LTG Review/Guide, Common Mistakes When Pushing

  • I review the LTG, a tier 7 Russian light tank in World of Tanks (WoT), with replays of tier 9 Redshire and tier 8 Murovanka battles.
    This is my 2nd stint playing the LTG and I'm doing much better this time around :)
    Strengths and Weaknesses
    + Superb camouflage (~40 with Camo + BIA)
    + Excellent DPM (1800 base)
    + Good turret protection (~120mm effective)
    + Very low profile hull
    + Solid alpha (180)
    + High alpha HE round (300)
    - Very poor gun depression (-5)
    - Low view range (360 base) makes it difficult to reach 445m
    - Poor accuracy (0.40 base)
    - Hit every ugly branch as it fell down the tech tree
    Recommended Equipment
    1. Optics
    2. Rammer
    3. VStab or Vents
    I prefer VStab for improved gun handling, but Vents improves the view range
    This video is part of my "Road to Unicum" series in which I share what I learned as I progressed towards account Unicum rating (top 1%) with silver ammo only. I talk through how I'm reading the battle as it unfolds and discuss key decisions and mistakes. My hope is that these videos meaningfully help players improve their gameplay.

    As a light player I find your playstyle not boring but methodical. You are trying to minimize the impact of luck in the equation by repeatable and structured gameplay. Unfortunately there is much less bush cover in the console version so we have to rely on active scouting in a faster paced game. There is a fine line between being useless and suicidal in a fast paced game though . keep up the good work.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому +20

      This is exactly what I'm trying to do - minimize luck with methodical, structured gameplay. Couldn't have said it better myself.
      Also, other players get away with yolo all the time, but when I try it I die horribly.

    • @nvrumi
      @nvrumi 5 років тому +7

      I could not have said it better. There is this element of deliberateness (is that a word?) in Taugrim's gameplay. I want to win the match. Sometimes the aggressive YOLO works, but never for me. Use of the game mechanics in a methodical and intelligent manner will improve the odds of a win. Keeping the light tank alive to play the vision game later in the match also helps.
      I have the LTG in my garage but am working on my MT-25 crew to move up before I activate the new tank.
      Thanks, Taugrim for these very instructional videos.

      Ozgur, well said. It bothers Me that they removed the cover on many of the console maps. Our maps have been dumbed down.

      @@taugrim I learned a lot from your replays. Although some of the tactics are not that effective in the console version I try to apply most of the principles you summarized in your guide video. That does not give me epic one shot results; but consistent play even as bottom tier. ua-cam.com/video/XqW2zq0lreE/v-deo.html

      Ruinberg, the zero line away from the city use to have a lot more trees. The removed them all and pulled the city out further. the city use to be a smaller portion of the map. I just noticed yesterday, Thiepval ridge map has been flattened and many of the trees removed.

    I really really enjoy your videos. I think they are not aimed at very new players (quickybaby style / epic battle replays / tank reviews where you just read the stats).
    They are more aimed at players with 800-1500 wn8 or so, and I like that. Lemmingrush does the same type of videos, and skill4ltu too. Circon and SirFoch have okay videos but they never explain what they're doing. SirFoch is more comedic. Jingles is dead. So we just have you and lemmingrush.
    Keep doing what you do. At this point I understand everything and all your reasoning, and I can usually predict what will happen next and the best course of action, but I can't replicate that myself without the "looking back at that, mabye..." view or the "arm chair general" outlook, because I have way too many things to focus about and just can't micromanage enough to look at my map often enough. Too busy thinking about something else, or where to aim or what ammo to load or how to go around this rock, etc... just micro problems preventing me from taking a step back, looking at the bigger picture of what is happening and checking my map. When I watch my own replays I cringe at too many stupid mistakes and lack of awareness, because I am "free" and can constantly watch the map and the gameplay without having to actually drive and click and stuff. I don't know if anyone else has/had this problem or if you understand me.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому +6

      > Too busy thinking about something else, or where to aim or what ammo to load or how to go around this rock, etc...
      I think one thing you can do is anticipate things that are likely to happen and will impact you directly.
      E.g. if you are in the D5-D6 bush in Redshire from north spawn, keep half an eye out for a light tank coming up from the river to proxy spot you.
      But other than that, it's important to focus. E.g. watching the entire minimap can be overwhelming. Like in that Redshire battle, in real-time I was mostly focusing on the 4/5/6/7 lanes, but not that closely tracking 1/2/3 and 9/0.
      Or in other words, focus on areas you can influence with your gun or spotting, and in down time figure out whether it's time to flex to another area.

      @@taugrim I understand what you mean, it's just that I don't make enough downtime for myself because I'm always too "in the moment". Tactically though I think im a very good player and thats what makes these videos fun. Almost validates me :P

      Minimap awareness is usually the last thing new players learn. As you said, most new players have a hard enough time keeping tabs on what's happening in front of them. You have to train yourself to do it religiously. The thing is once you start doing this you'll find it gives you breathing space. If you see a flank falling 1 minute or more before it happens then you'll relocate to counter that because only tanks that are alive can impact the game right! For example, in the Redshire game, Avalon held his position and didn't push with the E50 etc. He knew because of his awareness that he'd be pushing into a crossfire and most likely wouldn't survive. Better for him to remain hull down and defend from his position.

      @@thesabreferret It is definitely possible. Compare my stats in the T-50-2 to my stats in the Type 64. Man... that E 50... went and pushed 9-0 with a 5 tank force (Type 4, E 50, T28, T20 and O-Ho), and managed to lose against a 3 tank force (Conqueror, Somua SM and Tiger I) because they wanted to push into a crossfire, then wanted to berate me because I didnt push into the crossfire with them so I could die just like they did... I should never assume pubbies are capable enough to handling overmatches though... my fault entirely.. lol.
    I considered asking you in match to come help me, because I knew the LTTB would show up along with the Conqueror and I donked my first kill shot which would have kept me alive a little longer agaisnt the LTTB, but I knew focusing the Conqueror out would be important. The position I took is actually fairly good for getting shot into cap and into the enemy teams campy hill, along with the D6 lt bush (I blind hit the LTTB, but bounced him).

    I am a fan of your work in WOT, especially light tanks. I have been told for years that the 'proper way' to approach a bush for spotting is in a straight line arriving in an almost 90 degree angle; then to perform a quick turn placing the front of your vehicle out and away from the bush for a rapid departure if required. Its all a minor point I know...I just do not relish having to dwell on the do or do not's next time I approach a bush to spot. Thank you again for your work.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  4 роки тому

      I've generally found that if you have to reverse-face in a bush, it's because you're too far from any nearby hard cover - either a ridge or a building/rock - in which case it's probably not a particularly safe place to spot from if you plan to use your gun.

    I have 2 marked my T92 light tank thanks to your videos and It would be great if you could give me some advice to get me motivated and push it to the 3rd

    Nice job, as always, Taugrim. If people consider this boring, that is too bad for them. People said that Tim Duncan (NBA player, from Wake Forest, that played with the Spurs) was boring. They trashed him because he was fundamentally sound, to the point where Shaq referred to him as the Giant Fundamental. Replays don't have to be filled with effects, music, etc. Replays should be educational first and fun second. This is a "how to" guide and not a "look at me in my one game beating up on morons" channel.
    Keep up the great work, buddy. Will see you on the battle field.

    I currently started grinding LTG cuz I bought LT-432. So surprised to see you posted this vid!
    Me personally I cannot live without Gold ammo. I put like 3:2 for almost every tank (3 standard ammo for 2 prems).
    (Think of meeting a Japanese heavy, penning them reliably makes me feel less bad, who can aim at one pixel of my exposed outer track and still do 500 dmg)
    But I have a big respect to those who are able to use silver only and still do great with them.
    Thanks for these videos

    i was in a match with you the other night, and thought, " I recognize that name somewhere". lol..... Then I see this video and it hits me. Not sure what the outcome was, but I know I was monitoring some toxicity in the game over the weekend. Had some muppet from the LATAM server on the central one and after-game messaged me in Spanish, all I could make out was "Cheater" and "mods", which I don't run any. Was in hellcat on Derpenburg and used bushes to kill his Jackson without being spotted. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you again out there.......

      Taugrim & I were in a match on Lake (encounter at the white circle in the town on the east, lake road in the middle, valley in the west), & we wiped them out. Latter on a team against Taugrim, he was the last one killed. Which goes to show you, not all games are winnable, so... Good Luck, (plan your moves) & Have Fun (ya know, why you play this game to begin with!). (sic)

      Some teams are simply uncarryable
      I had a battle about 45 minutes ago in my AMX 12t where I did over 2k damage and 4 kills and the rest of my team combined for ~1.2k and 1 kill. Nine friendlies has 0 damage.
      It was really sad, because I was spotting capably too.

    • @taugrim

      Any tier 9 except for the Chinese light would be a good choice. It's a matter of whether you prefer an autoloader (AMX 13 90), good turret (T-54 ltwt), gun depression and/or derp (T49), or speed (Ru 251).
      You want high tier battles as there is a lot of HP on both sides, so plenty to spot and deal damage on.
      I would avoid the tier 10 light due to their being underpowered as a class.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому +1

      Avalon304 is a really good guy, but he and I both have a limit in terms of stupidity of friendlies. The E50 and O Ho could have cost us the game by throwing their tanks away, especially with the enemy Conqueror.
      Our E50 and O Ho committed very common (and preventable) mistakes when pushing. Hence the video title.

      @@taugrim indeed. Over extending is a game-wide affliction which NO server or player with common sense is safe from!! I love how you TRY to punch home the fact that COMMON SENSE is a HUGE part of being a decent player (above average) which isn't hard to attain IF one chooses to use said common sense. Yet 3/4's if not more of the games player base is lost to that very fact sadly..

    Thank you. You are the bomb. You teach. I just wish I could remember everything but what I do remember helps me. Thank you. Lemmingrush is great too but often what he does requires a skill level I just do not have. You do have a much higher skill level than me but as you say what you show is 90% repeatable if a person is prepared to learn from you and can master the basics of controlling a lllight tank around. Emotions are another thing. Remembering why I am doing this. To have fun. But as well you need to win sometimes and learn. and Understand that sometimes you can do all the right things on your favorite map in a great match up and get in you fave bush and some aggressive guy in a premium tier 8 light he just got can just yolo into you at the 20 second mark and you get hit by 2 arty and a TD. You just have to laugh and get another beer. But that is different to getting beaten in the same way over and over and not knowing why. That is not fun. You are the cure for that.

    Boring is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. I think that it is similar to how some people think an MMA fight is boring if there isn’t a KO or submission. Frankie Edgar and GSP are two of my favorite fighters because of the immense skill they possess although they both have a tendency to “go to the judges” rather than get the KO or submission. I’ll take a technicality skilled fighter over a flashy showboat any day. I watch QB because he is an entertaining UA-camr and I like him but I don’t learn as much from him. I actually learn quite a bit from this channel and I look forward to new videos.

    I usually go E6 and indicate our guys on hill that I will spot scouts in that famous bush. However that position is very aggressive and it cannot be taken if there are lot of enemies on 9-0 line.

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому

      It's effective for spotting their heavies as they try to cross the gaps down the 9/0 line, but if you are spotted it's super risky and you have to run across a lot of exposed ground to find meaningful hard cover.

    Taugrim. I have a question at the end. My wife is not a tank person but when she heard me watching you she commented about how you are a natural teacher and easy to listen to and very good at explaining concepts. (I was a bit jealous) Don't know what you do for a living but you are a natural teacher.I tried out heavies but just cant get it, You are just lit up when you fight and get creamed by arty. How is this fun? I gave up. I am a light tank guy trying to get into mediums so I can be relevant on more maps. So is driving a heavy an art? People say noobs should start with heavies they are easier. But I just took to lights and heavies seem to get stuck somewhere and if the arty takes an interest you are stuffed. I just feel I have some control of my fate in a light or medium. Is there a skill or do I just stay away from them?

    • @taugrim
      @taugrim  5 років тому

      I considered teaching right out of college but went into consulting and software development instead, and I found plenty of opportunities to teach, coach, and mentor others in terms of leadership fundamentals, business skills, and technical skills.
      Heavies have a relatively straightforward playstyle. I find these days with the heavy armor inflation that they're harder to play with silver ammo only. And for the most part they are limited in terms of spotting ability.

    Great video as always! Unfortunately I think most players accidentally hit the "M" key at some point early in their gaming experience and have been playing with no visible minimap ever since... Edit- While watching the video you mentioned the horrible gun depression inherent in most Soviet tanks. Have you obtained/played the LT 432 light with its unheard of 7 degrees depression? If so what did you think? Some people are calling it OP, it definitely seems better than the LTTB

      You may have done that but in general HE and derp cannons don't work, except for derp-specific tanks (KV-2, Pz IV H, M4 Sherman, etc).
