I've managed to go my entire 40 years without hearing a single Kiss song to completion. Usually just enough passing thru on a radio scan to know it wasn't for me. I was never a fan of the Nugent/Kiss/Motley Crue style of rock. Alice Cooper wasn't completely horrible, but I really only liked one of his.
I look at that stage of metal as an unfortunately necessary stepping stone to much, much, much better things...

To see Paul Stanley at the height of his vocal abilities, check out I STILL LOVE YOU, from the MTV KISS UNPLUGGED show. I have endless respect for Paul Stanley. While most rock musicians start out strong when they are young, but then go downhill, Paul continued to improve both his vocal and guitar skills over the course of his career. His vocal cords were clearly starting to wear out by 2005, but he kept going until the band finally retired this year.

Saw an interview with Paul Stanley where he said that when he went to concerts, he was tired of hearing bands that didn’t give the audience their money’s worth - even though they paid for a ticket. He wanted to be the band that always give the audience their money’s worth. Musically I am not a fan of KISS, but I can say that as a show band every single time I saw them in concert, they gave 100% and the audience got their money’s worth. They never “mailed it in” or gave the audience anything less than they paid for.

We stayed for Kiss for the fire show, etc.
The reason I checked out Elizabeth's take on this song. Is because 'Detroit Rock City' is probably my favorite song of theirs. It was their opening song when I saw them. But the sound was screwed up until the song was almost over. Only then did we know what it was. It was kind of a hoot after that. We did leave before they finished to beat the traffic.

    • @scottodell4371
      @scottodell4371 16 днів тому

@@JR-vc3lq Well, about that. I heard it too - but then I started wondering - because this was, for 1980, considered to be a "professional" video-taping of the concert - could they have double tracked the vocals in post-production to make his voice sound more "full"? I know that audio engineers do all kinds of things with sound in post, because generally bands do not like the way they sound in concert, and to make their egos better the audio engineer will effect all kinds of sounds for them. That would also explain why it looks like Paul is lip-syncing. I honestly don't know about Kiss using backing tracks in the last 6 years, but a post-production "enhancement" would make sense.

Paul Stanley said that "Detroit Rock City" was one the best songs he had ever written, released in 1976, it was overshadowed by the ballad "Beth" that became a huge single that year. Paul Stanley said the lyrics were a tribute to a Kiss fan in North Carolina, who was killed in a car accident on the way to a Kiss concert. Kiss wanted to immortalize Detroit in gratitude for embracing this band from New York City with 4 guys in makeup and costumes. Everybody thought Kiss were clowns, but they blew away audiences on tour and they were playing arenas in Detroit around 1975 and the Midwest, before they even had a hit record.
Also, their big double-live album "Alive!" was recorded in Detroit's Cobo Hall in '75 and that became their first major album. By 1977, the original Kiss was a global success and had become a pop culture phenomenon.

It was a big cultural phenomenon. In the 80's when they actually unmasked, they did prove that it wasn't just the makeup. They leaned into the whole hair metal genre and those albums also sold well.

So, I'm just gonna say this: I'm a huge metalhead, I love so many different subgenres of metal, and all of that started the first time I listened to God of Thunder on Tony Hawk's Underground. Instantly fell in love with these guys and the sounds they could make. I'm by no means a giant KISS-head, I've not listened to their entire discography, I only know a handful of their songs.. but I respect the absolute hell out of these guys.
Yes, I know, KISS isn't a metal band, but she's absolutely right--they're a bridge or gateway band. Anyway, that's all, just wanted to say that regardless of your opinion of KISS's music, they're worthy of respect. Hell, despite not being a huge KISS fan, family keep buying me their shirts (which I don't mind, the KISS logo is freaking RAD! Not only that, I'm proud to wear their stuff.)

The thing about Kiss that always got me was, the music sounds like fun. As I got realized, one of the things I loved about rock music is when you listen to it, it's like electricity flying through your body. That's what I've always felt. Kiss also has a lot of good melodic songs, with great sing along choruses. Also, if you analyze the guitar parts, there's lots of interesting things going on in a lot of the songs. The two guitars aren't playing the same parts, a lot of times, they're playing different inversions. They might be both be playing an E chord, but Paul might be playing it as an open positioned chord, while Ace might be playign further up the fingerboard, on the upper strings. So there's a lot more sophistication to the music than I think most people realize.

I’ve seen them 4 times in my life, once in each of the past 4 decades, and they always put on a great show. Despite the comments about not being great musicians but entertainers, I think they were both. Paul Stanley was a great vocalist and guitarist. Gene Simmons was good singer and great bassist. Ace Frehley was not a good singer but was a great guitarist. And Peter Criss was an awesome drummer that sang well when given the chance. I think for their performance, it was mostly about giving their audience a wonderful experience and memory.

In the mid 70’s there was nothing like Kiss, no stages that size, no light or smoke machines like they had, the were no AC/DC, no Judas Priest, no Van Halen, nor Iron Maiden, that’s what made them great, even these groups were their opening act in different tours.
The music was not complicated, songs about simple things that made life good in those years. Their stage presence was great, they are more than 6 foot tall guys in high heels, cool costumes, they were the super heroes that played hard rock. And they had a huge merchandising, you could not get another band lunch box or an action figure or anything you can imagine. I think all that is what made them stand out in many things that didn’t exist back then.

Also, weird seeing them take a lot of flack on here. No, they weren’t elite musicians, that’s obvious.
They wrote 2-3 absolute iconic songs, they were super solid live (before Paul’s voice left him) and they always delivered a spectacular show. Oh yeah, they’ve sold over 100 million albums. That puts them in very rarified air.
So, if you’re looking for absolute vocal/musical brilliance, no. If you’re looking for solid musicianship, consistency, and absolute stellar showmanship that is probably responsible for most of the stage shows you see today, these are the guys.

My favorite one is when Paul Stanley met Guns n Roses for the first time. Paul said, they played some recordings for him and he was really impressed. Paul then said he made a couple of suggestions on a couple of songs, and that he was blown away by their live show. Paul also said Slash kept asking him how to get endorsement deals for free equipment. In a later interview (after GnR made it big) Slash said Paul had a diva attitude, tried to tell them what to do and how to do it, nobody in GnR even liked KISS. Really ran Paul over the coals. Paul then said, a few months later, Slash called him wanting more advice on getting endorsement deals. Paul asked him about the interview and Slash admitted to saying those things. Paul said, "piece of advice kid, don't s*** where you eat." and hung up. In later interviews, Slash kind of admitted, he knew he had screwed that one up.

I never understood the questioning of their musicianship. All the iconic riffs and melodies. Gene's bass lines. Paul's solid rhythm work. Ace and Peter never over playing, only what the song required. (When able due to substance abuse). I do agree their lyrics were throw away, for the most part.

Four months later I was gifted the Album for Christmas. That's when I first saw what they looked like. I like them as much as Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Aerosmith, any hard rock band. My ears liked what they heard.
By "required" I too am referring to today's standards where there often is too much playing. I don't need to hear an Eruption caliber solo in every song, nor do I need to hear a drummer nearly the entire length of the composition with feet as fast as Fred Flintstone's while trying to get his car going.

Regarding the sustained singing by Paul, consider some of these things:
    1. Gene, and occasionally Ace and Peter, took over lead vocals on different set list songs. So, Paul wasn't singing lead from beginning to end of show.
    2. Their show was all about theatrics. Prolonged drum and guitar solos along with other theatrics gave time for vocal breaks.
    3. I don't know why fans chose this song to showcase the best of what KISS had to offer musically, but it was certainly a fan favorite as it opened a show with a theatrical punch to the face. But there are other songs done by Paul which would have better showcased his range.
With all that said, KISS set the bar very high for other bands and artists to up their stage game, which, for their time was not done to that level. KISS wasn't known for their musical prowess (it wasn't bad. In fact it was good. But rarely was it stellar), but when you listened to their songs you imagined their shows. Very powerful. They were a childhood favorite of mine.

Mike You have been a KISS fan for only forty years ??!! clearly either a "late comer", too young or in some limited location, residence, country 😙
KISS became a sensation as they were introduced to the public fifty years ago; more so as they were introduced within the 'commercial' RockNRoll scene.
Then introduced to the public more via public, live, tour shows, as they became available, popular with their "theatrics" including costumes, costume changers, pyrotechnics, while remaining with their "unknown" actual appearance mystique.
Apparently they were originally a "Studio Band" which became commercial success, then live performance, show, presentation, theatrical success too.
Always, still remember, recall the first time, instance, one of my close buddies played their first released album with the cover photo, along with others within that same time period.
It was a revival period which clearly opposed the poor "Disco" era, though it had some good melodic aspects and close dancing; but Booooring, repetitive, lacking creativity - current "Pop" is quite similar though better than the horrible, meaningless, mostly disgusting "Rap" [heard the earl versions first in 1980 - Yuuuck, horrible disgusting, etc.]

The ABSOLUTE **MUST** for Kiss vocals... you gotta do "I Still Love You" from MTV Unplugged. Paul Stanley was unparalleled vocal greatness. Unfortunately all of this "power" caught up with him about 15 years ago, and he has since truly struggled vocally. He had to have throat surgery at one point even, but continued to struggle. But for the first 35 years in the spot light, no one could touch what he was particularly doing, with vocal range, power, showmanship, and style.
You should also totally check out his performance as the Phantom, "Music of the Night" for sure. He got RAVE reviews for that performance, with one music teacher saying she'd never seen a performance so perfect and sincere. it was very personal for Paul, as he was born with a facial deformity and consequently is deaf in one ear.
On a final note, every one in Kiss sings, including replacement members. So you've got nine total vocalists for this band. All of them unique, and some quite great.

Re: The guitar solo "It'd be really easy to play along with or sing along with."
That's the answer right there why KISS was so popular. It was rock music that was easily consumable by masses of people in terms of lyrics, melody, and rhythm. Whether you were a player of music or just a listener of it.
I think any of us here on your channel who play guitar, bass, or drums and have grew up on pop and rock music have gone through a KISS phase. We all learned songs like "Detroit Rock City", and "Rock And Roll All Night" starting out, because it was simple enough for us then-novices to play, and popular enough that the other kids would go "Hey man, that's awesome!"
A good confidence builder when we were young and learning our instruments, and then we eventually decided to spread our wings and find our own directions in music, and raise the complexity level a bit.
