  • I review the M46 Patton, a tier 9 American medium tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of tier 10 Sand River and Mannerheim Line battles.
    The M46 Patton combines superb DPM/alpha with very strong hull-down capabilities. Look no further for the quintessential "American comfort" experience.
    Strengths and Weaknesses
    + Superb gun depression (-10)
    + Superb DPM (2601 base)
    + Superb view range (410)
    + Excellent turret protection
    + Excellent silver ammo alpha (390)
    + Excellent gun handling
    - Low silver ammo penetration (218)
    - Limited top speed (48)
    - Mediocre agility
    - Soft hull armor (~135mm effective)
    - Large profile
    - Mediocre camouflage (~22 with Camo crew)
    Recommended Equipment
    1. Optics
    2. Rammer
    3. VStab
    This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

    May I suggest doing Map Guides? Wargaming stopped doing Map Mondays and hoping someone would do the same content. Honestly most players don't know how to play the maps especially when the game has 20+ maps. Just like any FPS games map knowledge is a must have.

    Just on the AFK comment.... being stuck on the SEA Server is one of life’s challenges. We have an undersea cable to the Asian continent which, if the ANZ Server is down, ends up being a journey of high ping and lost connections. I would hate to be black banned through no deliberate action on my part 😊. Stay true to your relaxed and patient persona that draws me to your videos. Cheers and thanks as always for these excellent moments of tanking positivity.

    I absolutely love this series. Very helpful. I had played with a super unicum player who was teaching me to play, but he didn't give a lot of his thought process. After a year of re-rolling my stats and playing with him one or two games a day, I have gotten my account to over 1000 wn8. My recent is more around the 1500 range. Still working on getting to my goal of the 3000 range. I am on 4500 or so battels so far, and learning quick. My in game name is mfalcoperegrinus. Hopefully I can really get my WN8 and WR starts shooting up a bit faster.

    Really cool to see there are another very very skilled player on real WOT pc playing without gold ammo. impressive! Very interesting commentary about the tanks their characteristics. If we play without gold ammo, we need to play smart (strategy, using the lanscape characteristics etc) and use our tank their best advantages of characteristics etc. To survive battles against gold users.

    Love the M46 Patton. Aced it in my third game way back. It is so fun to play. The M46 and M48 share one characteristic I love in mediums: a quick aim time and the ability to snap shots with reasonable accuracy. Having good view range helps, because you can run vents, rammer and VStab, rather than optics, etc
    As always, great video. Keep them coming, mate.

    When I first got this tank I got a mastery badge even before got the top gun, turret, engine, and equipment, but my crew was fully mastered experienced as it was my original crew for American medium tanks so when got this tank I simply switched out the starting crew for my fully experienced crew making it much easier to play this tank. This might be why I found the tier8 M26 Pershing a better tank than what I told/thought and probably what contributed to my mastering it so much better, although it was much more easier and enjoyable in this tank (M46 Patton) than the tier8 (M26 Pershing). P.S. I’ve enjoyed your videos and strategies, tactics, play throughs keep it up !!

    I love the M46: excellent DPM, very good gun handling, great gun depression, substantial turret armor, great view range, good enough mobility. It's just such a sweet combination. I played my first battle in the M48A5 last night, and I really enjoyed that as well.
    I agree that winning the B line is normally the key to Mannerheim LIne. Yes, it's possible to win other ways, but in my experience the most common situation is that the team that wins the south tries to push across open ground into cap and gets farmed by campers, *unless* their team has won the B line and can flank the campers.

    • @SemperRight
      @SemperRight 5 років тому +3

      Not if you compare it with the other tier 9 mediums. The M46 has the 2nd lowest penetration, it's DPM is average, the turret doesn't reliably bounce shells, and the first 3 guns are absolutely abysmal.
      The Centurian 7/1 has 268 pen, compared to the M46's 218. The Obj. 430 plays like a complete boss compared with the M46. The Skoda T50 easily outclasses the M46. Even the WZ-120 has a better turret, higher alpha, more DPM. Only the other American medium has lower pen, but it at least has a 4 shell clip.

    • @matthbva
      @matthbva 5 років тому +5

      SemperRight I have all the tanks you mentioned-save the WZ-plus several other T9 meds. I enjoy playing them all. With that said... The Patton’s DPM is indeed well above average, and better than all the others you mentioned. It’s behind only the AMX 30 and E50 with 88 L100 in DPM among tier 9 meds. (The WZ absolutely does not have better DPM. Its base DPM is about 420 less than the Patton’s.) The solution to the low silver pen, when it’s an issue, is the 2 key. The fact that it’s a painful grind-if you’re too poor to free XP the intolerable modules-has nothing to do with whether the tank is good once it’s elite. The WZ’s first two guns suck, too. You’ve cherry-picked one or two characteristics that are better than the Patton’s on each of several tanks, but they all have substantial weaknesses that you ignore. The Cent has low DPM, poor gun handling on the move, and an iffy turret, which is exaggerated by the poor gun handling during movement. (The Patton’s turret more effective than the numbers would indicate because it can snapshot like a boss while playing ridgeline warrior. You don’t really need to stop moving. The Cent can’t snapshot for shit.) Then Cent is also less nimble. The WZ and 430 have lower DPM, worse gun handling, and shit gun depression-truly abysmal in the WZ’s case. (A near-impenetrable turret only helps up to the point where terrible gun depression forces you to expose your hull to get the shot.) And so on. Let me say again that I enjoy playing all these tanks very much, albeit for different reasons. I’m not saying they suck. Each one has features I like, and trying to make the different combinations work is a challenge. I’m simply saying that the Patton has a combination of very nice traits that make it especially pleasant to play.

    Nice video and nice explanation of mannerheim line, just had an ace tanker loss game on it with a mid tier IS from the same side. Were down five or six tanks at one point, got it back to a two vs two, sadly it was half health me and a t25/2 (both did over 3k damage) against their two full hp camping top tier tanks (polish heavy and t28 prot). The most depressing part was that they both farmed 2k damage and the heavy driver thought he played it correctly as he did win... That is how to stay beneath 47% win rate after 12k games...

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому

      Yea I've lost to top-tier camping heavies and it's frustrating. But as you said that's no way to win with any consistency. The T28 Prot is a tough tank to face late, if you can't flank it. Ditto for the Polish heavies, which have strong armor layouts.

I had planned to work up that line and even unlocked and purchased the Leo but I really like the STRV 74 and I have just never gotten around to moving that crew into the Leo. I did ok in the Pershing, but suck at the Patton, still trying to get around the tank. I end up being either too timid or too aggressive. Part of the reason, other than just sucking in general (😂) is that I don't play the tank too often,I pysch myself out when playing any of my tier 8/9+ tanks, and sometimes struggle against tier 8+. I'd love to get really good at this tank and better at WOT... XD

    Nice vid as per usual. Personaly I enjoyed my pershing time, good gun depression made it nice for me in combo with somewhat usable gun mantlet.
    Just one thing tho, strv's armor (all 3 of them) have next to no side armor. I think tier X has 30ish, if u can see even a bit of side aim for that, it will be an overmatch for all 91+mm guns. Also their fuel and ammo is on sides so there is that :)

    This was a well timed video, I'm in the middle of the Pershing and was curious about the Patton.
    Personally, I'm not finding the Pershing too painful, save that Tier 8 MM tends to be really crap. The turret isn't super reliable, but it is bouncy when you keep the front toward them. I'm really used to the Super Pershing, so slow isn't too awkward either. Glad to see the Tier 9 progresses the tank play style in a logical manner.
    Thanks also for the tip on positioning in Sand River, I have historically struggled with that map, even though I love it.
    You should mentor. Personally I'd pay you for that.....

    • @ARCNA442
      @ARCNA442 5 років тому +1

      The Pershing really isn't that bad of a tank and I'm not sure why everyone seems to hate it. As you say, the worst part about it is Tier 8 MM.

    • @pavelp80
      @pavelp80 5 років тому +1

      @@ARCNA442 It was my first medium and I returned to try ace tanker badge. I gave up 200 battles later. Part of the problem is that tier 8 is like one tier lower than tier 8 premium and two tiers lower than tier 9. Pershing is not especially good in anything. It used to have rather good gun handling. Now we have M4Rev, T25Pilot, PattonKR with better gun handling. Centurions have better turret and I think they are faster as well. And more accurate. Comparing T44 to M26 is like day and night - T44 has good turret, good gun handling, good camo, good speed and it only lacks some gun depression. In my opinion all tier 8 non-premium mediums except T44 are underpowered. M26 was not the tank I hated (it was PantherII), but I did not liked it neither.
      Patton is huge upgrade, it's not fast, but it's very agile, gun handling is great, DPM is great, acceleration is very good, turret is good after the buff and it's basically played to minimize time of exposure and amount of exposure. It's made for brawling and not sniping, due to low penetration and accuracy so it's somewhat complementary playstyle to LeopardPTA (which was fast and accurate and before they buffed it gun handling and DPM was horrible and it had poor gun depression).

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому

      The issue with the Pershing is the gun, armor, and mobility are all lackluster. What's the M46 has clear strengths.

  • @szethcaligo3735
    @szethcaligo3735 5 років тому +2

    Honestly Taugrim, in my opinion playing both north and south is viable. I tend to favor south most of the time though, because if you win the lower part you can farm their heavies by the pillbox while hull-down.
    One thing that a lot of people don't even realize is that you can traverse along the south by the water if you have a reasonably agile tank, so you can get all the way into K5 without getting shot to pieces. Where you then can sit hull down and farm their campers.
    Furthermore, I don't really like playing the north because of how easy it is to defend if someone's in G1. It's much safer, and much less of a gamble going along the water's edge to K5.
    It's worth mentioning that this is based on the north spawn, not the south spawn. There it's a little different.

    @Taugrim. Hey Taugrim, I've been observing your videos for a long time now, and love the analysis you provide, however at 14:51 you did make a statement which I found to be somewhat perhaps not completely as perceptive as could be. Pushing down the South, as you said earlier in the game you had the option of actually going down there given the compositions of the tanks upon each side, especially given the tiers. You have 2 T9, & 1 T 10 Heavies to there 2 T9 & 1 T10 Heavies. From experience I can tell you with a great degree of confidence, the greatest priority is not necessarily always about being able to go to a particular position upon the map that would seem to do well for your tank, but to place yourself in a position, especially as a medium tank driver to keep your high number composition of high tier tanks a live/support them in their ability to perform to a greater degree. At the end of the day the highest tier tanks should be upon the top of the listing when everything is said and done when it comes to who helped to carry the game in addition to those tanks which did best to contribute to uplifting their performances (assistance etc.) Too many games have I played where, I went dominated one side in a lower tier tanks with allies, saw that all our top tier tanks totally just lost and that was the game right there. It's just a matter of chess and value of points at the end of the game. If they have 3 Top tier heavies a mid tier med and 2 lower tier tds, but we have like 4 mind tier meds, and 2 low tier heavies. you are practically playing at a loss. As if I had a queen and 2x rooks vs your Queen bishop and knight. My pieces are of greater value, that is given the position is not so constructed to where I they have strategic trumps compensating for my differential in higher costed valued pieces based upon (coverage) and in this case applicable means to put in effective shots as much as vision, and armor. Therefore while it is true not going down there might be the greatest strategic choice at times, I would personally have made the choice to go down there in this instance given
    1.) The Highest composition of tanks for your teams after tier and type actually are heavies. meaning if they are rolled...well you just lose. half your tank composition is heavies and if you go down a 5 tank deficit at the start, there is nothing you can do about it. But at least had you went down there, as opposed to thinking you would be pushing across the open terrain, your natural influence of being in a position which attributes to the Critical Engagement of the Match where there will be the most activity due to everyone knowing they need to put in shots and essentially (expose themselves to do so) given they have to clear these tanks in order to win, so you don't even have to worry about not being able to attain enough damage because there are just too many tanks in the engagement not to be able to put in some quality amount of it. While simultaneously making sure your team...
    2.) Doesn't lose out in the engagement too much if you do lose/wins considerably given you are better player prioritizing pivotal tanks in the engagement and removing them, while others may not have the strategic sense of why doing so is of great importance to being able to carry out winning this game. To which …
    3.) If you have to fall back, at least then you know you have played to where you were able to put in considerable damage, and if you win but can't push through then you can just go alleviate the othersie but you've protected the majority of upstanding health and tank types upon your team which will contribute to winning the game.
    Back Side Teammates
    -------------------------------------
    -As you saw, much of your lower tier tank composition actually consisted of Tds, who were actually more so well fitted to take up the back side engagement as the looked to hold off the other tanks while you contributed in the southern engagement and then made your way back up later. As opposed to not being able to push up because they were playing back (which I personally think given the game was actually the right choice by them, though they might not have known it truly, it could probably somewhat subjective this to be the case, once you see one of your top tier tanks (You) push up like you did). and more so a strategic error made by you which you would find the case to be later given the lack of support from your further back teammates/ in abilitiy to push up/lack of meaningful activity at times in the match.
    I hope you take to heart what I was looking to express, as I am not berating you, nor calling you a bad player because you certainly aren't, but I still believed that providing some analysis here would help everyone here observing the video gain something more, so as that we can all improve as players, which is the whole point of coming here to analyze game play.
    -Cheers

    Great review but you forgot to mention the almost 120k xp you'll need to make this tank worth playing (tracks, turret, gun) plus the additional xp for the top engine. This tank was such a let down when I unlocked it, not much better than the Pershing when it's stock. Hopefully it's more enjoyable after the long grind for upgrades.

    Hello Taugrim,
    Really enjoying your vids,i am an amateur player,i heard in this video that you unlocked the Emil 1 tank.
    Is there a possibility to do a review for that tank in the near future?
    I really enjoy it,but it's a one trick pony and you have to be really flexible in that tank.
    I also enjoy mounting a heavy spall liner,because in most cases the enemies just start shooting HE or gold ammo at your turret or the turret cheeks.
    I would appreciate any tips or ideas about that tank,i researched the Emil 2 to full but i don't really enjoy that tank.
    Also 53% win rate on it.
    Thank you

      Heavy spall liner is not a good use of an equipment slot for most tanks - the gun handling for the Emil I is bad enough that you want to use VStab, GLD, and Vents.

    I'm playing on the EU server, and considering that it's an op tank (maybe not that much in nowadays meta, but still kicking it) it doesn't require that high amount of experience to get an ace tanker, or it's easy to get with it. Yesterday I played 8 battles with it and I got 3 ace tankers, while I only had I super cool match with 8.2K dmg and 8 kills but in a -2 match up. I'm going for the 3rd mark. Keep up the good work!

    I did not mind the pershing that much, played much worse tanks that's for sure. Only issue I really have with the tier 9 is gun will piss me off with the accuracy. Have a good side shot on object version 2 at about 350 meters. Miss 4 in a row which come back to bite me in the butt as he was the reason they won. Nothing I hate more than making the perfect play only to have the gun start misbehaving. Got to love the RNG when it is against you.

      Why would you hate pershing and love t20? They are very similar tanks, pershing being a better machine for its tier. Both have very unreliable guns, t20's gun is one of the worst I've played and its reload time at about 8s is a bad joke. T20 is boring. Pershing's gun is a bit better and it has at least ok turret armour. Still it should have 250 dmg for its reload time is even worse than t54 mod 1.

    Hey! I would love to hear on how much of a handicap playing without gold ammo and premium consumables is to your gameplay and overall game experience from a performance standpoint. Also do you feel there has been a steady power creep to the tanks they have been adding, mostly at tier 8+?

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому

      Yes, the power creep started with the tier 8 premiums and over-buffed armor of heavies from tier 8-10.
      It's detrimental for game balance and puts pressure on players to fire gold ammo.
      I do make use of premium consumables, in particular Auto Fire Extinguisher (totally worth it, pays for itself) and Large Repair Kit.
      Given that I don't use gold ammo in Random Battles, it means I have to choose my engagements carefully. I don't smash my face frontally against heavily-armored targets when I am in a tank with weak or mediocre armor.

    Not only it has just 216 pen, but it has huge penetration drop at distance for both AP and APCR. It struggles to pen even tier 8 heavies with AP :-(
    Another disadvantage is horrible camo, I think it's on par with E50 or Type61, but it's definitely among the worst on tier. It was not always like this, it was silently nerfed with HD model when it received first accuracy buff and temporary huge, ugly, inflated turret.
    Very good review anyways. I struggle a bit on city maps like Siegfried line with this tank :-(

    Love your video as always, though I disagree with your decisions in this one.
    As soon as the Oho was spotted having retreated you should have comunicated with the TVP and Charioteer to immediately push the 1 shot TVP and the 2 shot 257 (or even just gone in yourself, turned their turrets and hoped for your comrades to land one measly shot on their ass) which should result in you taking 1 hit from the 257 optimaly (ofc can go worse). The 1 shot Skorpion would have still been alive, and you could've pushed in waaayyy earlier to support your S. Conq (along with the Cent + Kanonen already en route). Your twiddling around there left you in arty land longer, you miss out on a nice crossfire opportunity on all those juicy tanks in the south and let the S.Conq die and drag the game out much longer for not spending the taking of maybe 1 hit from the 257. To me thats a case of W-Key not found, where it should have been pushed ;-) ... then again I somewhat trust teammates more and I play on EU.
    Still loving the videos as always, great job and still the best go to channel for well explained tactics and behaviour in my opinion (Zeven was pretty good too, but he kind of stopped uploading I think).

      It depends how much you trust in your pubbies. If they seem like they're playing smart, I'll either just make the push and assume they'll follow, or I'll communicate in chat.
      I've lost plenty of battles pushing forward assuming people will help me in situations where it's obvious, only to have them cower uselessly while I die.

      If you're new to the game, I think playing around up to tier 6 for the first 1000-2000 battles is a good idea. You can work on your crews (hopefully getting them to 100% trained and 100% on 1st crew skill), learn the maps, and learn how the various mechanics work.
      The bottom line is this game is pretty grindy, especially when you have stock tanks. Once you finish a line or two for a given nation, the other lines for that nation are much easier.
      If you can afford to pay for premium subscription, it's worth it in terms of the increase to credit and crew XP.
