Thank you audioholic for recommending two subwoofers to balance bass sound across the room. Before when I had one sub placed at the front, it was too punchy when listening at the front, too boomy at the back and null at the middle. I did try switching phase but no matter the value it sounded the same. But when I placed second sub in my room, I realised phase control for both subs now makes a difference. My room is approximately 10 foot squared and currently placed two subs at the front and back. What I do for phase is first set both sub to zero phase. Then I listen at the front, middle and back. If there is punchy bass at front and back, and null at the middle, set first sub phase from 0 to 180. Then have a listen again. All front, middle and back should now have balanced response. If bass already sound smooth across the room, try switching first sub phase to 180 and hear whether it creates punchy bass at front & back with null at middle. In that case switch back to 0 and leave it. If bass sound quite smooth and switching phase from 0 to 180 didn't make much difference, switch the second sub phase to 90, then go back to first sub and try listening at both phase 0 and 180. I hope this helps for anyone with dual subs and phase control. Note that I only did in my 10 foot squared room and unsure if same solution can work at rectangle or asymmetric room.
Took a while adjusting the gain knob on my subwoofer to get the gain (volume) at 0.0 db through my receiver but finally hit that sweet spot. You guys are great. Thank you for your expertise.
Yea please do a video on Phase especially dual subwoofer phase ,that would be great. I have two Klipsch R-115SW In opposing corners and the back sub is turned slight off to the right , so both subs were not firing directly at each other
You guys helped me out with this video. I have a 25+ year old dbx 15inch 250watt floor subwoofer, and just recently the amplifier that went with the sub finally had enough. So now my classic sub cant connect to my pioneer elite receiver because the sub has speaker wire instead of today's plug-ins. So I was able to find a subwoofer amplifier that helped but still after all connecting to amp and receiver, my sub was still popping in and out, until you show to connect the lfe on the amp to the sub ports to the receiver, all is golden now, the subwoofer is a classic and it still shakes and rattles the house
I set all speakers crossover to 80hz, LFE 120hz. What about subwoofer manual filter setting? 50-150hz... I set 80hz on it too. Others set to maximum 150hz (or more if subwoofer support) .Thank you!
Hi, Gene, I improved sound of my PSB 6i subwoofer a lot simply by putting a marble plate (15x17 inch) on top of the subwoofer. It improved the boominess a lot. My sub was tested by Sound&Vision to be a good sub to begin with. The improvement cab easily heard. I have no way to measure it. If you see this message, please try it and measure it in terms of FR and distortion. Thanks,
Great video! But how about floorstanding speakers, should I set them to small or leave them at large...an what crossover frequency should I use with floor standing speakers?
Great video, thank you. I have the B&W ASW608 sub I just purchased. I have a Denon 9.2 receiver. Do I connect both "line out" cables to the receiver, or just one? Sorry, new to being an audiophile. I have a B&W 9.1 setup going (2 atmos speakers included) (no amp, just receiver)
That drawing to your right there - looks like something my daughter drew! She drew and drew and drew and now she's studying at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
Thanks for all the good info. If the front and rear speakers lack strength in, say, the 160Hz-200Hz range, would it make sense to raise the cut off level?
Hi Gene, I am new to Audioholics, great videos, very informative, thanks for doing what you do. Setting up a new home theatre this fall. My room is 24X16X8. From everything I have read or viewed, 2 subs are better than 1, and 4 subs are better than 2. The more subs the easier it is to eq the room and eliminate dead zones. My theater front end will be the PSB Imagine T3 Towers and Imagine C3 Center Channel. All other speakers in the setup will be PSB speakers. When it comes to Subs I am looking to go with either two SVS Ultra PB 1600, or 4 PSB Sub-series 450. The theatre will be a split of 60 % music listening- 40 % Home theatre. All the reviews indicate the two SVS Subs would do a great job below 20HZ whereas the PSB Subs would lack in this area. Having 4 PSB Subs would provide a great presence, but would their be a noticeable difference in performance. All thing equal what would you recommend?
I have a Velodyne Sub with High Level Speaker In/Out. I have speaker cables going from amplifier to the sub's High Level Speaker In (banana plugs both ends) and using the sub's Speaker Outputs to connect to my speakers. Is there any advantage in doing a parallel connection from amp to sub and speakers? Cheers.
Good video! So in my case running a 2 channel through an amp and preamp probably don’t want to use the LFE rather use rca’s sub out to sub in on the sub correct?
I'm trying to run two powered subwoofers from one line out. The subs don't have line outs. Is my best option to use a Y cable and hook them up to the LFE in? Thanks for the video!
Help!!! Just watched the video and I am confused? I thought you were suppose to increase the subwoofer crossover to the max only on the setup? On my Yamaha I set the crossover to the max when I initialized the Ypao... after adjusting I then set the speakers to small ( B&W M-1) then adjusted the crossover on my Yamaha to 80 Hz AND my Sub also to 80 Hz.....do I need to keep my Sub at 150 Hz all the time? It sounds great now but not sure if I need to increase the Hz on my Sub to the max all the time going forward? Thanks for the recommendation from the experts on this...love the channel by the way and just subbed 👍😍
Great video, it seems like your talking more home theater then home HIFI. Just bought a 400 watt KLIPSCH, my Yamaha has one (subwoffer) out RCA jack. Im lost on the L/LFE is that for home theater or home HIFI? I received one RCA cable, and bought one single cable, which do I use?
I’m using a SVS sub in a music Hifi situation with a stereo receiver which doesn’t have ANY of the options you’ve mentioned for setup. How do I properly set it up with a stereo amp (AXR100)
Good info. One thing I have never ever found discussed anywhere is a more and more common situation where you deal with adding a dedicated sub to a multiple powered tower setup. I would love to hear your input to this situation. I came to realize that while the powered towers were great from a perceived loudness perspective they lacked the deep visceral grunt capability needed for a real punch in the gut perspective that a dedicated sub gives you. So, in my case after listening to many opinions, especially concerning multiple subs. I came to the conclusion that if you have quality powered towers and you want deep down grunt power you do not need multiple subs. What you need to add is a sub that can really dig deep. Set your AV system crossover for it's lower setting. In my case 50hz. This allows the dedicated sub to do its thing and allows the powered towers to do what they do best, that is mid and upper bass. The mid and upper bass frequencies are far more directional and give the same apparent affect as having multiple subs acoustically while the dedicated sub handles the deep bass grunt work whose frequencies are far far less directional. This is my opinion and observation on this more and more common consumer situation. I would love your opinion on this subject. As I said, a great many people buy powered towers thinking that they are an ultimate package only later to realize they are great but, they do not give you the deep powerful low level punch that many people really want. Especially when watching SciFi or action flicks.
This sounds like a good setup but there are a couple of concerns: 1. you will truncate the LFE signal to the sub if your processor doesn't have a separate LFE crossover setting, 2. You lose some of the benefits of multi-sub modal averaging since all of the bass sources are not covering the exact same frequency bandwidth. See: ua-cam.com/video/4GG3WoFo9Q8/v-deo.html
Thanks for the reply and attachment I appreciate it. My AV Receiver has LFE crossover settings. I set it at 50hz. I agree with the multi-sub modal comment but, I believe that this is minimized to an extent with the fact that I have 4 powered towers for mains and rears and they are all emanating the same frequencies above 50hz where most of the content is and, as freqs below 50hz are largely non directional I believe it a very close approximation of a multi sub setup.
Yes 4 powered towers will give you some of the benefit of modal averaging, but you do lose it some of it with the sub operating below 50Hz which may or may not be a problem. Non-directional does NOT mean modal properties are to be ignored. It's best if you pull some in-room measurements at your listening positions to see what's going on.
I have down loaded a few bass tone generators. And, I went to my local Shack and bought a db meter. I have 4 DefTech BP9040's powered towers 300 watts per tower to the built-in subs and an SC8000. I have adjusted to the powered towers and the sub to output an even sound level so that the sub is not over powering the towers and so that the towers sound pleasing to my ear at the various freqs that the tone generator is generating from 20hz to 120hz. Am I missing anything? Is this sufficient? Or is there something I am missing completely that you would recommend?
What you said makes a lot of sense the sub woofer is better at producing lower frequencies than the speakers and speakers at better at producing the mids and the high frequencies. Tbh I thought I knew best as I have been into cinema sound since the mid 90's and didn't want to deprive my speakers of the lower frequency. Its never sounded better. More powerful sound and damn the channel separation sounds better than ever too. Hats off. Thanks! P. S I have mordaunt short mezzo range and my woofer sounds even better too and just a really nice balance.
Trying to connect to a Polk subwoofer that is entirely wireless. The only cord that is connected to it is the power cord... no input or output jacks. My soundbar, ZVox AV155 does have pin plug output jack for it's intended subwoofer. Any ideas on how this could be make to work...??
Hey Gene, At time stamp 6:38, you were talking about EQ settings. Are you referring to AVR or the actually Subwoofer? Example I have a Denon, and it has options for MultiReference, Flat, etc...
PHASE QUESTION: I often hear people ask, "Should I have my subwoofer set at 0 Phase or 180 Phase." This is an important question and I understand the logic behind it. If it was simply a matter of a Phase switch on a subwoofer, the answer would be fine - there would be only two possible choices (0 or 180). However, it is not that simple. My A/V Receivers from Onkyo and Sony allow me to select 0 or 180. This means there are FOUR possible scenarios. Those scenarios are: AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 180 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 180 I fully understand that if you have your subwoofer in the front of the room, you should have both the A/V Receiver set at 0 and the Subwoofer set at 0. However, my confusion and question relates to when the subwoofer is in the back of the room. I know by subwoofer should be at 180 Phase. ... However, does this mean BOTH the A/V Receiver and the Subwoofer should be set at 180? Or does this mean only ONE of them should be set at 180? In other words, I'm asking if you want the Subwoofer set at 180, does that mean the A/V Receiver also needs to be set at 180? If not, does this mean placing both the A/V Receiver at 180 and the Subwoofer at 180 will create a form of 360 Phase? If you could explain this, I would appreciate it.
I just adjusted my RSL Speedwoofers controls with help from this video. Thank you!! P.S. I bought the Speedwoofer based off of your review, and it has been literally unbelievable. As musical as it is capable for home theater...
Hi audioholics, I would like to know if I can use Bose redline single cubes with the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX101 and should I connect them to the receiver.I also have the powered Acoustimass 9 sub unit.Any info would be greatly appreciated.
OK Old Fogey Dimwit here. My Denon AVR has single RCA labeled SUBWOOFER PRE OUT and my Velodyne SPL-R Series Sub has a two RCAs L&R labeled input with the right one labeled LFE. What is my particular configuration and do I turn the audio on/off switch to the off position? Thanks!
@garyroxene use the lfe input which bypasses the crossover in your Velodyne since your AVR already has one for the sub out. The auto on/off switch set to auto will turn the unit om when it detects audio signal.
Good day guy. Love your show. To comment on on what I found that works for setting up subwoofers (jbl sub 150, Tannoy ts8, Wharfdale whs10e, amp Yamaha rxa 1050): setting amp subwoofer gain to about minus halfway (-5 in rxa1050) and just around 60% power on subwoofer amp. Tried this with all subwoofers and it works extremely well. It also works for different amplifiers as well (tried on Marantz sr5007). What this setting does is use the signal only from the amp and uses the subwoofer amp to adjust volume. This opposes having a high gain in the amp and a medium gain in the subwoofer. To summarize, the lfe on amp is used only for the signal (not a highly amplified signal) and the subwoofer amp generates volume. The subwoofer is not amplifying an already (highly) amplified signal. Just to add that at minus halfway, sub doesn't necessarily cut off.
Do you know, on a Denon X4700H if you can automatically set it up so that music will play at a lower sub boost than movies (not adjust the volume manually whenever the change occurs)?
Also, consider your sub's frequency response relative to your other speakers. Some smaller subs only go down to the mid 30's hz, which may be on par with your stereo mains in a surround system. If the sub has similar bass extension to other speakers present, the Audioholic may want to consider running all 3, or just 2, or just 1 depending on how much bass energy their tastes desire and their acoustics support. Typically more subs are better as they give better seat to seat consistency, and obviously the solution is to upgrade the sub to have extension over the full bandwidth. But if they're all have similar extension, a well crafted floor standing speaker will have a pretty smooth crossover, and adding in a solo woofer to the party may go totally cool-aid man on your low end. :D OH YEAH!
I've heard you say set them all to small and set the crossovers to 80Hz a bunch of times, but what does setting them to small actually do? What is the receiver actually doing with the low frequencies and how does it tie in with LFE + Main? I understand LFE, but not sure what's actually happening when you change the speaker size setting. On an older Denon I had, it would automatically set the crossover and send all the low frequencies to the sub when they were set to small, but it didn't have crossover settings in the menu. With the ability to set the crossovers separately what does the size setting accomplish? Thanks for all the great informational videos!
The first thing to know is if the signal is coming from the receiver PRE-OUT and getting to the other end of an RCA cable. Then it's needed to know that a good source is put on the input on the only RCA input on the subwoofer back with the power light on on the subwoofer. But the power light I am hearing on my SONY SA-WM250 doesn't mean the signal driver amp is presenting the signal to the speaker.
hello, I would like to know how you can connect a subwoofer REL T9I. to a DENON PMA 110 amplifier, because there is no pre-out output, and is it possible at all, thanks and good luck
Nice, thanks for the hint on the subwoofer level, I used to set the gain level on the subwoofer to the 12 0 clock position and have audyssey run through to - I wasn't much concerned with the subwoofer level audyssey setted. After watching your video, I looked at the level - and it was -10 db, So I adjusted the gain on subwoofer and managed to get back to -3 db :) and woohoo, my bass levels are way much better now :) - thanks guys
What is your advice for a subwoofer purchaser who connects the sub to an integrated amp with a SW port, but no subwoofer crossover fintion in the int amp. You said that going into the sub via the LFE port would disable the sub's built-in crossover funtion. How then would I connect the sub to the int amp to enable the sub crossover to work? Someone please advise.
Can you guys tell me a little about a possible issue with Yamaha Receivers outputting low signals through subwoofer outputs? I've seen a lot of people (including me) who was not quite satisfied with sub volume/pressure when hooked up with Yammy Receivers. After some room placement and some level/trim management I can get a boost but still not so sure about it. I got a small room (15m2) and a Sunfire SDS-12 (300w/600w peak). Turns out to be an issue with Yamaha Receivers I think...
Probably that your mains and sub crossover is tied in over LFE. If you have your mains set to lets say 60Hz youll basically only hear under 60Hz from the sub which there isnt much in music for example so your sub would just thump and hum a bit honestly hurting the sound but it would be awesome for movies. Try setting the crossover for mains higher or enable double bass feature on your AVR.
Thanks for sharing your expertise with all of us. I have a subwoofer and I can hear a radio station going through it how do I cancel that is possible that is coming from receiver or subs some how pick up radio frequency on their own ? Please help me out
Hey Gene i was hoping you could help out with a bit of advice and I will list all equipment at the bottom for reference. Ive been running a 7.0 surround setup for about two years now and so far no major complaints. All speakers are run full range except for the center with is at 60hz hp. Ive done comparison tests with subs set at 80hz for all and full range without subs. I couldnt rell the difference. I would like to run my subs but im not a fan of the 80hz xover point for all speakers. If i ever change to a lower setting for subs and lcr i lose bass like the processor isnt sending it out to the speakers. Definitely not a cancellation issue. It just gets lost in the mix and never making it to the speakers. I would like to pull my subs out of storage and put them to good use and was wondering if you had any recommendations as to settings in the Marantz i could make to help with disappearing bass. Ive tried lfe+main with no difference. You may think im alittle nutty when you get to my center channel setup but it sounds phenomenal. Ive done car and pro audio setups over the years and i try to run active xovers whenever i can. Thank you ahead of time with any advice you may be able to impart will be greatly appreciated. If you need any other info please ask away. I have a SVS subwoofer, it has red (LFE) and white inputs, when I use a splitter the output of the sub gain 6db. Does the crossover from the receiver still works like that?
Hi folks! I´ve a reciever Denon Avr-s 940H and two subwoofers Kliptsch R-115SW. I have each one connected independently to the receiver. I´m wondering why on the reciever shows only one soobwoofer as if the other one does not exist. ? All the others speakers are showing correctly. Thank you.
I need hlp bad I'm looking for a way to get Dolby atmos I need to know if the ok onkyo txsn676 is a good av receiver or should I get the 686 I want a receiver with IMAX enhance if I can or should I just get a Dolby atmos soundbar if I use a as c receiver what kind if speakers do I need
I just got my Polk audio sub and plugged it into my demon receiver. I’m seeing the green light but not getting any sound or bass at all. I don’t see an option on the receiver to add a subwoofer. Any suggestions?
Wen I connect my marantz pm6007, to my klipsch r100sw, via subwoofer out and rca L/white LFE i cannot adjust crossover on the subwoofer what should I do?
Gene, I have Marantz 7702 Mk2 & just purchased a Sunfire HRS-12 sub. My new sub keeps going into standby mode after about 20 minutes of playing and the LFE signals are definitely being played in the content I’m watching. The sub will not turn back on until I unplug it and fire it back up. I've increased the sub level in my Marantz to boost the LFE signal to the sub and it continues to go into standby mode. I just got setup Friday night and plan to call Sunfire on Tuesday after Memorial Day for tech support. Any advise is truly appreciated.
Hey guys I have a small delimma. I purchased a polk audio CS1 series II center speaker when I first started putting together my home theater system. Not knowing about timber match at the time I then purchased a a pair of fluance signature series bookshelf speakers. I love my fluance speakers so Im keeping them. My question is would it be worth buying the fluance center speaker to match timber or stay with my polk audio center? My finances are fixed at a horrible low. I live alone and Im 62 years old. It would be very difficult to replace the center speaker at my income level but if it would make that much diference I would. I could try to sell my polk, it is in excellant condition. Please respond. Thank you very much. I love your videos, they are very informing.
JTR Captivator 4000 or PSA S7201? I have the green light from my wife for a one time splurge. Looking for the out of this world lows and low distortion primarily for home theatre but kids will use for music in the basement. Or should I look in a completely different direction of subs. Any brand recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
If I ran the calibration on my Pioneer Elite, and then switched the phase on my subwoofer from 0 to 180 because the 180 provided better bass, do I have the rerun the calibration? So that it can calibrate according to the 180 setting?
I wouldn't do that, instead just plug one sub into the receiver and the other into the sub you just plugged in...providing it has a line out on that sub. If not than, you have to use a "Y" cable, where you plug the single end into the receiver and then the two subs into each end of the other two RCA plugs on the "Y" cable.
Hello, I’m confused, I have 2 subwoofers that I set both of the crossover to the max which is 120hz- for my receiver do I put the crossover to 80hz or 120hz ?
Even with my dual subs positioned at diagonal corners and gain at 1/4 or 9:00 Audessy set the level at - 12db. I have no room treatment and would prefer to not add any as this is the main living room. Any other suggestions? Should I set the sub gain even lower?
It may be because they are in corners. The corners are amplifying it and the calibration is detecting that. If you do the sub crawl you'll find more suitable positions that give a cleaner sound.
Hi, what if the subwoofer has 2 LFE(L+R) inputs, do you use 1-to-2 RCA cable or just use 1-to-1 cable and plug it into either L or R terminal of the subwoofer LFE terminals? Thanks
I just set all my speaker levels to 0 on my Yamaha Amp, my subs set to 50%. Crossover on my receiver is 80hz and the subs crossover is set to maximum. works for me 🤷🏼♂️🤙🏻
Great video and you did touch on subs not turning on from auto mode.Well mine does not.I have an SVS SB 12 sub and a Yamaha receiver(673)and I cant get sub out of auto mode.I used YPAO to set up my theater putting the sub at half gain and the results set the sub at minus 0.5 which I felt was pretty accurate. So what can I do to get this sub out of off mode? Should I raise subwoofer trim level?
I have a Marantz sr6011 4 pro monitor 1000's surrounds, 2 DefTech 9060 towers with sub inside, DefTech cs9060 center with sub inside, 2 svs sb 1000's. I have my towers and center wired with speaker wire set to 80hz small, and volume on all 3 set to 1:00. My svs subs are connected with RCA cables, sub 1 and sub 2 are set at 2:00 on the volume and set to LFE on both and both 10db set in the receiver.. Is this set up correctly? The reason why I ask is, it seems to me that my towers and center are producing more bass than the svs subs. Any help appreciated. Thank You!
I'm having trouble with my neighbors all of sudden the music & some movies is too much bass I'm trying to make adjustments. Also is there a way to keep most of the sound to in the home to where I can still keep good volume it's in a mobile home park. I don't want my property manager called again. Any help would be great
Hi guys. I'm new to your channel and I'm learning a lot already. I bought a budget, beginner setup and the sub stopped working. I have a Sony STR510 AVR combined with Harmon Kardon HKTS15 surround speakers. I inherited a used Kenwood ks-303ht sub from my cousin who passed away. Plugged it in but it's not working either. Am I to just assume my AVR is toast or is there some troubleshooting I can do. I don't know if the kenwood sub was working before I got it.
I have a 17x12 room and my L/R are 15” cerwin vega full rang speakers my full speaker layout I’m trying to achieve is 5.2.4. Where should I place my powered subwooffers?
I have a passive sub setup in a sonotube with two JLw6 10's in it hooked up to a Butt Kicker BKA1000N. Both the filters are on, the crossover dial is set to 60Hz, Volume at 4 of 10, and the Onkyo pre-pre had its Audessey set the gain to -10.5dB. After watching the video, it seems the settings are off. Any suggestions ?
I have a Klipsch SPL-120 it has positive and negative analog inputs. My amplifier has only a single pre out analog female receiver. Should I only do a single analog cable to my subwoofer into the left channel only, or do a Y splitter that utilities positive and negative inputs on the sub and only the single sub pre out on the amp? Any recommendations on cable brand would be appreciated as well.
So I'm watching this video for the first time and I just bought 2 me subwoofers, my Denon has crossover settings and this confuses me cause I can't see the exact numbers on the sub there's just incremental lines. I have floor standing speakers that go down to 20hz so idk if it's overkill but I wanna try and get this right. Until now, I haven't really addressed this and I think things sounds good. Anyway, if u can dumb this down for me I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks for the info! I have a question. Should I follow the directions for subwoofer setup from the Sub instructions or the amp instructions? I have Fostex GX250s for fronts with Fostex CW250 subs. These are designed to be used together and include instructions for pairing (subwoofer crossover and level). However, my Yamaha CX-A5200 and MX-A5200 pre amp, amp cobo recommend a different setup for the YPAO. Is there a clear favorite or do I just need to experiment?
I would set the speakers with the speaker instructions. Run ypao and if the receiver maxes out the speakers settings to balance the sound adjust the speakers so the receiver doesn't max the settings.
Hi guys, I have a home theater in a box receiver, so it dose not have an LFE out of a RCA line out the subwoofer it came with is passive. And I just bough an active sub polk paw 10 ...So do I connect the left and right speaker wire to the powered sub high in put or can I just use the passive sub output of the receiver?
Hi guys! thank you for the video! Seeing you with a removed amp from a self-powered sub makes me think I should ask you this: I have an issue with receiving RF on my sub (I live in direct line of sight of my city's main antennae) and I've tried everything: balance XLR cable, pads, etc. I even disassembled one active speaker and built a little internal Faraday cage around the amp, which helped, but not enough. My next step is to totally remove the amp, as you have, and either put it in a metal box or just run the sub passively with an external, normal (i.e. in its own metal box) amplifier. Is this my only way out? or should I plaster the inside of my sub with tin foil? Any advice appreciated. (My sub is an Energy ES-18XL, which does not happen to have the convenient passive binding posts the one in your video has) Thank you!
Great video I don't have LFE. But all the way cranked up where you guys say 200 mine says bypass. awesome! A week of searching. This is the only video I can find that gave me that information .thank you I've been looking for that as I am upgrading all of my system. Everything replaced but my Paradigm sub. The system I am upgrading to is a 7.2. I will be running a second sub "also line in". with two subs I was told to run at 180. What about the second sub on the line with line in.where do you set that one?
Hi Gene, big fan love your work as always. I currently have 2 active ported 12" subs. I wanted to add 2 more. I was curious if I added 2 more subs that are sealed & same brand would give me both benefits of lows as well as punchiness.
Hi Gene. My home, when it was built 15 years ago, was pre-wired for 7.1. The builder used coax cable to handle the subwoofer which has coax-to-RCA converters at either end to make my connections. I purchased a 2nd subwoofer less than a year ago and had to use a Y connector to hit both subs. I now have recently purchased an Anthem AVR 60 which has two subwoofer outs but I am only using only one of them because of my current wiring. My question is, would it be worth the effort for me to re-wire, getting rid of the coax and replacing it with two subwoofer cables? Thanks!
Bob Inocencio Only if the Anthem's sub pre amp outputs are truly independent and capable of setting separate levels and distances. If not it's just an additional mono line out and the splitters are fine.
I was thinking about upgrading from 5.1 to 5.2, I currently am running a Polk 12' subwoofer. Should I have a smaller subwoofer on the other side or keep purchase another 12' subwoofer....
What if we select speaker to be large.........than what should be the low pass filter selection on back of tower speaker with active subwoofer Either it should be 200hz or 80hz or flat response .....?
I've never had Audyssey be able to get through a room setup with a sub attached to the system. Tried with three different subs- if the sub is on at all, it errors out on the setup. My favorite sub is an old Velodyne, so I lowered the volume on the sub to the point where it barely has output- but it still errors out on sub level. I ended up running the setup without the sub, then manually adding the sub in the setup. It ended up sounding ok in the end, but what a pain. Years of being around aircraft means I don't have a good enough ear to really set my stuff up manually- but I'm constantly having to change sub volume while in use. Thankfully, I separated my 2 channel music system from HT to simplify... I like brute force in music, but just can't get the HT to be clean, clear and accurate.
HELP PLZ!? I have a samsung mx-hs7000 stero and I want a svs subwoofer. I have to use high level inputs and svs dosen't have that option😥😥😥 what do I do?
Hi, Whilst I understand the principle and practice of the subwoofer crawl for positioning one subwoofer I'm not so sure how you would do that for two or more. Would you be so kind as to give us some guidance on that ?
So you'd crawl for the first position, place that sub, then crawl for the second position, then place the second sub? Or after the placement of the first sub, you'd crawl with the second sub in the secondary seating position?
I know this might be the wrong kinda video but it does have to do with base at low frequency optimization. I have an old pair of Pioneer Elite TZ-7s from the early 90s, is there a way to base manage the base of those speakers to optimize their base response to the best possible level? The specs rate the speakers to 20hz but I have never been able to test them to see how low they can really go though. I have them on a basic set up using an older STR-DB840 as a pre-amp and a Pioneer SX-V90 as the power amplifier.
I have a def tech supercube 4000 and an onkyo tx-nr708 receiver with audessey. The software asks me to turn the volume up on the sub to 75 db before starting the calibration. It's confusing which way to go about this. The max volume is 40 on the sub. When matching the 75db it reads at volume 3. But I've read starting at 50% this is a huge difference in volume when calibrating both times. Which is more correct way? Thanks
This is by far the most useful subwoofer setup video. The explanation is so thorough!
I'm big into car audio, so this was interesting to see how the home theater people do subs.
How do find a longer hdml calb
I've been needing this video for the last twenty years of my adult life.
Took a while adjusting the gain knob on my subwoofer to get the gain (volume) at 0.0 db through my receiver but finally hit that sweet spot. You guys are great. Thank you for your expertise.
I learn something every time I watch one of your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Yea please do a video on Phase especially dual subwoofer phase ,that would be great. I have two Klipsch R-115SW In opposing corners and the back sub is turned slight off to the right , so both subs were not firing directly at each other
Praying mantis Kung-fu yeah me too.. i also have 2 klipsch r-112sw subs..
I hope you've the phase set to opposite of each sub.. one a 180 the other to 0.
I look at you guys as teachers because you are teachers. I appreciate all the information and thank you for sharing.
Dammit, I love you guys! You guys are such a big help in me expanding my "audiophile" evolution. Thanks as always!
GO BLUE!
Thanks,
Great video guys. Is there an equivalent video but for the AVR side?
Great video! But how about floorstanding speakers, should I set them to small or leave them at large...an what crossover frequency should I use with floor standing speakers?
Great video, thank you. I have the B&W ASW608 sub I just purchased. I have a Denon 9.2
receiver. Do I connect both "line out" cables to the receiver, or just
one? Sorry, new to being an audiophile. I have a B&W 9.1 setup going
(2 atmos speakers included) (no amp, just receiver)
Do you need to use the left and right inputs? I’m using a y-splitter on my subs currently, is this a good or bad thing?
That drawing to your right there - looks like something my daughter drew! She drew and drew and drew and now she's studying at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
thanks...I realised I had not switched my subwoofer cross over to bypass....it made a big difference to the bass...thanks for the good information
Thanks for all the good info. If the front and rear speakers lack strength in, say, the 160Hz-200Hz range, would it make sense to raise the cut off level?
Hi Gene,
I am new to Audioholics, great videos, very informative, thanks for doing what you do.
You guys are amazing. Setting up the sub was so hard until i saw this. Great double act
Would have liked to see info on auto power on/off/sleep/sense modes for the sub.
Hey Gene,
At time stamp 6:38, you were talking about EQ settings.
Those scenarios are:
AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 0
AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 180
AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 0
AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 180
I fully understand that if you have your subwoofer in the front of the room, you should have both the A/V Receiver set at 0 and the Subwoofer set at 0.
I forgot I also have a Kenwood Stereo Control Amplifier, can I combine it with the rest of my equipment mentioned before?
Do you know, on a Denon X4700H if you can automatically set it up so that music will play at a lower sub boost than movies (not adjust the volume manually whenever the change occurs)?
please.do a video demonstrating multiple subwoofer calibration and phase control. I have 3 . could use your help
I have 4 subs playing all at once
I miss Marshall, always did good reviews.
hello, I would like to know how you can connect a subwoofer REL T9I. to a DENON PMA 110 amplifier, because there is no pre-out output, and is it possible at all, thanks and good luck
I just set my sub volume manually in the receiver and the sub itself. If you let the receiver set the level, it's way too low for some reason.
When I use LFE on my svs sb2000, it doesn't sound bassy as when I use a Y-connecter. Why could that be?
Please help me out
Hi sir Audioholic me I ask you, how can I connect of my old sony DVD player (no hdmi port) to my new yamaha rxv6a?
Thank you for your response ❤🙏
Use the component or composite video for video and toslink or coax for audio.
@@Audioholics Thank you so much sir ❤🙏
so when calibrating your speakers with an SPL meter, what dbs should you start off at??? on the AVR

What's better, using an spl meter to get all speakers to 75db or to run the AVR correction program?
I have a SVS subwoofer, it has red (LFE) and white inputs, when I use a splitter the output of the sub gain 6db. Does the crossover from the receiver still works like that?
Very informative guys it helps me a lot as a beginner audiophile 👌
Thank you.
I need hlp bad I'm looking for a way to get Dolby atmos I need to know if the ok onkyo txsn676 is a good av receiver or should I get the 686 I want a receiver with IMAX enhance if I can or should I just get a Dolby atmos soundbar if I use a as c receiver what kind if speakers do I need
have u heard of this new Film maker mode just announced by the Ultra HD Alliance this week
do a minidsp tutorial to do some subwoofer optimization in different scenarios....
I just got my Polk audio sub and plugged it into my demon receiver. I’m seeing the green light but not getting any sound or bass at all. I don’t see an option on the receiver to add a subwoofer. Any suggestions?
Wen I connect my marantz pm6007, to my klipsch r100sw, via subwoofer out and rca L/white LFE i cannot adjust crossover on the subwoofer what should I do?
could u please explain the buffered subwoofer output?
Hello, I was under the impression when you hook up via speaker level inputs for 5.1, you turn the sub-out off on the receiver and or dvd blu ray.
No, you have to have sub-out on and hook it to the sub-out.
If I ran the calibration on my Pioneer Elite, and then switched the phase on my subwoofer from 0 to 180 because the 180 provided better bass, do I have the rerun the calibration? So that it can calibrate according to the 180 setting?
Thank you all. Question can I connect 2 sub in to one sub out put of my avr reciever,?
I wouldn't do that, instead just plug one sub into the receiver and the other into the sub you just plugged in...providing it has a line out on that sub. If not than, you have to use a "Y" cable, where you plug the single end into the receiver and then the two subs into each end of the other two RCA plugs on the "Y" cable.
Learned a lot from this video thanks.
Thank You!
I was considering getting a Klipsch R-8SW use one of these in the rear pared with my Klipsch R-100SW in the front. Good idea?
I'm having trouble with my neighbors all of sudden the music & some movies is too much bass I'm trying to make adjustments. Also is there a way to keep most of the sound to in the home to where I can still keep good volume it's in a mobile home park. I don't want my property manager called again. Any help would be great
The level setting is the volume for the sub. You can lower it for less boom.
Can You Do a Video How to Set Up the Yamaha YSW 315 Subwoofer ..
I have two DEF tech powered towers. Is it OK to use another separate sub woofer. If so, should I do the sub woofer crawl the same way?
I wish you would have demonstrated a sub setup.
Yes talk and point to an image of a subwoofer back adds too many variables.
My TX-NR6100 has only a left and right pre-out and neither get anything from my subwoofer.
What if we select speaker to be large.........than what should be the low pass filter selection on back of tower speaker with active subwoofer
Either it should be 200hz or 80hz or flat response .....?
Do you recommend y splitter subwoofer cable? Does it cause too much a load on the receiver or subwoofer?
I would only split once. Daisy chain or get a buffered mdsp box to split a single sub out to 4 independent sub outs.
@@Audioholics So if there are 2 subwoofer outs, we can use a y splitter cable from the two outs to the 2 separate subwoofers?
Hi,
Whilst I understand the principle and practice of the subwoofer crawl for positioning one subwoofer I'm not so sure how you would do that for two or more.
Would you be so kind as to give us some guidance on that ?
Alex Young You can do it to find multiple locations to place one or more subs.
So you'd crawl for the first position, place that sub, then crawl for the second position, then place the second sub? Or after the placement of the first sub, you'd crawl with the second sub in the secondary seating position?
What about an older subwoofer like my JVC? I cannot get any sound although the receiver shows it's on.
Thanks
