When I was in my early 20's I worked in a large machine shop with non stop noise and loud obnoxious machines. Most of the employees where jerks and it was a hard place to work. We were given an hour lunch break and almost everyone gathered in the break room and just continued the noise and chatter. I discovered that I could sneak off to the very quite warehouse, eat my lunch and then recline on pallets of card board boxes. I discovered that in 15-20 minutes of relaxing, clearing my mind I could recharge myself as much as if I was getting on a full nights sleep. I continue to do this 40 years later with the same results. I have always just called it a nap, but I now realize it is something more.
The people adding to the noise during their lunch were likely extroverts (meaning they recharge their batteries via stimulation - the opposite of introverts -- who recharge by limiting stimulation). I lived in a house of extroverts and until I knew about the Myers Briggs personality test, I never understood why I always needed to get away to a quiet place. I can’t speak for Hinduism, but in Buddhism, meditation is supposed to be a relaxed state of letting go where you abandon the process of thinking and doing. In fact the way he describes yoga nidra is exactly how meditation has been taught to me by various monks, and that the idea of using meditation to focus is completely wrong. The goal of meditation is not to focus on the breath. Focusing on the breath or a meditation object of choice is not required, it’s just a useful technique to help you relax if you find your mind is wandering/etc. Another common practice in meditation and very emphasized practice is to have body awareness. Buddha teaches to scan the body and to relax, rest, let go of thoughts and intentions, be in the moment, etc. I’m only commenting this because the pervasive conception of meditation as a concentration practice is the exact opposite of the purpose and essence of meditation
In Western Science (I am Aware that it is Not the Same as ancient teachings), there is two groups of Meditation: open monitoring Meditation (What you have Just described) and focused attention Meditation. Different results, different implications. (Sorry for my german autocorrect capitalizing everything).
@@BenceSzaszkó this is very interesting and I didn’t know that! Itd be cool if Huberman knew or clarified that cause I think ppl miss out by only going into meditation with thinking of it as focus attention, usually trying to improve performance. That’s so cool thanks for that clarification ❤️👍🏾
That is just one form of meditation. I think a meditation practice needs a combination of concentration as well as letting go. I will say I always found concentration practices to be boring/tedious so I have a bias towards letting go practices. Awakening/Realization can happen in many ways and there are many paths. I find it fascinating and sad at the same time how so many people live their whole lives in a subject/object split. Very sad to me that so many people do not realize their true nature that is right in front of their face. We are so wrapped up in our identities and thoughts, that we never stop, turn within and inquire.
the right gratitude and praying for others as you settle into bed does much to get your mind and body rested since self-centered thinking is often what makes for restlessness
well, maybe for some. ADHD is another cause of restlessness at bedtime. To manage, I pace gently inside my house while watching something educational (its not exciting, so I have to press in with my attention). As I pace, I pass the counter with my postits, so I can trap thoughts, organize plans etc. Then I usually can sleep with a relaxed body and mind after a short prayer.
I practice "Yoganidra" regularly using "Shavasan" (Corpse Pose) & deep breathing and due to my long practice, I can sometimes go beyond one hour. Quite often, after about 30 to 40 minutes, my pulse rate drops to 50 BPM ! It is truly refreshing. I am always fully awake, but my body goes into deep sleep. At the end, I come out of it slowly. One should be disciplined enough to really practice total lifelessness without moving any part of your body (except the lungs) even a millimeter. You should learn to resist the urges for small scratching or moving a limb, that you would feel initially. Once you overcome the urge for couple of minutes, it will go away automatically and then will not bother you again. Being truly in Shavasan and breathing deeply is the key. Thoughts in the mind will keep coming and going.
My grandpa would come in from what he was working on, drop down on the floor and take /10 min cat nap, pop up and continue...As a child I found it fascinating
@DroolRockworm my grandpa was a WWII vet and did hard manual labor. When he'd come.in from working he'd lay down on his back on the familyroom floor. Cover his eyes with his arm.and take a 10 or 15 min 'catnap'. I could never decide if he really went to sleep. He always said he was resting his eyes. Then he'd jump and do a couple things ie. lunch, toilet, and then go back outside to work.
I once went to a 10 day meditation retreat. I had to sleep in a room with bunkbeds and 11 strangers. It was a silent retreat, but still I couldn’t sleep, too weird, so I got about eight hours of sleep in 10 days! but I meditated for about four hours a day and I will tell you i left there so transformed and so energized (though I did release a lot of anger had a major healing) but, I never had to make up the loss of sleep. Meditation is amazing especially if you have trouble sleeping!
That sounds like a vipassana retreat. I did the same in the UK. Very odd experience sleeping in the same room with lots of strangers and not being able to speak to them for 10 days.
I've been doing this exact thing for 10 to 15min after work many times when I've had a busy day or lack of sleep the night before when I get home. Except I've just now have seen that this is "a thing" lol I found the real important part is to lay on the floor on your back, carpet preferably, cuz you need a firm surface to give your body support and set a timer and for that time to do nothing. No phone, calls, texting, talking, nothing. The goal I always had was to have my body and mind completely resting, no effort being put towards anything whatsoever for those 10-15min. And ya, I agree, it makes a HUGE difference in my energy level and my ability to feel refreshed enough to be useful for the rest of the evening. Some days work better than others but ya, HIGHLY recommend!

its why getting a massage, especially swedish massage can be REALLY relaxing and restorative. II was told that getting a one hour massage was like getting a good 7 hours of rest. As a massage therapist I am always honored when the client falls asleep on my table.
Massages are wonderful but expensive. I've had many massages over the years from Registered Massage Therapist as I hold my tension in my neck, shoulders and back. Had a bulging disk in my neck for 10 years. Healed itself but still mindful of how I sit, stand and the position of my head and shoulders. If I could sleep at night & remove the stressors in my life it would lessen that by 90 per cent. I had one $100 CAD massage from a young Asian lady and I felt the benefits for 4 days. I do this every day and have been doing it since I was a teenager. I’m now 47. An average my process consist of around five minutes to fall asleep and 5 to 10 minutes of actual sleep. Getting to sleep and going all the way to dreaming state. And when I hit dreaming state, my body jolts itself awake and I always feel like I’ve rested way longer than I have. I always feel completely refreshed as if I’ve slept for much longer.

We have created a society so separated from our natural state of existence that it needs a research lab to create a protocol for “Resting my eyes”. It is fascinating how the mechanism works but I think what’s most important here is that it works whether we understand it or not. If we could focus our efforts on creating purposeful communities designed around human well being the body will mostly regulate itself. A protocol is not a solution, it’s a treatment for a symptom of a larger illness. We need to focus on curing the disease. We’ve traded life for trinkets

Each session lasts 15 minutes, during which you are awake and aware of everything that is going on around you. NSR is available as a self study course for a nominal fee.
Yoga / stretching improves balance and flexibility. This is a good place to start before adding weight training. Move on to riding a bicycle which helps improve aerobic capacity and balance. As these improve add some form of weight / resistance training once or twice a week. The key is to improve balance, flexibility, cardio capacity, and strength in a gradual manner without any injury which will set you back and add frustration. Quality of life is key. You need balance, flexibility, cardio fitness and strength. Train to improve without injury. Reducing stress and getting quality sleep thru meditation and breathing exercises should be part of a daily health routine.
Accidentally discovered this trying to coup with getting up early for work. Instead of jumping out of bed, I spend 10 minutes meditating just on relaxing.
This guy overstates things all the time. “I came up with this thing” = I just took one thing out of something that existed for ages, and renamed it so that whenever someone discusses it, it ties back to me. “Anecdata” is another useless renaming of something. “Anecdotes” means exactly the same thing. This IS meditation. It’s a body scan with some breath focus. Stop differentiating things for no reason.

The most straightforward way to meditate is to *focus* your mind on one thing to the exclusion of everything else. For example: your breath, or a word, or a sound. As you are doing this, yes, you will become aware of your awareness.
@@kimjansson2338 I just googled how to meditate (even though I have done it plenty). Sometimes I think intelligence is just a form of OCD. A compulsion for order. Hyper focusing on order doesn't make disorder and chaos😢 go away. In fact an intelligent person sometimes just becomes a prisoner to their mind and in order to feel less isolated will share their mental anguish/burden with others.
Interesting how two brilliant scientists are approaching the thousand year deep study of our human nature and in doing so they feel almost embarrassed to speak out the true real benefits of such great teachings still considered by the academia a woo woo stuff.. Did you actually listen to this clip? (Not intending to be rude) He called it Yoga Nidra probably ten times throughout, and also said that the practice has existed for more than a thousand years in India.
People can discover the same thing concurrently. Everything breathing doesnt need to be attributed to India. Nor is there any evidence of them doing it first.
@@Americanheld There is no concurrence, Pal. You are realizing the benefits of breathing techniques & asanas now which were practiced by Indian yogis 5000 years ago. You are 5000 years behind in that. Rechristening yoga & claiming it to be your concurrent discovery just makes you look stupid!
Is it reasonable to assume that this practice could be helpful for those suffering with moderate forms of various mental illnesses such as Anxiety disorder, OCD, ADHD, and perhaps situational depression? As someone dealing with everything just mentioned, I get very bogged down by my obsessions and suffer from severe mental fatigue. Seems like it's safe to assume that NSDR would at least provide some relief? I actually mediated (in a way that seemed more like NSDR because I didn't focus on anything) once for about 15 minutes before a meeting and felt fantastic/rejuvenated for the next several hours. Meditation is simply a mental exercise. There are SO, SO many different types of meditation. It is not accurate to say that Meditation is all about focus. There are plenty of meditation techniques that are designed to relax/let go of focus.

Thank God for the real meditators in the comments, calling out the renaming and “demystifications” of these ancient practices. This video exhibits the worst thing about the Western mind… Taking practices that are supposed to bring the practitioner towards deeper existential reality and realization of truth and rebranding them as something to help you “be more productive“ while running around in an egoic illusion of yourself. It’s actually sickening. It’s like trying to analyze why the warm hug of a mother is good for an infant and then training a robotic puppet because it can hug more efficiently than a mother can. It’s all head and no heart
Yeah, it's better to say that it's adulterated and pathetic rather than a gateway to further understanding. I needed a session of whatever it is after reading some of the comments.
Give the guy a break and think for a minute that maybe mysticism doesn’t resonate with some people. Different strokes for different folks. Why don’t you just be happy with doing your thing and stop thinking your perception of the world is better than someone else’s.
The way I see it, this is actually a positive step towards the meeting of science and mysticism. Science is so rigidly objective. So if you see science considering things like this, even at just the surface level, this should be cause for celebration. See it as one little baby step of science. It will eventually take another step, and another.
This comment made me laugh, I like your analogy 🤣 The way I see it, NSDR has probably led a lot of people to yoga nidra who otherwise didn’t even know it existed. A starting point if you like. We’re at breaking point as a species and mediation is no longer considered weird or hippie like it was only ten years ago
When I was a child my mother would send us to bed early and require us to lay still and and not make noise until we fell asleep. because I often was not tired I did just lay there and really started to develop deep though and this habit continued into my later years and believe this is a key part of understanding yourself and connecting your conscious and subconscious mind.
I honestly was used to doing it without knowing that it was a thing. last year, whenever I woke up [even if I slept well] but I am kinda scared of starting some intellectual R&D work, out of sheer fear of the responsibility burden if was not able to solve some key problems in my game design projects, which is really scary do or die kinda deal for me at the time. Ironically, after solving what used to seem like an unsurmountable challenge, I stopped fearing, and stopped practicing my version of yoganidra. This lead to significantly decreased creative performance, and overall productivity. I used to call it over-resting that I performed after having top quality sleep out of fear to start the day out of stress and burden of responsibility that felt fate-determining then, and for legit reasons. I am definitely going to perform it again, and keep it for good. Top quality shit it was.
@@FromPoetryToRap He's always yapping about his brain being crazy and going hard. I'd be interested to see what happens if he practices a form of meditation like this.
The highest and most advanced form of meditation, is conversely the most simple form of meditation. It’s very similar to this, except you don’t need to lie down and listen to a script. You take the thought ‘I am’ and let it direct you back to the place of effortless witnessing. It’s actually the opposite to the whole ‘focusing’ meditation techniques. You stop focusing and allow everything to be as it is, while you simply rest in awareness, as awareness. I’ve measured resting heart rate and HRV doing this (using Oura ring) and the Oura ring app measures it as if you have been sleeping. It’s the most restful place one can be in besides deep sleep, because it’s effortless.
Yoga nidra is out of this world. Especially the longer sessions. It much more thsb just rest but it works for that. Ive been hungover and only had a few hours sleep and yoga nidra saved my ass many times.

It’s called taking a nap. But this is more structured and organized. But we’ve known for centuries that a 30 minute quiet time can restore your energy for several hours.
Dont you think renaming something that is IDENTICAL to the original is just copying and claiming it as something new? If people see it as mystical thats their issue. That's not what your suppose to do. You need to not focus and let your brain's subconscious handle it. The NSDR means to put yourself in a state of not thinking. To feel and relax.

“Meditation” is a wide range of techniques and purposes and different schools have different philosophies.
Then westerners pick one out and sell it 😂

That is just one form of meditation. I think a meditation practice needs a combination of concentration as well as letting go. I will say I always found concentration practices to be boring/tedious so I have a bias towards letting go practices. Awakening/Realization can happen in many ways and there are many paths. I find it fascinating and sad at the same time how so many people live their whole lives in a subject/object split. Very sad to me that so many people do not realize their true nature that is right in front of their face. We are so wrapped up in our identities and thoughts, that we never stop, turn within and inquire.
the right gratitude and praying for others
as you settle into bed does much to get
your mind and body rested since
self-centered thinking is often
what makes for restlessness
Great insight. I will give it a go! ❤🙏
well, maybe for some.
I like this thought!
My grandpa would come in from what he was working on, drop down on the floor and take /10 min cat nap, pop up and continue...As a child I found it fascinating
lol what? Please explain more
@DroolRockworm my grandpa was a WWII vet and did hard manual labor.
Can you describe your meditation? Basically how is done?
That sounds like a vipassana retreat. I did the same in the UK. Very odd experience sleeping in the same room with lots of strangers and not being able to speak to them for 10 days.
8 hours of sleep in 10 days 😂 cool story bro🤦♂️
I've been doing this exact thing for 10 to 15min after work many times when I've had a busy day or lack of sleep the night before when I get home. Except I've just now have seen that this is "a thing" lol
I found the real important part is to lay on the floor on your back, carpet preferably, cuz you need a firm surface to give your body support and set a timer and for that time to do nothing.

I don't know the name of the technigue. Is Swedish deep tissue massage? I know naps or resting brain for 15 to 45 minutes helps this 74 year old.

He’s talking about doing yoga nidra
I have been doing a technique called Natural Stress Relief (NSR) for many years. In addition to reducing stress, I find myself more wide awake after a session.

No, there are many kinds of negotiation.
The most straightforward way to meditate is to *focus* your mind on one thing to the exclusion of everything else. For example: your breath, or a word, or a sound. As you are doing this, yes, you will become aware of your awareness.
@@eddiegrant58 I would call that concentration, meditation requires defocusing.

Thank God for the real meditators in the comments, calling out the renaming and “demystifications” of these ancient practices.

Ironically, after solving what used to seem like an unsurmountable challenge, I stopped fearing, and stopped practicing my version of yoganidra.

@user-js2sf9fy2b so being lazy is an eastern practice?
I was having this conversation with myself the other day.... I am not surprised at all.
Yoga nidra is out of this world. Especially the longer sessions. It much more thsb just rest but it works for that.
Ive been hungover and only had a few hours sleep and yoga nidra saved my ass many times.
Can you suggest a guided video link

It much more thsb?
@@trizgreen7682WWW.innersanctuaryCNY has guided yoga nidra
super interesting. How long have you had to do it to be good when hungover/slept like shit?
Meditation is a focusing exercise and NSDR is a mental and physical relaxation exercise.
I hate how we need to extract the 2min worth of information out of 20min video.
More tricks and hacks that totally work. I can't believe I slept 17 minutes but listened to this podcast and feel like i slept 9 hours.
Title is click bait but the amount of hate in these comments seems extreme…
It’s not. He is a disingenuous liar. I would never do business with a man who is sleeping around with multiple women and then lying to all of those women acting like they are the only one in his life. The authentic or don’t be in existence at all. Being a liar is just scum.
no its not. People are just tired of being lied to from all angles.
Still... is the mind... that speaks to the soul...
So, it turns out that if you lie down close your eyes and relax for a few minutes you will feel better. Did I really need a PhD to tell me that?
Is not that simple. Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s awesome
@@phoenixgirl11 I didnt knock it and what makes you think I havent tried it? Actually, my comment implies that I have tried it and do like it.
According to college busineses and "experts", yes!
It’s called taking a nap. But this is more structured and organized. But we’ve known for centuries that a 30 minute quiet time can restore your energy for several hours.
Thank you Dr. Huberman! Best health advisor on youtube
lying down and resting does make me feel better. the Uberman is a National Treasure and must be protected at all costs!
Totally agree with Prof Andrew and I myself have benefitted by it.
Cutting edge stuff, this! We call it a cat nap, but, I don't have degree.
Cutting edge reaearch, bro. 😅 I'm so tired of these bafoons.
I think you mean a short feline sleep cycle.
yoga nidra is amazing. i do not do it enough. ty for this.
Agree, it is amazing 🤍
Dont you think renaming something that is IDENTICAL to the original is just copying and claiming it as something new? If people see it as mystical thats their issue. Yoga Nidra is a science according to serious Yogis.
And although he mentions Yoga Nidra here he fails to mention it on his how to vids of NSDR and moreover claims the two are different.
@@VedicOutlook He fails to give credit to Yoga nidra in his other videos, interesting. Tries to differentiate the two in fact claiming nsdr is an umbrella term whereas yoga nidra is particular type of nsdr.
@@VedicOutlook yes i agree with your point that its not exclusive to ethnicity or culture but i still believe its a western repackaging much like ‘breathwork’ and pranayama. And many teachers including Swami Rama have taught yoga nidra without sankalpa. Are you saying that this is not yoga nidra? Please clarify. Notably on the app he describes the protocol no mention of Yoga Nidra.
I done napping for decades, 5-15 minutes, deeply relaxed, no time awareness, but will note to wake up in 10 minutes. And gone for 10 minutes, bing wake up feel like I slept for 2-4 hours and can easily go for another 4-6 hours. Whether taking a test, doing some physical and/or cognitive intensive activity such as snowboarding or working crisis MH ER cases. Always thought it would be interesting to see if I was hitting Theta or doing some other brain imaging.
Hinduism has written a lot about meditation. Buddhism copied it and just mentioned that soul doesnt exist. Yoga Nidra is atleast 5000 years old
This is really interesting. I have recently started using my watch to monitor my sleep with the intention of improving quality. I was doing this type of breathing last night and was surprised that my watch interpreted it as my being asleep when I checked it this morning. Unfortunately the practise never did put me to sleep even when it was part of a daily routine.
Anybody else feel like breath work for deeper rest triggers their sleep paralysis?
Actually had my first experience with this somewhat a few days ago. One of the strangest/scariest things of my life. Was doing a little breathing before I went to sleep help me relax
Depending on your diagnosis, any mindfulness exercise (including breathwork) can trigger an adverse effect, making things worse.
Sleep paralysis usually peaks for me during times of big change and stress. The paralysis itself tho isn’t a big problem. But when you desire not to be in that state it definitely becomes the problem.
Your voice is comforting.
just rehashing old eastern (Indian) medicine
Meditation. The answer is meditation... Enjoy the 15 minutes you almost lost!
Im a fan of both of them but in this conversation they have reduced sleep loss to one tiny aspect and misinterpreted the state and point of most meditation practices. It sucks how click bait-y this channel has gotten
Huberman is on a monologue and yet sounding genuine ❤. However, he should refrain advertising for his friends🙏
Back in the day we use to call this sort of thing…TAKING A NAP 😂 . Naps help, who knew? Everyone 😮
Fake gurus and charlatans have to make their bs sound important and scientific
AMEN ☝🏾
@@alterego157 Lmao at the ignorance.. "A nap" doesn't hold a candle to NSDR
