2 MB disc space, who knows) using CP/M as the DOS. As a young teen then in the early 1980's, when the family went out to the malls, I would walk to any department store that had the microcomputer floor demo units & would play around with them. Atari, Commodore, RadioShack, Mattel, Apple & IBM(Intel), etc. I found a magazine article comparing the microcomputers at the time & eventually chose the C-64 because of the specs. By 1982-83, I felt the Vic-20 was on its way out as well as the Atari 400, which I had also both played around with at the stores prior. The Atari 800 was real nice too, built like a tank, but aging. Today, I still have three C-64's but only one is working, so I will have to debug the other units (one has a busted voltage regulator). I have at least 5 floppy drives for them, including three 1541's, a 1541-ii , a 1581, plus a couple 3rd party (Excelerator+). Still have many impact dotmatrix printers, not just for Commodore but also for the office I used to work at (I did simple network & database management & also custom programming). I also have a C64 CPU accelerator 4x faster than stock. Nearly 15 years ago, I was handed a C128 but I turned it down because I was thinking that if I take it, it would take my focus away from my C-64 & PC systems & I was already busy with my time. I half-regret it, but perhaps it was for the better. I did want an Amiga back then. In the early 1990's, a college classmate was selling his Amiga 600 system, but I also said no thanks. So basically I missed the Amiga bandwagon, which is ok now. By the mid 1980's, I was starting to get into PC's, beginning with a XT/8088-class system for work (but also for play). I have accumulated several PC's, not because I collect them but mainly because I've kept the ones we've bought over the years. Some of them I took apart & put the motherboards in ESD bags, which really helped compact the amount of machines I have. I understand the 1 MB thing, it's meager now but not back then. I actually still have an 80286 from the late 1980's that I still want to populate with 1 MB of DIP memory chips but havent yet, not a priority, it only has 640k. I don't really have any thing modern as far as desktops/towers go, so all I have are modern laptops (models within the past 10 years).
      That is really nice that you have a 3D printer. I was looking into those around 5 years ago & would see them at the local Frys Electronics (RIP). Isn't that funny, you go from plastic (scale models) to silicon (CAD) & back to plastic (3D printer). One thing I wish 3D printers could do now is make metal gear wheels. I fix machines & I have a couple paper shredders that need new gears, which these gears are hard to find. I don't have the knowhow but I've seen videos of some machinists making metal gears from scratch. The rest of the shredder works, but without that one gear, the shredder doesnt work. I suppose that would be the same as a person won't be alive without a heart or brain. It's just bad design, this specific gear wheel takes a lot of the brunt in the gear system of the shredder, especially when people put more than one sheet of paper stacked together to shred. Anyway, glad to see another C= fan around here. I used to go to the Lemon64 forum, but now just too busy. Instead my free time these days is watching UA-cam, lmao. :)

      @@robwebnoid5763 Ah.. I had almost forgotten about the TRS-80's.. We called them "Trash-80's". Yeah, we had those in school as well as Apple 2e's. I never got much into programming, but my brother did for sure. I can make lights blink on Arduino's, but not a whole lot more. I'm not sure what to tell you about the gear problem. That would be a tough 3D print to make. Otherwise, you could print, then mold/cast in metal. I guess the other option is to just machine one. I don't know much about that. I do enjoy watching Clickspring on UA-cam. He does some amazing machine work that involves custom gears. Good talking to you.

    I use Tamiya white and grey putty now. It's not to bad on shrinking.
    I remember as a kid in the early to mid eighties,Bondo body filler, for cars, they used to have a single part putty in a 6/8 inch tube,like for touch ups I guess. I used to get that stuff and used it all the time. Miss the good ol days when the really good stuff was dangerous,and would either blow up if you snuck a smoke or the fumes would try to kill you if you forgot to open your window!
    That frog tape does that with oil paints! I used a Q-tip wet with lighter fluid to dissolve it. Doesn't seem to mess with model plastic...

    I was in a squadron years ago and the pilots would use 1/72 scale models on a dowel road during their briefs. They didn't do any details, just glue it up, fill it up with body filler to give it some weight, paint it, stick a dowel rod up an exhaust. They didn't look pretty but for training purposes they were very practical especially when the insides were filled with body filler they were pretty durable also because they did get knocked around a bit and would break without the filler.
    I made a few models over 35 years ago and some were okay but not as pretty as yours but for a beginner I did most of your techniques with regular Testor's model paint and brushes. I still have them at my mom's house after all these years her grandkids never touched them.

    • @RobPauza
      @RobPauza  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the comment. I have actually wondered for a long time if those small models used in briefings are just regular plastic models. Thanks for letting me know. That's actually super interesting. I used to make models as a kid as well using the Testors enamels. Mine were pretty terrible to be honest. I just got back into this stuff a little bit since 3d printing became such a big thing. Glad your models have somehow gone undestroyed after all these years. :) Thanks again for the comment. -Rob

    • @RobPauza
      @RobPauza  4 роки тому

      Oh really? I have noticed certain colors clog a little easier, but overall have had good luck. I'm using the stock nozzle and about 25-30 psi. I usually do add a little flow improver to the mix since I use a little higher psi. Helps it not dry on needle or before it lands on the surface. Best wishes, and thanks btw. I appreciate the comment.
