Nice work here is some tips for, RWD driveway transmission tips; 1. Get the vehicle as high as possible, using ramps on the front and jackstands on the back. 2. Make sure you buy a pack of the longest 3/8 or 1/2 drive extensions you can to reach the bastard bolts on the top of the bell housing. 3. Look up your transmission to figure out the weight of it, then you'll know what you're dealing with. 4. If the transmission is not too heavy (I wouldn't risk over 70lbs) lay under the transmission with blankets on either side of you (in case you need to dump the transmission) and your legs under the bell housing and your hands on the tail shaft casing, use the sides of your legs and knees to slide the transmission out of the clutch/torque converter than roll out from under the vehicle. Some little tips to make the job easier.
That was the easy part. The fun is putting it back on, getting it on the jack while it is under the car, then balance and align it to mate with the engine. This is a manual. if it is a 6 speed auto, it will be even more fun. It does look like you have the muscle to do it thou. Thanks for the video.
The BMW engineers are probably shaking their heads in Germany. All that precision in making that transmission and to see it molested like it was. Haha 😂
very informative video, best one I've seen so far, will help me a lot! keep it up note that on some e36, I think 320i, the starter is held on by 2 additional nuts, that are very hard to reach without removing the manifold
HAHA @ 17:50 - I do the same stuff in my garage and react pretty much that same way - glad to know I'm not the only one that has those moments that aren't exactly "graceful"
Oh yeah we are anything but graceful 😂 I think it’s important to show some of the stuff that is a pain. When it comes to working on cars, a 5 min job always means more like 5 hours 😂
23:52 If you don’t got grease gun, you can also use wet newspaper or bread. I deadass used bread to get that pilot bearing out of my E36. I would use this method over the grease gun, as the grease can become a mess.
T.C. Worley thank you so much for this positive feedback, we are just happy to help. If you run into any issues or trouble spots just send us a message and we can try and help you through it.
dang that sucks, there are a few options to get it out depending on how bad it's stripped. Harbor freight and Sears sell bolt extractors that can help with stripped bolts. It just depends on how bad it is stripped. the other part that makes it difficult is the location. Is it one of the starter bolts or is it one of the top two bolts that are fat and short? Are y'all using an impact gun to break them loose?
It’s one of the top two. I think only the corners of the head are rounded but that bolt extractor may work. We just went and got a kit and will try it tomorrow maybe. We’ll let u know how it goes. It’s soaking in Aero Kroil in the meantime. And no, we are not using impact.
Hello, greetings from Chile and thanks for your video. I have a 1992 e36 325i AT and want to do a transmission manual swap. Years ago, someone sold me a getrag transmission supposedly extracted from e36 318i. When I tested the car, the gear ratio was a mess, so I installed a 3.15 m3 differential, but I never managed to get the car to be well connected to the gears. I have read in many forums that show that the getrag gearbox of the e36 1.8i is the same as the e36 325i, but I have doubts about what I mentioned before. When reviewing technical information I could see that e36 325i uses 3.12 differential and getrag 250 gearbox and that of 318i is getrag 225 if I remember correctly. I don't want to use my car to run or drift, I just want a nice car that at times can perhaps enjoy its power a bit. In Chile there are not many e36 325i MT, therefore, getting an original used transmission is impossible, I can only buy the e36 318i. Can you give me your opinion on exchanging getrag for e36 318i? I also wanted to ask if the weight of the 318i and 325i flywheel influences when trading. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us.
This Joaquin and Om using my girls phone .I wanted to comment in your video. Your down to earth and you remind me so much of me. Haha. Later . Joaquin Garcia
pbmig thanks, we used a big pry bar and stuck it in between the teeth of the flywheel and the floor to hold it in place. I think you can barely see me holding it (putting a camera under the car with two dudes was a challenge lol) but if that doesn’t work another trick is to use a bolt from the transmission and put it in the engine block where the bellhousing meets the block and use metal wire and tie it to the pressureplate. One of those should do the trick!
Great video, exceptionally thorough. You need to find some work clothes ..haha...shirt looks too good to work in...i plan to do similar and work from floor...loved how you took a lot of trouble with detail, like all tools required , what not to do , excellent....thanks again....i heard you can used bread if you don't have a grease gun....same idea...hydraulic pressure forces out bearing....thanks again...much appreciated
Thanks I really appreciate that. Yeah luckily with that brand they have a beer guarantee and if you ruin the shirt they will replace it free of charge, you just have to tell them what you were doing when you destroyed it 😅 The bread trick really does work, you just need about a half a loaf and a little luck. Good luck on your build!
I’m currently doing this and no, the shifter support is going to be in the way since its not attached to the transmission. So yeah you HAVE TO take the shifting rod out of the shifter
14:27 all people have cancer in their bodies. It's just not active. It's not "active" by default. It's just a matter of activating it with asbestos and other things like you said. Stay safe
Question. I replaced my engine wire harness but I have two plugs left. Because I only have a jack I’m unable to see it in it’s entirety but according to my friend the plugs from the engine wire harness that plugs into the trans ..the trans would have to be dropped a bit. Is this true? I thought I could just snap things in place
I would double check and make sure you got every bolt out and disconnected any connections that might get hung up. If everything is disconnected and it’s still getting hung up, sometimes the input shaft of the transmission gets hung up on the pilot bearing. Try to get the transmission as level as possible when you pull straight back. Sometimes if the transmission is angled to heavy one way or another it can get hung up. Another trick is to slightly jack up the front of the engine to tilt the transmission back (be careful not to crack the oil pan, use wood blocks and very little pressure) hopefully one of these tricks should help you out.
Mack Katzel no, I just removed all the bell housing bolts and carefully pulled the transmission from the engine. The starter just rests on top of the block. Hope this helps.

the video works just as well with taking the 5 speed getrag transmission out of e36 with the m43 engine thank you for the awesome video and tips 🙏🏽
You're brave, bringing the transmission down by yourself in such a tight place.
Some say brave, some say stupid. I say potatoe potato 😂

🤣 yeah they would not be happy with our “technique” 😂
Thanks for making this video. I had an idea of how to pull my transmission but I just wanted to make sure. Knowing all the tools I need helps too.
Mack Katzel anytime we are just glad to help! Good luck with your install!
this video deserve more credit. Gonna be attempting this soon. Great job man. will leave a comment if I have any questions

Thank you for this, I appreciate it. Definitely not doing this without a trans jack 😂
Anytime, glad we could help out!

Dude you just took a transmission out by hand while laying under it. ur a beast haha
Haha I guess I never really thought about that 😅

Thank you for the video. I would have never figured out how to get the top shift rod off of the top of the transmission. 👌
Glad to help!
Very helpful. We begin this tomorrow on my sons car - appreciate you making this!

You got it! -- thanks again :)
Well, we got all the bolts out except the drivers-side top and we stripped the head on it :/ Any advice?

Very informative video..Well done.
I stripped one of my clutch cover bolts too and I'm having a hell of a time getting it off lol
Beautiful explanation! Thanks!
Jesus, you turned hella red at 17:24 lol. That's why I brought a transmission jack 🤣
sweet video. How did you lock the fly wheel in place?
pbmig thanks, we used a big pry bar and stuck it in between the teeth of the flywheel and the floor to hold it in place. Man after grenading my gertrag this weekend while doing a couple shakedown test and now i get to put my spare trans in and rebuild my old trans lmao
Damn that sounds like a rough weekend. Hopefully your install went well. Best of luck 🙂
Im dreading this, thanks bro ! BOOGZ

Really useful video. Thank you
No problem, just glad to help!
Did your trans say atf or mtf?
well done & thx for the tips, ill be pulling out mine too in a couple of weeks x"DD
No problem, good luck! Hopefully yours goes smooth! 👍🏻
great video man!
Is this a getrag or zf transmission?
There’s a bolt at the very top under the big one that seems like it has a nut on the other side it’s my last bolt how did you get it off
Good job brow...like it
Swapping my trans tomorrow, can I pull the trans with the shifter still attached? Would this be easier?
I’m currently doing this and no, the shifter support is going to be in the way since its not attached to the transmission. So yeah you HAVE TO take the shifting rod out of the shifter

Great video. Very usefull thx
I guess from your video it’s the starter bolt on the passenger side
what kind of grease?
Question. I replaced my engine wire harness but I have two plugs left. Reverse switch
Hey mines stuck on something, trans only goes a inch from the engine, any ideas what it is? Ive been prying on it like crazy and jothing

good..
😂😂 he said clutch material on the drain but it’s manual
