"Puciato on his lyrics: Most people don't know that a lot of Dillinger lyrics deal with intimacy disorder, and the frustration that comes from not being able to get close to people or to resolve a broken relationship," he reveals. "Things like co-dependency and toxic relationships - and the cumulative long-term effects they have on you - have always been a recurring theme. The Black Queen kinda deals with the opposite of that - the glimpses you have that might not be your fate, and celebrating the times you felt connected with people. A lot of it comes from hopefulness that I have for intimacy."
DEP have plenty of rhythmic moments - you've heard widower, they also have one of us is the killer, mouth of ghosts, gold teeth on a bum, crossburner, i could go on. but what's always great about Dillinger is that they can swap between melody and hair trigger slam fills, but they can also use their frantic and aggressive sound to maximize the catharsis of a melody, like they do on songs like understanding decay and room full of eyes. anyway, glad you liked this one, ironically given your comment about wanting a longer song, it happens to be one of the longer tracks on ire works.
if you do a full album i definitely recommend Dissociation, I think you'd find that one most interesting.
I need to hear more of these tracks that swap over to melodic ideas. I'll keep Dissociation in mind for the future.
Good choice, although the album i'd most recommend for a full listening is "Option Paralysis" without any doubt. It's their greatest creation, they put up a lot of groovy things into OP, which even themselves couldn't repeat in any other album. The perfect mix between Violence + Tech + Expression + Intimacy + Good Taste at the top.
I appreciate the additional context about the lyrics, especially how the themes are split between Greg's various projects. I've never looked at TBQ and TDEP lyrics through that lens, but I will keep it in mind during subsequent listens!
If there was one Dillinger album to listen to fully, it's this one. This album blows my mind and breaks my heart everytime I listen to it.
This and Miss Machine are, for me, prime DEP at their best.
So many people disagree, but imo Ire Works is one of, if not their best work. I love every album, but this is certainly the one I listen fully through the most
That's the Gil Sharone influence. This was his only album with the band. He acted briefly as the band's drummer between Chris Pennie and Billy Rymer and includes reggae and rocksteady in his background before joining DEP.

Ire Works is mindblowing, but it doesn't overstay it's welcome. I'd put it up there with Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine in their discography.
Haha! I remember the first time I listened to Horse Hunter, I thought it was too short, as well. I love me a bit of Dillinger. Gil Sharone was the drummer on this album, such a unique drummer, with roots in reggae, if I remember correctly.
Mouth of Ghosts, the last song on the album, is a piano piece and it is such a beautiful piece.
There are few other artists (Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, The Go-Team, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Tool, The Beatles...okay, a few) that've forced me to re-evaluate what I thought I knew about music, yet none that've challenged me like DEP.
I pulled the same initial-face reaction that most do on hearing the likes of Fix Your Face, Baby's First Coffin, or The Mullet Burden, yet found instant replayability with the likes of Nothing's Funny, Milk Lizard, Black Bubblegum, and Phone Home, being a general fan of intensity or aggression, in music.
I began to appreciate the vocal-ranges more, the time-signatures, the micro-phrasing, the aggressive picking, and started to listen more closely to some of the tracks that I'd initially dismissed as 'crazy', and before too long I was boring Spotify with predictable re-listens to We Are the Storm, Wanting Not so Much to as To, and Farewell Mona Lisa, taking particular interest in memorising the passages of play, and ryhthm switch-ups.
Then the thought occurred - what if all those other tracks that I'd frowned to on first listens, were also puzzles that I'd love resolving if given a decent chance.
Panasonic Youth, Lurch, and Prancer, suddenly found their way into my xc playlists, as did Sick on Sunday, Sunshine the Werewolf, and When I Lost My Bet.
And on and on it went, with every month or so revealing a new-found appreciation for another track.
I'm still unravelling my love for this band, and will be for some time yet.
For anyone who likes intensity, dynamism, punk, metal, or jazz, I'd highly recommend listening to these guys. Just be careful where you start. There be Wolverines here among the tracks.

Brent Hinds is one of two guitarists and one of three singers in Mastodon (altering on leads though the bassist Troy Sanders is the main lead singer - I think...). The final section here is VERY Mastodon:y. But I guess they could have just composed a part where they felt "hey, this should fit with Brent on vocals". Or, they could have written the part with him in mind (if he didn't take part in the composing duties)

I'm sure we've had some of the other less abrasive tracks on here too, but I guess it's hard to remember when the other side of the coin is so memorably jarring lol

Ha ha ha, so funny hearing your pain at the song ending. It felt perfect to me, but you clearly weren't ready for it and wanted more, which is surprising given your ordinary feelings toward the band (as far as I can remember). Perhaps you should have listened to the next song also ? :)
I really liked this. Haven't heard much DEP, but definitely have listened to a fair amount of Mastodon.
Nice song, while I often struggle with them but respect them....I think Brent's influence (from Mastodon) is huge here, especially the second half of the song, way more melodic than usually D.E.P. of the few I know them....That said they're strong composers !
This is the only album with Gil Sharone who is an excellent drummer who brings a lot of his groovy style to their crazy writing.
All us Dillinger fans can’t wait for you to discover their groovy stuff.

If you want a very different DEP song, you should listen to Dissociation (last track of their last album) it’s a heartbreaking goodbye song
Oh damn features you wouldn't expect. Mewithoutyou - In a Sweater Poorly Knit ft. Timbre (A amazing harp musician)
This is a pretty good example of DEP's "chaos into groove" style that I kinda wished they'd used more than they tended to. I tend to weary of their relentless, angularly rhythmic assault, but when they go from that element into the groovy, even poppy element, it gives my ear a rest and actually gives the harsh elements more of a punch. I'm sure Brent had some influence on the groovy section of this track as it does sound very Mastodon-y, but DEP does have other tracks like this.
EDIT: I wouldn't call Mastodon an atmospheric band! The closest they've come to that is their last album and EP (Hushed and Grim & Cold Dark Place, respectively). Before that Mastodon were kinda sludgy/stonery metal that developed some prog tendencies and then some alternative rock tendency. They've definitely had a lot of stylistic evolution in their career. I think you did two tracks from them on Old & New Week that gave a good idea of that change.
I might be thinking of the wrong band then. Though I was thinking of something close to "stonery metal", which I view the longer held out notes of that style as an atmospheric one.
I LOVE this album...maybe my faveourite....maybe this, one of us is the killer and miss machine. They're all great, but I think Ire Works has a nice balance of chaos, groove and beauty
Yeah you gotta do a full Dillinger album next time so you can get a more complete picture of what they're about. My main recommendations would be Ire Works, Options Paralysis, or One Of Us Is The Killer. All of them have loads of groovy and melodic stuff mixed in with the chaos. Dissociation is really cool to but for me personally it hasn't sunk it's teeth in quite as much as those 3. Early Dillinger (let's say Miss Machine and prior) usually puts a lot more emphasis on the chaos, like 43% Burnt. But "Unretrofied" from Miss Machine (first album with Greg on vocals) is a good earlier example of Dillinger's poppier side. The guitarist originally was going to use it for a different project until he decided he could use it to broaden the range of Dillinger's sound.
I commented on another video of yours that I think you'd been lead a bit astray with DEP given your relationship with their music and that they actually have albums with groove. Ire Works and the prev album Miss Machine are the best examples of this without losing a lot of their early catalogue energy and chaos. "Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants" and "Panasonic Youth" off MM are exemplary tracks

i really liked this song. i stopped listening to DEP after that awesome Mike Patton EP... i moved on to different music genres by the time Miss Machine came out.
