Fun fact: Richard Patrick(vocals) is the brother of actor Robert Patrick who played the liquid-metal robot cop in Terminator 2.
He was also the football coach in "The Faculty"
makes sense that this band was born from hollywood nepotism. i dont see anyone organically hearing this and thinking they should be successful
Fun fact, Ms Blue is about D’Arcy (Smashing Pumpkins) and Richard Patrick’s relationship.
I read that Ms Blue is dedicated to his mother...
Didn't D'Arcy become a full-blown junkie? She got in legal troubles and she wasn't invited back to the Smashing Pumpkins...
Captain Bligh was written about Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Richard worked as the touring guitarist from 1989-1993. When Richard asked for more money Trent supposedly told him to "Get off his ass and go make a record" and further suggested for Richard to go be a Pizza Delivery guy if he wanted more money. Understanding Trent was in a rather bad place in those years as he was fighting with TVT Records over the right to Pretty Hate Machine and had a drinking problem. Trent and Richard have patched things up in the past few years though and they even played the rock and roll hall of fame induction ceremony together for NIN. Trent even asked him of they could play a cover of Hey Man, Nice Shot and had Richard sing the second verse of Head Like A Hole. Needless to say I'm glad they are not at odds anymore.
That's wild, I had no idea! No wonder I can hear a similarity between Filter and Nine Inch Nails at times, makes sense knowing he played for NIN early on.
My favorite Filter album. I never get bored with this one. 😊
It's got a little something for everyone, so much variety on this album.
Between Short Bus and Title of Record Filter was released a couple really good songs for the movie soundtracks. They working with The Crystal Method for the song "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" from Spawn soundtrack and this song is goddamn banger (actually, the whole soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, this was a great fusion of rock/metal bands collaborating with electronic musicians, highly recommended). This song definitely influenced the sound of Title of Record, making it cleaner and more eclectic, as opposed to the dirty and grittier sound of Short Bus. Also there was song from The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack called "Jurassitol" that sounds more like Short Bus stuff, but the song is great too.
Yes. Those 2 soundtrack songs are great!
That's very good to know, thanks so much for the heads up! I'll definitely have to check those songs out as well. In fact the whole Spawn soundtrack I'd love to hear, electronic and rock/metal fusion sounds like something I would absolutely love.
Yeah those 2 songs are bonus tracks on my cd and both great, trip like I do is especially worth the listen.
@@mollyesanborni second that, the movie sucked but it left behind an amazing soundtrack
@@kelvinmartinez4770so many of those types of soundtracks out there that are better than the movie itself
Filter's first 3 albums are really great. Especially Short Bus and Title of Record. I still remember being in college when Short Bus dropped. Man, what a time to be young and angsty. Lol.
I know The Amalgamut isnt liked by all, but i really enjoy it, and i think its definitely worth checking out. I saw them in Charlotte (or maybe Raleigh) at a festival, and i didnt want to see anyone but them...and of course they were the last band to play. Lol.
Yeah, I'll definitely have to give more of their discography a listen and see how they change up their sound from their early music compared to now.
This is their best album IMO; it took me by surprise when I first listened to it.
"Take a Picture" was a huge hit back in the day as it was versatile enough to be played on almost every radio station. I remember it getting played daily on alternative rock stations, hard rock stations, pop stations, etc. Bizarrely enough, it even made it to #1 on Billboard's "Hot Dance Music/Club Play" chart.
This album was a mainstay in my CD player my 2nd year of college. I know some people aren't crazy about Filter but they write some of the best choruses in rock music IMO. "Cancer" is hands down my favorite. (also, let this be my continual push to request that you wrap your Hum journey with their two final 2 albums!)
Cancer has become my favorite from this record as well, absolutely fantastic track! And I will absolutely keep more Hum in mind for the channel, I'd love to give Downward Is Heavenward a listen really soon :)
Hell yeah - cancer is one of my favorites also - epic
Nice! I keep coming back to this album, it's like a greatest hits album all by itself!
This one is pretty great! So many amazing tracks on it, and lots of variety with the sound as well.
Love this album. My favorite Filter album. Thanks for reacting to it. Their first three albums are great. I’d say check out their third album The Amalgamut next. Their last album, The Algorithm, from last year is a solid album too.
Yeah I loved hearing Title Of record, there's so much variety with its sound. I'll have to check out The Amalgamut at some point as well, I'd be curious to hear it.
Filter is so underappreciated... the talent of Richard Patrick, who was in Nine Inch Nails in their early days on guitar, is undeniable (Patrick is the band essentially)... The industrial rock genre has flourished w/ NIN, Rammstein, Static-X, etc. However, Filter seems to have given the obscurity card of late...
Their 3rd album 'The Amalgamut' (2002) was under-promoted and was such a good record... I still listen to the single "Where do we go from here"... Patrick has kept Filter active between his studio work as a film soundtrack composer.
'The Sun comes out tonight' (2013) was also a standout record... Filter's latest album is 'The Algorithm' in 2023.
I have never heard a full Filter album but I think I will now. Thanks
Oh that's awesome! I hope you enjoy discovering their music, definitely take a listen to their first album Short Bus as well.
It's gonna sound weird, but I so miss the angst of the 90s. I just miss it. Everything was permeated by this droning, contorting, vibrating sense of dread. I was a kid back then, but we all felt it. Radiohead's Paranoid Android album simply gave that feeling a name--effecrtively elevating it to the status of a symptom. But now that we live this vacuous, empty, disillusioned reality of the age of AI, I miss the exhiliration and the dread of the great music of the late 20th century. In a way, the fear of the fall was what drove us closer and closer to the edge. And now that we've collectively flung ourselves over the precipice, all that giddiness and the anticipatory grinding of teeth, and the biting of the nails, all that is gone now. What is left is just the android--in your pocket or in your hand, gathering data so it can suggest to you yet another great video to fuel your sense of nostalgia so you can buy yet another product for you to feel at home in this death valley of the human spirit.
Patrick learned quite a bit from his time with Reznor. This is by far my favorite filter album. Soo many high school memories with this
Yeah there is definitely a tonal similarity between Filter and Nine Inch Nails, makes sense knowing now that Richard Patrick was a guitarist for NIN early on. Both are amazing industrial bands!
fun fact: Richard was in Nine Inch Nails for a bit
I love Filter, completely under-rated band. Richard Patrick releases such under-rated albums that go under the radar. Always evolving too. By the way - you should listen to Fantastic Planet by Failure.
Filter is such a great band, these first two releases from them have been amazing. And I've got Fantastic Planet on my list of albums to check out, I'm looking forward to hearing it!
As much as I liked Short Bus, this album was my favorite (and probably still is) from Filter. It was first album that Richard released with an actual band, including Geno Lenardo, who would go on to form Device with Draid Draiman. While this album is very much a stylistic departure from Short Bus, it also keeps flourishes and some of the overall pacing from Short Bus within the record. Songs like Welcome to the Fold, I Will Lead You, and Skinny brought more of an alt rock/metal style to it, but The Best Things, Ms. Blue, and Cancer are definitely in the vein of their debut. And of course, Take A Picture was in a class all by itself.
BTW, I always get a kick out of/laugh at your candid reactions. They're great! ❤
Thanks so much for checking the reaction out, glad you enjoyed it! I really love the heavy, more unpolished quality to Short Bus and I was quite surprised at the shift with their sound on Title Of Record but it works just as well. Filter really did a great job fine tuning their sound and polishing it just enough to keep things fresh while still retaining the elements that I loved from their first record.
Take a picture is one of the most beautiful songs ever made
Richard Patrick did the vocals for "The Damning Well" too. Shame they only released one song, he has a super cool vocal delivery.
I've never heard of The Damning Well before, I'll have to check out their song. Thanks for letting me know!
One of the greatest albums ever! Richard Patrick is a genius
100%
A dream come true for me this month as I witnessed Filter Live at the Metro Theatre in Sydney Australia. Was a amazing show and the sound was electric. So glad you reviewed this album as it’s a favourite of mine. Looking forward to the next Filter album review.
That's so awesome you got to see them live! I'd love to if I ever get the chance.
Always loved this album and the electronica influences.
You ever notice with a lot music (especially if you listen to a lot of different music and artists/bands/genres) you can kinda predict how it's likely to go? Especially if you've heard other tracks by the same artist/band? When I first listened to this album years ago, all those unexpected changes were a breathe of fresh air. I couldn't predict how it was going to go, and I love when that happens.
The best things, indeed.
I absolutely agree, this album packs so much variety into its runtime. It started off with so much punchiness that when those gentler acoustic moments came I was not expecting them at all. Like you said, it's very refreshing when bands can always keep you guessing what they're going to bring next, and Filter definitely succeeded with that aspect on Title Of Record.
To me when this record came out, marked the end of 90’s sound. It holds a special place in my soul for personal reasons
Cool to see you liked "cancer" - always loved that song, seems so epic
I've loved Filter ever since I heard "Hey Man Nice Shot" in an X-Files episode (D.P.O./Lightning Boy) back in the day. Under-rated band, with real Nine Inch Nails vibes (for obvious reasons). Another really great choice, Molly, and an excellent review! I'm going to have to backtrack and catch your review of Filter's first album.
Also in case you didnt already know lead signer Richard Patrick's brother Robert Patrick is an actor. If you've ever seen Terminator 2:Judgement Day you may remember him as the "T-1000, he was also in the 1999 sci-fi/horror movie "The Faculty (he played the football coach) , the 1993 alien abduction movie "Fire in the Sky:and as Agaent John Dogget in seasons 8 and 9 of "The X-Files'
That's cool, thanks for the fun fact!
They even played a Filter song on the Xfiles.
@@countquackula8539 2 actually. There was one featured on the X-Files T.V show soundtrack ("Thanks Bro"), and another featured on the X-Files:Fight The Future movie sound track ("One" a cover of a Three Dog Night song)
@tonyschannel7438 Oh, that's right I forgot about the movie.
Glad you got to this album! And even made the connection to Nine Inch Nails! So much energy and "extra work" went into these songs, you can tell they just wanted to put their best out there, something very memorable and it worked. Album 3 from Filter: The Amalgamut is on the same level, with maybe a more polished tone, it's probably my favorite of theirs but i go back to Title Of Record every few years and just blast it in my car because it puts out such a fun and unique energy. Just a hint of goofiness.
Yeah this album is great! I'm glad I finally returned to Filter and gave it a listen. I love Short Bus too, they definitely put a bit more of an electronic polish on this one and I really enjoy both sides to their sound. I'll have to check out The Amalgamut at some point as well.
Monster of an album! Albeit not as consistent, I thoroughly recommend their next one too, The Amalgamut. Some BIG tunes. Yeehar!!!
Molly! you should react to some old school industrial albums, they are so abrassive like Early Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten or Throbbing Gristle :)
Great suggestions! I will have to keep all of those in mind, I'm loving the industrial at the moment :)
I really like Filter’s second album Title of Record from beginning to end!! My favorite track from this album is “The Best Things,” for the atmospheric sounds, awesome guitar riffs, channeling drums, and Richard Patrick’s streamline, clean and clear vocals. I definitely recommend listening to and reviewing their next album, The Amalgamut Molly!! That album is a lot of great depth and still my favorite of Filter’s overall😊
Amazing album
Yes, I agree! So glad I finally got around to hearing Title Of Record.
Richard really elevated his vocals on this release 👍
Agreed, his voice is amazing on this record!
How the end of its gonna kill me is like drowning further away from the surface and sound transitions into take a picture is genius. captain bligh is probably my favoritte song from them, especially the final part. Like an emotional sorrowful acceptence of a lost beleif abd love 90s shadow fox saria Zelda lydia lady.
When you say there's another vocalist on the song "Cancer", that's D'arcy, the bass player of Smashing Pumpkins. Richard was dating her and they broke up around the time Filter recorded this album. The song "I'm not the only one" is clearly dedicated to her.
Thanks for letting me know! I had no idea that was her.
FINALLY. I told you then and I'm saying it now. GREAT ALBUM.
Absolutely! This album is great, I'm so glad I've finally given it a listen.
This album is highly underrated especially after their hit "Take a picture". It is a really great album that I feel more people need to talk about. I also wished Jurassitol was on this album instead of the Crow City of Angles soundtrack.
It is a really fantastic album, Filter did a great job of fusing together a ton of variety with this record. Each song brings something unique. I'll have to give Jurassitol a listen as well.
@@mollyesanborn Agreed, Richard Patrick is amazing!
Filter has always been an all time favorite of mine and I'm really digging your other reaction videos as well! You should check out Orgy's "Candyass" if you haven't, it's a solid album! They're in the vein of a lot of other bands you've reacted to and they're also currently touring the "candyass" album for its 25th anniversary!
Thanks for checking the reaction out, I'm glad you've been enjoying the channel. I have Orgy on my list of bands to get to in the future, I'd love to give them a listen soon!
Awesome! Looking forward to it! 🤙
Definitely review "The Amalgamut" next! It's my favorite from Filter!
Noted, I look forward to hearing it!
Filters best album IMO, I got to see them live a few weeks ago and meet Richard Patrick. They still kick butt live.
Molly, check out Aussie metal artist Kim Dracula - A Gradual Decline in Morale, amazing album, I’ve not heard anything like it, it’ll blow your socks off
Yeah this record is great, Filter incorporated so many elements on here and it works amazingly. Lots of variety! I'd love to see them live if I ever get the chance. And I've actually already heard that album you suggested, I checked it out last year when it was released. It is very wild, such a fun listen! I didn't know what to expect on each track.
Thanks for another great reaction Molly. Hope you get round to Swans soon. Their whole discography is amazing. I think you would enjoy the post-metal genre a lot too. Start with Neurosis and then follow with Isis. I was fortunate enough to see Godflesh and Neurosis on the same bill. One of my all-time favourite gigs.
Great suggestions, thanks! I'm really curious to give Swans a go, especially after so many were suggesting them in the comments on my Godflesh video. I've got Neurosis and Isis on my list as well :)
Yay! Numetal genre? Almost got into this band. Forgot about Take a Picture. Diving in I hear a lot of Jane’s Addiction. Plus an outdoor summer festival concert vibe all over them. Super fun!
Speaking of Jane's Addiction, yeah Molly, if you haven't alredy, you need to check out Jane's Addiction's albums "Nothing's Shocking" and "Ritual De Lo Habitual"!
I'll definitely have to keep Jane's Addiction in mind for a future reaction :)
I love you Molly!!! ☺️🫰
Great follow up to short bus. Good selection- their whole catalog is solid
Yeah both Short Bus and Title Of Record have been great, I love their sound. I'll definitely have to continue with Filter's discography and see what else they've done.
@mollyesanborn the singer/guitarist was the original guitar player for NIN.
@@mikestelzer2027 oh cool! I guess that explains the slight similarity in tone to NIN that I was picking up on at times.
@@mollyesanbornI wasn't at all surprised you picked up on that. They have a song on the Spawn soundtrack you should check out sometime 🤘keep up the good work
*Ok. Some recommendations:*
🟢 *Power Metal* Pantera's first Album with Phil Anselmo. A lot of people don't know about this album. It's got that 80 glam rock style, right before they wrote "Cowboys From Hell". The track "we'll meet again" is probably one of the best guitar solo's Dimebag ever wrote" Check it out!!
🟢 We need more *Type O Negative* please.
🟢 *Fear Factory* If you're into industrial metal, especially their first 4 albums. They redefined industrial metal.
Until next time!!
Yes to all those recommendations!
GREAT suggestions! I'll definitely plan on doing all of these :)
Filter is one of the lesser-known gems of the 90s, who thankfully avoided the whole Numetal trend.
This was probably their best album. It was the most experimental album of a really experimental band.
Hidden tracks were a thing on a lot of CDs. I think it was Tool (but I'm not certain) had an album with 99 tracks, but tracks 13-98 were blank. Another thing that was done was what you discovered, where they just let the recorder run for an indeterminate length of time and then put in another track.
It would be interesting to know how many of these albums or tracks end up on your playlists and staylists.
I'm also extremely envious of you in that you are on this journey discovery of amazing music from an era of amazing music. The 80s through the early 2000s was simply an unbelievable era of music.
Yeah Filter is great, these first two albums have been so awesome to check out. I love their sound, very polished and yet there's still a strong industrial heaviness to it at the same time. I'm definitely looking forward to discovering more gems from this era of music! I'm loving what I've heard so far.
Molly, think I recommended them already but I'd love to see your reaction to Skinny Puppy; "Too Dark Park" in particular, is a masterpiece. I know you dig some NIN and GODFLESH who were both directly inspired by SP.
I'd love to hear some of Skinny Puppy's music, I'll have to plan on doing a reaction to them soon :)
Underrated album Underrated band
That hidden tack at the end always gave me a little jump scare because I'd forget about it, thinking the album was over.
Haha, yeah it's pretty unexpected! I thought the end of the album was going to be entirely dead air so when those weird vocals started it surprised me too.
Hey Molly. I'm happy to see you returning to Filter. Have you ever listened to "Skinny Puppy"? They are industrial. Hope you will also continue the journey with Ministry, and when you get the urge to go back to some "grunge" music, don't forget to check out Stone Temple Pilots.
Thanks for checking out the video! Filter is great, these first two albums from them have delivered some amazing songs. I'd love to hear more industrial bands, I know Skinny Puppy has been suggested before in the comments. I'll have to check them out soon, and would love to get to more Ministry as well. And Stone Temple Pilots is on my list too, great suggestions :)
Such an awesome album! It's funny you say it sounds like he's underwater about Take A Picture... You should watch the music video.
Hmm, you intrigue me... I'll have to give the video a watch.
Awesome video!!!!! I've been obsessed with this album lately
Yeah this album is pretty great, so glad I finally gave it a listen!
Filter and NIN from Cleveland Ohio
Two amazing industrial bands! 🔥
Great album. I got into the band through a free cd sampler on a magazine with their song Cancer, love that song! This was missing a couple tracks I've got on my cd, Jurassitol and Can't You Trip Like I Do which are definitely worth a listen, especially Trip Like I Do. Also these guys are fantastic sounding live. P.s. Bring on more Mastodon reactions! 😉
Yeah, Cancer is absolutely one of my favorites from this album! Such an amazing track, I love how brooding and almost menacing it sounds on the verses. I'll definitely have to give Jurassitol and Can't You Trip Like I Do a listen as well, thanks for the heads up!
Hi Molly, hope you are doing good. I haven’t heard of Filter. My best friend hasn’t either. Me and my best friend are going to watch your reaction and react to their songs.
Hope you enjoy your journey into Filter's music! :)
Dude...Filter is great. I suggest starting with Short Bus, and progress through their albums chronologically.
@@zmarko short bus is a gnarly record
Hey! Can you do Hail to the king next? Really wanna your thoughts on it
I'll certainly try and get to a Hail To The King reaction soon! :)
The band loves to use a lot of native percussion, bongo's , Orchestra strings ,electronic instruments and acoustic instruments into their music
I absolutely love the variety of percussion across this album, lots of different sounds they produced.
Need Army Of Anyone next!!! Love ya Molly!!!!!
I think she needs to listen to some Stone Temple Pilots before she listens to Army of Anyone.
Noted, I'll make sure that Army Of Anyone is on my list. Thanks for watching! :)
@@mollyesanborn Thank you!!! Love your videos!!!
Good stuff! 👍I love your Deftones vids and I hope you do more Static-X!
Thanks so much, I love that I got to discover Deftones through making these videos. I'll definitely keep more Static-X in mind :)
I adore this album. Thanks for reacting to it.
Yeah this record is great! I'm glad to have finally heard it.
@@mollyesanborn The Amalgamut is a fine album as well. You will enjoy it.
I've heard Take a Picture many, many times but had never listened to this full album. Very cool!
That's awesome, I hope you enjoy hearing Title Of Record! An amazing album, lots of great tracks on this one.
listen to army of anyone It's the meeting between Leo's brothers (STP) and Patrick. There's only one album, spectacular.
Cool pick.
Still hanging out for your Meantime by Helmet reaction.
Thanks for checking out the video. I'll try and get to Meantime soon! :)
At first I thought Molly had forgotten to take out the placeholder name from her video title. But no, of course, Title Of Record is the actual album title haha
Haha, yeah Filter sure was having fun with the title for this album :)
I'd definitely keep going. Some of the later releases have a different kind of musical direction. The latest one he released this or last year is back to the early heavy stuff.
Yeah I'd love to hear some of their more recent stuff too and see how they've progressed and changed their sound up as a band.
Gotta do Between the Buried and Me. Just pick an album. Or go in order. They are all fantastic.
I've started checking out some of their discography already and love what I've heard, and I got the chance to see them live on their Colors Experience tour recently and they were amazing!
If you're a fan of heavy metal, I highly recommend checking out Behemoth. They're a Polish blackened death metal band known for their grand and epic sound. They have an album called The Satanist that is a must-listen for any metalhead. Hope you have a great day!
Good to know, thank you for the recommendation! I'll make sure that I have Behemoth to my list :)
Go molly go
First comment! Heck yeah, thanks for watching :)
👍 Great job...I also liked track #2 quite a bit!
Thanks for watching! :)
If you continue on your Filter Journey you’re in for a Treat! Because the third Album the Amalgamut is tied with Title of Record for my favorite Filter Album. Even more diverse imo. Also for anyone not knowing, Richard Patrick formed another Band called: Army for Anyone, which unfortunately only released one Album called like the Band. I maybe love this Album more than any Filter Album, explore and enjoy!
Thanks for checking out the reaction! I'd love to give a listen to The Amalgamut at some point as well, and I'll have to remember to check out his other band Army For Anyone, thanks for the heads up :)
A very underrated album. I know the most famous song is "Take A Picture". But my personal favorite song is "Welcome To The Fold".
Welcome To The Fold is one of my favorites as well, such an energetic track!
@@mollyesanborn Also, fun fact. The lead singer Richard Patrick's brother is Robert Patrick. The actor that played the T-1000 in Terminator 2. It's also funny you mentioned Nine Inch Nails. I've seen you reacted Loveless by MBV, but there's also great shoegaze bands like Ride, Lush, Slowdive, Medicine, Palesaint, Catherine Wheel, etc. My favourite is Ride and ,Nowhere and Going Blank Again is their greatest albums. I'm sure you will be hooked up by a few seconds of their opening songs, I promise
Thank you for all of the shoegaze suggestions! I will have to keep these in mind for future videos :)
The 90’s were a great decade when it comes to music. We don’t do music that good anymore. It’s like somewhere in 2000, we forgot how to make music that will last forever.
The 90's were indeed an amazing decade for music, I've been absolutely loving my dive into the records from this time period.
