This was a song made about his mother who fought her battle with cancer and eventually lost it. I weep everytime I hear it. I dare you to read about it then go back and watch this again with that in mind; tears may flow.
I caught him doing an acoustic set at a music fest in Burlington, Ontario around 2009. A tent on the main street and maybe 150 people in attendance. Fantastic.
@jenniferallred9367 Knowing that story since I as a kid whenever that song play it hit me hard. I joined the Air Force in 1991 and six months later I buried my very close grandmother and my aunt. I had to ask the red cross to get me tickets and my seargent went against rules and let me go to both funerals; the military usually only allows a troop to go to only immediate family's funerals. Take that video away and put headphones on and listen eyes closed and it is very sad but gives you hope still.
@@jimmybuttons7125 I've been a Triumph fan since the early '80s and never knew that, either. However, I still had to wipe a few tears away while listening (before I saw your comment), because this song evokes so much emotion and special memories of better times when it was released. Triumph was on constant repeat in my car during high school! 💜🎵
Rik wrote the song about his aunt who was battling cancer. This song has actually been an inspirations to millions of Triumph fans over the years. In my opinion, the most underrated rock band of all time.
Thank you so much for this! His vocal performance at the US festival is some of the most impressive vocals I’ve ever heard. He’s really channeling his Rush inspiration here
Triumph and Rush had debut albums in 75 and 74 respectively...pretty close to the same time period. Rush was definitely not one of Rik's influences. He had stated many times that Clapton, and Page were amongst his major influences. Triumph was a Zeppelin cover band in their early days.
@@bobbrown6603 Glad to see you address this, since I keep seeing it on reaction videos. Bands from this time period especially did have some similar elements in their music, but it wasn't because they influenced each other. It was because they grew up in the same era, listened to the same music and were inspired by a lot of the same bands that existed in the generation before them. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc always figured prominently in the sound of the 1970s bands. What they were able to add or take away from that was what made them unique. But there was always a common thread.
Geddy can't touch Rik's vocals with a ten foot pole, especially LIVE. Neither can Lifeson on Guitar. Rik was not influenced by Rush, as they formed at basically the same time, and he NEVER mentions them as an influence (although he was friends with Lifeson, but not the other Rush members). He was influenced heavily by Zepplin, Beatles, and especially Yes, Steve Howe in particular.
I have been waiting for this one for a long while. Rik Emmett a great vocalist. Great band, great song and you picked the best performance for this one Elizabeth. This one to go on your uplifting song playlist. I know it's on mine.
Gil Moore ( the drummer) is also a fantastic singer. This performance set them up for massive U S. Airplay. They were popular, but the set from this concert launched them internationally
Finally, Triumph is getting recognition that they deserve! So underrated and should not be overlooked. Rik Emmett’s voice is amazing. “Lay it On the Line”, is your next voyage of Triumph. CDN Rock, Rocks!! Thank You for covering Triumph!!
I can't believe you did TRIUMPH. An all time favorite of mine in high school. Rik Emmet is amazing - such vocals and such guitar playing (the first guy I heard in rock bringing flamenco elements into some of his solos). Seeing you experience his skills makes me so happy. 🔥
Rick is an accomplished classical guitar player . He would sit on a stool and play his 12 string at full concert level sound. It was spectacular! You should contact him for an interview …. He’s a really nice grounded guy.
First Kansas and now Triumph! I've been waiting a long time for this one. Best thing is that you picked a live performance from one of the greatest live recordings of a band. Triumph has so many good songs, but this one tops the list for me.
@@FrozenRose816I just saw an interview with Rik (it is on the Tube), where Rik said that Magic Power was about himself and his mother. He said first off it is about himself, when he was young, listening to music and baseball under his covers in bed with a little transistor radio, but changed the lyrics to a girl based on his mother. She was always listening to music on the radio, and singing around the house, and was a huge influence on him becoming interested in music. In the same interview he discussed Steve Perry asking/complementing him on hitting such high notes effortlessly when they opened for Journey at a stadium show. He also talked about his vocal approach, guitar stuff...playing right, even though he is left-handed. He frankly discussed getting older, and how you have to approach songs differently, as he had turned 70 at that time. Very, very humble and honest guy...great listen...about 18 to 20 minutes long.
When I was a "paper boy" my bundle was dropped in front of a former bowling alley where Triumph rehearsed. Mike, the bass player, came out one day and I asked him what the band was called - he said "Triumph" and I said "never heard of them" 😁He replied "you will!" 😎
A friend of mine was the stage manager for a band and they were playing in San Francisco. They had a young band open for them, and he told the lads that opened that he thought they had a future but he said they needed to think about a different name. He didn't think the name Metallica would ever catch on.
Rik is a once in a generation talent, vocally and as a guitar player. He is literally a guitar prodigy of the highest caliber, putting out all the amazing Triumph records, then moving to instrumental fusion and jazz, and also an accomplished classical player. Gil Moore also has an amazing voice, more a straight ahead rock singer, but still great. Triumph were some of the best shows I've ever seen.
I never understood how Triumph didn't get wider radio play nationally, just a brilliant band and I'm always amazed how even many rock fans aren't all that aware of them. Great songs and musicians! This whole US Festival show is fantastic. Allied Forces is my favorite Triumph album, but so many great songs across the catalog and Rik is still putting out wonderful music and sounding amazing. Gil also sings lead on a number of Triumph songs and sounds great on this live show as well.
In my opinion, it's because their studio albums were shockingly sterile sounding, when compared to their concert presence. I think if they had paid for a big name producer then they would have been among the top five sales in the early 80's. (Like what Martin Birch did for Maiden). But absolutely the best live band I have ever seen (1985). The only album I ever recommend is 'Stages', because it's a live recording of course!
@@christophercook1631 Yeah I would love to hear what could be done with the original masters by someone like Terry Brown or Giles Martin. I think Allied Forces is probably the best sounding album of the era, but having gone back and listened to the early studio stuff a lot, I'm with you when you compare it to other 80s rock it just doesn't jump off the record like it should/could. Most of those 80s albums were recorded in Gils own studio, Metalworks, so i think maybe they thought they knew better at the time, though the studio has won a ton of "Recording Studio of the Year" awards over the decades, not sure of the criteria, heh. I'm glad we have the amazing live recordings that we do though! The US Festival DVD is just amazing.
@@danjmcs you had to see them live. I did twice and they were really that much better on stage. Well you can see it and hear it here at the US Fest. Also many of their deeper album cuts are harder and didn't get the airplay.
@@MrAitraining Yeah, I have the whole catalogue and been a fan since the early 80s. I grew up in the OR/WA State area and they always got airplay there, but when i moved to AZ they seemed to get less air play. Not unusual back then though for radio to be a little more regional. Glad to see them getting so much love still 40+ years later!
If she'd review the studio version, personally I'd go deep cut and say Suitcase Blues or Blinding Light Show. Or she could review Gil Moore's singing while drumming in When the Lights Go Down from the same live concert this review was from.
Rik was my guitar hero when I started playing and in 9h grade. The guy could play anything and with unreal precision and clarity. I saw Triumph for the first time a couple of years after this show and was totally blown away by the band's energy and incredible sound/stage show.
So much to comment on...1st- As a young boy of 10-12 yrs of age, I couldn't tell Triumph and Rush apart listening to them on the radio. 2nd- I haven't ever heard anyone say they didn't like Triumph. Just speaks to the quality of the music at the time. I love to see your reactions to the music I grew up on. And finally- Those look like some amazing onionrings! #thegreatgerkin
I'm sooo glad you finally found Rik Emmett!!!!!!!! This song, in particular, has helped me through an awful divorce, and reclaiming myself and my life...Fight the Good Fight Elizabeth! I love your channel!
I met Triumph w/ Bad Company back in 1986 at a show in Indianapolis. We had backstage passes and got to meet the band and get autographs. Their guitar tech had us sit on the stage with him. It was crazy loud by the amps with zero ear protection back then. Great show, great night, great guys! Magic Power was my anthem in my early teens. I suggest giving it your reaction Elizabeth. Thanks for all that you do. ❤
This entire performance was epic. A band in their prime, without a doubt. Saw them many times. They were always on and they never disappointed. Rik Emmett is a legend.
I’m always Amazed to see the reaction of millennials when they see actual talent, this was a time when you really did play live, and sing at the same time! No auto tune or pitch correction.. authentic talent on display your generation will never achieve sadly..
I like that Rik isn't afraid to wear his guitar up higher which is much easier on the wrists and hands, rather than trying to look cool with it slung down by his hips.
Thank you Elizabeth!!! Finally one of Canada’s greatest power trios!! Lay it on the line, Magic Power…. Any video that you want to see from Triumph, watch from the US concert. OMG, OMG, OMG...I've been hoping for you to do Triumph for some time. I'm in my happy place now. Thank you Elizabeth. If you enjoyed that, consider that it was the last song of their set, so Rik had been singing like that for over an hour in brutal heat. Yeah, he's amazing. I really hope you check out Lay it On the Line from the same show.

I'm just glad you finally got here. You will spend much time here, especially when you discover just how talented of writers, musicians, & vocalists they truly are. Rick's voice is incredible, but Gil, the drummer is no slouch either.
Very excited to hear your reaction to this one. My understanding is this song was written as a gift by Rik & the band to Rik’s aunt who was fighting and ultimately succumbed to cancer. Very inspirational song and Rik’s voice is amazing!
This is one of my top ten favorite songs of life. The contrast of light to heavy is perfect, and Rik's voice was on point..the choruses were so "epic"...it makes me weep tears of joy whenever I listen to it...
Elizabeth, This was the biggest day of US Festival ( Day 2 ) with 375,000 in attendance, Triumph was one of Steve W's favorites, and this song was inspired by Rik's Aunt fighting Cancer, giving greater meaning to these lyrics when you pay attention to them... Watch the other songs from this performance too, it's ALL Amazing. This was an all time great performance for these guys !
I am so happy you are doing this song and liking it. One thing I never thought about, but we almost miss all the great lyrics of this song. They are super inspiring. I am someone who grew up with this band, they are awesome. I think it is a testament to this band to give such a wonderful performance, that is very difficult.
COMPLETELY blew EVERY band off the stage. Rik Emmett is a rock & roll god. This performance IMO is one of the GREATEST live performances EVER. The entire 3 man band Triumph is ELITE. Thank you so much for playing and adding your amazing insight.
Sooooo glad you finally got to Triumph! It's another rabbit hole, and this whole set was great. Along with Judas Priest, they stole the show at this festival. Hope to see more of both Triumph and Rush soon!
I graduated from High School in 1983. While in HS, SO many of my classmates were hardcore into Triumph. I just didn't get it... until 20 years later. WOW. These guys were/are SO great. It's a shame I missed out on loving them for so long. Oddly enough, my older brother was hardcore into Rush and I fell in love with them about 20 years later. Go Canada!
Triumph was my first concert event. Day on the Green, 1983 with Journey, Brian Adams, Eddie Money and Night Ranger. I was 14. Just an amazing day with my dad and sisters.
I took my oldest son to his first show as an early 14th birthday present. We saw Three Days Grace with Adam, Breaking Ben and Seether. It was a great show and years later we're still seeing live shows together 😁
Spellbound, Lay it on the line, Magic power, Allied forces, When the lights go down, Never surrender, Killing time... So many great songs to choose from.
Triumph was my favourite band growing up, and Fight the Good Fight is my all-time favourite song. Whenever I get a new speaker, phone, headphones etc. I still christen them with this song. Man the memories. I can remember just cranking Allied Forces, Thunder Seven etc. on my JVC RC-880 boombox when my parents were out and playing air guitar to Fight the Good Fight and Time Goes By. Love Triumph.
Triumph always had positive messages in their music. Please listen to more! Very underrated band... very good band. I am Canadian... one of our best.🇨🇦
I was there that day, just a few days before I turned 17. My parents were there that day as well and when I asked them what they thought of all the great bands that played that day, my dad told me that he was surprised at how good the singer for The Scorpions was. My mom, who wasn't much of a rock fan (although she liked the Grateful Dead) but had some musical background (unlike my father who only played drums on the steering wheel while driving) said that she was very impress with Rik's guitar solo. It made perfect sense, the guy is freaky good at both singing and playing guitar. The only thing we had like him in the US at the time was Dave Meniketti from Y&T. But yeah, I was there in the crowd... absolutely losing my mind because I love this song so much and the positive energy that they convey though their music. Plus, when you're in a crowd of roughly a HALF A MILLION PEOPLE it's easy to get swept up in the moment. I was very fortunate to attend both US Festivals, they were amazing experience punctuated by incredible live music performances. Triumph was the only band to had the foresight to negotiate the rights to the video of their set in their contract. They were the only act to release a DVD of their set officially. Much of the footage is being made available on YT through historic film preservation folks and some of it has decent sound. Unfortunately for most of the bands, it just shows how much more professional Triumph was. Van Halen made over $4 million that day and their set is unsellable. Hell, it's unwatchable. Even if (like me) you enjoy watching clowns like Diamond Dave (LMFAO) embarrass humanity. Rik is a force of nature. 🤘🧙♂🤘
Thank you Elizabeth it’s been a long wait but well worth it. Triumph 🇨🇦 has finally arrived on the CV channel yay!
Fantastic.
Oh wow. I didn't know that. Tears just sprang to my eyes.
@jenniferallred9367
Knowing that story since I as a kid whenever that song play it hit me hard.
Oh man I didn’t know that. Thanks.
Sincere, uplifting, honest. Traits that make TRIUMPH music GREAT music!
So happy you have flipped into their catalog.
The fact that he can sing while playing the drums just blew me away. 🤯
there problem is that they both song in the same range (sometimes sounding very much alike)
He's also a very good golfer.
Gil is good, but he does not have Rik's vocal ability. Rik is on a whole other level.
@@jeffwarren4938 very few are on rik's level.
Finally, Triumph is getting recognition that they deserve! So underrated and should not be overlooked. Rik Emmett’s voice is amazing. “Lay it On the Line”,
is your next voyage of Triumph. CDN Rock, Rocks!! Thank You for covering Triumph!!
I wholeheartedly agree.
Your my favorite vocal analysis channel. You do bring the joy of music to us all. Thank you.
The "good guys" of 80's hard rock! Triumph always had such positive uplifting lyrics, and Rik Emmet is a BOSS on vocals & guitar. Just amazing talent!
I concur
First Kansas and now Triumph! I've been waiting a long time for this one. Best thing is that you picked a live performance from one of the greatest live recordings of a band. Triumph has so many good songs, but this one tops the list for me.
God Bless you Elizabeth for highlighting one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures. Saw them in 1979 as a very young teenager. Blew my mind. 🤯
Thank you for looking at one of Canada's many talented acts. Triumph had alot of positive and uplifting songs. Glad to see this.
Triumph is incredible. Magic Power, World of Fantasy, Hold on, Never Surrender.. so many to choose from.
Magic Power is an amazing piece that Triumph did! The singing guitar will always be one of my favorite moments!
And I think Elizabeth will relate very strongly to the lyrics, it's basically her whole credo regarding music!
I concur
When I was a "paper boy" my bundle was dropped in front of a former bowling alley where Triumph rehearsed. Mike, the bass player, came out one day and I asked him what the band was called - he said "Triumph" and I said "never heard of them" 😁He replied "you will!" 😎
I got a chill by proxy on that. That would be a great line for a song.
A friend of mine was the stage manager for a band and they were playing in San Francisco. They had a young band open for them, and he told the lads that opened that he thought they had a future but he said they needed to think about a different name. He didn't think the name Metallica would ever catch on.
Triumph! YEAH!
Rik Emmett's voice and guitar skills are just from another world.
Welcome to Triumph.
If I could give a thousand up votes on this I would. Golden level classic rock.
Because their songs are encouraging and he calls out the elites and corporations.
One of the best vocalist/guitarist in the 70's 80's. They had so many hits through the years
"Magic Power" or "Lay it on the Line" next please.
Hallelujah! My prayers have been answered. I am so looking forward to this first.
Finally! Been waiting for you to review this song. Exceptional live performance here.
Rik is a hell of a guitar player as well. Her excitement and her facial expressions are the best. It’s like a kid on Christmas Day.
So excited to see you learning about Triumph; one of my top 3 bands ever. Thank you!!
I was talking about this concert a few months ago and how perfect it was. Absolutely one of the best live performances I've ever seen.
I’m always Amazed to see the reaction of millennials when they see actual talent, this was a time when you really did play live, and sing at the same time! No auto tune or pitch correction.. authentic talent on display your generation will never achieve sadly..
Great choice Elizabeth. Another amazing Canadian Rock Band
I like that Rik isn't afraid to wear his guitar up higher which is much easier on the wrists and hands, rather than trying to look cool with it slung down by his hips.
Yep...wears it in the classical style. A lefty playing right as well.
Teaches music business at Humber in Toronto now. I know some people who took his class. Super awesome guy apparently.
@@cameronswan8646He retired from Humber in 2018.
Here we go, All aboard the Triumph train, We are about to indulge in the excellence of Rock and roll at its best.
Perfect musical development. No one part is over another, but all create a whole.
Absolutely love Triumph! Rik has amazing vocals, a genuine virtuoso on the guitar!
Their drummer has a set of pipes as well as seen on "When The Lights Go Down" from the same show. Great band!
Yep!
Definitely, A drummer that can play at his level and sing at the same time is to be respected.
Yes! I think she'll love Gil's voice too!
Love "when the lights go down" esp from this show. "I got itchy fingers for the... trigger TO-night!"
You are gonna love this band live! No voice auto-tune..Rik is an amazing singer and guitarist they absolutely stole the show at the US festival ❤
Thank you Elizabeth!!! Finally one of Canada’s greatest power trios!! Lay it on the line, Magic Power…. Any video that you want to see from Triumph, watch from the US concert. Was one incredible song after another. I was fortunate to see them in their early days. Lights pyrotechnics and power voices. Canada has the best bands ever!!!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🤟🤟🤟🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Just last week I searched for your reaction to Triumph and couldn't believe it didn't exist. I'm glad you've found them - you're in for such a treat!
So happy you decided to do a video on Triumph. They have always been one of my favorite bands ever. So great! 😀
You should watch their documentary! They were such a hard working band. One of my favs ❤
This whole set is amazing. Rik and the band really showed out. I saw them live twice and they are absolutely a better live band than studio. "lay it on the line" from this show and the drummer gil moore slays voclas himself at this show "when the lights go down"
One of the best LIVE singers ever!!
Absolutely and Live Triumph is where it's at! I always found their studio versions mostly subdued compared to Live. Esp at this show. Apex moment
thanks
Triumph is one of my all time favorite bands and I've been following them since the mid seventies. Elizabeth nailed this analysis. More please!
Massive talent, great songs, and a humble demeaner. Their energy was driven by conquest and encouragement. Powerful stuff!
Probably one of the most underrated rock bands of all time. They're excellent musicians and song writers and Rik Emmett is a genius! Nice reaction!
Rick is an extremely humble man , also the Drummer they give so much back to the community
I'm one of the people that said you'd love Ghetty Lee and I've been waiting almost a year for you to finally listen to triumph!!! A good few amazing songs, but "Magic Power" is their true artistic masterpiece.. You HAVE to listen to it!!!
I'm just glad you finally got here. You will spend much time here, especially when you discover just how talented of writers, musicians, & vocalists they truly are. Rick's voice is incredible, but Gil, the drummer is no slouch either.
So excited to hear your reaction from rik and the boys.. prepare to be blown away!!
Thank you for analyzing this song. Such a phenomenal voice and backed with a great band. Truly under-appreciated for sure.
I love the fact that you came to metal later. So much more music to experience, fresh and new!
Go Canada!
I’m soooooo looking forward to this! I have been a Triumph fan since 1980 or 81 and thry were part of my first concert in 1983.
🤘🧙♂🤘
Great choice! Perfect combination of a legendary performance and remarkable venue. A massive crowd that definitely got their money's worth.
Thank you Elizabeth it’s been a long wait but well worth it. Triumph 🇨🇦 has finally arrived on the CV channel yay! When comparing Geddy’s vocals and Rics’ I always think Ric is slightly higher in pitch! Also what a great husband you have serving you lunch! Now I got to get some lunch too! Great analysis also! More Triumph please!
Cheers,
Mike L 😎🇨🇦🎸👍🏻✌🏻
Triumph was one of the bands I grew up with, and I'm so glad you finally got to hear them! Rik Emmett is one of my favorite vocalists! I agree with Lay It On The Line, but also check out Somebody's Out There, Never Surrender and Follow Your Heart with Gil on main vocals, great songs and anthems of my youth!
I saw them when I was 14 at autzen stadium . The year was 1983 what a time to be young , wild and free . I miss that era of music
I saw Sammy Hagar and the Greatful Dead on the same day
I think have all been waiting for this reaction!!
I saw these guys several times and they were a fantastic live band, not to mention that Rik Emmitt is absolutely incredible!!!
Triumph and April wine were my first concert when I was 13 lol
I saw this show, and Triumph at the Rose Bowl the year before, but sadly, I never got a chance to see April Wine.
Omg I love April Wine. Takes me right back to those days.
Very Nice. I was going to recommend some April Wine as well, :)

80's music is the best. I feel privilegiad to have been able to go to several Triumph concerts. Always an awesome performance. They are my all time favorite band. I have all their original vinyl albums and still listen to them. Of course, I introduced this band to my 20 year-old son and we listen to CD in my car. Glad you appreciate this talent.
Finally .Love it!!!! Thank you Elizabeth!!! I would wish you to listen to "Ordinary man" ,even if you don't do a vocal analysis of it!
Ive been commenting on this channel, for this band, for a long time. Thanks! " "Magic Power", their swan song, is a song about the love of music, written about Rick Emmitt as a kid listening to music as s kid on this little transistor radio!
We all are wating for Magic Power. I am 57 years old vocalist. I grew up with Gillan, Dio, Mercury, Coverdale, Meine, Glenn Hughes AND the two Triumph-Singers. Another Style recommend: Nicole Scherzinger. She is from another planet.
