    Nicely releases right hand to shallow out the swing, ball forwards, and rotates through the shot, excellent stuff.

    There is a great old video of Bobby Jones giving a bunker lesson. He opens a club wide open and plays 3 or 4 traditional explosion shots to 3 feet. Then he moves over and says, if there is no wall you could just decide to take the same chip you would from the fairway, and he chips 3 or 4 real close. I had never seen anyone teach it and it has turned around my bunker play. Never thinking about hitting behind the ball is freeing.

    This is a much more simpler way to hit bunker shots I a, a scratch player never had much trouble out of bunkers however this method is so easy I just step up and hit a "spinner" chip shot similar to how I would hit a chip that is twenty yard off of the green! Great video I still "flop" sand when I am in a very deep (think 20 foot bunker face) do you agree the more traditional method would be appropriate for very deep faced bunkers? Say more than fifteen foot of face?

    works well when the sand is not very deep, what if one is in one of those deep white sand bunkers where the sand is about a foot deep? you know when you can dig your feet in 6 inches or so...

      Exactly... shallow sand play is very reliable, but the technique fails when the ball sits down a bit heavily. Then you must get a bit steeper, and then you use the sand itself to blast the ball out of the deeper lie. This technique is great for clean lies and on firm sand. On softer sand such as the stuff in Hawaii (ground coral I think), every lie is a controlled depth. The club slices through some sands easier then other types of sand. So knowing the type of sand, getting a sense of the firmness or density of the sand tells you to increase the angle of attack. This is just another way of saying something others speak of, with a different focal point is all. Some players focus on the weight being forward, other cut or stand open so their technique is altered for that set up and the side spin being generated. This technique is really just a starting point. The player must learn to read the lie, just like you do in the rough or on a heavy lie in the fairway. The lie dictates your choices of course. Sometimes that choice is contrary to what you would actually prefer. So remember, a shallow angle of attack controls a lot of portions of the shot. It brings the bounce into play, and that is ALWAYS a good thing. Those that have a steeper angle of attack play the ball more forward so they too can use the bounce. It is the bounce that is most important, not your technique per se. If you know how to utilize the bounce properly, then whatever angle you choose to go with, the bounce must be an aspect of the shot choice. On stepper angles ( comfortable for a lot of players) an open stance, left pressure weighting, and moving the ball forward produces reliable shots too, but that is more of a cut shot, with side spin (which can help or hurt depending on the green's undulation.) Having more than one technique is where your focus should be. Learn a shallow angle of attack first, because that is mimicking a normal iron shot. Then learn to steepen you angle of attack for more nuanced lies and differing flight and release characteristics. Gary Player is know for saying "strike the match", meaning the exact same thing. That is to shallow out the angle of attack, just like lighting a wooden matchstick. You less sand you go through, the more consistent your results... which is the whole premise of golf. If you can learn maintain consistency, your scores will improve. But remember, this is only the starting point. Different lies dictate your angle of attack. Knowing just how to adjust to that takes a bit of experience to fathom it all out. But it comes quickly once you understand the bounce is your best friend. A good cut can be an excellent tool to get close at times... but at other times, that side spin is your enemy. LOL

    Jim Hoffman ! Hey Jim that's exactly correct, thanks for the feedback. Regards the flop shot, yes sometimes when you want to hit that flop yes there are a few different ways to do it, you sound like you are doing the required practice and experimentation to become the best you can be. Respect. dm

    U.S. Amateurs don't practice bunker shots because most of us don't belong to a country club that has a sand trap to practice out of. Plain and simple.

      Most golf course have sand practice areas. Some are out on the course between fairways and stuff, so ask. A lot of better ranges have sand areas too. Some actually charge for their use though. $6 here in San Diego. But you can chip or pitch or putt or hit sandies to your heart's content. All day long too, if you have the stomach for it. It is really a standard pitching technique. It is just used in the sand too. This technique with differing wedges is how you dial in from 40,60, and 80 yards too. Just use a sand wedge for 40 yards, a gap wedge for 60 yards and a PW for 80 yards, and just don't power up the shot. Just drop onto the ball from a 3/4 position and this technique will give you a ton of close approaches when you get comfortable with it all.

  • @cooper1520
    @cooper1520 9 років тому

    Will this technique cause the ball to spin?

    • @eddiebro101
      @eddiebro101 7 років тому

      The cleaner you clip the ball, the more spin rate you can put on the ball. So if you need a lot, try to pick it clean, and the sand is not between the ball and the grooves. If you need release, take a slightly deeper path, and make sure sand does get between the face of the club and the ball by entering the sand about 1 1/2 inches in front of the ball. This gives you options, simply by controlling the depth of the swing arc. Using the bounce properly is the real key, whether you are shallow or steep You can be steep, just move the ball forward, open your stance slightly, and aim left about 10* for the side spin. Remember, the deeper the attack angle, the lest you can control the release. Also the distance becomes a bit flighty too the deeper you play. The shot is more aggressive then too. So any mishits are punished more. Choices... it is what the game is really all about. Making the rights choices, at the right times.

    The hinging backswing is good but the follow thru is contrary to what Phil Mickelson teaches in his hinge and hold method. i.e. clubhead should not pass the hands in follow thru.

    • @seanm3226
      @seanm3226 8 років тому

      If you're trying to get out of a bunker with a 9 foot lip, your clubhead better ABSOLUTELY pass the hands. And what I've gotten out of Phil Mickelson's short-game video is that he's an amazing player...but an awful teacher.
