My absolute favourite record of all time, such a shame that you're getting into them after they've broken up because the songs get a to whole new level when you're seeing them performed live. For me there won't be another band quite like Dillinger. R.I.P to the best
I know, I'm a bit heartbroken about this fact as well. And everyone in the comments who has seen them perform says they were just insane.
FINALLY
This is my favourite one overall and imo it's their most mature work and their best. Mouth of Ghosts is BEAUTIFUL and the short brutal tracks are just kinda perfect. Milk Lizard is a great rock song and Black Bubblegum is amazing as a pop song... Dillinger making pop music... and it WORKED.
Well said. Black Bubblegum surprised me too, so different for a Dillinger song! I guess I never shoulda tried to pin a specific sound to their music though, they're always changing it up. It's one of the reasons why they're such an awesome band.
@@mollyesanborn I think they might be my overall favourite metal band from the early 2000's to the mid 2010's overall... And I think this record in particular cemented that for me for sure. Calculating Infinity is the math-metalcore classic but this album isn't just FUN but it also oozes *class*. The hilarious horn section on Milk Lizard and the utterly beautiful Mouth of Ghosts made these guys truly stand out and more than just a metal band: it just made them a great band overall.
@@emeraldcelestial1058 that is a very interesting statement considering that there are bands from that era like system of a down, deftones, slipknot, etc. I really respect that this opinion, I’m just getting into this band at the moment and I think you really might be onto something there 👀
@@utax22 Deftones: masters of chill, sexy brutality.
System: Masters of insane political folk metal.
Slipknot: Masters of shock and theatrics.
Mastodon: Masters of sludgemetal/psychobilly epics.
Dillinger: Masters of mathcore and jazzcore.
Converge: Masters of metalcore.
@@emeraldcelestial1058 this is just so spot on 🔥💯
This was a watershed album both in style and production for DEP. For me, each Dillinger album has it's own uniqueness and place in the history and evolution of their sound. I'm loving your reactions to one of my favourite bands of all time!
So happy to read this! Dillinger is such an awesome band, glad that fans of their music are getting into these videos because I love making them and discovering their music. And I couldn't agree more about their albums, each so far has been so unique but also so distinctly a Dillinger Escape Plan project if that makes sense.
Excellent reaction and commenting! I love Miss Machine and this album so much. Mouth of Ghosts is pretty much my favourite DEP song. Greetings from Finland!
Thanks for watching the video! Mouth Of Ghosts is a gorgeous closing note for this album and very unexpected too. I love how they branched out and embraced a softer side to their sound on this record at times, and this track really highlighted that.
Your reaction to the vocal switch ups has me STOKED for the day you finally check out The Black Queen.
I'm so excited for The Black Queen and hearing more of Greg's stuff outside of The Dillinger Escape Plan. Once I finish up with Dillinger's albums I'll be sure to give The Black Queen a listen :)
God bless you for being that one person who is giving this band the attention they deserve. The most underrated heavy band of all time in my opinion
They're fantastic, I couldn't agree more!
this is a wild opinion, tdep is massively popular for how abrasive their music is, and they are practically synonymous with the entire mathcore genre. of course bands like this aren't going to be as popular as queen
@@carsonnichols7428 I didn’t say they should be as popular as Queen what in the hell 😂😂😂 what a reach
Of course they are exceptionally abrasive they are also absolute geniuses and innovators. They should be more widely recognized for their influence in my opinion. That’s all I’m saying lmfao
I love them but are the underrated? I could see them being lesser known than they should be, but I feel like they are appropriately rated by those who know who they are.
hell yeah! my fav dillinger album! hope you enjoy it!
Great pick for a favorite album! I did love this one quite a bit, so fun to listen to.
No way you're reacting to this album! This has been a big favorite of mine recently!!
I also adore your shirt!
That's so awesome, glad you're digging this album too! Dillinger is such a fantastic band, their whole discography so far has been impeccable.
Ire works was my introduction to Dillinger back in 2007 and I've loved em ever since. It's awesome to see someone go through the insanity that is their discography.
This is a great album to get introduced to their music to, a little bit more on the electronic/atmospheric side compared to their earlier stuff but still so aggressive. I'm loving their progression so far, it's really fun to do these little reaction series for specific bands like Dillinger and hear their entire body of work.
I ended up seeing them right after the EP when Greg was still kinda new.. I was there to see another band, but I left that night a fan. The most intense stage show I'd seen in a long time!
Horse hunter features the guitarist from the band Mastodon Brent Hinds. Highly recommend Mastodon. Can't wait for Option Paralysis
Ooh, Mastodon! I'm gonna try and get to their discography soon, I'm excited to hear their music. And Option Paralysis is sure to be a fun listen too.
@@mollyesanborn Mastodon are GREAT. Their first 4 records are basically PERFECT. I really hope you start listening to them soon. Have a great rest of your week, Molly!
@@emeraldcelestial1058 I'm gonna try and get a Mastodon reaction up in January! I wish I could upload more videos in one week lol, there are so many albums and bands I still want to hear so bad.
@@mollyesanborn I'm really looking forward to your reactions to the first two Mastodon records. They are literally two of my favourite metal records ever I think you will have a blast with the second one for sure. Remission is fantastic but Leviathan is one of the most epic and fun metal records ever. Take care!
I really enjoy Brent Hinds in that song. I don't like his band at all, but the EP they did of his songs I was the first time I enjoyed it and went back. I feel I would really like something he did more alone apart from the band, as I feel if I ever like any little part of a song from that band it is his workings.
Option is my my favourite Dillinger record. Looking forward to see the video.
Fun tidbits: Dimitri (first singer) provided backing vocals on Fix Your Face.
He also did the cover art for this album, Miss Machine and the release after this (Option Paralysis).
Nice, thanks for the facts! That's cool that he designed the cover art too.
Fun reactions. Loving the DEP streak lately!
I've gotten a bit addicted to their music, not gonna lie. Glad you're enjoying the videos!
time is always right behind us
like the lamb under the gun
I'll hold on to this forever
that is never long enough
Dead As History is such a great song, that end bit with these lyrics is beautiful.
Heck ya!!! Awesome reaction! I remember seeing DEP at a festival when Ire Works was just released, and it was mind blowing. The next few albums are so amazing! I am so excited for your Option Paralysis reaction/review!!
Oh man I'm sure seeing Dillinger perform in person was amazing! Lucky. And I'm really looking forward to hearing Option Paralysis and the rest of their albums as well.
Oh, Ire Works is a masterpiece, like the others Dillinger's albums obviously, but this is by far my 2nd favorite of all times, and the #1 is Option Paralysis. I'm waiting your reaction. Dillinger Escape Plan is my favorite band.
I'm really looking forward to hearing Option Paralysis!
Niiiice, my favorite album by one of my favorite bands!! Dead as History and Mouth of ghosts are perfect songs in my opinion
Dillinger are my favorite band and this is my favorite album. Love the reaction.
Such a fantastic band! I've already become a fan and I haven't even heard all of their albums lol.
Great reaction. Nice to see you digging this.
Thanks for watching! Yeah Dillinger is awesome.
Love the snare on Black Bubblegum. Wondering if they mixed it to have that snare drum pop or smack... like when chewing gum and blowing bubbles.
going back and learning a bit of their songs. just love their rhythm's. just like how they make 8 notes sound so insane by cutting them up in interesting ways
their rhythmic feel is just so unique (and i love meshuggah, periphery, botch, converge, black dahlia, lorna) but like still feel like dillinger is the most chaotic while remaining rhythmically more restrained than most (less notes)
Lot of Ire Works lovers here (and if I'm being honest every Dillinger album is great), but I'm honestly intrigued and invested to watch you go down the rabbit hole and listen to the rest of what they had to offer, particularly Option Paralysis and Dissociation.
Ahh I'm so excited, can't wait to hear them all!
The song Dissociation itself always makes me cry
@@Neorigg Same.
Hey Molly! I love your videos, and i was wondering if you have plans on listening to a Gojira ou Isis album. Probably two of my favorite bands at the moment and i would tô see you react to them! Keep up the great content!
Glad you're enjoying the channel! I've actually heard all of Gojira's albums already (great band!) and I did an album ranking video for them a while back on my channel if you're interested. As for ISIS I'd love to do some reaction videos for them. Panopticon especially gets requested a lot, so I'll have to keep that in mind for the future :)
If you like tool, neurosis and the Melvins chances are you will absolutely Love Isis (the band)! And if you don't like any of those bands you will after listening to Isis (the band)! Start with Oceanic(2002) then progress forward to Panopticon(2004).
Love your reviews!
I agree with the top comment, raw animalistic energy and smooth jazz moments, insane percussion, I can't see why this band is not more popular
I agree with you, Greg's vocals are refreshingly coherent.. I'm loving these videos Molly. Keep up the good work.
I know, it's crazy to me how intensely he can be yelling the lyrics but I can still clearly hear what he's saying. Very talented vocalist for sure.
the album after this one is my personal favorite its like they just matured to perfection.
Ahhh that makes me even more excited to hear it!
I really hope she gets to One of us is the killer! That’s my favorite from them, it’s utterly polished to almost a perfect degree.
ahh sweet glad you enjoyed it, Option Paralysis will blow you sideways ;D stand out tracks on that album for me are Room Full of Eyes and I Wouldn't If You Didn't.... you'll love Widower i'm sure
Nice, I'm looking forward to hearing it!
Be sure to check out The Black Queen - Fever Daydream, one of Greg’s amazing side projects!
Absolutely! I'll plan on a Black Queen reaction when I finish up with Dillinger's albums.
Im glad you have been enjoying their discography so far, if you want smth in the same vein as them just more modernised might i suggest The Callous Daoboys albums like Die On Mars & Celebrity Therapist.
They’re a mish-mash of TDEP alongside bands like The Number Twelve Looks Like You, Every Time I Die, Daughters, Botch and such cuz hard to pinpoint their influences
Their recent work has some very interesting influences from the likes of The Mars Volta to some art rock and such. Though my fav track is The Elephant Man In The Room which isn’t rlly much on he creativity department but enough uniqueness that makes it interesting and fun (my fav part is just the sudden chaos after a certain part)
Thanks for the suggestion. I've actually just started getting into their music, Celebrity Therapist is such a fun listen! There will be a video up on my channel shortly where I'll be talking about that album a little bit.
Please react to Oni by Darko US!! It is my favourite album and completely illustrates what a band can do with only two members
I will make sure that one is on my list, thanks!
Yes!
:)
My favorite album from Dillinger and my favorite song “Mouth of Ghosts” ^^
Mouth Of Ghosts is such a great track, I agree!
I highly recommend the band Between the buried and me, more specifically their album "colors". Also loved the reaction :)
Yes! I've got em on my list :)
@@mollyesanborn But I do recommend to also go chronological order. Their evolution is very interesting and you'll be like "is this the same band"? XD
Give the band Killer Be Killed a try. Greg sings and plays guitar on this alongside Troy Sanders from Mastodon, Max from Sepultura among other bands, and Dave Eilitch on the first album, Ben Koller on their second
Sounds pretty awesome, I'll have to check their music out!
👍 Another great job!
Thanks! :)
This was the first album they did without drummer Chris Pennie and it broke my heart. As a drummer myself, and as someone who was in a hardcore / grind core / experimental band in high school, TDEP were my number one influence and Chris was my idol. I feel they did their best work when he was a part of the band.
Oh really I didn't realize! Probably one of the reasons why this album does definitely have a different sound to it than their earlier stuff. Do you know why he left the band?
I absolutely love Chris Pennie's drumming but for me when Billy Joined the band the percussion just got stepped up a level
@@mollyesanborn he stepped in as the drummer for Coheed and Cambria. He just wanted to explore a different sound from my understanding. Bummed me out, but it is what it is. Still love him and TDEP regardless. I’m not sure what he’s doing now days, but I know he’s not with Coheed anymore.
@@tomwilliams3965 fair enough, in my opinion none of their material comes close to Calculating Infinity, Irony is a Dead Scene or Miss Maschine. Those albums are God tier.
Chris was my fav too. I thought I remembered reading that he still wrote most of the drum parts for Ire Works before his departure. I loved Gil Sharone's drumming on this album though - really groovy and memorable stuff. Whatever he lacked in some of the technicalities of their other drummers, he totally made up for with his pure precision and nuance.
I'll check it out, you rock Molly
Yes, definitely check out Ire Works! Fantastic album.
Great reaction to a great album. Looking forward to you listening to Option Paralysis from 2010. That is my fav from Dillinger.
Ahh I can't wait to hear it!
Brent Hinds from Mastodon is featured in Horse Hunter
Thanks for letting me know! I'm gonna have to do some Mastodon videos now...
This album's got qualities to it
I was just listening to this album for my first time 2 days ago haha, I wasn't into it at first but I've been starting to like it a little bit since then. I think it's just because Calculating Infinity was so chaotic and this one was way easier to follow along with. It's definitely not a bad album at all, I was just disappointed that it was Dillinger, but I'm starting to get into it after watching this video, I'll probably give it a re-listen soon. Loved the video as always 🤘🤘
Yeah it's a bit different compared to Calculating Infinity, isn't it? I agree that I love how raw their earlier stuff sounds, they just pour every ounce into it and hold nothing back. But Ire Works is dope too, I love the ambiance they utilize on this album. I'm definitely excited to hear what's coming next on Option Paralysis!
Just finished re-watching your Miss Machine reaction and came to check if you've done Ire Works, crazy timing 😅
Oh NICE! That is fantastic timing. Hope you enjoyed the Ire Works video :)
Wonder if you've ever heard The Chariot. Specifically the album long live. Bouncy tdep-like grooves..mathy stuff. They were around in the early 2000s. big rec, a favorite album.
Keep up the good work, feller
YES!!! haven't watched yet... i can't wait to see your reaction XD
Hope you enjoyed the video! :)
Your face really portrayed what I remember thinking/feeling during all those weird instrumental parts in this thing. Definitely one of their most experimental, and I love it for that. Miss Machine is just a smidge better, but those 2 are for sure their best
Haha everyone's telling you to listen/react to Mastodon and SYL now too. Make sure you're still having fun with this yourself and that you actually listen to what you're most interested in next. We're all just telling you certain things because we know you'll like them.
This is a great channel, I feel like blasting Ire Works in my car on the way to work now lol
Yep, such an experimental album for sure! I'm honestly torn as to which album of theirs has been my favorite so far, they all bring something a bit different to the table. But so glad you're enjoying the channel and I've re-inspired you to go listen to Ire Works again haha! Every suggestion I've gotten so far for a band or album has been spot on, you all never fail with introducing me to some fantastic stuff.
Cant wait till you get to Option Paralysis and Widower!
I know people have been recommending The Black Queen but I must echo that. It's truly amazing how this man can go from the most animalistic screams to lush RnB vocals. I've always liked TDEP but TBQ is something I've come to love. His solo albums are gems as well!
I will definitely have to plan a reaction to The Black Queen when I finish up with TDEP's discography!
I fucken love this album so much. It's like the best post break-up love/hate letter of all time.
I love the albums you review
That's awesome! Glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Time for a piping hot Dillinger hot take! Gil fit this band the best of all their drummers. Sure, Billy might have better technique, and Chris might have that ferocity, but Gil had a versatility and smoothness behind the kit that surpassed them both.
Anyway, if you’re looking for an album similar to this one, I would suggest “Plague Soundscapes” by The Locust. They’re closer to grindcore than DEP’s math metal sound, but the instrumental arrangements on that album are astonishing.
Cool, I'll have to make sure that album is on my list!
if they react to the locust they need to react to canada songs by daughters.
Facts, Gil was like a mix of the others styles, had the robotic speed like Chris and the flow like Billy. It’s crazy because he just showed up out of nowhere since he’s a reggae drummer.
This was the first Dilinger album that I had listened to after previously only having listened to irony is a dead scene and it made me fall in love with them. They became one of my favourite bands and after seeing them live no other band could compete with them.
That's awesome, I'm sure seeing them live was amazing. They're a crazy talented band, that's for sure. I've quickly become a fan as well.
@@mollyesanborn I’ve seen some incredible bands in my time, Pantera, Metallica, Faith No More, Slipknot, The Who, Black Sabbath, Nine Inch Nails, Mastodon, At The Drive In to name a few but DEP were something else live. I walked into the show knowing their music and their reputation as a live band but I wasn’t prepared for them. Hey are by far the best band that I’ve seen live and I feel sorry for anyone who didn’t get he chance to see them live. They truly missed out.
I can only imagine how many bands you have in your list. Any idea when you'll make it to Fear Factory's debut album? I know you'll LOVE IT!
Haha yeah I've got quite the list going, that's for sure! Fear Factory is up there though, I've been wanting to hear some music from them for a while now.
@@mollyesanborn oh boy!! We so excited lol. They have a big discography too. I think 12 albums now ...? There's a lot of music to listen to. 🤘
You should check out Killswitch Engage. Or listen to Tallah. Or listen to Ice Nine Kills. Or listen to As I Lay Dying. Or check out Lorna Shore. Maybe even Asking Alexandria. Possibly Upon A Burning Body. Just a few mentions haha! Subscribed today btw!
Thank you for the suggestions and for subscribing! I'm familiar with Lorna Shore and have seen them live too, amazing band! And Tallah's most recent release was AMAZING, I still have to give Matriphagy a listen. The rest of the bands on your list though I haven't heard anything from yet so I'll have to check them out.
molly , why won't you cover pantera? I mean unless you've heard all of their albums already... still would like to hear your ranking and opinions of their albums. If by any chance you haven't heard all of their stuff i strongly suggest it more than any other metal band. your vids are entertaining . hope to see you get on that
I will be sure to take note of this, Pantera's been on my list for a long time now! I definitely want to hear their music.
The thumb nail had me. You honestly looked disturbed by this album like you were trying to figure out life or possibly a bad life choice. I'm glad you like The Dillinger Escape Plan it was a highly intelligent band with great dynamics that are not seen off in this kind of genre. I think you'd like Drive Like Jehu's 1st album as well if you like The Dillinger Escape Plan
Haha, that thumbnail had me cracking up when I made it for this video. Pretty sure I took it from 6:45 in the video during When Acting As A Particle. I'll have to check out Drive Like Jehu in the future, I know some other people have suggested them as well.
Not just their first album. Yank Crimes as well lol
seconded, drive like jehu and dillinger could both be in my top 5... assumed i was the only one who even listened to both
EARLYY
Nice!! Hope ya enjoy the video :)
I absolutely do recognize this band, their 1st track reminds me of "B.Y.O.B" by System Of A Down, I just never heard this band on Seattle radio. 📻 This is SO awesome!!!😎👍🎵🎶🤘🎤
Now that you've mentioned it I can kinda hear a slight similarity to B.Y.O.B. and Fix Your Face too. In general both bands do utilize a lot of crazy back and forth dynamics with their sound so I guess that makes sense.
@@mollyesanborn; I definitely have to check out Dillinger Escape Plan again, haven't heard their music 🎶 in a few years. It's good to refresh & start over!!!
the loud family - plants and birds and rocks and things. It's one of the most overlooked albums from the 90's.
Nice I'll check that one out too!
@@mollyesanborn Also in similar vein - Matthew Sweet - Altered Beast, forgotten gem.
Please do an album review on the new upcoming band Tallah! They are amazing! They call themselves Nu Core. They have two amazing albums “Matriphagy” and “The Generation of Danger”. Both concept albums. Like a mix of Linkin Park, Slipknot, Korn, but sound fresh
Glad you mentioned Tallah, I've got a video coming soon where I will be mentioning their newest album ;)
@@mollyesanborn looking forward to it! Love the reactions!
She's cute AND loves dillinger? 🥺
This album, as someone else said, was a watershed moment for them. For me though, I always will pick the next three records of theirs for that style. This one feels like a foreshadowing of the best of that jazz-electronic-metalcore fusion but I could never connect with it here cause it always felt a little too scattered to me; and not in the great manic sense you’d expect from dep, just kinda messy. There ARE absolutely dep classics here like fix your face, black bubblegum, milk lizard, and dead as history, but imo this sound thrived most once they figured out how to make everything flow into each other smooth as butter as strange as the fusions are. Loved watching your reaction still though- glad you liked it!
Wow reading this makes me that much more excited for the rest of their albums then. I actually thought Ire Works had a pretty good flow to it overall, so if they only continue to hone the sound they took this album in the direction of then I'll be in for a real treat on my next few DEP videos!
Saw you reviewed some Rage Against The Machine and wondered if you’ve checked out Audioslave’s first record. Amazing stuff!
No, I haven't heard anything from Audioslave yet! I'll have to check them out.
Do you have a chance to review Fleshwater's album?
I've given it a few listens, haven't filmed a review or anything for it yet. I'll have to consider that!
If you like more technical check out: Spiral Architect, Spastic Ink, Dark Matter Secret, 7for4 and Ring of Saturn.
Give a listen to Mr. Bungle's "Disco Volante"
Definitely looking forward to that one, I'll try and get to it soon!
Favorite album not close
this is one of the best experimental albums ever. By the way you should check Strapping Young Lad if you do not know them already, they fuse industrial elements and metal and Devin Townsend is amazing vocalist, plus they have only 5 albums so you will burn through their discography fast and each album is different!
Yes, this album is so experimental and I LOVE IT! So many fusions of sounds and genres in one project. And I've got Strapping Young Lad on my list, I'll have to check out their music soon.
@@mollyesanborn Great :) will you film a reaction?
@@metalizard27 I'll definitely consider it :)
I think milk lizard was the first Dillinger song I ever heard. It's more tame than their usual work, but I think it serves as a decent introduction to them whereas songs like 43% percent burnt or sunshine the werewolf would've just scared me off
Yeah I'd say overall Ire Works is definitely a more approachable album that Calculating Infinity or Miss Machine. There are certainly some lighter moments on it.
You would like hybrid theory by linkin park
I believe I've heard a few of the songs off of that record but I'll still have to consider doing some sort of review/reaction for it. I'd definitely love to dive further into Linkin Park's entire discography.
Ire Works is my least favourite Dillinger Escape Plan album overall, but that's not saying much because it's still an outstanding album full of classics like Milk Lizard, Black Bubblegum, Mouth of Ghosts, Horse Hunter etc. They have never released a bad album and I'm so glad I was able to see them during their final UK tour pre-retirement in 2017. It was my 6th time seeing them live and it was emotional for me for sure.
Yeah all three albums I've heard from them so far, and even their EP with Mike Patton have all been excellent. They sure know how to make a good album. And that's so cool you got to see them live so many times, including during their final tour.
Highly recomend you music stuff by Devin Townsend
Thank you for the suggestion!
@@mollyesanborn Listen if want taste something between Leprous and Mr. Bungle
This album was heavily influenced by Mike Patton and for a lot of early fans of DEP was not well received, well at least by ppl I knew. Still a classic release when all is said and done.
This is a bit of a different sound compared to their earlier stuff, certainly less abrasive and industrial. They took things in a markedly more ambient and electronic direction. I can see why some people may not have been a fan, but I applaud them for trying something new.
Steven Wilson - Hand.Cannot.Erase.
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure it's on my list :)
@@mollyesanborn Cool :)
Who remembers that one time when Ben Weinman went dumpster diving for raw veggies with a hot finnish news reporter on tv. I hear he's happily married now. Here's hoping he decides to come out of retirement and play with Dillinger again.
Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop!
Thanks for the suggestion :)
RELATIONSHIP OF COMMAND BY AT THE DRIVE IN
It's not my favourite Mr. Bungle album...
I'm gonna have to say, they were horrible live when I saw them w/Mastodon on The Hunter tour. Brought out a bunch of un-mic'd amps to jump off, lots of swinging guitars round, felt like I was watching N'Sync. Super-tight, faultlessly so, but felt really weird watching them. Still enjoy the albums, just...
Great reaction. I may be in the minority but this album to me is their weakest (but still good nonetheless).
Their whole discography so far has been absolutely stellar, I'd say any of their albums could be someone's favorite or least favorite and I wouldn't question it haha!
Nobody should know about a milk lizard...
