You're right! As to defending against thugs wearing body armor, 5.56 M-193 when fired out of a 16" barrel will penetrate level 3 armor which is another reason to chose an AR-15 whereas a 9mm won't. If your home invaders are wearing body armor, a handgun most likely will be inadequate. Also worth noting is 7.62x39 won't penetrate level 3 armor either. Since you brought up the fact that many home invaders are now wearing body armor, that's another reason I prefer an AR-15 over a handgun or an AK for home defense. I'm also a firm believer in having a backup so having more than one is best if it's within your means.

Not only is the AR an outstanding home defense rife, but those anti-Gunters also don't understand that it's a sporting rife and it's fun to shoot as well. My ar is basically for shooting at the range for sport, but if some unlucky savage breaks in to cause me harm it will be used to defend myself .

Me personally I would rather call 911 before/as the intruder is trying to break into my home because you would have a less chance of saying something that can get you in trouble. Compared to the intruder already being inside your home and you having to end the threat. Now you have to call 911 and report the crime that can get you in trouble because you just had to defend your self, so your adrenaline is pumping, your scared, 100% chance you will end up saying something that can be used against you in court.
